Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Maybe it's because he's in the Phillipines, or maybe he's just a free talker, but Gary Payton doesn't mince words when comparing Kobe and Dwyane Wade in talking about the expectations on the Heat this season:

"I’ve played with Dwyane and it’s no knock on him but if you compare him with Kobe (Bryant), there’s a big difference in their work ethic. I played with Kobe, too, and he’d be more from my era. Kobe knows how to be humble. If Kobe loses a game, you’ll see him the next day in the gym, working extra hard to make sure he’ll be better. I don’t know if it’s the same with Dwyane. They’re both great players but Dwyane is more the show type..."

It's a bit strange coming from Payton, since DWade delivered him his only ring, but hey, the truth is da truth!

The truth is the truth

and to be honest my truth from watching Gary get his only ring was that the MAVs were robbed straight point blank so that ring doesn’t count in my mind and Gary does have a point, Wade might be all show. But we’ll see what the season brings, it should be fun. I’m just glad Kobe’s on my side.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be committed against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the Limelight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

lol, let's not start talking about which rings "count"

cause i’m sure there are a ton of laker haters that will say our 2010 ring doesn’t count, our 2002 rings doesn’t count, etc, etc. a championship is a championship.

Nah, I watched the Lakers get there rings and I've never seen such travesty then when

watching the damn Mavs series vs. the Heat, I can’t remembering exactly what it was but I’m telling you Mavs were jacked BIG TIME

I think it was when

game 5 hit and Dwyane Wade matched the exact number of fts as Dallas and then the Heat as a whole pretty much doubled itself. I’m not saying that it was set up, but I feel if everytime the Lakers get more than 5 fts on a team they’re win is questioned, then I think when Wade and Lebron get 20+ fts in a playoff game that should be questioned just as well. I don’t mind when people question the legitimacy of the Lakers games because people will always question something, it gets on my nerves that these guys aren’t questioned just as much.

Yeah, Yeah, right on the money

Okay maybe it wasn’t a set up but DAMN the Mav’s players couldn’t look at Dwayne Wade, it was THAT BAD, I’m serious, I never seen such foolish calls ever

The Heat got a title on a silver platter. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. The NBA lost me with those 20 free throws a night for Dwayne Wade business, and I wasn’t even a Mavs fan.

by Jevon O on Sep 2, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

kinda true

Game 1: Mavs 26 FTA, Heat 19 FTA (Wade 10 FTA)
Game 2: Mavs 28 FTA, Heat 32 FTA (Wade 14 FTA)
Game 3: Mavs 26 FTA, Heat 34 FTA (Wade 18 FTA)
Game 4: Mavs 27 FTA, Heat 36 FTA (Wade 9 FTA)
Game 5: Mavs 25 FTA, Heat 49 FTA (Wade 25 FTA)
Game 6: Mavs 23 FTA, Heat 37 FTA (Wade 21 FTA)

16.7 fts/game

There was nothing, not even a hint in the regular season that Dallas wasn’t the better team that could hold Wade without fouling. They were 2-0 against the Heat. They had held Wade to 41% shooting. He averaged 8 fts/game against them. Somehow, after losing 2 games, they all of a sudden said “hey, I know what we should do, we should just give the ball to Wade and see what he does.” Except that was their gameplan all along and through 4 games nothing changed, but for the last 4 games all of a sudden it worked. There is only one game, game 4, that the heat extremely outplayed the Mavericks in every facet of the game. The disparity in ft attempts went up ridiculously. The sad part is that even with 49 fta, the Heat won game 5 by all of 1 point. There is no stretch of games in the playoffs that anyone can point to for the Lakers with that kind of ft disparity. In fact, usually for the Lakers they only mention one game or one moment that turned a point in the series. I can point to 3 of the last 4 games of that finals and be like hmmm…. I can’t believe you just put up game 5 as evidence on here. Or game 6, or game 3. smh. I mean, I know we’re Laker fans and we hear this all the time and refute it to the hardest, but there isn’t really a case here that you made that has proved otherwise. Even Dwyer points that series out as a funny case, even though he puts it off on Avery johnson just because he’s looking for another explanation and ignores the type of analysis that makes him a better writer. Analysis that says through 4 games, the Mavs were the better team by a lot, and somehow that all changed in the middle of game 3

well, it's mostly the 2002 WCF everyone loves to point to

just cause i’m having so much fun going through basketball-reference:

Game 1: Kings 17 FTA, Lakers 22 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 13 FTA)
Game 2: Kings 38 FTA, Lakers 25 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 16 FTA)
Game 3: Kings 35 FTA, Lakers 15 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 8 FTA)
Game 4: Kings 26 FTA, Lakers 27 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 16 FTA)
Game 5: Kings 33 FTA, Lakers 23 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 12 FTA)
Game 6: Kings 25 FTA, Lakers 40 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 28 FTA)
Game 7: Kings 30 FTA, Lakers 33 FTA (Kobe & Shaq 25 FTA)

3 Heat can't stop the 3peat.

The sad part is that

through 6 games, Dwayne Wade averaged more fts than Kobe and Shaq combined in that series. 15.5 compared to 16.7

I should say through 6 games of the 2002 series

and the entire finals, Wade actually averages more fts

funny how everyone likes to bitch about 2002

through the entire series:
Kings: 204 FTA (averaged 29.1 FTA per game)
Lakers: 185 FTA ( averaged 26.4 FTA per game)

Anyway, the Kings win the series if they protect that huge lead in game 4/Vlade REBOUNDS Shaq’s miss and/or make their FTs in game 7.

I am not trying to say game 6 wasn’t poorly officiated, but the Kings had their chances.
