Matt Barnes Is Holding Up a Laker Jersey

The headline above and the electrifying photo to the right capture the most interesting thing to happen at Matt's introductory press conference today. Except when he said that he's always despised the Lakers, he thinks it sucks he has to play for Phil Jackson, and he's never getting another tattoo.

No. Crap, wait... let me double check.

(*squints, sticks tongue out side of mouth in concentration*)

Yeah, sorry. Turns out he said the opposite of those things. I'm a good reporter!

I mean no offense to Barnes...

and am loving the idea of him on the Lakers.

I read that the offer to Shannon was already on the table but that it was up to him to accept it

so I doubt it has anything to with Brown. I think what might be holding out Brown is that he is in talks with the Bulls.

that would piss me off

but the more I think about it it seems that the lakers would be the ones getting future draft picks. That is the only way that they can make it work so that it doesnt count on their current salary. They can still sign ebanks and caracter and still meet the required 13 players. Or if he gets waived the Lakers can bring him back at a lower cost. im sure someone can clear that up.

by thestuff01 on Jul 27, 2010 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

he became a laker so he can have more leverage in future for bigger contracts

he was trying to get a bigger contract since in his 8 seasons he has been to 8 teams… but no one is offering him long term contracts so he said it himself that maybe after getting a ring or going deep in playoffs he will get some spotlight and hopefully get longer contracts in future…

by rballer on Jul 27, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Instead, the free-agent market passed him by while a potential deal with Toronto fell through and other teams filled their perimeter needs. Barnes is good, but still not quite good enough to command NBA security—but he thinks maybe a ring on his finger will help that quest in the future.

from PDcavsinsider, pretty legit source…

The #Cavs have talked to Shannon Brown, agent Mark Bartelstein says, but not serious. Doesn’t seem like it is going to happen.

Brown wants to play for the Lakers and the Lakers want him back. He’ll likely eventually sign there, this is all about haggling over $.

by Justin N. on Jul 27, 2010 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Except Brown is cheaper than Vujacic

Assuming he signs for ~$3 million/year and Vujacic gets traded for a non-guaranteed contract or to a team under the cap, Buss saves around $4 million (Vujacic’s ~$5 million contract along with the luxury tax bill of $5 million as versus the total $6 million on Brown’s deal along with the tax). That’s the key motivation here.

Buss wants to save around $10 million from dumping his contract on top of the extra luxury tax bill.

Meh, salary dump

Can’t blame Buss because he went out and put the money forward to get Blake and Barnes, and if they’re signing Brown, Sasha is really the odd man out here. We can still use Walton’s contract to get players during the season if he’s really retiring.

This sounds like an agent is using windhorst to

1) make it seem like interest in Brown isn’t worth it
2) lakers are so interested in Brown they’re willing to trade sasha
3) which reinforces the notion that Brown isn’t genuinely interested in other teams; he’s just using them for leverage.

a bunch of guys worked out for the cavs today, mostly athletic swingmen. if he can discourage other teams, then they’ll shift their interest in Brown to one of his clients.

quid pro quo: in return for his assistance, he’ll give windhorst a scoop sometime down the road.

Doubt that

I gotta disagree with us trading Sasha because of Matt's arrival

I believe Matt doesn’t fit well as SG and I dunno if he can handle the ball (Sasha is decent playing as PG/SG with us). Matt only plays SF.

If we resign Shannon, that probably makes Sasha expendable. But personally, I want Sasha over Brown despite the latter’s exciting highlights.

I’ve been lurking here for quite some time, and I’m just wondering, are there any Fisher bashing Laker fans that stay here a lot?

I usually frequent Forum Blue and Gold, and honestly, I’m getting tired of all the meaningful conversations there turning into a back and forth Fisher bash fest.
I love the guy, and can’t understand why some Laker fans just can’t stop short of sodomizing the guy with their perception of how he just “kills” the Lakers

Anyway, back on point, I don’t think anyone here’s like that.. hopefully. Conversations are usually wacky and whatnot, but the points still get across though, so that’s a plus really :D

That he was utterly horrible for the entire year until he got into the playoffs and went from “complete disaster” to “somewhat serviceable player.”

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

Agreed.

You can’t argue with the facts, but it gets pretty old bringing that up over and over and over again. Fisher’s a lower tier PG, in the bottom 90% of the league talent pool, we get that…. it’s not like people are making him out to be the avatar of the Archangel Gabriel on the basketball court.

My major beef was topics/conversations getting hijacked by Fisher bashing… like for example the Hollinger article about the offseason losers and our FA signings.

From what I see here on SSaR, no one’s beating up that dead horse anymore. Heck, you people even made it a running joke about how his “Intangibles” are his prime contribution to this team, haha.

by Hokkun on Jul 28, 2010 3:09 AM PDT up reply actions

fish's intangibles are irreplacable.

we live and die by fisher’s intangibles! yea those are some awesome intangibles to say the least.

uhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

if you hung here with us over the course of the last season, most people ripped on fisher at some point, including the mods. Its nothing personal or anything, the guy has made clutch shots in many of our runs and stepped it up in this year’s playoffs, but he was pretty awful in the regular season. His shooting dropped off, his defense overall was pretty bad, plus he was a poor finisher on fast breaks which made us coin the funny terms WALIT (Weak Ass Layup In Transition) and PUJIT (Pull Up Jumper In Transition).

Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?

to get to the gist

We all still love and respect Fisher.

THIS.

I have nothing against criticizing Fish, everyone has critics. But there’s a huge difference between that and totally disregarding and conveniently forgetting any other positives he brought to the team… even if they ARE “only” his “intangibles”.

by Hokkun on Jul 28, 2010 3:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Premature post fail

Never really got the point across commending you on how the Fish respect is still being flown around here in spite of his shortcomings. Lol.

by Hokkun on Jul 28, 2010 3:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, we coined WALIT

But PUJIT has been around for a while now.

yep, since Trevor

Sasha vs Shannon vs Roger Mason

We made massive upgrade to the bench’s defense, but bench scoring is still an issue. I think Mason could give us more offensive stability off the bench than either Sasha or Shannon. As for Barnes at SG, he is a bad shooter and I’d rather have him stay at SF than slide to the 2 spot.

I’d love to see the return of the Machine and the maturation of Shannon, but my head is telling me Roger Mason Jr. would be a better, smarter fit. If Sasha gets traded in a salary dump, and I support Buss for wanting to do so, is Shannon really the best alternative? I love both these guys, but they screw up by trying to do too much and playing with inconsistency.

Last season Mason asked for a trade because he wanted more minutes, and the Spurs tried to accommodate him, but couldn’t pull it off. That he hasn’t been signed yet may indicate we could land him for the vet minimum.

lol huh?! do u know what your saying lol

Financially Brown is a better fit because we can sign him for less and he’ll play essentially the same role as Sasha.

Bird rights are what enable us to resign brown while over the cap…….

i think it's like..

you can sign them even if you’re over the salary cap. and every player’s salary adds to the cap.

by lakers are trouble on Jul 29, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

If over the tax limit, you pay

The salary cap is roughly $58M.
The tax limit is roughly $70M.
Bird rights basically let you go over the $58M limit to sign one of your own players.
There’s a buffer between the limits so if a team is frugal, they can use their Bird rights to sign current players up to a point and not pay a tax.
But what ever amount the total salary is over $70M is taxed dollar for dollar.
So if the Lakers total salary is $94M, they pay $24M in tax.
The tax kitty is distributed to the teams that are under the salary cap.
Oh, and teams have to spend a minimum amount on salary. I think it’s around $35M.

You see? You see? Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!

um hello…. we don’t need scoring…. we just need defense…. if we ever need scoring, we will have Bynum, Odom, or Gasol on the court with these guys….

Offense is the last of our worries

by robi s on Jul 28, 2010 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

my point is to add one bench that CAN score so we can play Gasol and other starters less minutes

Lol I don’t think Sasha is going anywhere… Mitch tried to do a V Rad type trade just to free up some money. I think most teams are content to see what they have (cept the Celtics of course)

We might see Sasha move closer to the trade deadline, when teams will be trying to clear space to make a move for Carmelo, i guess.

In Kobe we trust!

Just clearign space for CP3 in 2012.......
