Lakers to Open Season at Home Against Rockets

So reports Lisa Dillman of the L.A. Times. The three main storylines, of course, will the presentation of the Lakers' championship rings, the hanging of a new banner and the possible return of Yao Ming. My great hope, however, will be that Devin Ebanks sees some PT, prompting the announcers to compare him to Trevor Ariza a conservatively estimated 3 billion times.

The opening week, Christmas Day and Martin Luther King Day schedules will be released later today.

it’s just marquee games today… home vs. rockets isn’t a bad start to the season though.

Shannon Brown dunk over Yao ?

Could that happen? How about another Kobe jam on the Yao? Good to see him back, and this is a nice team to kick off the season against.

Fish IS an A player.

He’s so A, that he knows this is the first day of class, and doesn’t even need to show up.

Brooks, on the other hand, is the C student that plays his best hand early in the season, only to fizzle out come finals.

Yao is the missing piece for them. Well that, and the development of Jordan Hill into an all-star caliber player. If they get that, plus keep the rest of the roster intact (or get better), Houston is easily #2 in the Western Conference. If anything, all anyone has to do is see that the players in Houston are dedicated to the system. This isn’t Denver or Phoenix, folks.

Kobe would never play for the Celtics because he had a rivalry with them, it’s not like Shaq that when Shaq played the Celtics were sucking.

Lebron has the ball, dribbles down the court splitting the lakers defenders with 5 seconds left on the clock with the game on the line in the 2011 nba finals game 7! Lebron pulls up from deep, in kobes face and drains the three pointer! HEAT WIN HEAT WIN!!! 89-88!!!!! Difference is that Shaq never really participated in the rivalry

Because Boston was garbage for the duration of his tenure with the Lakers. He’s not beholden to the Lakers for anything by joining Boston.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Aug 4, 2010 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Shaq played against the Celtics as a Laker right?

Then he was a part of the rivalry. End of story. So the Lakers-Celtics rivalry only exists when they meet up in the Finals?

by RA37thriller on Aug 4, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Is there a rivalry

When one team is curb stomping the other one and no one cares about it? That was the case when Shaq was in L.A. There was no bad blood, no tension, and no on-court drama to indicate anything like the Magic/Bird days were relevant. You’re trying to construct a moral argument that doesn’t work because it relies on emotions and feelings that never existed.

And yes, in the case of nearly all rivalries, it only rears its head when the games matter. Who would care about Boston when they’re a lottery team?

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

true rivalries matter. rivals get up to play each other no matter how their season is going. they don’t care whether they’ve won 20 in a row or lost 20 in a row, just as long as they beat their rivals. college football is a pretty good example. sucky teams will play extra hard against their rivals

I wouldn’t use Magic as an example, however. Wilt and Kareem are better. Would they have joined the Celtics? Of course not.

Shaq signing with Boston is wrong and it will only hurt his legacy.

Have you no sense of history?

Money is no argument here because he’s signing for the minimum.
I didn’t mind at all when the Heat won in 2006.
He could sign for 28 other teams and it wouldn’t matter.
The Celtics are the only forbidden team for a Laker Legend.
If he plays for them, he gives up his Legend status.

btw

RA37thriller, I’ll bet you if if Shaq is putting up significant numbers in a Finals series against us, everyone here is gonna be on the other side of the fence. Nobody sees that happening right now though. All we see is a slow, fatter Shaq trying to make some more money and get some more limelight before he eventually goes off and retires. As it is, can’t really hate him for it at the moment…

No former Laker great EVER signs with the Celtics. Did I mention his jersey presumably and rightfully so will be hanging in Staples.

So when I go to the games in future, I now get to stare at a nice yellow 34 jersey, only to realize that guy decided join the dark side and ring chase with the Celtics.

If the guy just wants to keep playing, that’s his right. And if Boston’s the only team that offered him a roster spot, what’s he supposed to do?

Sounds like either way we look at it, most people are really saying: "Shaq, just retire."

I guess that’s one draw back to being in the twilight of a career like Shaq’s. Plus, most fans are just tired of watching him pinball around the league the last few years.

Are you willing to grant Shaq the authority to decide when you should stop working in your chosen field? Seems only fair.

If someone would pay me to play basketball, I’d keep playing until they built a moat surrounded by an electric fence to keep me off the court. I wouldn’t give a shit who the team was. I’d play for Kim Jong-Il’s Traveling Black-Market Nuclear Arms-Proliferating All-Stars.

Totally agree. There are plenty of players that do play till the moat goes up...

but, a player like Shaq with such a strong resume is going to have a tougher time of it because most fans measure him against a higher standard than they should.
Personally, I think the guy put up good numbers and is worth a contract (not in L.A.). He is more deserving than many centers in the league, but not on the terms he was rumored to be shopping around.

yea,..as he sits and collects his 6.4 mil for the 10-11 season… and it was a better move for the Lakers anyway, Artest bothered Pierce like no one else could.. Ariza is a great defender, but not as good as Artest,.. as well as Artest hit some big shots in the playoffs (Suns game 5) and had some great games. Overall, better move for the Lakers and I wish Ariza the best in Houston.

by KBZ on Aug 3, 2010 11:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I hate Lebron but he could average a triple double per game and I would not be surprised if he wins his third straight MVP. Averaging like 15.5 PPG 10.2 RPG 10 APG would not be impossible for him since they have a crappy center he will grab the rebounds, with wade and bosh could easily have 10 assist and well have his points.

89-88!!!!! BEEP BEEP BEEP then Lebrons alarm goes off and he wakes up and goes downstairs to eat a delicious breakfast made by Lebrons mom and Delonte West.

I could see that

if they made a conscious effort to literally make him only a playmaker who plays off the ball and we’ll see how that works out. I mean I could see them actually stockpiling stats purposefully for each other, I mean their full of themselves enough. I mean, I used to like Wade. The whole, everyone in the league should thank us thing, kinda has me putting him on the villain side as well. Like damn Wade, and here we were thinking you were the humble one in the picture.

how so?

Doesn’t seem overly dickish. He’s wrote an opinion column that stated his thoughts about the NBA’s decision to release part of the schedule a week early, highlighting it’s marquee games. He, IMO, was simply voicing what fans of the teams w/o games are thinking.

Believe me, I’ll be excited when the Kansas City Chiefs finally show back up on SNF or MNF. Until then, I’ll continue to look at the NFL schedule with depression (it’s hard to get a Chiefs game in Arizona….)

It's obnoxious because he's the Heat beat writer

And he’s attempting to put on a facade of self-righteousness when he’s spent a good chunkk of the summer attempting to devise arguments in support of LeBron, Wade, and Bosh, arguably the league’s premier marquee team after the Lakers at this point. The argument he’s expressing in the piece I’m citing isn’t necessarily wrong — although it’s hard to blame the NBA from a marketing standpoint — but it’s so out of line with his current line that it’s hard to construe him as anything other than a hypocritical ass here.

Interesting stuff

Lakers won more rings than Christmas wins for the last decade. And it’s also amusing we always have games in Christmas. Which simply means Championship aren’t won in December or July …(Miami, cough,Heat).

Here’s the Breakdown:
2000 POR W
2001 PHI W
2002 SAC L
2003 HOU L
2004 MIA L
2005 MIA L
2006 MIA L
2007 PHO W
2008 BOS W
2009 CLE L

We gotta put an end to our losing streak against Heat during Christmas.

Don’t you love the chase? Sometimes it doesn’t work out; those are the stakes. But when it does work out, it’s like having that first cigarette: your head gets all dizzy, your heart pounds, your knees go weak. Remember that?
