This is my first post, hope you dig it. Please share your thoughts.
Reading about some of the major free agents possibly joining forces has reminded me of something I heard a few months ago. A friend mentioned that he'd heard or read somewhere that at some point Pat Riley confessed he had wanted Shaq so much, he would have included D-Wade in the trade to get him. Only problem: the Lakers never asked, as they assumed Wade wasn't available.
My first reaction was, "No way, I don't believe it." Then I thought well, it may sound nice, but it never would have worked, since both Kobe and Wade would have needed Alpha status. Now I start to wonder: would Wade have been satisfied as Kobe's Scottie Pippen? Would they have dominated the league, even assuming their team had lesser big men than the Lakers actually have now (and no D-fish puttin' nails in the competition with the those clutch playoff 3's)?
Anyone think there's any truth to what my friend said? You think a team with Kobe and D-Wade would have won two or more championships in the last 6 years? Of course this is a useless philosophical exercise and there is no way to know what would have happened, but still I'm curious. Of course the team (and the league) would be drastically different if the Lakes had done that move. The first thing that comes to mind is that we wouldn't have ended up with Pau as the scenario leading up to his trade would have been entirely different...
Bottom line: Going into the 2010-2011 season would you rather have Kobe and Pau (and D-fish and Ron) or Kobe and D-Wade?
