Will Dampier Be A Good Fit For LA?
Just as the Boston Celtics singing of Shaq and J. O'neal proved, you can never have too much size. Although the Ratliff signing was a great pick up and he will play better than Mbenga did, it would still be great to pick up another big. As good as Ratliff is as a back up that is all he can serve as and nothing more. He is too old to be considered the type of player who can handle a lot of minutes in case Bynum gets injured (knock on wood).
I am in no way an expert on the specifics of contracts so I am not sure how it would work if the Bobcats were to infact waive Dampier. But it wouldn't hurt to at least take a look at him. Although Dampier being waived still remains to be seen, the signing of Kwame Brown by the Bobcats sure is a good indication of their intentions.
Also, I know that the Lakers have made great additions this off season but one more wouldn't hurt. Especially if it means addidng more size.
I'm using some vacation time to tend to two elderly parents (thanks, Ron Green Jr., for filling in), but when I heard about the Bobcats signing Kwame Brown, I figured I'd blog in:
Some thoughts:
-- Again this is one more indication the Bobcats will eventually waive Erick Dampier's contract to off-load about $13 million in salary responsibility. Sorry if that ticks some of you off (I know you want Dampier to be a trade chip), and they certainly gave up an asset in Tyson Chandler.

Nope.
We don’t have the need for him, the room for him and the money for him.

Just because you throw someone a pass, and they score, it doesn't mean you made them a better player.
Of course you would.

bobcats should've kept tyson chandler instead of trading for dampier
he looks pretty good on team USA. and healthy for the first time in years
According to Jordan that move was mostly for financial reasons.
Having Dampier and his 13 mil come off the books is huge.
"That means no more coming into camp fat and out of shape, when your team is relying on your leadership on and off the court. It also means no more blaming others for our team's failure, or blaming staff members for not overdramatizing your injuries so that you avoid blame for your lack of conditioning. " Kobe on Shaq being a leader
no...
…if it’s for the sake of being able to match up to the Celtics’ frontcourt. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good team philosophy to build a team designed to beat a specific team. I like what the Lakers does, only filling the holes of an established team identity. Thus, the Laker team is built based on an “identity” or recipe and not for the purpose of defeating a specific team or kind of team. The Lakers are more concerned on winning it all and not on beating a particular team or kind of team.
Besides, the Lakers are already stocked. No more room. And I’m wary to trade Luke and Sasha (the two likely to be moved) to make space. I like those guys, and if ever they will be moved, the player/s that the Lakers should get for them in return should be someone with a higher standard than someone like Dampier.

defenitely agree with your opinion about it not being a good strategy to
make moves to battle a specific team. My only concern is Bynum and his absence does more damage than what you see on paper. He takes everyone out of their normal position and it causes bad mismatches.

true...
…but we can give the C position to Kobe if Bynum goes down again. Back to Hakeem-mode.
Kidding aside, we’ll let Phil figure it out if Bynum ever goes in a hiatus. But let’s think positively: that Bynum would be healthy throughout the year for a change :)

You're blowing this a bit out of proportion
Our primary frontcourt rotation is set. If anything, bringing Dampier on would replace Ratliff’s minutes, which are already so marginal (spot duty for foul trouble, end of quarters, and garbage time) that it’s a bit remiss to talk about it as “match[ing] up” for anything. This wouldn’t change our identity at all really.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
when I mean "no more room"...
…it should be presumed that it not only speaks of minutes, but cap space as well…

We had no cap space to begin with
All our signings were made with either the midlevel exception or the veterans’ minimum, the latter of which would be doled out to Dampier in a hypothetical signing.

ok
still “no”

Given that I clearly stated below that I don't support this
I find your answer quizzical.

didn't read it, sorry
thought you want to sign him based on your comment above.
To clear it up, based on this premise: “…you can never have too much size. Although the Ratliff signing was a great pick up and he will play better than Mbenga did, it would still be great to pick up another big”, I didn’t interpret that any signing of Damps PER SE is for the purpose of designing a team to combat the Celtics but IF (first word after the title) it’s for that reason, I don’t think that’s a good idea. And JB has the same sentiments.
So, I also found your first comment quizzical.

My first comment?
It’s not at odds with my statement below. The general point is that we’re dealing with moves so marginal to the team that to run out statements like below:
…if it’s for the sake of being able to match up to the Celtics’ frontcourt. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good team philosophy to build a team designed to beat a specific team. Is nothing more than hyperbole and I noted as such. Our backup five plays so few minutes that any impact he has is incredibly muted, so to claim that it’s a move specifically based on countering Boston’s frontcourt (which our frontcourt already outclasses by a significant margin, but I digress) is simply not true, nor is claiming such a move would somehow impact the Lakers’ “identity,” which again, is not the case given how diminished of a role our backup five has in the rotation.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
I see what you mean
but again, I was speaking hypothetically though… if signing of Damps was for that purpose. Stocking with too many bigs, at least to me, would seem like an arms race (for bigs) against the Celtics. (“you can never have too much size…” “…it would still be great to pick up another big.”) But you are right, it’s insignificant. Kind of Damps would be the Mihm as Theo is the Mbenga. Really trivial to the overall scheme of things.
Again – and you’re with me – “No.”

would we pay him in gum?
Regardless we don’t want him anyway. Remember Pau and Andrew? What about Lamar? And a certain seasoned gentlemen named Theo? Not to mention a rookie named Caracter.
Seems to me we have enough bigs.
Born purple and gold. Live purple and gold. Die purple and gold.
He's superfluous
While he’s certainly much better than Ratliff, there are no minutes to give him. No real point in signing him.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
NO
that is all.
