The definitive answer to the Lakers title total debate. (I mean, according to me)

(As an interesting side note, I've had this debate on another team's forum and actually got a warning because of it. For making too much sense I'm assuming.)

Right in to it after the jump....

Cities don’t win championships. Cities aren’t awarded trophies.

FRANCHISES win championships.

The Lakers have won 16 championships. Regardless of whether it was done in Minn or LA, the championships go with the FRANCHISE. Anyone with half a brain knows this and to argue it makes you look like more of an ass and less an informed fan.

If the Celtics left the city tomorrow and became the Des Moines Celtics, do they leave their 17 titles to the city? So when Boston gets a new franchise (I was trying to think of what they’d call themselves and the best I could come up with was the Boston Turds. Seriously though, give me time, I’m pretty clever) do THEY become the 17 time champions? The 17 time NBA champion Boston Turds? And the Des Moines Celtics just start over?

PUH-LEEZE. Of course not.

The owners, their franchise and it’s players, not the city and it’s fans are the true “owners” of the titles. It’s always comical when Celtics fans argue the point. It's always fun when a fanbase makes themselves far more important and relevant to a franchise than they actually are. Give the city of Seattle a call. They'll tell you all about it.

And as far as “honoring” the Minneapolis contributions to our title total, if anything I think the Los Angeles Lakers have done it right. We’ve got a banner noting the 5 titles and I think every Laker fan knows the contributions made by Mikan and Clyde but the reality is that was another city and another time. I think if we overcelebrated those titles it would look phony. Those titles were won by the Laker franchise in Minn. and that’s that. I think the Celtics fans find fault in that because everything about their franchise revolves around ancient history. Whether they’re still celebrating Cousy, Red or Bill or fondly looking back on Larry legend, it is what it is. HISTORY.

You know, history. That thing that you hang on to when you’ve got nothing in the present? I liken the Celtics fans to the ex “King of the school” but now chubby, balding guy at your 20 year high school reunion who can’t stop talking about how cool he was in school and all the tail he used to get but now is working at the Radio Shack and still living in his parent’s basement……… err…….. I mean, swanky bachelor pad. Just creepy and irrelevant.

Anyhoo…….. Bear in mind, this was a franchise that up until 2008 was literally an afterthought as a championship contender in this league. They were virtually irrelevant for 20 YEARS. Two decades of holding on for dear life to old ghosts that could keep them from feeling no different than the dregs of the league who had no history. Is it any wonder why a fanbase like that can't understand when another fanbase doesn't live and die by ancient history?

So let them make the argument. Seriously. It’s comical at best and pathetic at worst. When we tie them we’ll be celebrated and when we pass them ESPN will talk all about it and I’ll warm myself with the sweet glow of victory and the cancerous microwaves eminating from my television.

And they’ll have plenty of memories of that one title they bought in 2008 and how they can match it to the old, dirty black and white photos of players in too short shorts and an all white fanbase celebrating titles back when HARRY FREAKIN’ TRUMAN was President!

Boston Turds indeed.
