Here We Go Again...

Via Twitter, ESPN's Marc Stein and Chris Broussard are reporting that another trade proposal for Chris Paul has been submitted to the NBA offices.

Chris Broussard:

@ESPNSteinLine & myself have been told by sources that new CP trade btwn LAL, NO & Hou has been submitted to NBA office for approval

I know the source isn't always the best, but Broussard has been remarkably on top of this story. This kinda matters to his bosses. I think it goes through this time. Dwight, next. We'll keep you updated. Be sure to follow both writers on Twitter as well: @Chris_Broussard and @ESPNSteinLine. Comment away....

Hopefully Okafor comes back.

Then we can send him to the Rockets and maybe they’ll help facilitate a trade for Dwight :) The Rockets have just been so kind to us, we need to repay them somehow! :P

Celtics, Hornets still working to finalize David West sign and trade deal, league sources say. Three year, $27M-29M deal in the works.

Meh, there goes that possibility. Probably wasn’t realistic now that we likely aren’t getting a big TPE back.

has the right attitude about the whole thing, IMO. He is getting paid no matter where he is playing ball at. I think Houston has some good players around him as well. They could sneak into the playoffs with all the young legs that they have. ….hmmm maybe not:
PG Lowry, Flynn
SG Lee, Williams
SF Budinger, Patterson, Parsons
PF Gasol, Morris, Hill
C Dalembert, Thabeet

They have some pieces but….think they need some of their young guys to mature a bit before they make any noise in the playoffs.

I’m pretty certain if you get Okafor, you probably won’t get Howard, as the math won’t add up. You guys think I’m an idiot, or what would you say about that?

by Barragan on Dec 10, 2011 10:29 AM PST reply actions

My perspective is that at the end of the day, salary cap room still matters - I cite both New York and Miami.

With Okafor, Paul, Kobe, your bench scrubs ( Fisher, Artest, Walton, and Blake), you’ll easily be over it, and getting to the appropriate spending level is crucial. Howard won’t play with you guys for the MLE.

Not meaning to troll, just getting some perspective.

It was never a possibility that we would sign Dwight in free agency.

Since we’re over the cap by like $30 million. Was always a trade scenario.

But frankly, yes I know it’s LA, glamour and stuff, but given what a disaster our attempt to get Bosh was in 2010 was ( and we tried it the exact same way that it looks like you’re trying to get Howard), I don’t think that plan is going to work.

Why would they want Okafor and Bynum?

Seems pretty redundant. I think it would make sense (if they can’t get Howard) if they package Bynum + Odom, get back Okafor with Paul and keep Gasol.

2002 Playoffs were sooo rigged

Game by game breakdown of the freethrows
Game 1: 22-17 Lakers
Game 2: 25-38 Kings
Game 3: 15-35 Kings
Game 4: 27-26 Lakers
Game 5: 23-33 Kings
Game 6: 40-25 Lakers
Game 7: 33-30 Lakers
Tally: 185-204 Kings. Damn, those lucky ass Lakers. Please feel free to add in that that’s with the Lakers having Shaq, who was often intentionally fouled. Please, do leave. I know people enjoy finding reasons why their teams fail and others’ succeed, but you don’t have any factual basis behind what you’re saying.

by nitotech on Dec 10, 2011 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

Dumb logic.

Aren’t stats the results of the game that was played? It’s all there in the stats. If you were to watch the game again you would see 185 free throws for the Lakers and 204 free throws for the Kings. The hell?

Affectionately,
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,
NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer

by afrikabamboodle on Dec 10, 2011 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

Let's play this game,

despite the fact Afrika already explained why that logic’s faulty. I’d see game 2, in which the Kings got 35 free throws, and Kobe and Shaq-two premier players in the league-shot 8. 2 for Kobe. Both of whom took over 20 shots.

Totally willing to accept that Lakers got lucky calls in game 6. But other than that game, the Lakers didn’t have any kind of significant edge in free throws, despite having two premier players who have always drawn a large amount of fouls. I’m not willing to accept that the Lakers win that series because of being babied by the referees when through the first 5 games the other team had 37 more free throws. I’m not willing to accept that the game is somehow rigged at all. The underlying problem here isn’t that the “Lakers are babied” it’s that home teams are given more foul calls than other teams. It’s a referee issue, not a league or team issue.

by Aethereal on Dec 10, 2011 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

You are probably gone but..

Just some stats for ya…The Lakers were 5th in the league in Foul differential last year. So 4 other teams had it more “babied” then the Lakers.
Maybe they got more FTs then any other team? Nope they came in 17th in Fts taken.

I don’t know…I think this is a “star’s league”. The stars definately get the calls over the regular Joes. But that is nothing new in the league. And lately there have been quite a few teams other then the Lakers that have been getting those same calls. Maybe its a myth that the Lakers are being “babied” by the league.

by Dukeston1 on Dec 10, 2011 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

I can tell you what he will say.

When other teams “get away with fouls”, it is because they didn’t really foul. When the Lakers get away with fouls, it is because the officials baby them.

you do realize that any team pounding it in the paint over and over

by Vmuse on Dec 10, 2011 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

I agree completely..

and a team up at the end of the game by less then 10 get fouled repeatedly as well. So a team winning alot of games hypothetically would get the advantage here as well.
There are a number of reasons why the Lakers would get more fouls then the opposing team.

by Dukeston1 on Dec 10, 2011 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

You can gripe about the calls (I liked the Kings but still was cheering for my Lakers back then)

There's no problem in saying you see babying. BUT...

The Lakers have one of the highest payrolls yet give money back in luxury tax and still made a profit. The brand value and history of dominance is not simply a result of being babied. They obtain and use their pieces to make a play for more great players and perpetuate the legacy. Conspiracy theorists can’t explain that all away. Who wants to help the Lakers (other than great players who want to play for them)? No one. Our owner and FO is the shit..pure and simple.

Broussard was saying this morning that ORL waned Bynum AND Pau.

If that’s true, then I’d rather throw Bynum at Houston and Odom to NO and keep Pau to play alongside Okafor.

CP3
Kobe
Metta
Pau
Okafor

I’d ride into battle with that 5 any game. Okafor gives us as many points and boards as Bynum, and is physically more durable. Pau’s skill set is almost irreplaceable on offense.

I’d MUCH rather have CP3-Pau-Okafor than CP3-D12-gaping hole at PF.

Orlando's next best offer is Brook Lopez and two crap picks. Asking for Bynum/Gasol is just step one in negotiating.

Lopez isn’t a guy you can even build around, because he’s a volume scorer in the post, and not an efficient one, at that.

Agreed it's jsut a negotiating level. But I'd rather send them Bynum and Odom than lose Gasol entirely.

Gasol can play off either D12 or Okafor if needed. And he’s an outstanding 2-man game with Kobe, and could play pick and roll with CP3 no problem.

HATE the idea of losing Pau. He’s an instant, unconventional matchup problem for opponents.

Despite the absurdness of Gilbert's letter

I think he nailed the problem the league had with the deal, which was all of the cap space opened up. If we dont get Howard, Okafor will be a huge help, but it also makes getting Dwight much harder.

Why? Our offer after the original deal and after this one would have been Bynum and pieces. That hasn't changed.

We would try to get him in FA. Kind of stupid, but I dont see how it affects the trade scenario. It is the only way I see the new deal making any difference.

We definitely wouldn't have opened up enough cap space. We're $30 million over the cap and would have to get $15 million below the cap to have a shot at signing Howard straight-up.

don’t kill me, but I’m thinking that the change in the trade might be Bynum instead of Okafor. Note that Woj’s tweet didn’t include Odom in the list of guys who are still confirmed to be switching teams.

This way, you guys still have a power forward instead of two guys who are strictly centers. It also qualifies as more “young talent” for NO. I’m saying all of this as objectively as possible… will be interesting to see what happens.

I feel like the Hornets’ end of the deal got worse, and the Lakers’ got better. I’m okay with that, but what was the big issue before? We’d have been losing payroll because we gave up good players. I’m more and more confused by what the hell the league was thinking.

I feel like Mitch knows that the league has to accept the new trade because of the position that they put themselves in. I like this deal much better than the first one.

If this trade goes down.

At the end of the day, we’re giving a lot for a guy based on a 6 game sample. His regular season #s were his worst in 4 years. Plus, he needs the ball. How is that going to mesh with Kobe? That’s one guy you cannot afford to piss off or you’re gonna lose the locker room.

The triangle is gone so a catch and shoot pg isnt needed

We need a more traditional PG to run the offense and adding Paul frees up Kobe to play off the ball more plus Paul can create shots for everybody else including himself which in turn makes the entire team better on the offensive end

But gotta see how the Dwight deal works out first. If anything Emeka could be flipped for assets to trade for Dwight since they wouldn’t want 2 centers. Or we could just hold onto him for depth.

If I wasn’t an LA fan and was filled with Conspiracy theories, this is what I would be bitching about….. but because Stern ultimately nullified the first trade, everyone, including my(drunk)self, didn’t see the bigger picture… He did let talks resume, so…… yea…..

Chandler in NY

Chandler is a good C, don’t get me wrong…but he has had a terrible time trying to stay healthy in his 10 seasons in the NBA. He has seasons of 35, 45, 51 games played and has never played a full 82 game season. He also seems to turn the ball over alot despite not being asked to score a whole lot. Now he’s gonna have Toney Douglas as his PG to give him some easy buckets? Not sure if that is such a good fit. I think it will be worth it to keep Amare from having to guard the opposing center but losing Billups brings that team back to last season’s level. Just good enough to lose to the upper level teams, IMO.

should have given the Lakers enough time to actually read the playbook. And for Kobe, being such a student of the game, I’m sure it didn’t take much studying to get all the concepts. Ball is Ball….only 10 people on the court at all times and not that much room to move and cut to. Kobe will make a good coach someday, if he decides to do it.

12 guys with his relentless pursuit of perfection.

I think Kobe’s mentality is a lot like Jordan, in that he wants to win more than anything, and will do everything within his power to get the win. If a team had 12 players like that, I think Kobe wouldn’t have a problem coaching them.

I agree with this,

I could see Kobe being a good personal coach for a player somewhere down the line, with a similar attitude to his. But a full team? I doubt there’s a team that will ever get assembled that Kobe wouldn’t be too hard on as a coach.

That's not happening, we don't trade 3 players for 1 player

If we trade Bynum its because we know Orlando will take Odom and Okafor or something to that extent. NO isn’t getting Bynum and Odom.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 1:08 PM PST up reply actions

Cuban is probably

behind this since he’s one of the teams allowed to speak with Dwight and a vocal opponent of the deal.
Probably figures to sour the CP3 deal and all will be well.

by An_droid7 on Dec 10, 2011 1:12 PM PST up reply actions

If NO demands both Bynum and LO, then Mitch would stop right there

He has alot more influence over the deal than Cuban does. Dallas is a far 3rd in the D12 sweepstakes, they have no pieces to offer Orl, they’d basically trade D12 for nothing if they do a Dallas deal.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

Sigh

Younger pieces were required yesterday. Then it comes out Dallas wants a crack at Dwight. Now there are rumors that Bynum should be thrown in as well.
My logic, failed as it may be, is that in order to prevent “any” deal being made with NO, and the above-mentioned Cuban issues, are that the league ownership, minus the 3 teams involved now are trying to prevent a CP3 AND Dwight deal to the Lakers by requesting ridiculous demands.

Bosh was arguably the best player during the finals

Their not gonna automatically play Dallas again, they still have to play the revamped Knicks and a whole season to get their game on point this time. The Celtics are still force, who knows what happens if Rondo doesn’t get hurt in that series. The Bulls gained a year of experience, and just experienced a loss of a series that they probably win if they hit some 3’s. O’neal may be a bit of an upgrade over Howard, but J. Howard barely played anyway and was a non factor and O’neal isn’t playing 25+ min a game.

Hard to say

Bulls arguably overachieved last year, and against the Heat in the playoffs D-Rose wasn’t even the 2nd best player on the court at times.

Heat have upgraded too with their acquisitions of All-Pro benchwarmer Curry and Battier. Even with Lebron’s collapse, the Heat were two games away from winning the whole damn thing. What happen’s this year after a year of playing together?

He has to go through all the teams that have a lower payroll than Miami. I heard that Phily had already put in a waiver for him.

Just a big circle

Miami had to gut their team completely to be able to afford Lebron. They had to get under the cap to be able to sign and trade for Lebron. How would the Lakers be able to do that with 30 million over the cap as it is?

We have to dump Gasol and Odom or some other combo

We don’t have the money if they are on the team and NO does not want Gasol thats why Houston is involved in this trade. Your assuming that their gonna want a trade a year from now, which would be unlikely, that doesn’t happen. Also sign and trades are generally done for players to get more money, were trying to get D12 as well so that doesn’t work

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

lol we’re not getting D12 and CP3. If we trade for CP3 we can kiss Dwight goodbye

by robi s on Dec 10, 2011 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

Uhhh ok whats your reasoning

Dallas has no pieces to offer, NJ might have tampered with Dwight and have thrown almost 20 million to Nene and are ongoing talks with crawford. No way Orl would want Nene in a year 1 of that contract.

Bynum and pieces or even Bynum himself is better then the nothing they get from Dallas or Brook Lopez from NJ

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

show me how it would work on the Trade machine and i’ll take your word for it.

by robi s on Dec 10, 2011 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

You can't unless we deal Gasol and Odom

We need that cap space and we’d use the trade exemptions we have to absorb the contract. But you can break it down.

Ok, Gasol and Odom combined make around 27 million, CP3 current contract is set to make 16 mill this year. We have around 11 million extra, but lets say its just 10. Hedo is making 10 million this year, and we have the 5 mill trade exemption from the Machine. Howard is set to make about 4 million more than Bynum and there goes the trade exemption.

We have even more cash if Luke retires and we amnesty Blake (9million)

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know the exact details and it's hard to show before the CP deal goes through.

But I know the original plan was to take on Hedo’s contract. Things might have changed though.

Bamboozled.

by PoPs_737 on Dec 10, 2011 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

All the teams involved would take Turks contract

So that’s not an issue. Its the players involved, but the fact is as soon as that tampering issue came up, NJ started talking to Nene and other free agents. Theres some truth to that rumor, as NJ has backed off a bit. LA is just as much of an option as before. Bynum, young players, picks. NJ has Lopez…….. and thats it.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

lol try it out in the trade machine…..

we would have to give up Blake, Ron, and convince them to take Luke Walton.

Leaving our bench with only Character, Ebanks/Barnes, Fisher and the rookies….

by robi s on Dec 10, 2011 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Orl doesn't make nor want that

They don’t want those contracts, too expensive.

They would prefer Bynum and picks or Ebanks/Caracter. For Orl is more about shedding cap and getting someone for D12 to possibly fill the void. Their not looking for a bunch of players like NO (nor have they been offered that)

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

lol to get Dwight? why not? it’s not like any of them are winning you a championship

by robi s on Dec 10, 2011 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

Because they'd gut their whole team

And only have D12 and Dwill on a team with nobody, and D12 wants to play in a large market AND contend now, not in the future. To contend in the future he might as well stay in Orlando and wait two years, which what he would have to do for NJ to rebuild that team.

by Fin Fan Forever on Dec 10, 2011 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

lol this same nets team that had a losing streak of how long? It’s not like their core was even close to the playoffs let alone championship to begin with. Sasha Vujacic was playing big minutes for them….

Big Shot is a long shot

If Billups gets the amnesty kick, the teams under the cap get first shot…I believe. Also a team can only use the amnesty once in this CBA contract period (meaning we might not want to use it on Metta as someone above suggested).

So what's the latest exactly?

Took me 15 minutes to read through all these comments (you guys are good). Just sooooo many updates.

I just know that if they want Bynum the deal should be off.

Don't know...

There have been reports of yes and of no, the no version had Ebanks and Character going instead

SHAKEDOWN

Nobody has really explicitly pointed this out yet, but doesn’t it seem fairly evident now? It’s an old school shakedown, featuring D Stern in a ski mask, circling the parking lot in the old white Ford Econoline van until the CBA gets ratified by the players, then skidding to a stop and popping out and saying “stick em up, Mitch.” Stern knows the atmospheres of all three teams involved in the Paul trade fiasco have been poisoned, and now he can shake em down for a better deal. BTW, thank the sports Gods for SSR. Only thing keeping me sane right at the moment.

After reading all the practice updates

I’m starting to really like Mike Brown.

And Luke please retire. If you don’t, you’d better win MVP this year.

From Berger:

There were no indications that Andrew Bynum would be included in the new iteration of the trade, or that Emeka Okafor and the $41 million left on his contract would be going to the Lakers. While that substantial adjustment to the original deal terms might satisfy the league’s objective to have Paul replaced in New Orleans by a combination of young talent and better financial books, it would also run counter to the Lakers’ goal of trying to acquire Paul as a table-setter for a run at 2012 free agent center Dwight Howard.

While some observers were confused as to why the Lakers wouldn’t seriously engage the Magic in trade discussions that would send Bynum and Gasol to Orlando for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu’s poisonous contract, sources said the answer was simple: the Lakers want to try to position themselves to land both Paul and Howard, who sources say is unequivocal that the Lakers are his first choice.

Now appears Lakers will keep Devin Ebanks, and that additional young talent to New Orleans will be coming from the Rockets, sources confirm.

I don't think the D12 trade will be done that quickly

The CP3 one is still in the workings

Well they could finish negotiating the trade by today, and then start D12 tomorrow

Maybe Monday night, the fact that camps have started up plays into the speed as well as teams want to have as much time with the team their going to actually play with.

Dwight's already said before, he would like to play along side Kobe...

….having CP3 in the mix just sweetens that pot for Dwight…. Magic, hopefully, aren’t stupid enough to let him walk and get nothing in return….. So to the Lakers he shall go, and in a frenzy WE shall go… lol
