Dear Mr Bynum,

Hello my name is Sarge and I am a very big fan of yours and would like to ask some questions from me and my SSR family.

When the fuck are your body parts ever gonna heal at an exponential rate that is higher than that of an old man?
When will you be able to jump agian and do the SSR favorite “BYNUM SMASH!!” with a regular ease?
Will you only miss preaseason please so you can mek the All-Star team and satisfy some of your VERY humble fans here at SSR?
We would love all of these things from you Andrew….please?

P.S. When you read this do not squash me like a bug, save the anger for the playoffs and stop smiling so much.

Thanks alot, Sarge

It's true though

A lot of professional athletes live paycheck to paycheck. Some of those guys simply don’t know how to manage money.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Sep 23, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

True.

Then again, sometimes it has to be taught. Not everyone is born with a good sense of money. Most players come from poor backgrounds in which their families struggle to survive as it is. There is not “managing” money, because they have to rob Peter to pay Paul. So, often, it’s a case of see money (a lot), spend money (a lot), because it seems endless and I’m sure they get the feeling that they’ll save eventually. Until they realize their careers over, and that money can never be made again. Antoine anybody?

by wondahbap on Sep 23, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Antoine Walker.

He is the example of poor money management that everybody seems to use. Ugh.

It’s such a waste and a shame. I hesitate to call it sad as I’m not sure I feel sorry for him or others who use and abuse the wealth they have/had, so “waste” and “shame” are all I can come up with.

by BigSkyCat on Sep 23, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not always bad money management, sometimes it's bad money managers. Scottie Pippen is a good example of that.

can you believe he was the Player's Union President at the time?

The players are entitled to their share since the NBA markets the players in a manner that makes them more partners than the other major sports, but that doesn’t need to be said. it was straight up dumb. I can’t see Fish making that mistake.

I know some fans wanted him to have surgery during the OKC series based on Brandon Roy’s recovery. But I hope they now realize the best athletes recovers 17 times faster than Bynum.

And.... back to Kelly Dwyer

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/The-NBA-A-through-Z-Los-Angeles-Lakers?urn=nba-271884#remaining-content

It’s hard to make it through reading this. There’s very, very few compliments in the opening paragraphs. He’s just bagging on the Lakers, it seems. And moreso, bagging on Kobe. Its kinda lame. I’m going to read through it, but calling the Lakers “overachievers” is just plain weird. I just don’t agree with him; and it comes off kinda offensive when you consider Kobe’s body of work juxtaposed with Dwyers nonchalance of calling him simply an “aging superstar” and being an “overachiever.”

Its just… weird.

by Jevon O on Sep 23, 2010 10:52 AM PDT reply actions

I mean. Seriously.

He bashed Kobe Several, I Repeat, Several, times in the article. His compliments were for Kobe when he passed the ball, and the LAST sentence where he gives ONE nice sentence about what the aging superstar does well. C’mon son.

Um, were we reading the same thing?

I thought he was praising the Lakers, and Kobe too.

It’s nice to have an empire that isn’t evil. As annoying as the Derek Fisher fawning can be, as frustrating as the “Kobe missed seven of nine shots in the final period, but when the game mattered, the NBA’s best clutch player [sic] delivered” nonsense is, this is still a team worth appreciating to no end. Kobe’s competitive instincts, his on-court brilliance, his all-around game. Pau Gasol’s(notes) unending array of gifts. That one time a week where Lamar Odom(notes) looks like the best player to ever play this game. That three-week stretch where Andrew Bynum(notes) is the best center in basketball. Ron freaking Artest. Phil Jackson, and that sideline triangle.

They’re just a monster. Basketball at its best. And I wish they were playing tonight.

All the rest was slights and slights and slights. Its a tad annoying. The end is nice, I will admit. He doesn’t have to fawn over the team, but the jabs…. they come off awkward.

Its because of the tone of the entire article

the tone that he gives of of knowing more than his readers that it can come off as backhanded no matter what he says. If we’re talking about good things about the NBA, why are we talking about how much a fanbase or the media talk about Kobe or fisher? Why aren’t we spending more than a paragraph on the offense or talking about Phil Jackson and why isn’t Jerry Buss not once mentioned in the entire article? Which is saying something considering LV and the Heat are mentioned much more than once. He might as well have just picked LV and fawned over him some more because picking the Lakers and not mentioning the history or Buss or Kupchak and West or Phil in more than just a sideways glance misses out of the fact that the Lakers are an organization and a basketball team. Talk about how they put it together, talk about how they’ve added depth, but somehow are still shallow according to Dwyer. These are the things he should’ve spent time on instead of talking about Kobe forcing 20 footers or Kobe not being clutch and yet backtracking to say he has on-court brilliance and an all-around game. Saying we’re the best team in the league, but mentioning how excited you are for the Heat to possibly win 75 games in the exact same article does not seem like your writing is reflecting your thinking.

This didn’t feel like a genuine article except for when he talks about the offense. You know how when a feeling is supposed to be translated in writing and everyone misjudges it. Yeah, I think he definitely tried to get a feeling of appreciation across for the Lakers, but he barely talked about the actually Lakers and talked more about the Yankees, the Heat, the media perceptions, and the players. The players are the only actual part of the organization he spends time on. There’s no history there as with other players mentioned in the other pieces in this series. It just doesn’t seem like he wanted to write it and whatever feeling about the Lakers we were supposed to walk away from this article with, I think he did a poor job reflecting it in his writing.
