Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

Poll: Should Shaq get a statue along with that retired jersey?

I don't mean to make Kareem Abdul Jabbar's head explode but this topic will certainly come up at some point. Should Shaquille O'Neal get a statue outside of Staples Center? He definitely deserves to have his #34 hanging up in the rafters at Staples but that's probably where it will end. In my opinion, not only to you have to be a Hall of Fame player to be immortalized in bronze outside of Staples but also you must also be a Laker for life. Magic Johnson and Jerry West played their entire careers with the Lakers. Chick Hearn, Laker for life.  Kareem played 14 years with the Lakers and he will be next to recieve that honor. After that Kobe will certainly get one too. That's the standard that has been established so far and there's nothing that leads me to believe Shaq will be the exception to that.

You've heard from me. Now lets hear from you.

He should get a statue.

Before Kareem’s.

Seriously, if Kobe gets his jersey hanging in Staples, I don’t see any reason why Shaq’s not.

Hoping that when Lakers entered years of rebuilding, Juventus would stop sucking.

Why so?

They both were important pieces to the Lakers’ 3-peat. Of course, Kobe’s retirement is still a long way to go, so to wait until Kobe retires and gets his jersey hung up THEN hang Shaq’s is stupid. But at least we know that Kobe’s jersey will definitely be retired. Since it’s a sure thing, then Shaq’s case should be a sure thing also.

Or did I word it wrongly?

The only time Shaq would get a statue before Kareem, let alone Kobe, is in backwards topsy turvy town.

Because that’s where they do things backwards… like giving a statue to Shaq before giving it to Kareem. Backwards turvy town.

I don't know.... you could make a case either way.

I’m leaning towards no statue. A significant part of his career was spent with other teams.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be committed against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the Limelight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

Wrong.

I voted for both… a 3-time NBA Finals MVP deserves to have a statute with any team. It isn’t like we are making a statute for John Salley here.

No statue, just jersey

I understand statues for certain players along with Chick Hearn, however I really don’t want to see a ton of statues in front of Staples Center when I go to see a game. I mean how many is too many?

that alley-hoop from kobe in game 7 vs the blazers would be a nice statue

to commemorate the 3peat…and/or as shaq says “the best big guy/little guy duo” of all time…

Great idea.

I think having both Kobe and Shaq’s statutes be that play would be perfect. That play will be THE defining moment for both of them.

Kobe's statue should be completely disassociated from Shaq.

i just thought that no matter how much we hated it,

those (96-2004) were kobe/shaq era in lakers history and that 3peat will never be a reality if any of those two didn’t played for us…but should the buss family decided to build only kobe’s, an “81 pts statue” seemed ideal…

Sorry Shaq, hope you like the plaque...

That’s as far as I’ll go for Shaq. Yes, he helped us win 3 more titles, but, after that, he was average at best. Kareem on the other hand was an Ambassodor of the game for many years after his retirement, and most of that was spent talking about how great the Lakers were as an organization as well as a great member of the NBA. Kareem deserves to be a little peeved. But, I would give him statue well before Shaq. Just a better all around guy.

Shaq was a laker for 5 years...

..A statue is an honor that should be reserved for organization changing players. Kareem was a Laker for 14 years and brought 5 championships, Magic was the face of the franchise throughout his five championships and 14 years, and Kobe deserves a statue because he has had a long career as a Laker and helped win 5 championships as well…Jordan was by far the Bulls best player and brought them six championships, and a new image. Not to mention that the bulls hadn’t even won a division championship before he came…NO STATUE FOR SHAQ! (be hsppy sbout the jersey)

by Claude M on Jun 8, 2011 9:33 AM PDT reply actions

Shaq was a Laker for 8 years

But he still doesn’t deserve a statue.
