Kinda weird question

I know this is a basketball blog, but I have a NFL question. I trust your fanhood here, since we agree on Laker fanhood.

I moved to the US a couple years ago & didn’t know much about football. Then I started to get the hang of it & kinda liked it. But i can’t really enjoy watching without rooting for a  specific team. So i thought it’d be fun to run a quick vote to see which team I should  root for.
one bit of info: i live in NYC, so I’m kinda leaning towards either the Giants or Jets but not necessarily, because as you see I have been rooting for the Lakers long before I moved to the US.

Star-divide

So, which NFL team would you persuade me to root for?

I know, i asked this question before in the Farmar report card, but it was kinda dead by the time I asked it

Lol

One should determine a favorite team based on their personal preferences, not those of others, in my opinion. If you want a perennial powerhouse, pick the Colts or Patriots. :D

Just because you throw someone a pass, and they score, it doesn't mean you made them a better player.

Why does it matter if the team sucks? Where’s the fun in rooting for a team just because they’re the best? I mean, root for the Colts and you might as well root for the companies that put Peyton Manning in their commercials.

Keep rooting for teams and once LA gets a team (pls not the Raiders)

then you can commit to it and become and LA fan all around.

"That means no more coming into camp fat and out of shape, when your team is relying on your leadership on and off the court. It also means no more blaming others for our team's failure, or blaming staff members for not overdramatizing your injuries so that you avoid blame for your lack of conditioning. …ugh… I hate both the Jets and Giants…….

I was in the same position as you given LA doesn’t have a football team, I finally just chose the Chargers because I went to college in San Diego. They play a really entertaining style of football even if they aren’t always winning. The Jets and Giants are far to boring for my liking….

If you are on the east coast, I would go with the Philadelphia Eagles, they too are also a very entertaining, consistently in the playoff mix…. plus you get the added bonus of hating the Giants and Cowboys, two very annoying over-rated franchises.

There are several ways to make your initial selection of a team to root for

I like the New York option for several reasons. First, because New York is also home to the Yankees and Knicks — two teams which, like them or not, either currently are or have often been in the past very similar to the Lakers. That is, big markets, frequent winners, willing to pay to win, and hated for it. Second, because (in large part because of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry) New York hates Boston… and as Lakers fans, that’s something we take seriously. In choosing between New York teams, you might consider trying to get a sense of which team and/or team’s fanbase is more passionate in its hatred of the loathsome city of Boston and all of its vile sports franchises. Whichever team and/or fanbase hates them more, go with that one.

New York teams provide you with two good reasons to pledge your loyalty to them: Local ties, and common rooting interests with your already existing sports loyalties. If you’re not going to make your selection based on one or both of those reasons, I can think of two other valid reasons: (1) one more more players that you particularly appreciate, which is how many people have become Lakers fans over the years (Magic, Shaq, Kobe, etc.); or (2) the quality of the franchise itself, by which I mean, your appraisal of management, their desire to win and willingness to bankroll said desire, their ability to make smart decisions and effectively manage their organization (to use basketball examples, think Lakers or Thunder or Spurs versus Isaiah Thomas era Knicks or current T-Wolves). Honestly, the latter may be the most genuine, mature, and intelligent reason to choose any franchise, in a context in which no other factors appear to affect your loyalties.

Of course, the other option is to simply throw your lot in with a team that is winning right now, and looks likely to contend for the foreseeable future. It’s my least favorite option, as it’s fairly short-sighted. Such an approach might have led a 60s-era basketball fan with no attachments to become a fan of the Celtics, only to suffer half a century of irrelevance, with only an all-too-brief respite from such misery during the Bird years (and even that mitigated by the greater overall success your hated rivals, the Lakers, were experiencing). Or it might have led someone in your shoes three years ago to back the “Big Three” Celtics, certain that they would dominate for years… only to realize this year that they were a one-and-done team. It’s also just a fairly shallow way of approaching things.

That said, it is, as it has always been, my opinion that there is no such thing as a wrong reason to pledge loyalty, as a fan, to any team — so long as your loyalty to that team remains true through thick and thin, regardless of how they fare down the road. As such, I don’t consider a bandwagon fan to be one who becomes a fan of a team because they are winning. By my definition, a bandwagon fan is someone who abandons another team that is not winning in favor of one that is (there’s a huge difference — you’re coming at this with no previous football loyalties, whereas new Heat fans who used to root for other teams are betraying old loyalties simply because their new favorite team will win more, or is more popular), or one who becomes a fan of a team when they are doing well, only to bail when they later struggle… and then to return when “their” team once again returns to relevance. Those are bandwagon fans — not the guy who forms his initial loyalties on the basis of current success, but then stays true to the team he has become a fan of through thick and thin.

Those would be the guidelines I would use for selecting an NFL franchise to back. Hope it helps.

i honestly wouldn't pick a team right now if i was you

I had the same problem when I lived abroad for a while and everyone was watching soccer. I got really into the game passion wise even though I didn’t know much knowledge wise. I ended up rooting for Manchester United just because the people teaching me the sport and the majority of the guys on the team I played on were United fans. Later when I learned more about the sport, I realized that I liked some other teams too, but couldn’t change teams! I would probably pick a few teams I like right now, then learn more about the sport and kind of wait a while until you know more about the sport. I think a team will kind of pick itself at some point, then just take it from there!!! You don’t want to pick one now and then want to change later.
