john hollinger thinks lakers are losers this offseason
http://myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/5412749/sort/oldest are the posts by the people who read the article since i dont have insider :(
but it seems that hollinger said the lakers were one of the losers this offseason. has he always been bias towards the lakers or is this all based on his numbers systems? Alot of the commentors suggest that hollinger just put the lakers in this article so people will read it (thats why i looked at it, it had a picture of kobe on the page). I dont understand how the lakers can be considered losers when they strengthened their weaknesses..anyone got an idea about this?

“Los Angeles Lakers
What, you ask, did the Lakers do wrong? Nothing — in fact, they shored up the point guard spot with Steve Blake and got a tough gamer for peanuts in Matt Barnes. And, of course, they coaxed Phil Jackson to stay on the bench for one more season.
All that would have made the Lakers overwhelming favorites to repeat as champions next season, except for a little thing that went down in Miami. With the Heat looking like a super team, the Lakers find themselves downgraded to co-favorites at best, through no fault of their own.
Had James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh aligned themselves in any other combination with any other team, that wouldn’t be the case. Thus, L.A. lost ground this summer, even though, in narrower terms, it won with the additions of Barnes and Blake."
…IMO, if the Lakers are losers and did nothing wrong, then every team other than Miami is an offseason Loser. Chimpy is a tool and he’s just talking out of his ass since he doesn’t a stat or a way to quantify off-season performance.

Woah woah
You can’t criticize Hollinger for constantly basing virtually ALL of his analyses and predictions on statistics (which we all do, and rightly so), and then come along later and criticize him for not basing his position on statistics.
That said, I agreed with every word of your comment up until and including the word “ass”.
His position is correct, technically, since the Lakers ability to repeat is, at least in my opinion, threatened by the new Heat — moreso than from any other source, moreso than it would have been had the Nazgul not all gone to Miami, and moreso than it was at the start of last year. But your point is equally correct that if that is the standard by which he is going to evaluate off-season results, then EVERY OTHER TEAM must also be considered Losers. All of which makes the use of such a standard gimmicky and irrelevant, rather than useful and informative, let alone worthwhile.
A more valid perspective would be to evaluate each team relative to how they improved their lot relative to the start of the season, rather than based on some absolute standard (i.e., likelihood to win a championship). From that perspective, the Lakers may be less likely to repeat than they were last year (or than they would be had the Heat not formed), but they are clearly more likely to repeat than they were on July 1. By that much more meaningful, relevant, and useful standard, the Lakers are winners this off-season. Perhaps not Super Lotto winners, but winners nonetheless.
robi s is correct. As he has always done, and as seems to be the modus operandi for ESPN as a whole, Hollinger is simply making waves and creating controversy to get hits — and in his specific case, to attempt to drive up membership in his and Chad Ford’s ludicrous ESPN Insider service rip-off.

If winning entails getting 3 good players and the rest of the team sucks,
then ill lose all freakin day. Im loving our bench for next year. Even more so if UPS comes back.
Bring Shannon back and then ship out Sasha’s expiring & Luke’s retiring contracts for another piece to the bench. 10 million in expiring contracts is good for something!!!

"Lebron has the ball, dribbles down the court, splitting the Lakers defenders with 5 seconds left on the clock with the game on the line in the 2011 NBA Finals Game 7! Lebron pulls up from deep, in Kobe's face and drains the three pointer! HEAT WIN HEAT WIN!!! 89-88!!!!!
...BEEP BEEP BEEP...BEEP BEEP BEEP...
Then Lebron's alarm goes off and he wakes up and goes downstairs to eat a delicious breakfast made by his mom and Delonte West."

Hollinger isn't loyal to his statistics
he’s loyal to ESPN
"Love me or hate me; it's one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fade-away, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons." - Kobe Bryant
and we all know who ESPN is loyal to...

But it's okay. Hollinger is a loser in every offseason

ESPN is just filled with tools
Not to mention you have to pay the insider to get full access to content. Not that I want to
It's a 2 point Sacramento lead. We're down to 7 seconds. Bryant putting a move on Christie. Rebound O'Neal. Came up short. Horry for the win. Pretty sure we all know how it ends.
