Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Basketball and us...

As the free agency period begins its slow and steady death many of us are left in different bowls of soup... Some begin the ever strong debate of who will win next season? Who will be MVP? What has been altered? Will it ever be the same? The loyalty of one player or the lack of loyalty.. Some of us simply have enough and decide to take a break from ESPN, from Yahoo sports, from NBA.com or god in heaven forbid from SSR itself!! But some of us, myself included do what we were doing when the free agency madness began...

We ball...

Im a 20 year old basketball player in Australia, though not Australian bred i appreciate life as long as i have a basketball in my hands... As a 15 year old i was a professional prospect and many expected big things, life and destiny had it that my body would break down three separate times and shatter my dreams... I fell into depression, i even got suicidal and yet through all this harshness something in me made me push...

4 years later and finally able to run without pain, i haven't stopped balling for the past 6 months... Everyday I'm out there, running, jumping, perfecting and relearning... Why should i lie to you, i still have hope of one day playing in the NBA, reality are for those who quit, dreams are those truths deep within us... And so i feed off this truth, day in day out... However yesterday, i was playing a pickup game with 9 other people, a 5 on 5, such a sweet 5 on 5... My stroke was getting back, my fade-away was as sharp as ever, three in your face fade-aways from the mid-range and my dream of playing alongside Kobe was starting to take shape again.... I even did my signature move taken from the book of Kobe.....pump fake with a pivot foot 360 and drained the two around my opponent.... Beautiful..... i ran back to play D and through the corner of my eye i saw a teen watching the game, curious, ball in hand, i knew he was watching only me...

After a short while the pickup match stopped for a quick break and drink, instead of sitting down, i walked straight to the young teen... "You want to jump in lil man?" My voice came out like an old battled warrior, ready to pass the torch to someone who could keep it alight... "uhhhh sure" Unsure of himself, not yet tested, he wouldve been no older than 14 but i wanted him to play... Turning around to my teammates and new friends i announced that i would be stepping out and that young...... "Simon" he stuttered, his confidence was growing through mine.... Welcoming as ever my friends embraced him and introduced themselves...I sat on the side bench, hands leaning back on the bench.... Let the game begin....

The game was fast and quite beautiful, i mean on the court you had 2 guys who had played in Europe only to realise basketball wasn't to be their main goal in life, you had another player who had played professionally in Africa and also had spells in low divison Canada and America and you had 1 player who was offered a scholarship to go U.S and most players were currently rostered in well divisioned teams in Australia... Of course my little Simon was struggling, shorter, weaker than the rest, i could tell that for a 14 year old he had serious skill, but amongst men who ranged from the 6ft 1 range to the 6ft 11 range he was being blocked and harassed... Eventually he looked at me with a look of hopelessness and i dont know why i didnt spare him and substitute in for him, instead i gave him a quick wink and thumbs up.... The other team scored on a fast break dunk and the ball was in-bounded into the hands of little Simon, and as he grabbed that ball i don't know what it was that made me say this, maybe he was my memory, maybe i took a likening to the cute kid, i don't know, but i yelled out to him "All the way Simon"...

Simon put his head down and dribbled up the court, there was something strange about this particular play, the movement was so familiar, the style was deadly, he was far far away... He got to the perimeter and called for an iso... No arguments to be made all 8 players cleared out giving them a quick breather and also allowing the kid to finally showcase his one on one skills... he looked his opponent square in the eyes and crossed over from left to right, then all too quickly set his feet and pump faked, the defender scrambled to block it and all of a sudden off his pivot foot he did a 360 around his opponent, he was free....

swish....

Game, set, match...

After the game me and little Simon were talking about the awesomeness of the play and i made sure to never point out that he took the move off me... "Anyway Simon i must be off little man, stay around these courts, next time ill give you a match".... And indicative of the kids integrity he said "No way man, i learned that move off you, i couldn't fool you with it".... The comment was so simple, the comment was so honest, this child here didn't want the glory to himself even though i was trying to give it... I was trying to make him forget where he learned that move, i was trying to make him the man... But it dawned on me all too soon... My actions affect those around me.... And through this story i pose this to you dear readers...

Through this free agency maybe some of us have forgotten, maybe some of us know but see this period as great entertainment... But this isn't what basketball is about... Basketball isn't about a player whinging about a few more or a few less million, basketball isn't about which team gets who, basketball isn't about entertainment... Basketball is expression, it's about 5 on 5, its about the unity of 5 on 5, it's about taking our youth off the streets, it's about teaching each other how to be gracious in defeat and humble in victory.... More importantly, it's about dreaming and let dream... Maybe this free agency has been the most entertaining in history and the most controversial... But this isn't basketball, this is entertainment, basketball is bigger than the NBA, the NBA is the WWE with a sport you love but somewhere down the lines maybe we've all forgotten that basketball is not just a sport, it's a state of emotion, it's the pen to our paper, it's the perception to our vision, the projection of our repressions... So please... As you can see through my experience with little Simon...Basketball is too beautiful..... Don't let the NBA define Basketball...

Let Basketball define the NBA....

Wow, great story.

You are correct, sir. The NBA is all about story lines nowadays… and not as much about the basketball being played. A rec from me, as well.

I'm going to take my talents to... your mom... Literally every single team that's ever won a championship has done it without LeBron James.

I believe basketball is the greatest game on earth

And while the NBA relishes in a culture that promotes everything wrong with professional sports; spoiled athletes and money hungry businessmen, Its still the biggest stage in the game. Therefor that is why I will always love the NBA.

Me being a die hard Laker fan is just my way of showing respect to the great game of basketball. As silly as it may sound.

Very well said

I believe that everyone here loves the Lakers for basketball, not for their marketing power… Of course their marketing power is what allowed us to hear of them… But i very much hope the beauty of basketball is why we fell in love with them….

by Pegasus_Floats on Jul 16, 2010 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

In order to be a die hard fan. You have to love the game first.

I used to like baseball and the A’s, but now I rarely even follow them.
Im a casual Niner fan. I watch them when I can. But I dont get too worked up over them.

But I love March Madness because I love basketball.
I love the Lakers because I love basketball.

Rec'd.

Oh and are you in Melbourne or Sydney? I’m in Melbourne, there are NO good courts in my area >.>

Before Kobe won the title, the line we would all hear was 'Kobe isn't as good as LeBron'. This is far from new. Laker and Kobe fans have heard it before. The names change, the premise remains the same. At different times in history, Tracy McGrady was considered to be better than Kobe. Allen Iverson was once considered his equal. Even the likes of Vince Carter, Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse were given the 'next Jordan' title.

Kobe has beaten all comers. They have retreated into the shadows as pretenders, whilst Kobe outlasted them all to stand alone in the League today, with his 5 rings and innumerable accolades.

Now? All the haters have left to say is ’Kobe’s no Jordan.’
You know what? They’re right. He’s not Michael Jordan. He’s Kobe Bean Bryant. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

hmmmm

That’s a little bit difficult actually, we are on opposite sides of the spectrum… However i know that near Rowville there are 3 courts… Well i know of 3 courts… two of them are off Wellington road in the Liberty Avenue Reserve and the other in the Peregrine Reserve.. The third court I’m definitely sure of is in the Rowville Community Center… Ive actually had a shoot there….

As for Glenny and Narre Warren i really can’t help you… I know that the courts i mentioned will still be close enough to you once you move to Narre Warren but inside the town itself I really can’t help you… Sorry if i wasn’t that helpful =(

Oh and i live in Thomastown, that’s a town near Epping… Well I’m actually on the border of Thomastown so i think I’m classified as Lalor haha damn geography.. shakes fist

I'm down at Liberty Ave 3-4 times a week, it's walking distance.

Rarely anyone there though.

Team I used to play for trained at RCC, too.

Brentwood in Glenny is a nice place to chill, but the level of competition there is generally low-ish, even for me.

good story

just wondering how you guys are really organized in playing basketball… our pickup games are full of fouls, hack, cusses, and my favorite taunting even if the team is losing…

by rballer on Jul 17, 2010 10:48 AM PDT reply actions

Haha i can relate

Usually pickup games are as you mentioned, however once a week me and 12 basketball friends come together for a pickup game (in this story only 10 of us rocked up, hey it happens)… It is treated as practise more than just a random game and for good reason… You very rarely get to play against formidable opponents outside of the league in a 5 on 5…. I mean we could make a starting 5 of players who could all be playing international or U.S college… It’s great practise so the guys all take it upon themselves to play a proper game knowing that if you start fooling around the other 5 are going to blow you right out of the courts…

We actually got challenged once by a bunch of streetballers who were as you mentioned, fouling, hacking and so on and you do not want to know the amount of posters we made out of them because they refused to work around screens, communicate with each other, pressure the rebounder, force us to the baseline and the list goes on…

So my advice to you would be, if you want a good pick up game where you actually play a proper 5 on 5 you need to organize a bunch of people who can actually relate to this as practise, if you can get 5 people who are of this mindset then everyone will follow suit…

For your positive comment, I’m glad you liked my style of writing, i tend to mumble on and on when i write, but when i know that someone will be reading it i edit and make it far shorter… I hope you’ve taken something from my experience =) I’m sure many people have had the same event happen to them, but i suppose perspective is what creates the experience yes?

I just got around to reading this.

It was wonderfully written. I also love the message. I was thinking about this after I read it and it really applies to me. I’m a pretty player but . I’ll probably be on my Freshman team next year, but not even that is guaranteed. Of course I have dreams of playing Varsity ball and dominating but this made me remember why I play; because I love the game. Whether I go on to play Varsity and get recruited for college or end up playing rec ball the rest of my years, I’m playing for the love of the game and nothing else. Great story.

I live in Cincinnati. I'm a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cincinnati sports teams. Besides UC, I'm a Xavier fan for basketball. I also like the Ohio State Buckeyes for all sports.

My name is Tyler. So I guess now you know about me.

i cried

Man, what a great fucking article. It reminds me of the days when penny was dropping dimes like he had hole in his pocket and the NBA’s slogan was “I Love this Game!”. And Hakeem’s dream shake over The Admiral the night he won MVP. Robinson won the MVP, but there was no way Hakeem was ending that night without showing him who he thought was the better player. Magic’s passing, Kareem’s sky hook, Jordan’s hangtime. The great Alonzo Mourning, such a warrior, little Muggsy Bogues! And who remembers how beast Grant Hill used to be? His jerseys were hotter than pogs around the Valley, where I lived back then. These are the reasons people my age fell in love with the game (not to mention basketball cards were really fucking cool too lol)
You might not see this as much in the US, but out in Asia (where I am now) there aren’t that many people that play ball, and you end up meeting the randomest people that you would normally never even talk to just because of bball. And the game has a way of bringing all those random people together. We have brown, black, white, yellow, rich, poor, Muslims, Christians, full blown doctors and regular high school kids all balling against each other, and they all respect each other because they all respect the Game . God knows how many endless discussion basketball has fueled long into the night, moves, strategies, great players, practice techniques, you name it.

Thank you sir, for reminding me about the reasons I love this game, God bless
