CP3+KB24=Lakers relevant for years to come - Chris Paul too compelling for the Lakers to pass on.
This morning I heard rumors about Chris Paul demanding a trade to a championship contender. The reigning World Champion Los Angeles Lakers were mentioned as a team CP3 would like to play for along with the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. Tonight I checked in with Silver Screen and Roll to find a thorough run down of the happenings of the last 24 hours from Ben R, complete with a stunning 320+ comments. This deal is one that Mitch Kupchak, Jerry Buss, and Phil Jackson must pull the trigger on.
Ben brings up the fact the Lakers play the triangle which does not feature the point guard. This is true all the way back to PJ’s days in Chicago. He also points out how the offense often bogs down very often, leaving Kobe to weave his magic with less than 5 on the 24. That has been my biggest pet peeve and a big reason Kobe wore down as the playoffs went on.
The importance of this potential acquisition cannot be measured by assists. The true measure of Chris Paul in a Lakers uniform would be how lively Kobe’s body is at year's end, as a Pasadena-based caller on ESPN radio/LA called it, for a potential "CP3peat". This year in the playoffs, particularly in two sub-par Finals games, it was painfully obvious that Kobe is wearing out. While the triangle has given the Lakers stability and direction on a team featuring Hall of Fame talent at the 2, there just aren’t enough easy opportunities for Kobe to take some possessions off because the lesser lights can’t shine with limited opportunities.
D-Fish, for all his last-second heroics and championship experience, does not have the handles to lead a fast break effectively. Ditto Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar. With Shaq dominating the paint and Kobe being the primary perimeter ball handler in the early "oughts", then Kobe setting the table for Pau and Bynum the last few years, there wasn’t a need for more than Ron Harper or Fish at the "point". Jordan Farmar just isn’t good enough to develop into a CP3 kind of talent. However, with AB proving to be consistently brittle, preventing him from becoming the dominating inside presence that the Lakers brass envisioned him to be, it’s time for Jim Buss to divorce himself from the man-love for ‘Drew. Chris Paul would infuse the Lakers with a new offensive energy that would add life to the thirty-something core crew while giving them a legitimate, young star for life after Kobe.
Wait a minute, with Paul running the point, and slowly assuming more of Kobe’s responsibilities, the ultra-fit Bryant could be in a Lakers uni until he’s 40! If only Gasol would learn how to shoot a sky-hook, this triumvirate could become a new millennium version the "Showtime Lakers".
I can envision Paul getting to the opponents’ free throw line via his own rebound or the outlet pass for his patented, floating one-hander or dishing off for the easy layup before PJ could put fingers in mouth and blow that blood-curdling whistle to call a play. That would be a trip where Kobe wasn’t leaned on/triple-teamed/hacked, Pau could get away with jogging up to half court conserving energy for offense or defense a la Kareem, while Artest and/or Lamar would take turns getting easy hoops on the wing opposite the Finals MVP. Steve Blake or D-Fish could spot up for open looks on the perimeter. There would be less pressure for Ebanks or Caracter should they be fortunate enough to play alongside him.
Paul made David West into a two-time All-Star for goodness sake. Just dream about how dominant the two-time defending Champion Lakers would become in the foreseeable future.
The Miami Heat with LeBron, D-Wade, and Chris Bosh called "check" for next year’s NBA Championship a few weeks back…if the Lakers could pull off the CP3 coup, they would play "checkmate".

My take on the situation. Some may agree, some will disagree.
So a lot of people talk about how the Lakers have dual 7-footers to protect the hoop against penetration. With Bynum gone, that disadvantage leaves, as well. But, many people are leaving out the fact that, along with Rondo, CP3 is the best PG defender in the league. You now have CP3, KB, and Artest defending the perimeter. 3 of the top defensive players in the game. For all of those times that Bynum and Co. bailed out Fisher when he got burned, CP3 will limit the opposition’s PG drives. In addition, Okafor’s not too bad on defense either. Yes, Chris Paul drove opposing defenses insane by himself and turned David West into an all-star. Now give him the best weapons in the game, how is anybody gonna stop the Lakers? A healthy Okafor is a reliable center. Not great, but goes out there, does his job. We won the last two finals with Bynum playing limited minutes. Then, people have the question of, can he fit in? It’s Chris Paul. Arguably the most skilled PG in the league, and he can shoot! Yeah, he was ball dominant in New Orleans, but he can adapt to the triangle. I don’t wanna hear the stuff about, what if he doesn’t return to superstar form? Bynum’s future has just as many, if not more question marks than CP3’s. So as my comment indicates, I would be in favor of shipping Bynum out for CP3. The positives outweigh the negatives for me.

Agree, obviously
PG was a major weakness, offensively and defensively, no disrespect to D-Fish whom I love. We’re on the same page on this.
Not Happening.
First of all Fish is our starting point guard. He’s earned that.
Second, we just signed Steve Blake. We’re set at the point guard spot.
Third, Phil runs the triangle. No way in hell can Chris Paul play in that system
Fourth, Good point guards are easier to find than solid big men. Last time i checked Bynum is a solid big men who puts up all star stats (when healthy)
Born purple and gold. Live purple and gold. Die purple and gold.
I know its not happening, but...
Fish earned the starting point guard spot. But Payton took it away before. CP3>Payton.
Chris Paul can’t play in the triangle? The most versatile PG in the league can’t play in the triangle? A PG who is unselfish and has perfected the elements of playing point guard in the NBA can’t adapt to a new system?
Fourth, I’m gonna get killed for this one, but we’ve won the past two finals with Bynum contributing a little over 20 mpg… Okafor has played all 82 games the past 3 seasons.

May not happen, but not 'cuz we're set at point.
If it doesn’t happen, it’s not because Fish and Blake are better than CP3. It will be because the Lakers brain trust didn’t want to part w/ Bynum. As for not being able to play in the triangle, are you saying one of the best PG’s in the league cannot adapt? I agree that it’s not ideal, but basketball is basketball. If Kobe can find his offense in the system, so can a great ball handler like Paul. Lastly, Bynum is damaged goods. If he can be unloaded for a potential Hall of Famer, I say pull the trigger. I don’t think anyone can say Bynum is a HOF caliber center. Plus, why didn’t he have surgery earlier in the summer so he can be farther along by the start of the season? Why delay the inevitable…he was supposed to have the surgery on the 18th, now the 28th….smacks of Shaq getting his surgery on “company time”.
Doctor's office wasn't available on the 18th, so he had to wait.
stay away from... golden state of mind - CoreyMaggette
Are you saying the doctor dictates the surgery?
Since when has the doctor told the Lakers and their team member to wait? I’m sure it was a case that the doctor was availiable earlier than the 18th, but ‘Drew wasn’t. If AB was intent on being ready ASAP, he’d have had the procedure instead of going to the World Cup. I didn’t know he was such a soccer afficionado.

Yeah
That’s what I questioned also. If he planned on having it on the 18th, then why did his plans get disrupted towards the set date? He should have been more prepared and knowledgeable about his situation.

Sweet 16
I'd like to know what Kobe says.
CP3 is tough as nails, was part of the Olympic team Kobe led two years back. The roster is never “done”. The events of this summer prevent the Lakers from thinking just because they won the last two years, with basically this team, that they will win again. Plus, Paul gives the Lakers young legs and skill at the point that we haven’t seen since Magic. I’m not saying he’s as good as Magic, who was a freak of a point, but I’d put CP3 up with any point in the league.
There's nothing to say
His team is nearly complete and ready for the next season..
"Lebron joins teams with his friends; Kobe’s enemies join teams with him." -Gil Meriken
So, if you were Kobe, you wouldn't want Paul on your team?
AB hasn’t been healthy and wasn’t a huge part of this championship run. They essentially won the series without him. Adding Paul to the team that did the heavy lifting through the playoffs makes them stronger. Until, or if ever, AB becomes what everyone else sees him as potentially then the team is never complete.

Nope, not gonna happen
Trade Bynum are you kidding me. Cp3 is an overrated defender, he only gets steals because he is fast. Kobe’s not that old, he is still effective. David West is a good player he got most of his points on iso’s.
"He only gets steals because he's fast" - what?
Yes, trade Bynum. How many centers do you know that were any good later in their careers after having as many knee injuries as Andrew? Name one. Olajuwon, nope. David Robinson, no injuries. Shaq, healthy as a horse until he’d been in the league a while. Patrick Ewing, no injuries. If NO will have him, with my blessing.
Saying Paul is only good because he’s fast is actually pointing out how talented he really is. Kobe is aging quickly and if he’s got to carry the load, late in the clock, against constant double/triple teams without getting some easy buckets, he’s going to age two years for every one he plays. With CP3, he will age slower and we could get 8 more high quality years out of the best player in the game. Who would you choose: David West or Pau? Paul comes here, Pau’s production goes up at least 2ppg, if not more. Paul will get easy shots for everyone, including Kobe.
maybe you mean...
…that he only gets steals because he gambles? Same thing, incidentally, that Kobe does a lot when he’s roaming the infield. It’s hard to get away with two free safeties in your defensive set, though. (Think I mixed enough sports in there?)
I also think his defense is overrated, and that his stats are inflated by a generous home scorer. That being said, he’s a great point guard. I just don’t think that he adds the right mix to be worth the sacrifice. Plus it sounds like it’s a moot point. We’ll see, I guess.
WE WANT BYNUM

Haha i so wanted to do that but I refrained myself
Kobe, God and I don't tweet. Everyone else does.
Why cant we laker fans just be content!! Its getting annoying!
Everyday i hear things like “lakers need to quit the triangle cos jerry buss doesnt like it”, “lets run an uptempo offense”..bla bla bla. Im sorry, but a system that has won you 2 back-to-back chips, cant possibly be bad! Cos whatever “offense” you want us to switch to, is already been run by someone in the league…and its apparent THEY’RE NOT THE ONES HOLDING THE TROPHY! Which brings me to this…
"If only Gasol would learn how to shoot a sky-hook, this triumvirate could become a new millennium version the “Showtime Lakers”.
Hmmn, im sorry, but Pau Gasol is everything he needs to be already. D guy more than makes sky hooks! His hook shots are 2nd to none in this league, but laker fans want more! Maybe u should become gasol! Which again brings me to this..
’Trade bynum for Paul" And to this I say, HELL FUCKING NO!!! Laker fans need to start thinking from a need standpoint. As back-to-back champs, how much do we really NEED to change? Each time I see another thread about bring back shaq, sign tmac,…now, sign paul, i just cringe! We have upgraded with Barnes, Blake & Ratliff at each of those positions! What we have is superior already, we have the damn trophy! Aaaaaarrggghhhh!
What help were Gasol and Bynum to Kobe in the Championships?
Gasol, I concede, has so much skill that I expect him to maximize it. Until Mychal Thompson is on the radio, while on the road, saying the only four people in the arena where he does his remote are himself, the janitor, Kobe, and Pau I think Gasol is short-changing himself, his legacy, and Lakers fans. Many times during the year, Kobe is the only one taking extra practice while MT is on the radio. Where are the others? Are they that much better than Kobe? Not.
As for Bynum, he was largely absent in the Championship run which is what may have caused Pau to be less productive, which caused Kobe to carry the load and wore him out. Thank God for Ron-Ron in game 7. Do you really want to leave next season to chance? Maybe AB can get through the season healthy for the first time? Maybe Pau and Kobe, a year older, won’t wear out as much?
Remember, the Showtime Lakers traded well-liked Norm Nixon to the Clippers for the rights to young Byron Scott. In this case, AB isn’t as good as Nixon was and Paul is light years better than Scott was.
Want to be satisfied with having the trophy in the past? Great for you. I want them to win again next year and many more times in the future before Kobe retires. Relying on injury-prone AB isn’t gonna get it done from where I sit.

Getting rid of one 7 footer
leaves the Lakers vulnerable to teams like Orlando and Boston who have big guys up front…

Kobe, God and I don't tweet. Everyone else does.
It's over man
He’s not coming to L.A. We all know this. Our next superstar is somewhere in 8th grade right now. We’ll get him eventually. We don’t need Chris Paul. Brian Shaw will most likely take over when Phil is done, so the Lakers will still be running the triangle, ergo, we don’t need an above average point guard. Just someone who can dribble decently and hit the open jumper.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.

Paul can do those things, and get them easier shots in transition.
More possessions helps hide Steve Blake’s defensive liability, D-Fish’s age, and takes sooo much pressure off Kobe. Personally, waiting for that 8th grader who may never become Chris Paul isn’t appealing to me.

trade bynum pick up shaq.
I don’t think we talk about bringing back shaq enough.
We could call him the big paper weight.
90% of Laker fans do not want Shaq.
Although that is a good way to ensure that he has less rings than Kobe. After Kobe wins his 6th he can say “Still got one more than Shaq. Hey big fella, we were just talking about you.”
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
I don't think Kobe's satisfied with just one more than Shaq
Kobe has a killer instinct
He wants to dominate…even in the number of rings…
passing Shaq was just one conquest
I’m sure tying and passing Jordan are on the radar now.

CP3 couldn't have finished
that and one fast break against 3 bigger celtics in the finals.
Fisher will win at least 1 game for you come finals time and that alone shouldve been worth his 4 mil asking price.
Err, yeah, he would have
First, he would have made it down the floor way faster than Fisher to get a free layup, and even if someone came back in time, he would have dropped in a floater.
In any case, Fisher and Blake are the last reason not to make this trade. Paul is so much better than either of them it’s not even a discussion.
