Bynum as #5?

Behind Hoford, Bogut, Brook Lopez, and Dwight.

Okay, Dwight I get, but the others? Is it because of their stats, potential, skill? LOL. Bad ranking. Oh well.

Bogut is much better defensively

As is Horford, so those two are somewhat understandable. Bynum is definitely better than Lopez though.

Those guys play on crappy teams.

Not on the Lakers, where Bynum shares offensive looks with Kobe and Pau, and shares defense with Pau.

I think their stats are skewed and I believe Bynum to be better straight out than Horford and Lopez and better offensively than Bogut.

Compared to Bogut, Drew’s per is comperable, WS/48, FG%, FT%, are better than Bogut. Except Bogut got 1.1 blocks more per game, more rebounds, etc.. That’s because Bogut is on a crappier team. Share the lane with another 7 footer, an all-star 7 footer at that, I don’t think Bogut will do the same.

Anyway, Drew will get his in time, he’s still developing and needs to put in a full season.

A bit hard to call those teams "crappy"

When Milwaukee was second in the league in defensive efficiency and Atlanta was second in offensive efficiency. The stats aren’t really “skewed” either, as their usage rates (23.3 for Bogut, 20.8 for Bynum, 17.6 for Horford) are similar. Bynum was the more efficient scorer per TS% (60.8%), although Horford isn’t far behind (59.4%), an impressive number considering all the midrange jumpers he takes, and Bogut’s TS% (54.0%) gets dragged down by his poor FT% shooting. I’d give Bynum the edge offensively over both of them (and a very slight edge over Horford at that; he’s pretty solid on the offensive end), although both are definitely superior passers (10.3 assist ratio for Bogut, 5.8 for Bynum, 10.4 for Horford), a consistent knock against Bynum last year when he frequently forced the action against double teams.

Defensively though, Bogut and Horford were definitely a notch over Bynum. Beyond rebounding, in which Bogut and Horford outstrip Bynum by a significant margin (17.9 rebound rate for Bogut, 15.3 for Bynum, 16.4 for Horford), stats don’t really do them justice. Bogut was probably the best non-Howard defensive big in the league last year, and was not only effective on post and pick-and-roll defense, but was efficient and superb in his rotations, a staple of Skiles’ defense. As for Horford, he constantly plays out of position at the five and has to constantly deal with the breakdowns on the perimeter (as Bibby and Crawford are poor defenders), yet switches onto smaller players well, guards post-ups decently, and is a solid pick-and-roll defender. Bynum is definitely one of the best bigs to position in the middle of the lane and funnel penetration to, something he did well last year in addition to post defense, but he’s much more limited when taken out to the perimeter while Bogut and Horford are solid out there, and his rotations are often less than stellar while again, Bogut and Horford excel in that department.

As for the rankings, Bynum definitely has more upside than both of them, although I don’t see it as a knock against him to not be ranked higher than two of the best young players in the game.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Aug 30, 2010 1:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I like the analysis, good job.

I think you put Drew on those teams and we’ll see better numbers than either Bogut or Horford, but your stats don’t lie, and “what ifs” won’t do

. I do like the assist ratio stat though, Drew does tend to make up his mind and go for it like a bull charging. I’d rather he look for a pass if he gets bottled up quickly.
