Yes it is!

"That means no more coming into camp fat and out of shape, when your team is relying on your leadership on and off the court. It also means no more blaming others for our team's failure, or blaming staff members for not overdramatizing your injuries so that you avoid blame for your lack of conditioning. wants the lakers to trade for his draft rights. (just my opinion)

by grail on Aug 14, 2010 9:10 AM PDT reply actions

he wants to play in the NBA

which was why he signed up for the draft. he just didnt want to play for the wolves

by grail on Aug 14, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, his rights are owned by the Wolves right?

And they are currently building a roster for him.

which is why he’s still in spain.

you trade him. hell, you do remember how we got gasol right? and we’re talking about KAAAHHHN!

i like this idea

perhaps the start of a new dynasty with Bynum once the Kobe/Pau dynasty looks like it’s on it’s way out (hopefully after a few more rings). Unfortunately, other teams probably have a lot more to offer for Rubio, considering we actually want to keep our current players so that can win now rather than later.

by wickedskillz on Aug 14, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

He's not even that great.

I said it.

Seriously, he’s nowhere near the elite points in this league.

but

consider his age, he has potential to be one of the best points.

by grail on Aug 14, 2010 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

eh

you never know til he actually plays some NBA ball. He has great vision and passing and good ball handling. His shooting seems OK nothing special at the moment. He has decent form though, so he could improve. He’s fast and has good lateral quickness. Hops and strength are a definite concern. I doubt he’d be a good scorer ala Rose, DWill or CP3, but as a pure point he seems to have lots of potential, especially in the transition game.
He has the potential to be pretty good, but he’s definitely unproven. Hopefully we get to see more of how he stacks up against the NBAers in a couple of weeks.

by wickedskillz on Aug 14, 2010 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

yep

key word is potential

by grail on Aug 14, 2010 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

and

he already played in the olympics, where he repeatedly burned Kobe’s defense. I think he’ll be fine in the NBA.

Athletically he's not there

Sure he’s quick, up and down the court, and we know that players with some speed and lots of vision can make it (Steve Nash). The thing is, he’s no where near Steve Nash. Nor is he athletic enough to get in and finish like Westbrook, CP, etc.

I think if he has lateral quickness like, say Parker, maybe he can make an impact.

Olympic basketball is not NBA basketball. Euro league basketball is not NBA basketball.

On the upside, he’s young, and everybody has mentioned potential. Minnesota or not, why not pull the trigger, obviously he’s already rich.

I'll agree with everything you said

but I don’t think the comparisons are ideal. He just isn’t in the same mold as those guys. All of those guys are great scorers, they can all take it to the rack through contact and get to the line. Rubio’s not gonna do that for you.

Rubio’s strength is his natural feel for the game. He’s good at controlling the tempo and flow of a game. He has good instincts and sees plays before they develop. He’ll get into the paint, but because of his size he’s not gonna be the guy taking heavy knocks or taking it strong to the rack. Think more finesse, like a hand-off to a slashing big, a no look bounce pass to a guy cutting back door, or a flipped floater. He’s more Pau than Bynum.

In terms of comparisons, Rondo somewhat comes to mind. Rubio will be your guy that won’t care about his own numbers, will know where guys should be and how to get em the ball. He plays with clear passion, and that is always something that will get you far.

Regarding why he hasn’t come to Minny yet, there’s a few things I’ve heard. First, he doesn’t want to rush the move to the NBA. He’s only 19 and feels as if has plenty of time to build a career. He want to improve his game so that he isn’t a disappointment early on that’s lost at the end of someone’s bench. He understands that foreign players often are unsuccessful when they go to the NBA , build a bad rep and get confidence issues, and then have to go back to their own countries. He doesn’t want to be one of those guys. He has a contract with a team that would be expensive to buy out. These are all things he’s said in interveiws.

In my own opinion though, he probably loves life in Spain. He’s a star on a good team, he’s well liked by the fans, his team is popular and WINS a lot. It’s gotta be hard to trade that for cold winters with Minnesota, a bunch of scrubs on your team, KAAHHHNN as your GM, and newspapers on your ass all day criticizing you when you can’t turn the situation around in your rookie year. Not to mention, 21 other PGs on your roster to compete and have bad blood with. That said, it’s somewhat likely he might come to the NBA next year. He has a buyout clause where he’ll only have to pay 1 million next year, and he’s gonna turn 20 as well. It’s not a definite thing, but this is what was discussed the last time he met with Rambis.

NBA life will definitely be tougher and a big step for him. He’s gonna have good old fashion NBA centers swatting him to the ground to see if he can get back up from it. He’s gonna have bigger PGs like Deron Williams bodying him up. He’s gonna have high expectations to live up to and the press up his ass every time he has a bad game. This is what happens when your reputation precedes you. Also like you said, the NBA is in no way the EuroLeague and you can’t just assume he’s gonna be good, let alone great.

All I’m saying though is that kid has game and he has heart. He admittedly looks a little soft, and is probably over hyped because of his youth, floppy hair and toothy smile. But still, it’ seems too soon to write him off. I think he can be good, but not with Minnesota, not on a roster where he’s expected to be the leader right off the bat. Put him in a Rondo-like situation though, and I think he could really shine.

by wickedskillz on Aug 14, 2010 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Geez

I have no idea how that got that long. Anything to distract you from studying huh.

by wickedskillz on Aug 14, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice reply.

Although, 19 years old? It’s time to move. Injuries happen. I think he does like being in Spain, being a star. If that’s what he wants, then stay. Otherwise, he needs to get to the NBA.

He doesn’t get to the rack because he lacks the athletic ability. He also doesn’t have a very good jump shot. Good ball movement is one thing, good vision another. To be a truly great player though, you need a complete game. He doesn’t have it…. Maybe he’ll develop it later.

Great reply though.

The same reason he is not a good fit in Minnesota applies in LA.

He is not a fit for the triangle.

Don't let the name deceive you, I'm not just a Sharks fan but a Lakers, 49ers, Angels, Giants (and to a lesser extent) Capitals, and Titans fan.

by SharksFanEst.1994 on Aug 14, 2010 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree

As the triangle doesn’t really need a pure point, but considering that this is presumably PJ’s last year as coach we have to assume that the Lakers will have to move to a more conventional offense. And there are rumblings that Buss wants “Showtime” back.

by grail on Aug 14, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

He can't shoot, can't finish, and depends on the pick-and-roll

For his creativity to shine. In other words, he’s a horrible fit for the triangle.
