USA-France Open Thread
Microphone check, one-two one-two.
We are gathered here today because there's actual basketball to watch. Our very own Lamar Odom will be leading the red, white and blue against... well, a different red, white and blue. The opponent is France, the game is at Madison Square Garden at 10:00 a.m. California time, and the sights and sounds can be enjoyed on ESPN2 and/or ESPN3.com.
Boris Diaw captains the French team, which includes down-market NBA players Nicolas Batum, Ian Mahinmi and Alexis Ajinca. Sadly, Frederic Weis will not be there today to enrage Knicks fans. Just for fun and to warm you up for this game, however, there's video of Vince Carter's historic dunk on Weis after the cut.
Let's get buck nasty, y'all.

I can't stand to watch baseball anymore
And the analysts are outright retarded. What’s the point of having such a long season if you’re already discussing who’s going to the playoffs with FIFTY GAMES TO PLAY?!?!?!?! Why play so many damn games if half the league is out of it by June, and by July only 10-12 teams still have a shot. And now we got what, 30 games left? Baseball is too fucking long and boring.
Am I the only one who gets offended that Yahoo has the NFL and MLB buttons before the NBA's?

It is.
In fact, the NBA is almost on par with the NHL.

It depends on how you rank them.
Based on game attendance, the NHL is actually ahead of the NBA.

Everytime i see MLB games on TV, all the poor performing teams have no one in the stands
The same with NBA. If your teams is bad, people wont go out to watch. NFL always gets fans because its a one week thing and its on the weekends mostly. Most of NBA games are during the work week

The average MLB game has about 30,000 fans in attendance.
Whereas the NBA is only about 17,000. The fact that the MLB season is has like a hundred more games than the NBA makes this statistic even more interesting.

I think the NBA is thriving in my books. As I mentioned, look at this summer…all that was aired was NBA free agency, even when the NFL season is just about to start. People are getting more interested in the league. The NBA is the most controversial league. Thats why its intriguing

Which is a bit of an inflated figure
The owners are losing money, but not that much.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
I'm excited!
I can’t wait to see how this point guard and small forward heavy roster will compete against bigger teams like Spain.
But even more so than that, I’m consumed by thought of what the 2012 roster could possibly look like. If the 8 core players commit (Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Melo, Paul, Williams, Howard, and Bosh), that will leave 4 spots open. Boozer and Prince have also been given an “pass” on 2010 to still be elgible for 2012. And of course, most obviously, there were be atleast a few more young studs available by 2012 to fill out the roster.
Durant is obviously going to be the top scorer on this team, because the offense will give him the most shots out of sets. But add KD to the Redeem Team. Is he still going to be “the guy”? And that’s an interesting lineup issue. Wade rode the bench behind Kobe and Kidd, while Melo played PF. Where would KD fit in the starting lineup?
i think in 2012
the starting line-up will be CP3, durant, bron, melo and howard. wade and kobe will be 31 and 33 respectively by then and probably have two more long seasons under their belt, and they may be relegated to the bench to save their energy.
3peat.
Starting Lineup
Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, Andre Igoudala, Chauncey Billups, and Rajon Rondo
I’m surprised KD is going to play PF, but France is not bulky.

"ripples through the nba world"?
everyone knows melo is not signing and is gone next year. btw, lol at spike lee wearing his jersey…
3peat.
and it's not like Denver is screwed next year
they have only $6 million in guaranteed contracts and $17 if Nene exercises his player option. Even under the current system, Denver would have plenty of cap space to rebuild unlike Cleveland.
Because star-caliber players are going to be flocking to ...
Denver?
I think they’re effed. They got lucky with Melo, and built some players around him. They’re done if he leaves.

If you build it
they will come. It only takes one big name to say I’m going to Denver and then we could see it become great again even without Melo, but they will probably have to rebuild for a year or two. They’ll probably sign Billups again and then try to trade his expiring contract through the year to get someone and then build around Lawson and whoever they might be able to get for Billups’ experience and maybe even try to package Birdman’s horrendous deal off their books.
Unfortunately the legend of MJ has long surpassed the reality of MJ. -Joshua S.
alot of Durantula hatin in here lol
Faith.... a fan's biggest downfall
my opinion is...
that Durant has become a “Foul Creator.” While he is a great player, IMO he’s no better than Carmelo Anthony. Melo has more bulk and is better down low, but Durant is probably a bit quicker and has more vertical.
My problem is that Durant, on offense, has become a player who seeks out situations to merely create fouls so he can get to the FT line where he shoots 90%. While a good perimeter scorer, this is mostly against undersized guards and forwards who end up hitting him on his elbows because of his legendary length. Against a taller players, or players with more bulk to go with speed (AK47, Artest, Melo), Durant relies on the swing-through foul when these players body him up on the perimeter.
Overall, KD is a Top 10 NBA player. But he’s not a great perimeter player if you take away his ability to create FTAs for himself. His game, IMO, is better suited for the mid-range and elbow game, like Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett. KG is an almost perfect example. Durant needs to bulk up more, and become a true forward hybrid.
yeah he needs to get ripped if he really wants to be dominant
Faith.... a fan's biggest downfall
by desecrator09 on Aug 15, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions
yeah, take away durant's FTAs, he's not THAT great of a perimeter player
plus i think he’s been getting a ton of hype over this summer. i don’t think he’s in the top 3 by any means, right now. maybe in the next coming years.
3peat.
Well, getting to foul line is a part of becoming an efficient scorer. There are other parts of his game
that need work such as creating for others and passing and defending.
I disagree completely
I love Durants game. He’s just fine. He’s skinny because he’s playing SG and not sacrificing speed. He’s trying to bulk up, but his skinny frame is what makes him fast.
Yeah
well he played SF last year and its really no surprise that his speed wasn’t enough to get him going against Artest. He really does have to bulk up at least some. He shouldn’t be smaller than Kobe by any means.
Unfortunately the legend of MJ has long surpassed the reality of MJ. -Joshua S.
I understand that you guys are saying he "didn't get going against Artest"...
But nobody did in the playoffs last year. That is not a valid baseline. Pierce shot his lowest FG% against Artest also. The only time Durant got off on Artest was when he went by him or shot over him. Yea, he may gain bulk over time; but that is not his strong point. It’s speed, height, and shooting.
Actually
his strong point is his ability to draw fouls through various methods. He still needs bulk if he ever wants to develop a post game or maneuver his way on the court without being completely stopped. Like I said, he does not need to be any smaller than Kobe if he is going to be playing SF.
These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the end game. - Charlie Wilson
LOL @ people not saying that Durant's strong point is shooting.
Even I said the OKC foul disparity for their home games was rough in the Lakers first round series. But you’ll not hear me say anything bad about his stroke.
’Tis marvelous.
M a r v e l o u s
It is marvelous
just because his strongest suit is drawing fouls doesn’t mean shooting isn’t his strong suit. He’s just at his best when he can get in a rhythm at the ft line and then get into a groove with his shot. His shot mechanics are marvelous, but he’s at his best when he gets his defenders in foul trouble and the defender can’t get into a rhythm instead of him having to play himself into a rhythm. No one’s criticizing his stroke.
These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the end game. - Charlie Wilson
keep your fingers crossed that Denver implodes
and looks to completely rebuild as I suggested. Billups is a Team Option in 2011-12.

The Weis dunk was real live action, but you might be right. His 2000 Dunk Contest was the best Dunk Contest ever. After seeing all these lame dunk contest where winners take 3-5 attempts to pull of dunks, seeing Vince’s win was a masterpiece as far as dunks go. One take for all of them. That’s also something I respected about Dwight’s dunks. He nailed most on the first attempt.

I’m not hating on hip-hop, in actuality, I like it, it was my favorite genre, until about 2004, when it really just turned down hill. I am hating on current generation hip-hop, but I still enjoy 90’s and early 2000’s rap.

These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the end game. - Charlie Wilson
I'm not even going to say that
half of the new stuff on the radio is a combination of all the stuff that people have wanted for years. They combine the dance music people loved in the 1990s, not exactly the same but there were all kinds of dances in the 1990s that were just terrible with songs that were likewise, with the hardcore gritty image that people always seem to want. Does it mix well? No, but thats what happens when legions of people feel it better to download shit instead of buy it and the majority of people who buy it have a terrible taste in good hip hop music.
Its not that different than a lot of the records you got in the 1990s. Only difference is back then people used to buy real hip hop music as well, so it had more exposure, now if your name isn’t established already its hard as heck to get a song on the radio let alone a worthwhile deal without a plug from an established artist. I hate when people say this generation of music sucks. Do you realize people used to dance to MC Hammer’s Pumps and a Bump? Seriously, the only difference between now and then is the exposure. Oh and there are other reasons dealing with label ownership and all that stuff, but there is no need for a history lesson
These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the end game. - Charlie Wilson
Wait

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be committed against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the Limelight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.
"Like Mike" is on TV
I am laughing at how realistic it is. Apparently after draining a gamewinner over David Robinson in his first game, the kid gets signed to a lucrative contract. I dont even think KAHHHHNNNN is that stupid.

The United States of America (also referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, the States, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the Caribbean and Pacific.
At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2) and with over 309 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and the third largest both by land area and population. It is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The U.S. economy is the world’s largest national economy, with an estimated 2009 GDP of $14.3 trillion (a quarter of nominal global GDP and a fifth of global GDP at purchasing power parity).
Indigenous peoples of Asian origin have inhabited what is now the mainland United States for many thousands of years. This Native American population was greatly reduced by disease and warfare after European contact. The United States was founded by thirteen British colonies located along the Atlantic seaboard. On July 4, 1776, they issued the Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed their right to self-determination and their establishment of a cooperative union. The rebellious states defeated the British Empire in the American Revolution, the first successful colonial war of independence. The current United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787; its ratification the following year made the states part of a single republic with a strong central government. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten constitutional amendments guaranteeing many fundamental civil rights and freedoms, was ratified in 1791.
In the 19th century, the United States acquired land from France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Russia, and annexed the Republic of Texas and the Republic of Hawaii. Disputes between the agrarian South and industrial North over states’ rights and the expansion of the institution of slavery provoked the American Civil War of the 1860s. The North’s victory prevented a permanent split of the country and led to the end of legal slavery in the United States. By the 1870s, the national economy was the world’s largest. The Spanish–American War and World War I confirmed the country’s status as a military power. It emerged from World War II as the first country with nuclear weapons and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union left the United States as the sole superpower. The country accounts for two-fifths of global military spending and is a leading economic, political, and cultural force in the world.

Pretty much every "American" food has origins in another country.
Pizza – Italy
Hamburger – Germany
French Fries – …duhh
Hot Dogs – Germany
I think soda is the only food that is truly American.

Then Lebron's alarm goes off and he wakes up and goes downstairs to eat a delicious breakfast made by his mom and Delonte West."
