Defensive rating

So i was over at Pounding the Rock (spurs blog) and they had this FanPost about Defensive Stoppers in NBA. Obviously, most of the popular defenders were popped up and they used On/Off court defensive rating differentials to show where they stand. Well first of all I dont know how that Rating works up, and if some one can explain that I would appreciate it. Anyhow, this was the list provided by the fans there with the numbers (note: the more negative means the better the defender) :

Ariza: 0.239
Hill:1.022
Battier: -1.478
Artest: -4.656
Bell: N/A
Posey: 0.31
Jackson: 3.245
Wallace: -0.233
Deng: -2.927
Kobe: -3.563
Rondo: -1.081
Parker: -0.767 (Not bad!)
Manu: 0.832
Butler: -1.764
Jones: 0.761
Barnes: -1.185
Jefferson: -2.471 (wow!)
Lebron: -1.128
Bogans: 1.371
Udoka: -3.703
Temple: -2.439 (limited minutes)
Chilai: -5 (definitely worth kneeling before)   (I am guessing this guy is just a commenter and its an inside joke?)

What the numbers (and again i dont know how that number was calculated) show is that Kobe is a really good defender (we already knew) and LeBron is no where close to be considered an elite defender.

i got it off Spurs blog

the link for the post is: http://www.poundingtherock.com/2010/7/23/1585170/defensive-stoppers-a-myth

the person who calculated it said:

I downloaded the data from basketbalvalue.com and made the calculations manually for On/Off court defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions). The reason you dont see Sefolosha is because Chilai did not mention him initially, I just went with his list.

Sefo: 2.808 completely against the common assessment of his defense by mostly everyone.

I don’t know how these numbers were reached but compared to the rest of the people, Artest’s -4.656 is God-like. Whatever it is, it’s nice to see a way to measure good defense in a number.

Can you say, "lockdown?"

Kobe+Artest+Barnes= -10

and they’re only the wing defenders. We still have Gasol, Bynum, Odom, and Manhood Knowledge in the back ready to erase any mistakes…

Everything seems to be in order...

except that I’d expect Battier to be much higher. He’s a beast on defense.

by JustRuntheOffense on Jul 25, 2010 2:04 PM PDT reply actions

If these numbers are calculated the way I think they are...

whereas it is a comparative differential of the team defense when the specific player is on the court as compared to when they are not on the court (and the sub is in for them)….

I would think more than anything it measures the drop-off in defense of the sub vs. starter more than anything else (and thus it says more about the sub’s defense capability more than anything else).

For example as a hypothetical, pretend Artest has 100% the exact same defense this upcoming year as compared to this past year in all aspects including intensity, spacing, minutes, intelligence, stats, etc (I know this isn’t possible, its just a hypothetical to understand the numbers above). Now this upcoming 2009-2010 year I expect Artest’s numbers calculated above to be MUCH worse than -4.656 because when he comes off the court, the team defense won’t suffer nearly as much since Barnes is a strong defender and although the drop off will be there, it will be a MUCH less dramatic of a drop off compared to 2008-2009 when the subs for Artest were Walton, Morrison, and short out-of-place guards.

I haven’t read the Spurs post so I am not sure if I am understanding it correctly, so please correct me if I am wrong.

Thus, I postulate that Artest’s numbers above were “God-like” in 2008-2009 as a result of AMMO’s and the rest of the bench’s suckiness on defense when Artest came out of the game.

by neokoros on Jul 25, 2010 2:11 PM PDT reply actions

finally, a good use for AMMO

AMMO should use this to raise his trade value =)

Yeah, on/off +/- numbers are very dependent

On 1) how good your team defense is 2) how good the guy behind him is defensively.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Jul 25, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not sure, but I think these scores are relative

Meaning that, for instance, if the team defends better with Artest in than with Barnes in, then Artest should have a better rating than Barnes. So even if Barnes has a good rating, Artest’s should be even better, all other things remaining equal.

Of course, most of the time, all other things don’t remain equal. There are equations that are used to account for many of them, the details of which are beyond the scope of this comment. :)

by Brian Tung on Jul 25, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Artest will definately have a better number than Barnes

But Artest’s numbers above will be affected just as much by Barnes play when Artest is on the bench as by Artest’s own play himself (since it compares the defense when the player is on the court compared to when the sub is in).

Conversely, Barnes number above will be affected by Artest’s play when Barnes is on the bench so Barnes number will drop this coming year since his defensive isn’t as strong as Ron’s.

Actually, if I understand it correctly, if there is primarily one exclusive sub for one position/player, one of the two players will have a negative number and the other will have have to have a positive number. They can’t both have “good numbers” as calculated from this post.

—- The reason is because although the defense may overall suffer (a bit) when Artest comes out and is replaced by Barnes (thus giving Ron a decent negative number), when Barnes sits on the bench (before and after Artest’s play) the defense can’t also be suffering overall again with Barnes (and give Barnes a decent negative number as well)… since Ron will be playing. … (The Lakers can’t be more both more efficient defensively when Ron plays vs when he is out and Barnes is in and also more efficient defensively when Banes plays vs when he is out and Artest is in)

From the Spurs blog post, there doesn’t seem to be any compensation to help fix the numbers to prevent it from just being a defensive efficiency number of the starter vs. the bench that comes in for him

by neokoros on Jul 25, 2010 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, you are incorrect

I calculated Ammo’s defensive on/off rating and he’s actually at -50,000. Basically every time he’s on the court the Lakers are destroying their opponent by at least 10 points. Something to do with “garbage time”.

haha, I remember the Lakers bench never could keep a lead last year no matter how seemingly big

and Kobe would need to come back in after expecting to be done for the game.

I’m glad that won’t be a problem this year, especially to give Kobe the rest.

As long as AMMO doesn’t end up in Miami or Boston, we won’t have to worry about the invisible mind assassin giving us payback. The only reason he has to stay on the bench is because it is only in sitting position that can his meditation reak havok upon opposing teams. He is Jackson’s Cerebro Machine.

The scary thing about the Lakers is that between Ron and Barnes, one of them will be on the floor at all times. Throw in the fact that Kobe is a solid perimeter defender and you have the best perimeter defense in the NBA. With Pau, Drew, LO and some manhood knowledge down low that makes the best overall defense in the NBA by far.

Lakers are going to be a nightmare for opposing perimeter players

Ron, Barnes, Kobe, and Sasha (its debatable whether his overall defensive ability is good, but it is not debatable that he is an extremely pesky defender that gets under the skin of his guy and can drive them nuts).

I can see the playoffs getting pretty really rough on the perimeter with a handful boat-full of techs. (read: exciting and good for the lakers)

Daryl Morey is GM of the Rockets

and he’s famous for using every type of stat to measure a player’s effect on the court. The Rockets have their own internal system of evaluating data. They also form many of their offensive and defensive strategies on the data.

It goes beyond efficiency, they even measure stuff like which spots on the floor Kobe shoots worst from, Battier gets the data, and tries to funnel him to those spots.

This is a long article, but it will explain some of these points better and is also a phenomenal read and a must-read for any basketball/ sports fan.

One more thing that might suck for Sefo is that he might be the best defender on his team. Lets say that he is always covering the most dynamic scorer of the opposing team, say against LAL Kobe and he shadows him through the game (he goes to the bench when Kobe does) then his number might suck because he might have the most difficult assignment.

It means that

when Sefo is on the floor he guards Kobe giving him the most difficult assignment on the floor. When Kobe leaves the floor, Sefo leaves the floor. This means the dropoff isn’t as relevant as if another player was guarding Kobe when Sefo wasn’t on the floor. Was that clear? I tried to do my best.

SSR: If you come in here just trying to stir up trouble, making comments to try to bait or incite, or making generally ridiculous statements along the lines of "Kobe’s worthless," you will be ignored. If you keep it up for no reason, you will be made to leave.

Also:

From the rules:

Thou shalt respect the wishes of the admins and moderators
This is more of a catch-all than an actual rule, because it would be impossible to list out every type of negative scenario we wish to avoid. Sufficed to say, if one of our fine authors or moderators ask you to do something, like say drop an argument that’s going nowhere, or stay away from using a certain phrase, just do it.

Wondahbap told him to stop repeating the same point incessantly, and instead of following this rule, he opted to imply Wondah was a facist.

Also, did he really say that first quote? LOL. He obviously never read the rules.

I got into a little spat with him over at the heat blog cause he accused the mods over here of being “cowards” for banning him and told me this in one of his comments to justify the garbage he posted over here.

Yeah, my bad you are right NexcNguy. He is somewhat out of line. But said no profanity, although he can be classified as a troll.

I see i didn’t read his comment well, But then again… he has a point since not all of us are stat buffs here, hence, it’s not offensive. We just love this team, And for his love for stats, I see why this “Huevonkiller” is a Heat fan. lol. (I heard someone say he was a Heat fan btw)

Guess who of?

Profanity is allowed here. He didn’t do anything constituting a ban on that account, but when Dex went to give him a warning for trolling/generalising about a fanbase repeatedly; he noticed he possessed the same IP as a troll banned a week or so ago for multiple infractions, hence the ban was automatic.

just to clarify why he deserved to get banned

It wasn’t just that he kept pushing stats as part of his argument, it was that he droned on and on, mindlessly, pointlessly, posting the same thing. One a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 crossing the line, he was in the 40s when mods gave him the boot.

what do these numbers mean?

little confused

Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?

by shaqfor3 on Jul 25, 2010 3:40 PM PDT reply actions

don't have time to take a close look

But I think that what they represent are differences in opponent scoring per 100 possessions with the player on the court as compared with off the court. So, for instance, suppose that opponents score 105 points per 100 possessions with Kobe on the court, but they score 108 points per 100 possessions with Kobe off the court. Kobe would then have a defensive rating, in these units, of -3. (As the original poster mentioned, negative is better, positive is worse.)

The question then arises of whether these numbers are adjusted for teammates and opposing players. This can be done using some kind of linear regression. (There are theoretical issues with doing so, but the statistical engineering is sound.) If they are, then the comment I made above about Artest as compared with Barnes holds; if they aren’t, then it doesn’t, necessarily.
