So let me get this straight...

CP3 can’t come to the Lakers because we’re too big of a market…..

News flash: The Clippers are in the SAME FUCKING MARKET!

Fucking bullshit.

The package the Hornets would have received in the deal with the Lakers was as good or better, without a doubt.

by LAMojo on Dec 14, 2011 4:50 PM PST reply actions

Better how?

Sure, with the Lakers package, the Hornets would have avoided being the worst team in the league… but they would have been stuck in mediocrity for years to come. This allows NO to rebuild and sell the team with a clean slate.

Don’t get me wrong. Stern handled this horribly. But in the end, the Hornets are better off from every angle. Obviously, I’m a Clips fan, so I’m sure I’ll get destroyed here for stating the truth. Have at it.

See you on Monday!

At least I'm also a Redskins fan... oh wait. My sports life sucks.

by Clipper T on Dec 15, 2011 2:32 AM PST up reply actions

Oh I get it!

Because the Hornets would have been forced to keep the players they got in the Laker trade for the next five years! Of course!

by LAMojo on Dec 15, 2011 6:55 AM PST up reply actions

The Clippers Trade was better for the Hornets as it initially stood

the Lakers/Rockets trade could have potentially turned out better for the Hornets, but it was about as likely as DH12 coming to the Lakers if CP3 had joined us. (possible-to-probable, but it wasn’t definite by any means)

oops, i meant outside of paul :D

and he’s a good shooter to spread the floor. And his size is good for a combo guard, so he can start off on 2 and play backup 1. he’s played a lot of 2 for denver with ty lawson, and he’s done kobe guarding jobs before

he’s still their 2nd best guard—they’re not going to waste it on playing him as paul’s backup only.

by no stance on Dec 14, 2011 5:11 PM PST up reply actions

He'll be Paul's backup

he’s not a SG. he’s a PG and has never played without the ball like that

billups has shown the ability to play off the ball and so has paul

i’d imagine he would be paul’s backup when paul’s resting, but he’ll probably start off as the starting 2 guard rather than on the bench. (kind of like pau plays PF & C for us)

because i dont see the Lakers thru purple tinted glasses? Because i recognize the fact that this team is in trouble heading to the future? Because i see that we are in a bad spot moving forward with no cap space, an aging roster, and havent developed any young players to have any type of major role with the team? aaah Ok so anybody who doesnt have an absolutely positive outlook for the Lakers is fairweather. by KobeBryantSlamDunkGiant on Dec 14, 2011 5:06 PM PST up reply actions

Each team you named

had different circumstances. They either one were mismanaged, Hornets/Bobcats, or had misplaced their faith in the wrong person as the franchise player, Sixers. the Sixers have enough assets to start completely over with far more than what NO just got for CP3. They would get the picks and bit players and would only be out the above average upside guard that isn’t a franchise player yet either

If I was a GM

I would take multiple short favorable contracts and trade them for picks and build with a mix of youth and veteran leadership not just have rookies out there getting destroyed like the Cavs did with their D-league roster half the year. It’s not like they got scrap overpaid players. The largest contract still would’ve been K-Mart/Okafor. they would’ve been under the cap and now they have to even reach the minimum salary floor by signing terrible players. Plus, they have to improve fast in order to keep Gordon there for more than the year he has before he can opt out.

The Lakers offer kept the Hornets competitive.

The Clippers package does not. Gordon will be good for years to come. Kaman will stay injured. Aminu has high upside but he hasn’t come close to realizing and probably never will. The lottery pick is only as good as the Hornets make it. That won’t lose. They’ll be slaughtered. Nevermind the fact that Ariza will be chucking inefficiently. Okafor isn’t much of scorer. Jack is serviceable. Belinelli is just a shooter. Am I missing somebody?

by E-ROC on Dec 14, 2011 5:06 PM PST up reply actions

Kaman is a roster dump

and Aminu was far potentially horrible last year. The lottery pick is what people are most excited about, but depending on how bad minnesota is they might not even get that high of a pick. i’m thinking it’ll be outside of the top 10

It was even better, the only thing that put the Clippers’ offer over the top was the Minnesota pick, and I hope they make the playoffs.

So, how is this trade worthy of being let through and the Lakers/Rockets trade isn't???

Ugh, whatever. Stern is shown to be colluding to keep the Lakers down…not that this surprises anyone, nor will anything be done about it. Lakers just need to move on, get a PG and some roster depth, and do their best. They still have Kobe, Pau, and if Bynum can stay healthy…watch out! The Clippers still suck.

Feel bad for New Orleans fans, though. They have literally NO reason to go watch their team now.

Its a better haul. I see why they wouldn’t want the player they got offered first. They would be stuck being mediocre for a while. It would be an awesome trade for a team that needs pieces but its a better situation to just blow it all up.

I absolutely loved FOTP.

One of the most unique mixtapes I’ve ever heard. Lyrics were on par with his earlier stuff, and I personally liked him rapping over some dubstep/techno beats, which is completely subjective, of course. I think FOTP was what he wanted Lasers to be before Atlantic fuxed with the process. However, I’m ready for F&L2 to be some classic Lu again.

I liked it, but even if the beats were nice

they often didn’t fit his delivery imo. I got no problem with alternative beats if he uses alternative flow and he didn’t. It just didn’t sound as crisp, but his flow was back to what it was before.

Im so pissed off right now

The Lakers still have a great team and i dont necessarily think that if the CP3 trade went through the Lakers would have been a better team, yet the veto’ing of that trade has just caused pointless headaches, Lamar Odom had a nervous breakdown, we gave him away for really nothing and as each day passes by it seems Mitch did not have a plan B, i mean who can blame him, i don’t think anyone expected Stern to abuse his power like that…

Im not pissed off because another team got CP3, I’m pissed off because it seems the Laker organization is as confused as we are right now and have no sense of direction, but who can blame them, this week has just been in all honesty, a bitch…

One thing that I don't understand is that last year we were all talking about how awesome it

would be to sign Steve Blake and if he really would be more productive there should be no reason for all this PG talk and all we would be needing is a back up for Kobe and Bynum. I really think that Blake needs to be held more accountable for that contract. As Ben R pointed out before that the new offensive style of play is going to help him alot. Lets just see how we do with Blake.

He'll only be playing spot minutes, so it's not exactly a big risk.

Anyways, he’s a stretch four, but can shoot solidly from outside and he cleans up the defensive boards well. He had a bad year last season since he was jerked around in the Nets’ and Celtics’ lineups, but I think he can do well in our system in which he’ll have plenty of open looks.

It'll take them a while to get in sync but they'll still win early

I think they are exciting out of the chute and win early. Teams will have trouble adjusting to the athleticism. Then, the adjustments will come and the Clips will lose some.

As the season progresses the unit will come together and be tough down the stretch.

Out of 66, I’ll say 42-45 wins.

You're kidding, right?

Griffin had essentially his rookie year and was lights out, with not much support around him. Wait until he and Paul are on the same page, which shouldn’t take long.

Griffin is a stone beast and Paul is going make him All Pro.

Look, what I wanted was CP3 to be able to make Bynum All Pro

I hated losing Odom and Gasol, but I figured Paul and Bynum would be spectacular, even if Howard didn’t come our way. Now we still don’t have a PG, lost the 6th man of the year for zero on-court value (couldn’t care less about the tax benefits), and we’re a weaker team.

A year older…and weaker.

The Lakers got screwed over in all this and, at the end of the day, this trade got NO less value. It was a crooked deal.

there is no disputing that. He is not nearly as SKILLFUL as Durant is. Just like LeBron isn’t nearly as skillful as Kobe despite being like two times the athlete anyone in the world is. Blake Griffin is asked to do what for the Clippers

and what is Pau asked to do for the Lakers. Pau is by far the better player here and the complex things he does on the court in a system of all great players is > than what Griffin does as a highlight reel jumper on his team. He’s like an athletic Kevin Love. Monster numbers, lesser results.

I’ll bet money they won’t even be better than the Lakers this year. People are in a panic because we haven’t made any moves except for giving up Odom. We aren’t done yet people, and what we have is still good enough to win it all.

As long as Bynum can stay healthy I expect big things from him. That also benefits Pau, as we can all remember he shut down after taking the bulk of the mins when Bynum was injured to start last season. Having a healthy Bynum benefits Pau and benefits our team.

Chris Paul and Dwight Howard aren’t the only two players in this league that can make a difference. Our FO isn’t done making moves. We will have a solid team this year. We just have to get through all this bullshit first.

Hrm, if we can't pick up Davis or someone like Ridnour via the Sasha TPE.

Then I’d be amenable to doing a Gasol/Bynum for Nelson/Turk/Howard swap if Mitch has a Millsap or Varejeo deal lined up with the Odom TPE. Otherwise, we should wait it out for a Bynum deal seeing as Orlando will probably keep Dwight into the year and the Nets are going to suck terribly with no big additions.

But for some reason im hopeful about Bynum, I personally think he might be a beast this year, don’t get me wrong Dwight Howard is better, but if Bynum has an amazing year, i don’t know if i want to trade him, even for Dwight

by Funkensteinn on Dec 14, 2011 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Bynum would have to be pretty damn good to eclipse Dwight.

Like MVP/DPOY good. Even if he was that good, I’d prefer Dwight because he’s practically indestructible. That said, I agree that Bynum is going to look solid this year.

The problem with Bynum is his health.

If it wasn’t for his healthy I would be contempt with keeping him. But Dwight is already better than him and has always been healthy so it’s a great improvement over Bynum for those reasons.

by PoPs_737 on Dec 14, 2011 6:43 PM PST up reply actions

Only reason i say this

Is because in all honesty i cannot see us getting Dwight without giving up Pau, i think Otis would rather take the Nets deal, but if i was given the opportunity to turn Pau Gasol into a great guard or two solid players to compliment Kobe and a beast Bynum, i would hesitate on D12, not saying D12 isn’t better than Bynum now, but Bynum can still dominate almost any center in the league and building around him and Kobe would not be the most idiotic move and could land the Lakers a championship

by Funkensteinn on Dec 14, 2011 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

Right now I’m expecting the same starting lineup as last year on Christmas. And honestly, Fisher/Bryant/Artest/Gasol/Bynum is still among the best in the Western Conference, even though I think we all hoped for some tweaks.

I don’t see a Gasol/Bynum swap happening. I wish Odom were still here and hopefully a few more bench upgrades are made before the start of the season.

Kaman’s gone after this season (or probably even before), who knows about Aminu, I bet Gordon will leave when his contract is up, and after they all leave, whomever the Hornets draft with Minny’s pick will obviously want to leave as well. Wouldn’t be surprised if this ultimately resulted in the Hornets becoming the Seattle Sonics.

We’re playing Sac on the second game, then Utah, then 5th game against Denver, Lakers will win 3 of their first 5 unless the team has an epic collapse without Bynum, hard to see us beating New York and Chicago without Bynum though

by Funkensteinn on Dec 14, 2011 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

I didnt say they would but it's a possibility

Not having Drew throws everything off. Pau and Kobe are gonna hafta log big minutes to start off and the interior of our defense is gonna be pretty soft with just Pau and McBob protecting the rim. We are still learning a new offense and new defensive scheme and that takes time to adjust to especially with an abbreviated preseason. We have new players trying to get adjusted to new roles on a new team. All of this takes time which we dont have due to the lockout. There are more factors involved than just saying the Lakers are gonna lose because they suck.

I really don't think Barnes is gonna do much in the NBA.

He can’t score except off jumpers. I haven’t once seen him create his own shot, or make an athletic play. Just lots of pick-and-pops, open 3s, pull-ups, etc. I don’t see how he’s anything close to a superstar in the NBA. He reminds me of a taller, glorified JJ Redick. Or, for a relevant comparison, Jason Kapono. Great shooter who can’t do anything else, really.

I love Anthony Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist, though.

I think he looks better with a more open floor and a real NBA offense incorporating him in.

He might not be a big star, but he has plenty of tools to have a long career as more than an above average player.

i am not sure about dallas being 2nd seed. i think they won’t be nearly as good as last year. it was just a great run that they made. they caught a slumping lakers team. dallas won’t come out of 2nd round.

Well we all know this was meant for down the road and not now

in 3 years: Kobe will be 36 and ready to retire
Pau will be 34
Lamar would’ve been 35
Fish will be long gone

Thats the only reason we wanted these young superstars

yup. that’s why i still would not oppose a gasol trade. get the most value while you still can. after all, we did get 2 titles out of him.

to me, this hornets trade seems worse than what they were getting initially. i think they would have made playoffs with the guys they were getting. that minny pick is not even gonna be a lottery pick. i think minny has talent, and now with a great coach, should win 30 something games—at least.

Im saying he was maybe joking about Utah

I say all those teams are better than LAC except Houston and Utah. If Denver can’t resign Affalo then they go on there too for me.

SA can’t deal with a team with a big frontcourt, its their weakness so that reflected in the 1st round. They still get a top 4 seed i think.

I’m an Angel fan, and I started blogging over at Halo Heaven 2 years ago, and have had some good posts there. I have been “lurking” here as well, and reading all of your comments for the same two years, and only recently decided to pitch in—it’s hard for me to get involved with morte than one site at a time—so distracting, and I DO have a job (lol). But thanks for making it easy to join in this community.
Btw, One thing I have always liked about this site, is the large numbers of female participants and you “gals” really get involved in a big way. Halos Heaven has a few really cool ladies, but Silver and Black (Raiders!) really hasn’t had much this year in the way of female participation. In addition to talking about our beloved Lakers (I go back to the Magic era), I think that the infinite diversity on this site really makes it special.

I'm actually somewhat amused how much perspective has been lost here.

Orlando will make the deal that is best for their team. Whether that’s Bynum or Brook Lopez, they’ll decide at the deadline, and they won’t care who is on the receiving end. Besides, two other teams were perfectly happy to send a top five player back to L.A. before the league shut it down, and last I checked, the league doesn’t own the Magic. If you want to panic and overreact to every little thing, then have at it. Doesn’t do you any favors.

Panic is an overstatement and last I heard he (Howard) wanted to be in NJ anyway. I just don’t see how we are better then last year. I think all we needed was an upgrade at point and we were right there again if we kept LO. Sure we might do another big trade but chemistry take awhile to build.

by westokobe on Dec 14, 2011 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

Chemistry?

Doesn’t take a whole season to develop or even half a season maybe like 10 games. First year Pau comes to LA, mid season = NBA finals. Chemistry not an issue.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 14, 2011 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

First of all they did still make the NBA finals

second of all that wasn’t a chemistry issue, it was “we have no idea what offense to run in crunch time” and that still was an issue in the Finals. They weren’t cutting to the wrong lane, or making bad passes, they were getting steals and just chucking down the court cuz they knew someone was gonna be there sounds like chemistry bro

Because of Chemistry?

Not because we had Radmonivich in the starting lineup, or that Gasol was the C and was also getting moved around by KG. Chemistry was the reason the Lakers lost? Cool Story bro

Chemistry means you know what to run in situations cause you have played together and know what your team mate are thinking. They got blown out and it wasn’t all Rad fault or Gasol but I ain’t got time to argue over the past.

Funkenstein, Andrew makes Dwight look like a PF in that video, and that makes me smile, There’s still much uncertainty, but we don’t have a bad team, no where close to it. We have a guy that wears #24 he’s the same age another Special guy that played for the Bulls that returned to win Another Championship, Reality, we need more depth, the FO knows this. Dallas is not better – the dont have Chandler or Barea, Guaranteed without those two guys we would have taken that series or atleast took it to 7 Games. lets let things play out, we know the team has been through way tougher stretches, as Phil Jackson used to say, enjoy the journey to your goal – maybe not in these exact words.

The ongoing trade drama surrounding the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard took another strange turn Wednesday afternoon. First, the organization refuted a Yahoo! Sports report that it had stopped listening to trade offers for Howard. “That’s not where we are,” Otis Smith, the team’s President of Basketball Operations, told Josh Robbins. “What we’ve basically said is we don’t feel like we have to trade him today. We’re going to continue to look and explore opportunities. Actually, I don’t know if anything changed in my mind.”

Sounds to me like he is waiting to see if the Lakers come around

Personally, I’d ask him for Nelson. And if he says no then I guess I’d still consider the trade. I don’t want to lose both Drew and Gasol, but with the LO exception we could get a starting PG or PF. Use the vet minimum to fill out the roster for this season and see if we can win the west as is.(Kobe, Dwight, and a solid supporting cast can win imho) I may be in the minority, but thats my opinion.

Again, do I want to lose both? HELL NO! Do I think we can still contend? Hell yes! A team with Dwight and Kobe is a contender no matter what anyone thinks. There is no way you have the best center and still a top 5 player in Kobe and not be. A solid point like Mo Williams(or Nelson if Otis goes for it), Hell Carl Landry(or Paul Millsap), Metta World Peace, and an ok bench could make the Finals with the West not as loaded as it once was.
And IN THE LONG RUN do I think it’d be worth it? yes

by Q.Calloway25 on Dec 14, 2011 10:44 PM PST up reply actions

i also forgot Hedo off the bench with Barnes and McBob, Blake, Fisher, Ebanks, (Hollins/Pryzbilla), Ebanks etc.

We can have some depth and transition from older experience to youth while having a nice amount of both

by Q.Calloway25 on Dec 14, 2011 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

I would trade Pau & Bynum IF & only if...

we got Dwight, Turk & Jameer in the trade, and they take Blake and Luke’s contract.

They will need a starting PG, and Blake can do that. We will take Turk’s horrible contract if they take Luke’s. Luke is cheaper and is only for 2 years instead of 3.

Then, we use the Odom TPE to do a S&T with the Hornets for Carl Landry. Use the Sasha TPE to sign Samuel Dalembert.

PG: Jameer, Fish, Morris
SG: Kobe, Barnes, Kapono, Goudelock
SF: Metta, Turkoglu, Ebanks
PF: Landry, McBob, Thomas or Caracter
C: Howard, Dalembert

You can trade for a player who fits under the exception without sending back any salary in return; see for example the way that Dallas traded for Odom sending back only a pick and the exception. Can’t be combined with another exception, before you ask. If the exception expires, well, it’s gone. Can’t use it anymore.

If you’re wondering why we’d let it expire, it would be purely to save money. No new contract added to the books. I’m pretty sure we’ve let it happen a couple other times recently, but I can’t actually dig up examples at the moment.

Interesting that we've been looking into floor-spacing bigs like McRoberts and now Murphy.

I actually like that line of thought. It enables Kobe to be featured more in the post, provides more players who can run the pick-and-pop, which was a big part of the San Antonio offense with Duncan/Robinson, and helps fix the fact that well, we were terrible from range last year. Wouldn’t mind at all if McRoberts and Murphy are the backup bigs going into the season, maybe with a fifth big for insurance, although the team might wait on Caracter if they don’t waive him.

My current Laker thoughts…

My friend Lamar O got traded to Dallas in a very dismissive way, but I think he was his own worst enemy. When the trade for Chris Paul, which would have involved Lamar, fell through, Lamar should have kept his thoughts to himself. But Lamar is an emotional guy and couldn’t contain his hurt feelings and ability to understand that he was expendable. I’m sure Lamar is hurt, but he is on a championship team that has an owner that will pay him well if he performs. Good luck Lamar and see you in the spring.

People are curious to know how I would have felt if the NBA had vetoed my trade to LA. I would have been really upset because I paid my dues by playing years in Milwaukee. I can see how many people accuse the commissioner of having a conflict of interest as an owner of an NBA team and being the commissioner of the league. People in LA are in arms because the commissioner killed a deal that would have possibly given the Lakers a great team for years to come. I hope that the era of David Stern wearing two hats lasts for a very short time. Things need to get back to normal

First, don't misrepresent what people are saying.

No one is expecting a huge player out of this, but $8.9 million is a lot of money to take back, which is plenty of flexibility for the Lakers to utilize. Next, why would a team making $200 million/year from their new media deal make a salary dump? We’re not even a week since the trade and the TPE lasts for a long time as Hdg23 said above. Have some patience and stop spreading doom and gloom for no reason.

That's an interesting point

Considering Magic and Kobe are the ones who have 5 rings each and coincidentally were both drafted by the Lakers. I know Kobe wasnt “drafted” by us but he was with us from the start of his rookie year which is about the same imo. We may supplement them with trades but the difference is we dont have Cap Space for free agents and a trade at this point seems unlikely. Yikes

A lean, mean Kendrick Perkins totally legitimizes the Thunder-Celtics trade from last year. They are going to be absolutely brutal to play against.

(and at 32.5M over the next 4 years, Perkins is great value at the C position at around 8M/Year)

Even with Westbrook due a near-max extension next year, their max guys (KD and Westbrook) will be in the 13-17M range for the first few years.

They’ve got a good 3 year window before they even need to start worrying about luxury tax implications with this roster… scary stuff
