Could be he's seeing the

bad publicity LeBron is getting and he realizes he has to distance himself from LRMR right now. Word is LRMR was trying for a long time to woo Paul. Once they finally did, everything went to shit. Why didn’t we hear CP3 denying it when it was first reported he was going w/ them? Most likely because he was and now he’s having second thoughts.

Interesting comment from NYTimes' Off the Dribble
The Lakers have evolved into a defensive team with a strong frontcourt. The Heat in contrast strike me as a team that could really thrive with an open-court, Showtime-type of play. Next season could be like the 80s, except the Heat are like the Lakers, and the Lakers are like the Celtics. Ironic, but should be fun to watch!

That is interesting

Something I was considering (although not the Heat-Lakers/Lakers-Celtics spin). The Lakers played awesome defense last season, and have added another front court defender and some old guy that swats/gets dunked on.

I’m very interested to see how Miami’s offense runs during the season. With Wayde and Lebron running the floor it could be very exciting. Then again, ask Phoenix how well high-scoring offenses with low defense do in the playoffs.

Remember! Running back to swat a guard’s dunk does not = great defense.

Thing is

except for last season, the Lakers had the best offense (or one of…not just statistically. I felt it was better than the Suns or whomever due to diversity and post players) and could easily return to form after a year of experience with Ron and Andrew starting. The question is will the HEat be able to play the defense the Lakers or Celtics can?

Former NBA guard Wally Szczerbiak, James’ former teammate, told Sirius XM Radio that a Wade/James pairing is ``not going to work. No way. When Wade’s dribbling the ball up top, calling for a high pick-and-roll, and LeBron’s standing in the corner, no one’s going to guard LeBron. He’s not a floor spacer. He’s not a guy you have to pay attention to at the three-point line. He needs the ball in his hands . . . and there’s only one basketball. As an opposing player, I would be so motivated to kick these guys’ butts.’’

I liked the Caracter Piece

Will be pulling for him. Don’t know what he’ll do in Forum gold, but maybe even Bynum will take him under his wing, having just gone through the process, growing the both of them.

"...where they don't play with a shot clock." - C. Sager

by kv on Jul 25, 2010 1:14 PM PDT reply actions

It'll be akward though, maybe, because Bynum is younger and Caracter is older.

But he has been in the league so Caracter will put that aside since he has matured greatly. Caracter will be a force in the NBA. Not an All-Star but a great role player like Big Baby. Hopefully Jackson doesn’t throw this opportunity away. He is a great coach but I don’t like his tendency to overlook rookies even if they are talented. A big example is by how he starts Fisher and favors him, If I were a coach it’s all about preformance, If you are sucking I will pull you out of the game for a long time.
This is a big glaring hole in the regular season. In the playoffs Fish is another beast as I have noticed and sucking doesn’t apply in the playoffs, Finals for him. But Phil should limit him greatly in the reg. season, and by that I mean make him come off the bench or just let him play 20-25 min a game.

by Starburst. on Jul 25, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he hates rookies. He doesn’t want to waste his time on them, like a Kung-fu monk who makes the acolyte sit on the temple steps for a year. Bynum talks with a kind of older guy tone sometimes, and I can see him enjoying the next young dude in line (even if he is younger). It will help that Bynum will be swatting all of Caracter’s shots in practice, I assume.

I see the Big Baby body type, but BB has a motor like nobody, and Caracter is not that. Not sure who he is, but I agree there is a place for him in the league as long as he keeps moving forward and doesn’t end up on the Clippers or Atlanta.

Totally agree with limited Fish in the regular season, want to see him steering the bench crew, keeping them settled. Let Blake learn the triangle with Kobe, and sit there with wide open threes.

wow. That is pretty freaky, did not realize their proximity. They MUST have encountered each other:

You have this interesting season preview from the Star Ledger:

1-Joakim Noah, Lawrenceville: The 6-10 senior transfer from New York’s Poly Prep comes off an outstanding summer. He has thickened up considerably since last season, has developed much more confidence with the ball in his hands and more desire to go after it when it’s not. Noah has committed to Florida.

2-Derrick Caracter, Scotch Plains-Fanwood: The 6-8 sophomore created a stir last season with dominating play in his first varsity games for St. Patrick’s. But he ended up missing 13 games because of academic suspension and transferred in the spring to Scotch Plains. He has all the tools to become one of the state’s best big men ever — if that’s what he wants.

7-Andrew Bynum, St. Joseph’s (Met.): The Greater Middlesex Conference doesn’t know this 6-10 junior yet, as he transferred from Solebury Prep in Pennsylvania. It will soon discover that he works hard off the glass and often delivers.

It would be a great signing for the Bulls.

I say they give everyone in the East huge problems. They just might be a Top 2-3 seed this season. I think Rose is ready to make The Leap, Noah will be KG-lite under Thibs, Boozer provides them with post scoring and rebounding (plus no Lakers!), and they got a decent defender and cutter in Brewer. T-Mac should be able to fit in and keep defense honest. He’s lost a lot, but what he can still do will help Bulls. Deng needs to show up though.

Deng wasn't bad last year

Although that was a bit hard to see given Chicago’s offensive woes. If he continues to shoot the three as well as he did last year, that will help this offense out significantly.

Speaking of Caracter Im wondering if someone can clear something up for me

The Lakers drafter Caracter and Ebanks right? Does that mean that they can still sign with any team that that player wants to regardless of who drafted him? I have heard/read that two other teams want Caracter. Can they offer him more money than the Lakers can?

Only the Lakers can sign him right now

The only way another team can get him is if the Lakers don’t offer him a contract at all or if they do and they cut him during training camp.

Or if some overseas team offers him more than the minimum the Lakers are offering, he can go there right now, but the Lakers would still hold his NBA rights if he ever wanted to come back.

No, we have their rights, right now.

But if we don’t sign them by the time training camp starts they are free to go to another team, unless there is a specific rookie signing deadline. We can also sign them and send them to the D-league so they get playing time and a chance to enhance their skills.
A special case would be this: if Caracter/agent says: I want to go to the Nuggets, I’ve been a fan since birth (lie, they have guaranteed him play time) I don’t want to play for you(Lakers), as he is an idiot if he does) then the Lakers will be appalled by his crappy attitude and let him go.

The way it works is like this:

43. What if the team and their drafted player can’t agree to a contract? What options does the player have? How long does the team keep his draft rights?

The player’s options are limited. What happens depends on a number of factors:

    * If the player is already under contract to, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player’s draft rights for one year after the player’s obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in the team’s team salary during the regular season while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.

    […]

    * For all other players, the team retains the player’s draft rights until the date of the next draft.

In any of the above cases, if the team does not sign the player in the allotted time, the player can enter the next draft. If the team that selects the player in the next draft doesn’t sign him either, he becomes a rookie free agent.

[Irrelevant parts omitted]

per Larry Coon’s CBA FAQ.

If the Lakers don’t offer a contract to, for example, Ebanks, then the Lakers retain the rights to Ebanks for at least one year, and maybe longer if he signs with a non-NBA team. Just to reiterate what’s in the quote above, signing with a non-NBA team stops the clock on the one year window in which the Lakers own his rights, and the clock doesn’t start again until the non-NBA contract expires. As I understand it, the only way to shorten the year the Lakers own the rights to Ebanks is if the Lakers sign Ebanks to a contract, but then waive him at some point. If no team picks him up off the waiver wire, which would effectively transfer the contract he signed with the Lakers to that new team, he will become a free agent, able to sign with any NBA team.

by Darkemans on Jul 26, 2010 6:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, forgot to mention that the Lakers could of course renounce the rights,

which would make Ebanks in the example above a free agent instantly.

So he’s beneficial for that offense given that they have to balance so many offensive black holes. Then again, if they’re really buying into the notion that Mayo will run the point then they may be interested in Brown to complement him.

TAO's alright

We went there two years ago for a friend’s birthday.

The only downside to the club (though very posh and swanky) was that you had to pay to sit down. Otherwise, you had to stand all night long.

LBJ was probably mesmerized by their dancers. They have two girls lounging in bras and undies on these chaises flanking every doorway in the club. And the girls would be sitting on each other “massaging” the other girl.

I'm guessing that's where all the local bandwagon fans were before the Heat became contenders again~

Not a bad alternative to a 15 win season

How could I NOT be tempted to use that………

"Lebron has the ball, dribbles down the court, splitting the Lakers defenders with 5 seconds left on the clock with the game on the line in the 2011 NBA Finals Game 7! Lebron pulls up from deep, in Kobe's face and drains the three pointer! HEAT WIN HEAT WIN!!! 89-88!!!!!

...BEEP BEEP BEEP...BEEP BEEP BEEP...

Then Lebron's alarm goes off and he wakes up and goes downstairs to eat a delicious breakfast made by his mom and Delonte West."

Still not loving the Barnes move...

He’s gonna contribute for us, I don’t think there’s any doubt, but he takes time away from Devin Ebanks… What little time Ebanks had, that is…

by angelofdeath on Jul 25, 2010 10:17 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, he does

but the Lakers are very much a “win now” team. The strategic goal is to max out the number of titles they win while Kobe is in his prime. That takes precedence over PT for a guy like Ebanks, who in any event will get to play in the D League.

Gem of a post on Wilt.

If Wilt doesn’t deserve to be in the discussion for GOAT for leading the league in assists as a Center (all while leading the league in rebounding and scoring year in and year out) plus that ridiculous 70+ % shooting percentage his final year in the league, I don’t know what the GOAT label is.

by JustRuntheOffense on Jul 25, 2010 11:39 PM PDT reply actions

That's the thing, the GOAT label is a figment of our individual imaginations

and depends on who you ask, you’ll get different answers.

I personally don’t think there should be a GOAT, but rather, a GOAT short list for debating purposes.

Yeah, but he was a headcase for nearly his entire career

Until Bill Sharman got him to care about defense and what other players wanted. He never had the same drive that inspired other teammates like Jordan for instance. Also, his numbers were hugely inflated by the incredibly fast pace of the game at the time and the fact that there really wasn’t anyone who could guard him on the interior besides Russell.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

The post is quoting a book written by WILT CHAMBERLAIN. i smell bias.

Elgin Baylor only played defense to pass the time between shots? the dude played with Elgin for what is basically the last two seasons of Elgin’s career. ALso, keep in mind there were about 8 teams in teh 60’s. Also, his avgs per 36 min is not as impressive.

by heinzketchup on Jul 26, 2010 3:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Also worth noting...

That there were no advanced training methods, and little or no gymwork. No focusing on technique, no modern training at all. It’s altogether possible that Wilt could have been even BETTER if he were around later…

The same applies to his competition, though.

One of the most common arguments brought against players of that era is lesser competition. To that I argue that the talent was less diluted due to less teams.

First of all...

…I am a Miami Heat fan. Always will be. But what the Lakers are doing this off-season is downright scary. LA will be Miami’s only challenge in 2010-2011. Mark my words, the LA-Miami rivalry is on! And it’s going to be the best thing the NBA has seen since the Boston-LA era in the 80’s. Good luck next season, Laker fans. You have the only other team in the league worthy of my respect. You have Kobe (the best player in the world.) But we have the second and third best!!! Go Heat!!!

It might take a while before the word rivalry can be thrown around and it might take more than one season before it can be compared to the Lakers vs Celtics. But in 2010-2011 it will be a battle if both teams face each other.

btw…I like that you referred to Lebron as 2nd best. Well at least I think you are referring to him and not Wade.
