Mark my words: This will be the single greatest NBA season you have ever witnessed.

The Lakers have been in the Finals the past 3 seasons. They are back to back champions, primed to 3-peat.

The Celtics were in the Finals 2 out of 3 seasons with 1 championship. Getting old, but still there.

Orlando is still a solid team worthy of making the Finals like in 2009.

The Miami Heat became juggernauts overnight. Anything less than the Finals will be a disappointment to them.

Then there's always the competitive 'run for your money' teams like the Mavs, Nuggets, Bulls, Spurs, Blazers, Hawks, Thunder...better luck next year guys (or perhaps in 5 years).

...With all that said, I've come to the conclusion that through this 3 year competition of trying to build the ultimate 'Superteam', these NBA executives intentionally/unintentionally just created a monster never before seen in NBA History. We are about to witness the single greatest team of all time.

The 2010-2011 Los Angeles Lakers.

Lets look at the situation:

3-Peats are really extraordinary. They are so difficult to accomplish considering you have to win 2 championships in a row to get to that point and then be HIGHLY motivated to get that 3rd..and yet, here we are, back to back champions..going for a 3rd straight.

Kobe Bryant is on fire. He has 5 championships. 1 more to go to tie the 'G.O.A.T'. He knows it, he wants it. Still in his prime and armed with the deepest, most talented team he's ever played with (Thanks to Mitch). He is motivated to complete his 2nd 3-peat, tie Jordan, and still be only 33 yrs old, with 3-5 years left at the top of his game. We all know what happens when Black Mamba is motivated.

Phil Jackson will be coaching his final season in what has been a legendary career. Win or lose, This will be it for him. Phil knows it, Kobe knows it, you know that Kobe and Phil will make sure everyone on the team knows it, and doesn't forget it. Not even for a moment. 4 - 3peats in a single career? Are you kidding me? Phil wants this, or else he would've retired already. Kobe wants this for Phil, and wants his own 2nd 3-peat. Mitch wants this for Lakers History, and of-course for Phil.

There is no way the Lakers 3-peat with the same roster of last year, not with all the other teams gunning for them. So what does Mitch Kupchak do? He brings in the talent needed to GUARANTEE the Lakers 3-peat this year.

He gets Phil back, resigns Fisher, and brings in Blake, Barnes, Ratliff to upgrade the weak bench (which was still good enough to win the past 2 years). Can you say DEFENSE? Do you think he's trying to send some time of message to oh, I don't know...DEFEND the Championship at all costs?!?!

This is the best starting lineup and bench I've ever seen, on any of the previous championships from the most dominate franchise in the past decade.

Not only are the Lakers going to 3-peat (barring major injuries ofcourse), but they will beat the 72-10 regular season record and give Phil the ultimate retirement present, the 'cherry on top'...The Greatest Team ever.

I don't think they're aiming for 72

We’ve learned that well-rested teams do better in the playoffs.

Its not about 'aiming for 72'

I just think they are good enough to do it. The starting lineup doesnt have to be in for 40+ mins each night anymore. The 2nd unit is better defensively so they can sustain leads a lot better.

Throw in the matchup problems of our front court and there arent many teams out there that will be able to keep up.

The Lakers probably won't dominate the regular season.

They like to take it easy in the regular season and give just enough effort to get the 1 seed.

Of course, now that the bench is a starting line-up that most teams would be satisfied with, you guys will win all kinds of game even when the starters are playing low minutes. It should be interesting.

Usually yes..

They are sluggish, lose stupid games against crappy teams..but somehow end up being top seed..I think next year will be different.

no it won't. fans said the same thing last year. When are we gonna learn that the lakers are who they are

whether they win 50, 60, 70 they know it doesn’t matter. They just need to win 16 when the real season starts

Another thing worth mentioning...

It would be banner #17 for the Lakers, tying the Celtics for the most all-time.

dang you are really hyping us

thought I highly doubt we will win 72 games. An 82 game season takes heavy wear and tear on a team and players have to be on their guard every game. We have seen the Lakers show either fatigue or suddenly here or there get beat by a weaker opponent cause of a lack of cohesion on offense or maybe effort. Its not gonna happen and the Heat arent gonna win 72 either. I remember in 2009, the Celtics came to LA 27-2 for the Christmas game which at the time was on pace to tie or beat the Bull’s record. But after losing that game, things kinda tailed for them with Garnett getting injured, though they still won 62 games.

yea thats why I said barring injuries

If we have a somewhat healthy year and get a few lucky breaks in close games, I think its very do-able.

I always had the mentality that at some point in history, an NBA team should be able to go undefeated..as ludicrous as that sounds. If you go into every single game with a cut-throat mentality, nobody can stop you.

damn i never thought of it as this way

and i never realized that everyone mitch has signed is so much of a defensive upgrade…

barnes great defender blake way better then farmar and ratliff is D only…

this is adding to a team that when motivated to play D as you saw in the last 2 games of the finals… is the best defensive team in the league,,,

what we give up to the celtics… 72 and 79 points…? now are D will be even better

im ok as long as we get the 1 seed(at least in the west)

and with 60 wins, im satisfied

I think there’s too much parity in the NBA these days for a team to win 72.

Did you actually see Powell or Mbenga initiate the triangle last year? or Shannon Brown? lol. Steve Blake would have to get acclimated to it, but most think it should be an easy transition, as he’s a smart PG with the proper skillset.

Can't wait for the season to start

Lakers are a little old, but a great team that matches up with anybody. I’ve had baseball season keep me occupied, but I still miss basketball and can’t wait for it to start up again.

Shannon Brown may come back and Luke Walton may be lost for the year, so the roster may be a little bit different heading into the season. Still solid though.

Honestly, with the Heat taking a paycut...

They picked up two nice players, after the big three. I think they clearly have the best roster.

And this time no lame Mo to screw it up. :]

by huevonkiller on Jul 25, 2010 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

There is a major drop of in their talent. After the 3 stars, they have no dirty work players

A big reason why Bostons Big 3 worked is because their roster was balanced. Who is going to play James Posey for Miami?

But your point still stands. Not to mention, Pierce and Allen complimented each other in that one worked best off-ball, one on-ball. Doesn’t work that way with Miami. Nor is Bosh a defensive force willing to sacrifice shots a la Garnett.

We said the EXACT same thing last offseason when we signed Artest. I’d be happy with a 60+ win season.

Nice.

That would definitely have been a great trio and they would have complemented each other so well. Magic has the ballhandling and passing to get Bird, the jumpshooter, open looks all day. At the time when he would have teamed up with those two, Jordan was the most athletic player in the NBA. You have the legendary point guard, the freak athlete and the amazing shooter. That would have been quite a sight to watch.

Since this thread is partially about the Heat and the Nazgul...

I figured it is a good place to post this gem by the user Bhukka on FTS…

he had a right to leave but after having the trust of the whole city
to the point where they built the team to his specifications
and to just leave without notifying the team earlier so they could maybe re organise the roster

its like if the big truck decepticon left the contructorbots just before a fight and the other four are like ‘WTF man? now we can’t change into the big transformer! and here come the autobots and now we’re fucked’

That deserves a boo in my books
and no more chalk dust for him.
