Why?

He made valid points. I don’t think that’s an aspect that can be overlooked.

What's valid about his point when Kobe has been saying all along that he wants to play?

Even Kevin Ding pointed out last week that Kobe wants to play, anywhere, any time, during this lockout. I’d be more inclined to listen to KD, saying the same thing Kobe’s been saying, than GD calling Kobe a liar.

I don't necessarily agree with Doyel.

Just that the injury aspect is something to be looked at. I have more to say, but want to write about it today.

Might also have to do with the fact that Doyel is a condescending asswipe

And a terrible writer.

Except its only 10 games, I don't think it's that serious

to play 10 games overseas. Not like he’s signing yearlong contracts or whatever

exactly

this is nothing compared to the normal wear and tear of an NBA season + playoffs.

No one should be losing sleep over this.

Well, at least we know Kobe is going all-out in treating his knee

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/22557/kobe-bryant-gene-therapy-knee-wehling

Being treated by the same doctor who provided care to the pope is pretty cool. Any BIO/MOL/CHEM majors or doctors out there care to vet the copious list of scientific articles listed in the post?

I don't really have the time or patience to read through many of those papers, but I skimmed some of the more relevant sounding ones.

The idea is pretty simple, but it seems to me there would be a lot of complications when trying to actually make it work. He’s basically just artificially supercharging the body’s healing mechanisms by isolating and concentrating the important proteins to levels way higher than would ever be found otherwise.

The gene therapy stuff mixed in there is super interesting, but has nothing to do with Kobe’s treatment.

Interesting. Thanks a bunch.

It's not very complicated, this procedure can be done by anyone with a syringe and a centrifuge.

kamentezkys’link brings up the big criticism, which is – “does this work better than just your body naturally healing itself?”

…scientists treated people suffering from refractory tennis elbow with either P.R.P. or injections of whole blood…But the whole blood turned out to be as effective as P.R.P. at treating tennis elbow after three months, and more so at six months

Personally I think it’s barely a step up from a placebo. There is a reason why most insurance won’t cover it. I can see why a lot of doctors would hype it up though, It’s cheap and quick for them to do plus they can charge a lot for it. It can’t harm him though, unless he is going to have it done regularly, which would really mess with his bodies protein production mechanisms.

Maybe I'll just fade into Bolivian

Honestly though it makes me think he's very concerned about the knee and was probably on the cusp of getting another surgery.

at this point though the orthopedist probably said another surgery wouldn’t fix much.

I think you may have missed something in the linked article.

The whole point was that Kobe’s procedure was NOT a simple platelet isolation and injection.

by LAMojo on Oct 4, 2011 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions

The general concept is the same, but the work being done is in a whole different league.

Platelets can be isolated with nothing but a centrifuge, like you said. They’re just cell fragments. Determining the best methods for producing and isolating the actual proteins and factors involved in the complicated mechanisms that initiate and regulate tissue repair is way, way, way harder. That’s cutting edge stuff. Check out the papers linked on the guy’s website.

You’re right, there’s no guarantee it will work. Every treatment was experimental at some point though.
