Rough Cut 7/24 - So, about this LeBron fella we've heard so much about...

GOTCHA!!

Seriously, I was looking at the pic of Matt Barnes on The Credits and noticed his many tattoos and got to thinking about NBA players and their tattoos. So many have them, and while some are nice, some of them are just, shall we say, interesting.

There's no need to go into the history of tattoos, but suffice to say that for decades only a certain demographic had them. Aside from people in certain tribal areas of the world, those folks were either in the military, in biker gangs or in prison (sometimes they were all the same person!). But sometime in the 70s, tattoos began moving into the general population, and more "regular people" started getting inked, including a fair number of women. I think the first woman I saw with a tattoo was Cher. In the intervening years, more and more women have taken to inking themselves, some on par with many men. I mean, has anyone seen Kat Von Dee lately? I don't think she has an inch of uninked skin left. If she does, it's somewhere not visible to the public.

At any rate, some NBA players have so many tattoos you can't see their skin either. Why is that? I know some of the tats have special meaning, but do all of them mean something, really, or do they get them just to get them? Some examples:

No explanation necessary.

The above is on Gilbert Arenas' hand; he had a prison tat before he went to prison. Do you see the period after "change" on his trigger index finger? I think the artist was dyslexic.

This one is now ours.

I will go on record and say that, while I am not a huge fan of tattoos, I have honestly considered getting one. I know what I'd want and exactly where I'd put it, but I just can't bring myself to do it, although it could be very helpful if my family ever had to identify my body for some reason. I'm of the opinion that if you are going to get a tattoo, pick the name(s) of your parents or your children because those are the only people in your life who never change. Do not get the name of the girl/guy you married or were engaged to. Ask Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie how that worked out.

So, what do you guys think of tattoos, on NBA players and other folks? Do you like or dislike them? Do you have them? If you don't have one, would you get one? Where would you put it? Can I possibly ask any more questions? Feel free to post your own photos. Now start talking!

I'm not a tattoo person

Myself. But they can work on others I guess.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

there are really only 2 types of NBA players in this world

those with neck tattoos and those without. neck tattoo guys are obviously the most feared in the NBA, as they have neck tattoos. if a neck tattoo guy was coming at me i would probably jump off of a cliff just to avoid his neck tattoo prowess.

I love tattoos

In general, I love them. Perhaps it’s because of the people I grow up around and the environment I lived in.

(Although there are just some people, who should never get tattoos or fuckin get like really stupid ones like a bf/gf’s name, or dicks or whatever else people think up when they’re intoxicated).

I really would love to get one done next summer. I have plans for many =) but they are all because of sentimental reasons or they mean a lot to me. I don’t like the idea of getting tattoos, spur of the moment. I’m one who plans and puts a lot of thought into a permanent drawing.

women with tattoos are sexy

but not exactly the traditional type. I think it says a lot about a person and their personality. My co-worker (female) is the most professional and reserved person that I have worked with. One day she wore casual clothes on and I could see she had a colored tattoo that ran from her shoulder all through out her left side. I got caught off guard because she doesnt seem like the type of person who was daring enough to do that.

I think LeBron's tattoos are correct advertising.

And that Laker fans are some of the most biased fans I’ve ever seen.

Be honest, you know Kobe’s not better than even Shaq or Duncan.

He’s a nice little player, Hakeem also has two Finals MVPs. To be GOAT you need LeBron’s numbers, and rings. Which are probably coming.

tattoos are cool

but what i kinda dislike is how the non asian people have these asian characters on their arms or legs sometimes. There was this one time i saw a lady with the tattoo “love” in chinese, and that tattoo was completely written wrong (there was a stroke or 2 missing, which makes it a completely different word or not a word at all). For all i know, if i was the tattoo person, i could’ve tattooed “idiot” on their leg or arm and claimed it meant “love” or “peace” or “harmony”

by LakerUNLTD on Jul 26, 2010 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

well i guess i shouldn't have worded it like that

i guess what i should’ve said is how i dislike how some people get the tattoo without knowing what it means. people will tell me they got a tattoo and they’ll tell me the meaning of it and that’s not what it means! And where i live, most of the people who get those kind of tattoos are not the asian people, so that resulted in me typing out “non asian.” apologies about that.
