Lopez Breaks his Foot - A. Smith says Pau and Bynum on the Table
Brook Lopez broke his foot last night, seeming to put any Net trade of him in danger. Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN radio that the Lakers have both Pau and Bynum are on the table (but sounded flippant about it).

Brook's out 4-6 weeks
I’m a Nets fan, but i’m here to be objective. I do consider you guys a threat, but Dwight did request a trade here and it was done until stupid Orlando ownership nixed the deal. I think Kobe will be very hesitant to mortgage any more players after Odom went to Dallas. If i’m correct, Buss loves Bynum. I also think you guys have more needs than a big man. A PG is your biggest area of concern. The reason Stephen A. sounded so flip about it because in the beginning, he predicted NJ gets Dwight because of Brooklyn and wanting to team with Deron there. Orlando will have a month or so to evaluate Brook after he comes back in early February(we’re rushing him back), and if he checks out to Orlando’s liking, he’ll be in the trade. If not, you guys have Dwight. Remember, BK is the master of multi-team deals.
RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
A nice trade of Bynum/Gasol/Blake for Howard/Nelson/Turk would work perfectly for both clubs.
Net fans have a habitual penchant for over estimating how much players are dying to play for them. They sincerely thought Lebron was coming there before the whole world found out what was happening.
A. Smith tosses all kinds of things around. I don’t believe he has any new information, it sounded like he was just throwing out the obvious.
D. Will is going to walk after this year...
Why would Howard want to put himself is the same situation with the Nets that he has with the Magic? Plus it’s cold and taxes are higher… Just not a smart move.

I'm pretty sure Dwight knows that if he goes to the Nets, D. Will is staying.
Hell, I think Williams will stay regardless.

Why would Orlando care what Howard's #1 option is?
Think of the Chris Paul situation – his choices were #1 Knicks, #2 Lakers, #3 (or possibly #4) Clippers. The thing that mattered is that Paul was willing to re-sign with the Knicks, Lakers, Clippers, etc. so any of those teams were willing to deal assets and NO takes the best that they can get. At first, they went with a deal with Paul’s #2 choice the Lakers, but for basketball reasons that fell apart and they got a younger package with the Clip’s, who wasn’t Paul’s #1 or #2 choice of teams, but that didn’t matter since it was a team that Paul was willing to go to and sign with. NO didn’t even think of dealing with the Knicks because they didn’t have the assets.
For Howard, he has made it clear that he would like to join the Nets and Lakers, in that order, prompting both of those teams to be willing to put major trade pieces on the table. It is in Orlando’s best interest to take the best offer despite Dwight’s choices, and even if some dumb team wants to rent Dwight for a year (like the Celtics with Paul), whatever package is best for Orlando is what they should take IMO.
Question....
Do you guys think there is any way possible to make the Howard trade happen without giving up Gasol? I’ve been trying to figure it out but can’t put my finger on it…
It'll come down to how dominant Bynum plays between now and the All-Star break.
If he plays good enough, we might be able to get Howard without giving up Gasol.

don’t think so. No matter how well he plays, he is still an injury risk. Plus Orlando has 5 1st round picks on the table from the Nets.
5 1st round picks?
Where did you get that info from? I only see 2. Lakers should have 2 also.

I heard about the 5 1st round picks as well on the radio
Don’t remember who said it, or who the Nets would give up to which team to get the extra picks
that apparently was the deal that was nixed at the last minute
Chad Ford reported that the Nets “offered everything they could for Howard: Brook Lopez + FIVE 1st Rd picks. Theirs in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 + Rockets 2011 pick.”
Regardless,
The better Bynum plays, the higher his stock. Simple as that.

That's up to debate.
I personally think it’s possible.

sure.
but in that case everything is up for debate. I know of nobody who has suggested that such a trade is possible, other than you.
Late ones. They're relevant but not as important as the primary pieces, i.e. Bynum/Lopez.

I agree
I have been rooting like crazy for Bynum because the better he plays the better his trade value for Howard (plus the better for the Lakers if the trade doesn’t go through of course).
But one thing that Bynum really has in his favor for this year is that he has never been fully utilized in the offense in the past years, and I think with Brown as the coach (and with LO gone), Bynum’s scoring may go way up.
Bynum belongs naturally as a 1st (on a bad team) or 2nd (or at worst a 3rd) scoring option, but on the Lakers last year, Bynum was #5 on the team in field goals attempted per game. Bynum isn’t like a off-screen 3 point shooter whose shots are limited to how often he can get open, Bynum scores effectively off iso’s and can dominate offensively at times if he is fed.
If Bynum stat line is something like 24 pts, 10+ rebounds per game this year (at best if everything goes perfectly), (He was 11.3 pts, 9.4 rbs last year), trading Bynum without Gasol becomes at least a remote possibility. If Bynum has a career year this year, it won’t be an anomaly or just a fluke, it will just him getting his fair share of touches while he grows as a young, developing player.
Agree 100%
Bynum is easily the best center in the West. His health seems to be the only thing holding him down.

Interestingly
In this new offense, Bynum seems to get most of his points without the play being run for him. Previously he was a dead space on the offensive end more often than not without the ball going through him.
