Blame Mitch?
It seems like it's been forever since Laker fans were basically calling for Mitch Kupcak's head. It was actually only 4 years ago, but so much has changed in Lakerland since then. The team has been to three straight finals, winning 2 of them. Kobe has an MVP award, Lamar has a 6th man of th year award, and the Lake show are perennial contenders again.
But this first round series with NO was exposed what has been a glaring weakness with the Lakers for the better part of a decade. And it really brings up the question, why hasn't this need been addressed? And the easy answer in the past was that they didn't need to. With Pau, Bynum, and Odom the team has had the length and athleticism to deal with this. But the decline of D-Fish has been obvious the past few season, as the Lakers have constantly been burned by quick, athletic points guards. And year after year Fish is getting ripped apart in the media and with fans for his inability to defend the position. While it's true he has his share of problems, you cannot blame him for his physical shortcomings and advanced age. Rather, the blame should fall on the person who has been given WAY TOO MUCH credit for the job he's done. MITCH KUPCHAK.
Just think about the moves the Lakers have made since Jerry West left and Kupchak took over. Yes, Kupchak brought Pau Gasol to the team. But it's not as if that trade showed great vision or basketball acumen on his part. It was a no brainer. The only moves you could argue Kupchak made that really showed any sort of insight on his part was trading Vladimir Radmanovic for Adam Morrison and Shannon Brown and the trade for Ariza. But let's be honest. He didn't make the Vlad trade because of the potential he saw in Brown. He made to to fix a a mistake he made in giving Vlad the MLE and to cut salary.
Want more proof? Here's a list of the moves Kupchak has made since taking over:
Signed Smush Parker to be a starting PG
Shaq for Odom, Caron Butler, and Brian Grant
This trade wouldn't have been too awful if not for this next move.....
Caron Butler for Kwame Brown
Signed Radmanovic to a 5 year $31 Million contract
Signed Luke Walton to a 6 year $30 Million contract
Worst part about this contract is that it's esclating. In 2 years, Luke will make SIX MILLION!!!! wow......
Signed Sasha Vujacic to a 3 year $15 million contract
Drafted Toney Douglas, but then immediately traded him to the Knicks. The same Toney Douglas who is playing valuable minutes as a backup PG for NY right now. Think the Lakers could use him in this series?
He also had the opportunity the off season to sign Raymond Felton, who just the sort of quick explosive PG the Lakers have problems with. But instead he signed Steve Blake, who while a steady player, lacks the athleticism and explosive to provide the quickness the Lakers need.
I know I'm leaving out the Bynum pick. But it's pretty common knowledge at the point that the Bynum decision belonged to Jim Buss. In fact, I'm not so sure that if it weren't for Jim Buss that Kupchak wouldn't have traded Drew for Kidd just to appease Kobe.
So yes, the Lakers have won 2 straight titles. Yes, they've been to 3 straight Finals. But is that thanks to moves that Mitch Kupchak made or in spite of several moves that he has made?
And if Memphis hadn't given us Pau Gasol, would Kupchak even still have a job?

Yeah, I think what's lost here is that the alternative to that Shaq trade was a Kobe trade.
Trading Kobe going into his prime? That’s a stupid move, so you get the most versatile player you can find to fill the hole left by Shaq and you hope for the best. I’m not sure of the inner workings of the Lakers, but those garbage players you mentioned were signed to a team in a rebuilding process, for most teams that can take years to decades to never. However, when given the proper authorization and room to work with, we’ve seen what he could bring in to help us win, and we’re sitting on back to back championships as a testament. Tweaking the roster, upgrading at vital positions. However, throwing in a young point guard into one the most complicated offensive systems surrounded by a group of impatient and angry veterans just doesn’t seem like a good idea.
That's right, I'm one of those sober, rational, reasonably excited, non-violent Laker fans, don't doubt our existence.
Buss definitely made the right decision in keeping Kobe and letting go of Shaq.

With the exception of the Walton contract and the Butler for Kwame trade
He really hasn’t had moves that have been bad, besides the trading draft picks part, which probably was an order from the top due to Buss being concerned about finances. You can nitpick his moves, but it’s hard to find fault with most of them. For instance, Sasha had just finished coming off a career year that would have been totally worth $15 million/3 years if he continued that level of play.
Felton might have been worth the full midlevel, sure, but probably not at the level he produced at in Charlotte rather than the borderline All-Star play that typified his stay with the Knicks this year, all of which no one could have predicted. I would have preferred Ridnour over Blake largely due to the former’s shooting prowess, but it’s hard to find fault with a guy who looks like he’s become more comfortable in the offense. Passing on Felton (and Mike Miller, who was also available for the midlevel), also netted us both Blake and Barnes, which was more valuable than just one of the aforementioned and say Earl Watson.

without Kwame’s expiring contract there is no Pau. Win win

Eh, that's only with the benefit of hindsight though
It’s obviously fantastic that Mitch was opportunistic enough to take advantage of the Pau trade thanks to Kwame’s expiring, but can’t hold the two side by side.

Hindsight is 20/20.
Luke was a great player when he received the deal. Mitch had no idea that he would suffer a back injury. All the other deals are similar. They made sense at the time.
Same thing with Portland and their draft history. Most other teams would have picked the exact same player (Bowie over Jordan, Oden over Durant). You can’t blame them for not being able to predict the future.

WHEN? WHAT YEAR? WHAT LIFETIME? Luke Walton has NEVER been remotely close to good, forget great!!!! His numbers have declined every single year that he’s been in the league. The only reason he got that contract was because his father has a lot of pull. But to say that Luke was a ‘great’ player, what PS3 or XBox game are you playing?

Maybe “great” isn’t the best term, but he was a decent player before his back injury.

You think Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook can stay in front of each other?
There's a big difference between "able to stay somewhat in front of someone and recover in time if the help is timely"
And “so far behind the screen or the penetration as to be completely taken out of the play.” Decent PG defenders are the former, Fisher is firmly in the latter.

How about some highlights
- Turned Radmonovic and Chris Mihm into Adam Morrison (expiring K) and Shannon Brown (back-up sg on a championship team.)
- Traded for Pau Gasol (notice how the Grizzlies are in the post season and competing with the Spurs? Yeah that trade wasn’t entirely highway robbery)
- Turned Brian Cook into Trevor Ariza (in hindsight, this was even more of a steal than the Gasol trade)
- Made the decision to go with Ron Artest over Trevor Ariza (in hindsight, amazing choice)
- Drafted Andrew Bynum
- Inked basically an entire bench unit for less than what they are worth (Shannon Brown, Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, and Lamar Odom all could be making more money)

heres the deal laker fans...
the lakers are the most loved/hated team next to the yankees! dr. buss is the george steinbrenner of the n.b.a. bottom line, if the lakers really wanted to? they can get ANYBODY-THEY- WANT, when they want! and with that billion dollar t.v. contract the lakers just signed. i “kinda”? feel sorry for the rest of the league.
the lakers have the money, big market, fame, and last but not least…16 championships! what star player woulnt want to be a part of that? thats why i see some bold moves next yr. as long as the lakers are winning championships, mr. buss will continue to pay the luxury tax, but when its time to slash payroll/players? i see some key players out. like ive always stated, the lakers dont rebuild, they reload. thats why i can see the lakers signing dwight howard, and cp3 next yr.
but i will say this, there was some questionable moves this yr that had me scratching my head, like the trading for joe smith, who hasnt hit the court since he got to L.A. and not pulling the trigger for another good pg before the trade deadline…maybe the lakers are bracing for whats to come in the offseason, championship or not? like roster moves to make another bold splash for 2012!? my prediction…dwight howard will be a laker in 2012! with cp3, not far behind, (if the knicks dont hit him up 1st). its going to be a whole new roster to team up with kobe in 2012! its official laker fans…the dwight howard sweepstakes will be in effect after the finals!!
He's made some mistakes in evaluating talent, but every GM in the league has.
Those blemishes are, in my opinion, outweighed by the Gasol and Ariza trades, as well as the Artest signing. He’s overpayed his own players and has misfired on some draft picks, but which GM hasn’t?

sure he made a few gaffes along the way but he ultimately kept Kobe in LA and brought the team back to contention in a very short amount of time with great little moves in tandem with the Gasol trade.

I voted Above Average.
Major blunders that keep him from getting an Excellent:
1. Not giving Horace Grant (00-01) a 1 or 2-year contract immediately after the 2001 championship. That was the year the Lakers dominated in the playoffs. And the only year of the 99-02 three-peat that the Lakers had an established starting power forward.
With Mitch making him wait, Grant then signed with Orlando for about the same amount the Lakers could have signed him for. What went on there?
2. Thinking that he could get away with making a real team out of Smush Parker (05-07), Luke Walton (03-present), Vladimir Radmanovic (06-09), and Kwame Brown (05-08) in the mid 2000s.
3. Giving Luke Walton a 6-year/$30M deal (07/08-12/13), when no other team was even making a move to pressure him to do so. I’ve never understood that contract in any way, shape, or form.
4. Trading Caron Butler (04-05) for Kwame Brown (Ouch!).
Major moves that make him Above Average:
1. Recovering from the Kwame Brown disaster by trading him for Pau Gasol (08-present).
All GMs make mistakes. The good ones manage to get out of the bad situation.
Whether it was luck, good timing, or shrewd bargaining, it was an excellent recovery.
2. Traded Vladimir Radmanovic for Shannon Brown (09), and re-signed him (09-11, 10-12) to a 2-year/$2+M contract. Good signing and value.
Shannon was high on the Laker’s board back in 2006, but Cleveland drafted Shannon immediately before the Lakers and Jordan Farmar (06-10) unexpectedly slid down to the Lakers 26th pick.
The Lakers were very familiar with Shannon. That trade wasn’t just about Radmanovic’s and Morrison’s contracts.
3. Trading Brian Cook (03-07) and Maurice Evans (06-07) for Trevor Ariza (07-09). Really good move.
4. Learned from the Luke Walton debacle and only gave Sasha Vujacic (04-07, 08-10) a 3-year/$15M deal. It was enough time for Sasha to prove himself, but not a ball-and-chain contract if he didn’t. And don’t forget those Game 7 free throws. Definitely worth his contract for those.
5. Signed Ron Artest (09-14) to a 5-year/$33M contract. See 2010 Finals. No further explanation needed.
6. Re-signed Lamar Odom (09-13) to a 4-year/$33M contract. No one can argue this one.
Bynum was the best pick at #10 in 2005, Jim Buss or no. The only “sure” pick that went after Bynum was Danny Granger. Nate Robinson, Jarrett Jack, and David Lee were not sure picks.
Brandon Bass, Monta Ellis, and Marcin Gortat were second round picks, which are always hit-or-miss.
Of those, only Lee and Gortat are bigs.
Signed Bynum to a 4-year/$58M in 2008. A good deal for both. Bynum gets big money, but the Lakers keep it to 4 years so in case of a major injury it won’t become the ball-and-chain type.
Toney Douglas (09) does look like a mistake, but the story is it was ordered from above to save money. Also, he might not have developed as quickly since he probably wouldn’t get as much playing time with the Lakers.
Felton got a 2-year/$15M contract, way over Blake’s and the MLE. So that’s not a valid criticism.
Sasha for Joe Smith just to save $4M ($8M w/tax) in the year you’re trying to 3-peat? Doesn’t seem good, so that’s a negative.
Seems like that’s a time Mitch could have gone after a defensive minded PG.
The Lakers have been to three straight Finals and won two straight titles because of moves Kupchak made. Give him his due.
But they also were a “lower seed playoff” team in the mid 2000s due to moves he made. He’s not perfect.
But overall, not too bad.
As for PGs, maybe Mitch can grab Deron Williams and raise his grade to Excellent!
You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!
Everyone has made some mistakes
But the bottom line is, this guy has put together a team that is back-to-back defending champions with a legitimate chance at a 3-peat. He’s made some bad moves, but many of those were in hindsight. If Luke and Sasha continued their level of play when they got their contracts, the contracts wouldn’t be that bad. Luke was actually a solid starter for a season.
But the guy has done so many good things to help make this a championship team. The resigning of Derek Fisher, the trade for Pau Gasol, trading for Ariza, getting Lamar Odom. Getting Shannon Brown, and then all his moves this year to improve the Lakers bench by bringing in Matt Barnes and Steve Blake. The signing of Ron Artest was a good move and it paid off huge already, with him being a big defensive contributer in the playoffs last year and scoring 20 points in Game 7. He’s made a LOT of good moves.
You can find mistakes made by any GM, in ANY sport. But if you look at the results, not many people are better than Mitch Kupchak.

Oh do I soooooo agree, sorry but I’ve hated his moves, I didn’t like the Blake pickup, Lakers had to work with what they had but they could of squeezed alittle more out in my opinion for others on the market, Kirk Hinrich in particular, well can’t get too mad now, we are left with the parts we have, the big man Gasol need to wake his wimp ass up and score 30 on them damn short ass Hornets, thats all I got to say about that.

Citing Tony Douglas as a plus or minus is facetious because that was the Knicks pick from the very begining chosen by their front office. The Lakers likely would not have selected a guard at that position for their own pick.
But really, would you rather have Lamar Odom or Tony Douglas? Because the money the Lakers save on their draft picks are what allows them to afford him.
