I'm not necessarily sad. I'm happy about this

I need to know more details, though

We better get Okafor or something more. This takes us completely out of the running for Howard…

Btw that trade can't go through as straight

Bynum/Lamar for CP3. They would take on too much salary. We have to get Okafor or someone.

This is even worse

now we have two players with crappy knees
three if you count Kobe

by Revelationx91 on Dec 8, 2011 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

Paul's knees are fine

and Bynum is getting traded for Howard

Nah

surgically repaired knees for cartilage damage are almost never fine in the long run – at least biologically/physiologically

the only thing Paul has going for him is his small size…which will reduce the amount of stress he puts on his knees

2 30+ year old players for 24 year old CP

Sure they are both great, but they are clearly on decline. I think this is a great deal if we get to keep Bynum

by Barbaroi on Dec 8, 2011 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

This will be great if

(1) Bynum can manage to stay healthy
or
(2) if we can ship Bynum to get Howard in another deal

by Revelationx91 on Dec 8, 2011 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Meh same principle

we get him for his 27,28,29,30,31 seasons which will be fine with me. Pau is already 31, and odom is 32. I don’t think we could have gotten a better return on these 2 (short of the three team with houston proposed earlier)

I like Pau a lot as a guy and wish him well, but this is much better for Lakers future. But I will miss Pau more than I would miss Bynum frankly.

Once D12 says he wants to come here and won’t sign anywhere else, Orlando will have no choice but to trade Howard straight up for Bynum (IIRC, the new cap is more lenient on making the $ match up).

The problem I have is that there is no frontcourt depth and Bynum’s knees can’t handle increase minutes. Thus, the Lakers will have to navigate and find quality backup center and a starting power forward, plus a back at that position.

Now that we have CP3, Howard will want to play for us more than ever, which means the Magic may be forced to trade him to us for dirt cheap.

The New Orleans Hornets are engaged in trade talks with the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets about a three-team trade that would send Chris Paul to the Lakers and Pau Gasol to the Rockets, sources said.

The Hornets would receive either Luis Scola or Kevin Martin, and possibly both, as well as draft picks. Houston owns the New York Knicks’ first-round pick from 2012, as well as its own.

Howard is not going to resign in Orlando

There isn’t a chance of it. He wants to play with CP3, or with a real contender. We are both now. Bynum is the second best thing to Howard as far as Centers go.

They can cut their losses and take Bynum (plus whatever draft picks or extra players we sweeten the deal with) or they can risk Howard walking.

CP3 = the best point guard in this league since Magic Johnson

When we have the best sg in the league already and will be trading for the best C in the league, we will have 3 of the top 10 players in the league.

We will trash teams.

Paul's Meniscus was removed (in part)
Paul underwent surgery on the knee in early February. Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, unable to sew the damaged piece of cartilage, cut it away instead, one of the primary reasons Paul played in just 45 games last season, and New Orleans found itself in the draft lottery instead of the playoffs.

It is unknown how much was removed, but this generally can be beginning of degenerative bone-on-bone conditions.

I’m not super worried about this, but it is a factor.

Hmm, so he'll be backing up either Bynum or Dwight?

Or he’ll be traded along with Bynum for Dwight?

Kobe calls Dwight and tells him to demand that exact trade or he walks. Like a Melo-style hostage deal. :)

another 3 team trade?

Okafor has value but obviously Orland won’t want Okafor AND Bynum. so swap Okafor for another player of his talent on another team…

Lakers just got better. In theory they still have a few pieces to offer for Dwight Howard too. That’s not good.

On paper

C Bynum, Okafor
PF Caracter
SF Metta, Barnes, Ebanks, Walton
SG Kobe, Kapono, Goudelock
PG Paul, Fisher, Blake, Morris

This looks incomplete. We still need Dwight + PF.

Winner: Hornets
Kinda winner: Lakers
Epic Losers: Rockets

I think everyone wins

Rockets get Pau and a ton of cap space. Don’t be surprised if they sign Marc Gasol by the end of the weekend and still be able to get another wing player on the cheap.

If this deal goes down for LA as just Gasol & LO for CP3, then the Lakers gain two trade exceptions, one for $8.9M.

by ________key on Dec 8, 2011 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

Can those exceptions...

Be used in any way to land Howard?

Exceptions would allow

A Bynum for Howard plus immense amounts of fecally-laden contracts

by dubPeacock on Dec 8, 2011 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

they could give up Bynum and another piece making not too much money

for Howard and then absorb Hedo’s contract with the exception

So who has a power forward making about 10-12 million that someone would want to get rid of

in exchange for World Peace? The U.N. perhaps???

Woj:
Kobe Bryant was disappointed to see Gasol go in the deal, a source told Yahoo! Sports. He had been a great facilitator for Bryant and the Lakers out of the post, but Bryant was thrilled about the possibilities of playing with Paul. The point guard can ease a lot of Bryant’s ball-handling and play-making responsibilities, something that will benefit him at 33 years old.
