Hopefully NO kicks Stern to the curb as an owner and then their new owner lets us do a sign-and-trade deal for Paul.

i don't think they have a choice on who gets to be owner

I think the other 29(?) owners have to vote to accept new one.

Still they can own NO indefinitely, they are merely stewards until someone steps up. Then they are just like any normal NBA franchise

yea, that was supposed to be the plan

but they basically get to choose who becomes owner technically. Though somebody has to approach them first.

True but are they really going to turn someone away as long as he is Frank McCourt 2.0? The bad press of then owning NO is worth getting out alone.

I don't think you understand how the salary cap works.

If we have both Kobe and Dwight by the end of this year and those are the ONLY two players we have, we will only be about 13 million under the cap, if not less. And no, Kobe and Dwight will NOT be the only players on the roster.

Paul’s losing more than the 40+ million extension. He’s also losing endorsements and other things of that ilk. He can find experts/accountants to testify that he would expect ____ in endorsements if he moved to a large market and won championships.

Create leverage, settle your case. For him, that’d be a cash settlement from the league funds or possibly a salary cap exception for the lakers to sign him as a FA (just an idea, not likely).

I don't think that's true.

I’m pretty sure the trade exception counts as salary toward your whole side, i.e. you can combine the contracts of Pau, Bynum, Walton, etc. with a trade exception to match the salary coming in.

Also, we still have the Sasha exception for almost 6 million. Combine that with LO’s 9 million salary, and you have 14. What’s Hedo making again?

True

But from an organizational standpoint, if you decide to trade him, you HAVE to explore your options with all teams. There are definitely teams that would have surrendered some young players for Odom.

We may have decided to trade him for his reaction, but we did NOT make the best trade for our organization.

by Snoopy2006 on Dec 10, 2011 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

it all goes to Howard

Mitch made this trade not just to get value for Odom, but to get items that would be of value to Orl so that he would have more pieces to offer to get DH without having to gut the roster.

by Christopher Atwood on Dec 10, 2011 10:29 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

Well the TE we got for Odom

Can’t be combined with any players or other TEs in a trade to the Magic. Meaning we can’t take on Turk’s contract with the TE. So all we could do is take on Nelson (in a separate trade from Howard), which makes no sense – why would Orlando give up Dwight and Jameer?

Basically it’s hard to see how Mitch can turn the TE into a piece for Dwight.

by Snoopy2006 on Dec 10, 2011 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

It wasn’t just the TE, they also got draft picks which will hold value with a rebuilding Orl team

A Ravens fan on the wrong side of the country!!

by Christopher Atwood on Dec 10, 2011 10:39 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

Problem is

Orlando wants to dump Turk’s contract, by all accounts. We currently have no way to absorb that contract aside from including Gasol (not worth it) or including filler like Blake/Barnes/Walton (which the Magic would be crazy to take).

Draft picks are fine, but we need a way to absorb Turk’s salary because NJ definitely will

by Snoopy2006 on Dec 10, 2011 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt they really traded him for his reaction considering he was part of the original trade.

And I don’t think it’s for nothing. I believe in Mitch and the fact that there is more to what’s going on than any of us know.

even if we get Howard we get Turk who is not as good as Odom and i think older and has a longer contract worth more money. Replace Drew with Howard and we still have the same team that got swept minus LO. Im sorry i dont see the logic in that at all

Deal for CP3 is dead.

I’m guessing our priority now is trading Bynum + picks/pieces for Howard/Turk.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

but 2 1st rounders and Brook wasnt gonna get it done I didn’t think either. I dunno, how much longer is Kobes deal? I wouldnt mind clearing the cap space for a future of D12 and possibly Westbrook, Rose, Wall etc.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

For when those guys hit FA i mean.

Pau is very very good, just when there is a way to get Dwight Howard I say you do whatevers necessary. Him and Lebron, those are the only 2 i would trade whatever for.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

rose is the only one of those guys i'd really want for the future.

but we arent there yet. kobe has more years left. especially if the scoring load can be shifted to another proven player – howard and we retain our incredible PF threat.

i guess what im saying is – we shouldnt have to “trade whatever” to get howard. pau does not have to be involved to trump a nets offer that includes lopez. that would mean that smith would have to believe lopez > bynum. not even lopez believes that.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

Tell that to Nets Daily

i think thats 6 of one half a dozen situation. Lopez is very polished offensively, moreso than howard i would say… just obviously he doesnt have the physicality howard has. Now, defensively and the fact he averaged like 5.5 rebounds last season is mind-numbing… I thought Amare was a bad rebounder, but that’s more insane than when Yao averaged like 9 a game at 7’5’"

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 10:40 PM PST up reply actions

right. but you dont want to take on a pathetic defensive center if you can have someone intimidating like drew.

so long as he can keep his cool and mature (and not get injured) he has the potential to be the best big in the league in some years. you cant say the same about lopez.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

But

the injury history is a concern. I think its closer than youre giving it credit, although I too would prefer the potential of Bynum. But wasnt it after the 2009 season lopez was spoken about in as high a manner as anybody from that draft?

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 10:44 PM PST up reply actions

maybe? i dont know. lopez never really factors in much to the whole of the nba scene it seems.

probably because he’s on the nets more than anything else. but he’s not a dude who is carrying his team or anything. he has some upside, and isnt a total wash. but, again barring injuries to bynum, he has the potential to be great. i mean, i’ve never been completely sold on giving him up, even if it meant getting howard. having a true center is so rare these days. but now with phil gone, the triangle gone, and his knack of getting injured against the grizzlies, i just figure – if we’re going to do this, then do this. but i dont see pau being necessary. nor do i see mitch being willing to go to that length. giving up pau and lamar to pull chris paul, with the pieces to still potentially land howard is one thing. but if you’re giving lamar to dallas, then you have to expect they are going after howard with only drew as a main cog.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

This is smith we are talking about

so I could be dead wrong, just I don’t see how you can give up just Drew… because you guys dont have any lottery picks, and most likely wont. Then again, if Howard goes to theNets with Dwill, tha twnot be a lottery pick either, so I guess hes in a bit of a pickle.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 10:51 PM PST up reply actions

yeah. who knows at this point what mitch would be offering to the magic.

i guess my bottom line is, if smith says that its only a go if its bynum and pau? then dont do it. not worth it.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

I hear that

I’m on the other side though, I think Dwight with somebody as capable as Kobe still is, you guys can make it to the finals possibly. Pau is very good, but Dwight is such a difference maker. I wouldn’t take anybody over him, and like i said Lebron is kinda close, then after that i’d say its a few steps down to the next best player.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 11:02 PM PST up reply actions

i'd take dwight over lebron on any day.

but i can see your point about trading anything to get howard. we’d just manage our teams a little differently. i just dont think it would come to that, because i dont think smith would think he could convince mitch to give up both of them.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 11:04 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah maybe I didnt make that clear

Dwight way before Lebron and then after lebron probably 10 steps down to the next guy… Wade? I dunno, i actually think Wade along with Durant are currently 2 of the more overrated players… Just with the dominance and youth of Dwight, and all the young guys going into the 3rd years of their rookie deals, I would def roll the dice of one of them coming to the Lakers… Hell everybody wants to play in LA or NY anyway, throw in Dwight and it makes it near automatic… But if ya dont have to, then of course not, youre right on that

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

i agree about durant, he's a great scorer but needs a lot of work on the rest of his game.

wade i like, but im on the fence about. but as far as the 2 goes, he’s up there. though i’d still consider kobe the best 2 in the game. part biased and part because he’s just that bad of a dude.
yeah it’ll be interesting, assuming we are able to pull howard without losing pau, to see how things shape up in the next few years.

by tiger child on Dec 10, 2011 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

Regarding Duran

People all too often forget to acknowledge the downright ridiculous job Presti has done. That team is stacked. Harden is awesome, no way around that, westbrook is an eliet player, and I think Ibaka is the next to step forward. And Presti is just a genius, he didnt pull a Danny Ferry, or Ernie Grunfeld (I think he was the Wiz’ GM at the time) and overpay for a Jeff Green, and I think Perkins is really gonna step up for them this year over a year after the surgery now. I am picking the heat this year with a sliver of hope for my knicks, but In no way will I discount that Thunder team.

Im just curious, what do you think of the Knicks roster? I think we are close to adding Barea, and maybe (hopefully) Baron Davis. If we get Davis my confidence will skyrocket, but;

Barea/Douglas/Bibby
Shumpert/Douglas/Fields
Melo/Shawne Williams??/Fields
Amare/Jared Jeffries (sigh)
Chandler/jerome Jordan/Josh Harelson

You throw Davis in and I am very very confident.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on Dec 10, 2011 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

@KBergCBS
Previous discussions stalled when the Clippers refused to include sharpshooter Eric Gordon in the deal, and the leverage New Orleans had to hold out for a better offer is now gone — ironically, killed by the league’s refusal to approve the original deal that would’ve sent Paul to the Lakers and the subsequent collapse of the talks to revise the deal.

seriously Stern?
The Hornets had delivered a reconstructed framework of the three-team blockbuster trade that would have sent Paul to the Lakers into the NBA office for approval Saturday, but the NBA still refused to approve it.

There was a framework discussed where New Orleans would send Paul to the Lakers, and possibly two Hornets free agents – center Jason Smith and Marcus Banks – would be sent to the Lakers in sign-and-trade agreements.

The Rockets would send Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, a 2012 first-round pick and possibly young players or additional picks to the Hornets.

The Lakers would send Odom to the Hornets, Pau Gasol to the Rockets and league sources say that Los Angeles was pursuing a first-round pick to send to the Hornets.

"It’s in David Stern’s hands now," one source said Saturday. "He’ll decide on the trade."

The NBA was clearly dictating terms of the possible trade of Paul to the Lakers. The league office is running the Hornets, while it waits to sell them to an ownership group. The NBA took over the Hornets in December, buying them from George Shinn.

Can we have some perspective please?

Look, I’m as upset as everyone here is right now, but can we please tone down the entitled attitude? All the “we SHOULD have Paul” and “we SHOULD have Dwight” comments are obnoxious.

We’ve won 2(!) championships in the last 4 years! If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ve been coddled by the league more than any other team. NO other team in the league enjoys the favorable treatment we’ve gotten so many times (just think back to the Pau trade; come on, what other team in the league could pull that off?). We need to be THANKFUL for what we’ve already been blessed with, and acknowledge it may be time to rebuild. HELL, we’ll probably barely even have to rebuild. We’ll reload in no time at all.

This is dismissing the front office job of acquiring teams in a competitive manner,

the only way to have all teams be equal each year is to re-draft all teams, and hope no one gets lucky EACH year. Obviously some transactions are going to work out better than others, and it makes the teams less balanced. That’s part of the fun. Had Oden and Roy not gotten hurt, the Blazers would be a far better team than they are now. Had Kobe not recovered from his 2003~ knee injuries, the Lakers wouldn’t have won any championships. Them’s the breaks.

Stars have always left their teams, Barkley demanded a trade, Kareem left small market Bucks to go to LA, Wilt left. The hell are you talking about, some players stays others go. Completely agreed. If anything our management has been extraordinary.

At the same time, I know in the back of my mind that if we were to tank, the NBA would do what it could within the boundaries of “fairness” to make us a good team again. A significant portion of it is about money.

Yea money def plays a factor, but the Cavs were spending as much money as anyone else in the league in 07-09 and what did that get them??? Also you can use the draft and scouting, we traded Divac (a proven Center) for essentially a High School kid that became Kobe Bryant. Technically, none of us can use "we" in reference to our favorite teams.

Since we’re not technically members of the team, but I’m a hypocrite and still do.

residing in LA doesnt really mean you can be a "we" if you're a fan of another team.

i guess the last thing i’ll say on the subject, because its well old, frankly, is that if you come to a blog where loyal fans are venting and talking to each other about the confusion and frustration they have, and call them entitled, and then turn around and refer to yourself as a part of them…its just not the most welcome approach.

http://nbawarriors.wordpress.com/

by Brownie13 on Dec 10, 2011 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

My judgement

is based off calling “us” entitled. I don’t think making the best offer, and getting it vetoed because of conflicting interest by the league is right. And additionally, I don’t think that Paul should be a Laker right now because “Wahhhh, Lakers deserves to win!” I think he should be a Laker because if the team was not run by the NBA-Who have conflicting interests-then he would be a Laker. And I think we are the only team to ever have a trade like this rejected for this reason, and may be the only team to ever have this scenario happen. Does it make me entitled that I think that’s wrong?

by Aethereal on Dec 10, 2011 11:02 PM PST up reply actions

I also hope,

I haven’t been coddled too hard that I expect the same trades to go through for us that would go through for any other team, and that the Cavs owner does not determine the future of my favorite franchise.

by thetsaiguy on Dec 10, 2011 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think calling us entitled and coddled counts as objective.

It’s cool if you want to apologize, just actually do it, instead of saying how being objective can come off as rude. That’s not an apology, that’s a dismissal of criticism.

My understanding is that,

the amnesty is just for cap reasons. As in “said player’s contract” will not count towards your teams maximum salary cap. The player’s contract is still honored. He will then be put on the “amnesty market” where every team under the salary cap will be able to pick up his contract if they were to choose so. My understanding is that the team lowest under the salary cap will get first dibs, but whoever puts in the highest bid gets the player. The new team pays whatever they bid, and the old team pays the rest. Money is still being paid, it’s just it doesn’t count against the salary cap.

This is such a surreal event

The commissioner of a league vetoed a good trade that was made by the management of a team that was believed to be autonomous and acting in good faith to every single member of management in the league and league officials. Stern is such a fucking idiot, he did what Donaghy did but ramped that up 10000 times worse for the league.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 11:41 PM PST up reply actions

I dont understand how the Odom trade helps in getting Dwight

The trade exception doesnt allow us to get Hedo, and if we wanted picks to send to Orlando, we could have gotten an infinitely better deal from most other teams.

Seriously, Chris Paul should just state publicly that he will refuse to play another game as a Hornet

It will force Stern’s hand on the trade, and I don’t think it will make Paul look bad or lower his value, since Stern has done something no commissioner in any major American sports has done.

Paul would still get paid during his mini-strike (see: Marbury)

This is nuts.

When I first heard about this trade I was not at all happy about moving Odom and Gasol for Paul. But now that Stern denied the trade for BR I am furious. “The Lakers are getting screwed!” I keep telling myself. But in reality, I think they just saved themselves from a very questionable trade, and have put themselves in a great position to make a better move to get Howard.

They charged me 15 dollars. That's how much it costs to only have 20 dollars.

I think our pursuit of Howard is a smokescreen

I think Mitch is still on the lookout for a PG, just not CP3 at the moment. Could be Baron, who has not been amnestied yet I believe- Cavs might be trying to trade him.

Other possibilities- cap space for Billups, trade for Jameer Nelson.

Trade exceptions are hard to explain, but Lakers can obtain a player from another team w/o trading anything if he makes $8.9 mill or less.

and

Lakers have $5.2 mill exception from Sasha trade but can’t combine.

Because there seems to be a lot of confusion about trade exceptions...

This is my first time commenting, but there’s been so much misinformation and confusion here I felt I should step in and help.

The ONLY thing a trade exception can be used for is to match a SINGLE player whose salary is less than or equal to the exception. For example, the Mavs used their trade exception from the Chandler deal to absorb Odom without sending anything back. So we can use that exception for any player making up to $8.9 million without sending back anything besides the exception and picks. Anyone making over that, we cannot use the exception for. The exception CANNOT be packaged with a smaller-salary player to make up the difference for a larger-salary player. It CAN be included in a trade with other players involved, or even with another trade exception (although they can’t be combined), I think. So we could use one trade exception for a player making under 8.9 mil, and another for a player making under ~5 mil, but we can’t combine them for a player making 13 mil. We can’t add the 5 mil exception to a player making 5 mil to take back a 10 mil a year player, only a 5 and another 5. Hope this clears things up.

I think we already have a trade lined up for someone involving the $8.9 million exception, as was reported after the CP3 deal, and that’s why we still went through with moving Odom for the exception. Gotta believe that Mitch is positioning the Lakers to pick up Dwight, but right now I don’t see how it gets done without doing something like Bynum/Gasol for Jameer/Hedo/Dwight. Bynum alone doesn’t strike me as enough ammo, nor would it make sense to drop out of the Hornets trade unless Gasol is still on the move.

btw, doing this trade, do we still need to include lamar's tpe?

After running it through the trade machine, don't think so

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7g6tjhz

I think that Mitch has a handshake deal in place for someone else (no clue who) who fits in the $8.9M exception. Likely set up prior to the Hornets trade, since it would have left us seriously shorthanded otherwise. Once he decided to pull out of that, he moved Lamar anyway so he could pull off that trade. That’s the only explanation I can come up with that makes any sense, at least.

by TheWerg on Dec 10, 2011 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

So we can get Jameer with just Pau/Bynum

That means Mitch probably has a PF in mind. Anyone believe it’s Scola?

by Q.Calloway25 on Dec 10, 2011 11:53 PM PST up reply actions

Scola would fit, but

I don’t see any reason the Rockets would give him up for nothing. If you’re looking for likely candidates, I’d say try to figure out guys making $8.9M or less, probably signed to long-term deals, who haven’t necessarily been performing up to their contract, or else are on a team that’s looking to rebuild and thus shed salary/add picks.

by TheWerg on Dec 10, 2011 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

They need to shed salary

Thats why they were giving up so much for Pau. They want Nene.

by Q.Calloway25 on Dec 10, 2011 11:59 PM PST up reply actions

Valid point

But I don’t think they really want to ink Nene without Pau in tow as well. Adding Nene to that roster and taking out Scola doesn’t leave them in a much different position than they already have, except with more money committed to a player who’s not at all proven capable of being the number 1 guy on a truly contending team.

by TheWerg on Dec 11, 2011 12:06 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly what I'm thinking

Only guys I can come up who would fit the PG/PF need the Lakers need are Scola, Jameer Nelson, Paul Millsap, Charlie Villanueva, Michael Beasley, and Darko.

After digging through rosters a bit, I've come up with a couple possibilities

Anderson Varejao: Personally hate this guy, but he fits in the exception, and the Cavs are in full rebuild mode. Would add some front-court depth.
Charlie Villanueva: Fits in the exception, clearly Detroit wants to part ways at this point. Might just amnesty him, though.
Drew Gooden: See Charlie V., pretty much.
Marvin Williams: Don’t like the fit so much for us but could probably be had.
Tyrus Thomas: The most exciting name so far, Bobcats always seem to be looking to give away players to shed salary.
Andray Blatche: Blechhh.
Michael Beasley: Sorta like Tyrus Thomas, with more baggage.

That’s just with a cursory scan through league rosters, but it’s these sorts of guys we would need the exception for, and could feasibly get with it. Remember the team sending him out is looking just for cap relief and maybe a pick.

Varejao would be fine

same with Tyrus Thomas, but no to the rest

Look at the source.

It’s from another GM. I seriously doubt Mitch called up GM’s and was like “We want to trade Lamar so we can go after Dwight.” Not a huge selling point for other teams.

ok

woj says it on his article

In his desire to keep the All-Star point guard on the roster to maximize the league’s selling price of the team to potential owners, Stern has shot down two deals to send Paul to the Lakers. Now, teams are leery of entering into trade talks for Paul with the Hornets basketball executives, and this could collectively cripple the franchise’s ability to get maximum value for Paul.

"Hate me or love me. Its one or the other; always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fadeaway, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons." - Kobe Jelly Bean Bryant
