First time ever over on Celtics Blog

they’re all completely in disbelief and outraged over this trade. As much as I hate dem leprechauns, I must admit Miami and Chicago are probably favorites now to come out

We can all thank Marquis Daniels for this.

I hope he gets well, but if he hadnt of gotten hurt, Perkins would still be there.

Meh, fuck 'em. They're Celtics.

Besides, Miami still has to beat them.

They've lost to Boston twice, we've lost to them once.

I still think they have to beat Boston to get to the Finals. We don’t need to beat Miami to get anywhere.

why is no one mentioning what this does for OKC?

The one glaring weakness for that club, besides inexperience, was interior size, and they just addressed that. Plus, they added some toughness and championship experience. Green was very inconsistent from the outside, and now they will focused more on keeping the ball in the hands of Westbrook and Durant at the end of games, so I think anything they lost on the offensive end is going to be more than offset by gains in interior D.

Even so

They are still the fourth best team in the west. They still haven’t been out of the first round.

by 17andover on Feb 24, 2011 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

They were fine w/o Perkins during the 1st half of the season

so they should still be fine in the east (unless both O’Neals go down)

It does make life easier for the Lakers, though (and possibly the Magic since it seems Perks is the only one to bother Dwight)

Now I see Portland got him for a backup Center and second round pick… WTF IS GOING ON IN THE LEAGUE!!?

I dunno

I personally think it’ll make them a helluvalot better. Monta is incredible offensively, but he kills the team and he can’t play the point/too small for the two

Makes them better defensively

but I don’t see why they would’ve done it when they still don’t have the frontline to be great on defense and I don’t think Curry is ready to bear Monta’s scoring load even though everyone is really high on him

When your team is

as far over the cap as the Lakers are, 1st round picks are mostly money and they thought they needed a backup for Pau because Theo is pretty much gone. I hate it too, but it seemed like the right move at the time. I don’t think anyone foresaw this firesale

On the surface what you're saying is true

But Smith hasnt even seen the court…Maybe i hold a lil more value for a 1st round pick. Especially with a team as old as the Lakers because that’s one way they get some sort of youth on the team.

Well of course now the pick

has value, but I don’t think anyone thought so many trades would be happening. I mean, OKC has shied away from trading for players and other than the Mavs it didn’t look like any drastic moves would be made. I’m so curious as to what is all this motivation to move players and move picks

I see your point and i said when they 1st made the deal

wtf are they tradin a 1st for Smith.for? The firesale with 1st’s being used really just confirmed my thinking. I dont know about anyone else but OKC is a scary team with Perkins and Nate. Nevermind the fact they gave the Lakers all they could handle last year and they have gotten better while the Lakers are basically the same team just a year older..

by EmmCeee on Feb 24, 2011 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

OKC is scary on paper

but we still have to see how they’ll play. Personally, I don’t really care that they got Nate because they can only use him for speed, his height always gives us an advantage against him for whoever he is guarding. He’ll win them some games, but disappear just like he did with the C’s

You're right it still remains to be seen how he fits but Perkins and the way he plays is a perfect fit

Im not so sure them havin Nate gives us an advantage simply because our PG’s are Fisher and Blake. If anything it gives them even more of an advantage because they replace speed with more speed off the bench….It does make for an interesting 2nd half of the season

2nd/3rd in the West just doesn't cut it for perfectionist spectators

Meanwhile, the Actual team is practicing, biding their time and getting better.

People on the outside are always gonna bitch and moan; but I couldn’t justify a big move on a team that just won one of the biggest championships in recent history… unless the player that was traded didn’t play much due to injury and could be swapped for a top3 player in the NBA. (#teammelo) Even then, it’s not that big a deal. LA is good. They’re 3 trips deep into championship runs… the regular season is naught but a training exercise. they’ve earned that right.

by Jevon O on Feb 24, 2011 1:16 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

Eh i was back and forth on the Melo deal

I didnt say the Lakers needed to make a Big deal but getting a shooter would have been nice. Im on #teamtradeRon and imo that wouldnt even be a big deal because he hasnt given the team much of anything this year anyway.

Honestly the only season the Lakers actually played below reg season expectations was last year and they had all the could handle in the playoffs. That tells me we can probably expect the same thing only minus HCA which was HUGE for us last year. Not to mention the teams that are going to make the playoffs in the West are getting better while we’ve stayed the same and are getting older

Couldn’t we have sent Brown and a second rounder? Brown might have nixed that, but it was probably worth a try.

He won't get minutes though.

They aren’t going to play KG at 5 and Green at 4 as that would kill them defensively. So they essentially traded Perkins for 2 backups. Green won’t take minutes from Pierce and Allen.

What Jevon O said.

Jeff Green is hugely inconsistent in every facet of the game. At least with Perkins you could always rely on solid D and 75 tantrums per game. Green doesn’t shoot well consistently, nor does he rebound very well and he is a terribly level headed human being making who does not frown for no reason.

by Derek Fisher's Intangibles on Feb 24, 2011 3:44 PM PST up reply actions

I thought they were fine after they traded Perkins because....

they still have KG, Big Baby, and Erden, but they traded the latter. The growing rumor is that Murphy might be heading to the Celtics when bought out.

Jeff Green should help, he’s a better player when playing at the three than the four. They really needed a back-up three since Daniels went down. Might need another wing player.

Much of their success depends on Shaq and Jermaine. Maybe they know something that we don’t.

i see him as jr smith in earl watson's body.

i think he would strive offensively if he got 30+ mins. Sadly, no respectable team would play him at shooting guard for extended period as his height put him at a disadvantage on defense. Still, he’s a good player to have of the bench for energy, scoring and the occasional steal. I could be overrating him though.

good question...

now that phil jacksons going to ride off into the sunset, the coaching job in limbo, million dollar question is, what system is the new regime going to run? the triangle never needed an elite point guard to run it, but now that phils gone?

more up-tempo? if so, then cp3 type point guard for sure! they (lakers) should have started to think ahead, right away. moving some players for more youth, to get a head start, like the knicks, nets did. and after what i saw with dwight howard, after the loss to sac-town, hes not to happy at all! so with that, the official…“dwight howard watch” is in effect!

Bynum, Odom's non-guaranteed contract, picks, and any of the young guys

Kupchak should definitely balk at anything more than that, and should really try to only trade one of the Bynum/Odom/Gasol trio.

If CP3 can prove that his knees will hold up

I’d be amenable to taking him over Howard. He probably single-handedly extends Kobe’s career by a couple years by forcing him to play off the ball more, and he’d be a terrific complement to Kobe and Pau.

Not necessarily, considering how many players in the west got "jilted" this year

The likes of Ray Allen, Pierce, & Bosh wouldn’t have made the all Star list if they were in the west.

If anything, it’ll just mean that things are getting more even.

Nah cuz

the reason so many West people got jilted was because they aren’t as good as the people who made it. With the exception of players like LMA, there weren’t many others who are All Stars that missed

Blazers also got Gerald Wallace for potato chips.

One of the picks was obtained for Bayless; the other is the first rounder next year.

The Blazers’ last 3 first round picks: Victor Claver, injured in Spain, never apt to play in the NBA; Luke Babbitt, the current incarnation of Adam Morrison in the NBA, ‘cept not as good; and Elliott Williams, out for the year with double knee surgery. I’ll get back to ya on him.

In other words: potato chips.

wowsers

What a day!

I’m impressed by the moves by Portland and Oklahoma City. I’m worried big time about a Portland first round matchup, or OKC in the Conference Finals where the refs allow alot more physicality.

I’m also wondering what the back end of the playoffs are going to look like. I think we can pencil SA, LA, DAL, and OKC in the Top 4 seeds, and NO and POR as the 5th and 6th seeds. After that, what? Is Denver and Utah going to slip, allowing teams like Memphis or Phoenix to slip in? It’s going to be a fun finish!

And as for Boston, don’t count them out. They’ll still be around, but Chicago might be able to pull the upset now. Or maybe even Atlanta.

Some of these trades seem nonsensical.

Perkins for Green and Dragic for Brooks both seem ill conceived and extremely short-sighted on the parts of the Celtics and the Suns, respectively. I do like Battier to the Grizzlies though, even if I don’t know what to make of Wallace to the Blazers.

by HaikenEdge on Feb 24, 2011 3:17 PM PST reply actions

Hard to say what all of these trades mean

I do think, however, Boston knows that it has to focus on its own conference before worrying about the Lakers. They have to make sure they can run with teams like Miami and New York who are lightning quick now.

His idea how ever? Kinda dumb, and reactive. Wait for the other shoe to drop. If we traded Semih and Harangody, we have 2 open roster spots to fill. Something else is coming.

Panicking and saying to hand tickets to miami? That’s just stupid. Hold up before you all jump off a damn bridge.

But outside of "Damn" I haven’t uttered a single swear. Kindergartners say worse things than Idiot, Stupid and Dumb.

And further more, you do realize that there is a massive difference between calling an individual dumb and calling their ideas dumb. For instance. The idea that you would ban someone for the use of the word dumb or stupid IS stupid. You aren’t stupid, the rule is.

I’d expected so much more from a Boston blog. Don’t go over to Overthemonster any time soon, I don’t think your mind will comprehend the words on those pages.

I also think Ainge is getting too much crap for this deal. I mean, he must have a damn good reason for this move. I can’t think of one but this isn’t just any trade.

This is quite a dilemma

On one hand we want to be happy that the Celts lost their major interior defensive player which would make the lakers’ lives much easier scoring inside but on the other hand now the celts are much more vulnerable to the miami heat and I still want to see a celts-lakers finals. Damn so many mixed emotions.

idk how u guys feel but i believe

lakers should either tank it or put extra effort to get a seed in way that they avoid playing OKC. No i dont fear them or neither does LA, but that series will definitely be fought hard and the winner will be exhausted by the time they reach next round. So LA should let SA/Dallas deal with it and get 3rd seed, letting OKC get 4th..

How could Ainge do this move while supposedly "thinking of the future"

Does he honestly think Dwight would choose cold, evil Boston over sunny, celebrity-filled LA? Seriously?!

I really have no clue why Ainge would do this trade. Green is an OK player, but not anything spectacular, plus he sucks on D. Krstic is also pretty bad. Basically, the C’s are placing all their chips on the O’Neal’s health, which is a GREAT idea. Really, Boston spends all offseason getting bigger, then scrap it all like that? And who’s going to save them? Troy “I average 3.6 ppg and 4.2 rpg” Murphy, Leon “I can’t stay on the court or get playing time in Cleveland” Powe or Rasual “I just suck” Butler?

Good for us tho, I guess.

Fuckin so called "sports analysts"

I was listening to the radio and the radio dude on AM710 was having a serious chicken little moment. He went on a rant on how the Lakers wouldn’t beat the Thunder now that they have Perkins. We need to put this shit to rest RIGHT-THE-FUCK-NOW!

Perkins is NOT the player they needed to put them into the realm of being a title contender. It filled a need but that is a big difference from being considered a title contender.

"Hate me or love me. Its one or the other; always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fadeaway, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons." - Kobe Jelly Bean Bryant

by Jelly Bean on Feb 24, 2011 11:33 PM PST reply actions

People do realize that their frontcourt is Ibaka-Perkins, right?

How on earth are they scoring with that lineup? They’ll be beastly defensively but between Perkins’ offensive ineptitude and Ibaka being limited to midrange shots, that’s not a whole lot of offense. It was a good move because Green is horribly overrated but at least he provided floor spacing. There’s none of that here. Durant definitely needs to learn how to post up to make the most headway out of that lineup.

by Ben R on Feb 24, 2011 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

Thank you!

It definitely was a trade that benefited OKC but what made Perkins great in Boston was that he didn’t have to worry about offense because of KG.

by Jelly Bean on Feb 24, 2011 11:43 PM PST up reply actions

The only way I can see this working out

Is if Brooks starts to play Harden a lot more for floor spacing, or they’re just going to have big problems with three offensive liabilities (Sefolosha/Ibaka/Perkins) on the floor a good chunk of the time. Durant is really fucking good, but he’s not dragging this team by sheer force of will offensively like Iverson did in the ’01 playoffs or Kobe did during the middle part of the decade. Not in the West, and definitely not against Ron Artest in a seven game series.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Feb 24, 2011 11:54 PM PST up reply actions

That is why I was never on the "trade Artest" group

He is going to be really valuable in these situations. Everyone talks about his finger but his true limitations are more obvious defensively and he is no longer that guy that you put on the opposition’s best offensive player. Like you said before, if they could have traded for Wallace thats a different story.

wow! if Sefolosha, Ibaka and Perkins start I don’t see how they can beat the Lakers. Especially when free throws become so important in a close game.

Yeah, Arnovitz knows where it's at. Definitely the best analyst for ESPN.

@kevinarnovitz

I’m not going to crown the Thunder because they acquired a word-class screner and system-based defender with no range
Do I do the deal if I’m OKC? You bet. But there isn’t a big on that team who can hit a shot consistently from 15 feet. Sag city.
Ibaka was my preseason MIP. Yes, he’s 44% from 16-23 ft, for a total of 43 FGMs in 54 gms. Want him taking that shot at crunchtime?
Pls let me clarify. I like the deal for OKC. I like Perk. But I don’t see its impact being as profound as some.

Trade winds

OKC just again validated why the Lakers cant trade Drew (memba Melo for Bynum?). Teams are trying to get bigger to match up with the Lakers. The Thunder added some serious beef in the paint with Perkins and Nazr Mohammed. I read the Lakers might be interested in adding another big off hte waiver wire (Troy Murphy) or a shooter (Kapono) if these guys are waived. If that happens maybe Phil might even use them, who knows. Phil is notorious for not playing guys acquired late into the season.
