Jordan’s Mystique Can Never Be Replaced
This is an article that some people will agree with and some will not, but this is definitely a topic that ALL NBA fans have discussed at some point in their lives. Can any player ever be better than Michael Jordan? Of course there has been a lot of talk about whether Kobe Bryant or LeBron James could ever surpass the status of Michael Jordan and most people believe that it will all come down to total championships and career averages.

As a player marketing tool and businessman? Not until the next big media technology is embraced more by the NBA.
As a player? Definitely. There is no reason why not.

This. I've been researching this for a while and plan on writing a FanPost about it over the summer.
Jordan is the greatest marketed player ever.

He is, but I meant in terms of like
the way the NBA marketed him and how he profited and the NBA profited off of it. Magic and Bird built the legacy, but both had to retire before they could share in the glory that has solely been attributed to Jordan

Can any player be better than Jordan?
I can name three, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. I might even throw Oscar Robertson in the discussion as well.
LIES!
Didn’t you know Michael Jordan made the original peach basket with his own hands when he invented the game of basketball? Naismith stole the idea from him.

depends on what you're calling better
Is better how much the game changed because of them? If so Wilt has to be at the top.
Is better defined by how many championship rings you have? If so, Russell destroys everyone.
Is better defined by how many points you score? If so, Kareem is the best.
It all comes down to definition, and for someone at 6’6" to be as dominating on the offensive and defensive side of the ball as Jordan, is truly amazing. In my opinion he’s better than all three of them.
Kobe is a more prolific scorer than Jordan. He had the moves Jordan had late in his career when he was still young and it showed. His defense was not as smothering as Jordans, but he made up for it on offense.
I’m not really sure why Lakers fans are so pent up rage wise about Michael Jordan, you’re basically watching the closest facsimile there will ever been when you watch Kobe play.
Nothing would make me happier than seeing CP3 traded to the Lakers. Mitch, make it happen!
No one mentioned Kobe

I mentioned Kobe
Because he deserves to be in the conversation.

Kobe isn't averaging 30 pts a game.
Not sure how he is a more prolific scorer.

Not this year we werent. Like CA says, its the beginning of the end for Kobe. MJ was a fucking BEAST at 32.
MJ at 32 was in like his 10th-11th year in the NBA
Kobe is in his 15th. I think, we’d see a difference in performance.

lets not forget that MJ
did not have to deal with nearly as many injuries (although he did have one bigger injury than anything Kobe’s had).
Those injuries and playing through them the way Kobe does definitely adds a lot of wear and tear.

Its not the age, its the mileage
You cant get caught up in just age when comparing Kobe to MJ at 32 years old. At 32 years old Kobe has played in 1,103 regular season games and logged 40,145 regular season minutes. He has also played in 208 playoff games and 8,165 minutes during those playoff games. Jordan for his ENTIRE CAREER (which ended at age 39) played 1,072 regular season games, logged 41,010 regular season minutes. He played 179 playoff games for his career and 7,474 minutes during the playoffs. With the expection of regular season minutes played, Kobe has already eclipsed those other stats so really, if you want to compare these two guys at this point in time you have to compare the 32 year old Bryant with the 39 year old Jordan. And as we all know Jordan was certainly no “beast” at 39 with the Wizards.
Oh no you didn't
Jordan was a beast 39. Don’t you know he’s the oldest player to score 50. STRAIGHT BEAST!!!!!!!!
/sarcasm
But please for real lets not start this roundabout debate

even then it is not the same...39 is 39.
Age matters.
So does mileage.
You have to take both into account not just one.
Maybe a 32 year old Kobe vs a 34 year old Jordan.
One reason I think Jordan will always be seen as better than Kobe is because Kobe is so similar to Jordan, but Jordan was first.

And Oscar Robertson and Dr. J were before Jordan. Why aren't they in the discussion?
Enough of this “Jordan was first” bullshit. He wasn’t, period.

Jordan
There is no pent up rage about Jordan among Laker fans. The game did not begin and end with Michael Jeffrey Jordan. He was definitely one of the all time greats and I think he’s the 4th best player of all time but for a lot of Jordan fanboys thats not enough. He has to be the greatest ever and I just dont agree. At 6’5" 220 lbs Oscar Robertson was just as dominating (of not more so) than Jordan. Elgin Baylor was no slouch either but they did not play in the ESPN era so quite often their achievements get brushed aside simply because people either have short memories or are too lazy to really go back and examine the stats. Their exploits arent easily excessible on YouTube so they get slighted at times.
Jordan was great, no doubt about it. I enjoyed watching him play during his hay day but in my opinion the best anybody can do is 4th because Kareem, Russell and Wilt are locked in at numbers 1, 2 and 3 all time. Just my opinion.
Not all Laker fans maybe
But some of the ones here definitely have pent up rage about Jordan and what they feel is hype.
Not really sure what justification you are using for declaring Jordan less than Kareem, Russell, and Wilt but I’d be interested in hearing it (especially since Wilt is more of an argument that size > all since that was his main gift)
Nothing would make me happier than seeing CP3 traded to the Lakers. Mitch, make it happen!
Wilt is a beast
there’s no getting around it. Size wasn’t his main gift. The guy led the league in asts one year just because he wanted to. Wilt = beast. We need to stop trying to denigrate the man and just recognize how great he was.

ok, if kobe gets ring #6, and matches jordan, would kobe then be the G.O.A.T.?
or is kobe going to have to sell a trillion shoes/apparel, cologne, dvd’s…etc, etc.? to be even considered next to jordan?

no, you can't become the GOAT if you match the GOAT.
You must beat the GOAT.
I.e. career avg of 31 pts, 7 rebs, 6 assists and 7 rings.

Kobe is a better player. I have watched every single big game each has played, Kobe is.
I put it this way: If you could have one of them in their prime on your team to win a game to save your life, it’s a draw except that Kobe’s range is/was better at his height. So the edge is to Kobe.
That said, he isn’t as great as MJ until he gets that 6th ring. He can boldly claim to be the greatest the second he gets his 7th ring, if he’s in that position.
My humble opinion.
Everything else is marketing, ESPN/Internet blowing up, etc. MJ will probably always have that edge. But on the court it’s chips and how you play the game. These two are a lot closer in that respect than many would care to admit.
"I was just letting the shots fly. You know, I don't leave any bullets in the chamber."
"Everything negative- pressure, challenges- is all an opportunity for me to rise."

"Pshh, 'Show Me.' (smirking) Yeah, I've heard that."
-Sam Bradford
Kobe is a better offensive player
Jordan has his ass kicked on the defensive end
Nothing would make me happier than seeing CP3 traded to the Lakers. Mitch, make it happen!
I'd say he has his ass kicked on both ends.

hes better because you observe it so?
Show me stats that say Kobe’s range is better.
Here’s general stats
Career FG% 49.7, FT% 83.5, RPG 6.2, APG 5.3, Steals 2.35, PPG 30.1
His playoff stats are even BETTER:
Playoff FG% 48.7, FT% 82.38, RPG 6.4, APG 5.7, Steals 2.1, PPG 33.4
Kobe
Career FG% 45.4, FT% 83.7, RPG 5.3, APG 4.7, SPG 1.6, PPG 25.3
Playoff FG% 44.6, FT% 82, RPG 3.4, APG 3.3, SPG 1.5, PPG 22.8
In short…thus far your eyeball test fails.
Proud member of Club FTR. falconPUNCH! for president!
TS% over their career is about equal even taking away Jordan's
2 later years. The difference is made up by Kobe’s career better 3-pt fg%. i.e more range.
but again, lets not rehash this

Jordan hit the longer mid range more consistently.

I don't have the data for that
but either way it is irrelevant because everyone hates long twos anyway. lol. jk

Jordan Era
First, it is hard to compare players across generations. MJ was without question the most dominate player of his generation. If the measure of greatness is to vanquish the best of his time, he has no peer. MJ simply said “Next.” Bird, Nique, Bad Boys, Magic, Clyde Glide, Sir Charles, The Glove, The Mailman, Stockton…………………all tipped their hat to MJ. MJ humbled a young Kobe as well. Let’s try to foget AI breaking MJ’s ankles. :)
The other factor that most must acknowledge is that MJ played during a time when his explosiveness was limited by defensive rules that current players have never experienced. I have it on authority from NBAers that if MJ played under today’s defensive rules, he would have added 5 to 8 pts per game to his averages. Recall full hand checks, the chucks in the lane and the Jordan Rules. Kobe has better range from three but MJ had better range above the rim and in traffic. Lebron is bigger and stronger, but he lacks the killer instinct that MJ and Kobe share……………..this game is mine, I have the ball and NO ONE is going to stop me………………….. and if it is playoff time, forget about it.
When the game is on the line who do you want with the ball? MJ never met a challenge he did not overcome. MJ by a hair. Kobe right there. IMHO
Ahh The Foolishness & downright Dumbness of you youngsters
Bill Russel, Julius Erving (who MJ had to copy his famous dunk lmao) Hell Oscar Roberston who AVERAGED a triple double his whole career, all waaay better than Michael Jordan could ever have dreamed of being. MJ maybe number 5 on the all time list at best. See now think hmm MJ could not even get to a championship series until Magic, Bird and even Isaiah finally got past their peaks. Coincidence. No. It took the Zen Master and weak NBA in transition from it’s from stars for MJ to finally get there and if you MJ butt likkers would just stop and really think about it with your feeble MJ worshipping minds you would realize that. The greatest sheesh, child please! A marketing phenom yes. It’s the shoes! Ha! The best player ever not even close.Problem is you young ins never even seen say Tiny Archibald, Pistol Pete Maravich, Elgin Baylor or Jerry West play in their prime. I could go on and on but as my final thing to say do you all really believe that after his old college team mate Sam Perkins buts that 3 pointer from the corner to take game 1 in his (MJ’s) first championship series that if Magic Johnson does not pull his hamstring severely Michael Jordan does not even win that first ring. yeah I have seen them all play and MJ ain;’t even close to the best ever. All u MJ junkies can go shoot that crap up your own butts.
