Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

When pressured to respond to [Cavs owner Dan] Gilbert's charge that he quit during his second-round series against Boston, James pointed out in his welcome-to-Miami event on July 9, that [Kobe] Bryant made only 6 of his 24 shots in Game 7 of the finals against Boston, which his Los Angeles Lakers won anyway for their second straight NBA title.

lame excuse from the king with no rings.

i’m not sure how kobe’s game 7 performance relates to his stupid act of quitting on his team.

Apples and oranges

Kobe’s 6-24 shooting wasn’t due to him giving up. In fact, if I would argue, Kobe was trying too much. He was in a rush to get to places before the offense even set up, as D-Fish noted in post-game. In fact, Kobe wanted to win so much, you could see it in him movements that he was nervous, saw the goal, could taste it, desperately wanted it, but in his haste, he was tripping over his feet, losing the handle of the ball, rushing the offense. He was impatient to win. Dude grabbed like 15 rebounds. For a guard, that’s impressive. Considering he (nearly?) out-rebounded the big 3 by himself. Kobe’s only vice in that game was his haste to make his offense work. But to be fair, NO ONE was shooting well for EITHER team. It wasn’t only Kobe who shooting poorly. That Finals game was a defensive effort by BOTH teams. It was all defense.

Lebron looked more lost on the court. I hate it when he plays the offense of dribble dribble dribble, time runs off the shot clock and with like two seconds left he passes to an open teammate who then has to chuck up a ill-timed three. In all the games I’ve seen them lose in, this always happens. I don’t know if he “gave up” but his body language certainly showed he definitely wanted the game to be over. He didn’t want to try to will his team to victory (as cliched as that sounds). I saw a very ambivalent Lebron on that court.

Completely different than Kobe, who was trying to do too much. Even when his shot wasn’t falling, his body language wasn’t that of “I don’t care anymore” or “I give up.” The only time I would argue he got completely confuzzled by his offense was when he turned the ball over in the beginning of the 4th and followed it up with a blocking foul. Jordan Farmar had to remind him, it’s just one play. It’s okay. And after that Kobe went on a tear (to the charity stripe – which is what LBJ should have done) in that 4th quarter.

Play the game of which Lakers reminds you of: TA - TI, Shannon Brown - Chris Brown, Pau Gasol - Jesus, Machine - Luis Scola/Russell Brand, PJ with mustache and beard - Colonel Sanders.

got a new post

In part at least, on just how much hotter Kobe got after the 8:24 point of the third quarter, which was when Rondo scored on a putback to make it 49-36.

http://thenullhypodermic.blogspot.com/2010/07/tale-to-tell.html

That look was as much as I’ve ever seen Kobe let a game get to him. Like, “What is wrong with me?” Only other time I’ve seen anything close was when he was missing those free throws at the end of Game 3 in last year’s Finals. But the stakes weren’t nearly as high then, as the Lakers had a 2-0 lead at the time.

these two comments on yahoo sports were good points:
kobe did have a terrible game in game..of all games…7. but if you watch it again, he did not quit, but kept trying to get his team back. it was a terrible mistake on his part, but he tried anyway…and was able to at the last few minutes…and with ronron, pau and fish helping him out. lebron, even if others would not like to admit, literally just stood there while the game was being played, watched his teammates, threw errant passes like he doesnt care if the game is on the line, and made very bad shots. you can see that he isnt willing himself to play harder. i understand he had terrible help, but an mj and a kobe will glare and talk smack with his teammates just to get thier point across. i did not see that with lebron. he gave up, but whether it was because of celtics defense, or his teammates not helping, or he is having a bad night, the thing is, HE QUIT.
Lebron quit because he was missing too many shots which impacted his stats. Why you think he stopped after going 3-14. Even in crucial playoff game he is worrying about his stats. Thats prime example of lack of killer instinct. Hes got the freak athleticism and can finish at the basket like crazy but he lacks the mentality and still has too many holes in his game.

and this:
I’m sorry, but LeBron and those who agree, and say that he had no help in Cleveland must have been sleeping the last two seasons. In both seasons they had the best regular season record in the NBA. 60-plus in each. He accrued back to back regular season MVP awards (first time in ions that had been done) in each of those seasons. How can that then translate to “no help” when they were eliminated? MJ’s Bulls, Bird’s Celtics, Magic’s Lakers all won the NBA title when they had the best regular season record. We can say now that Jordan had Pippen and Rodman, Magic had Kareem and Worthy, Bird had Parrish and McHale, all of whom will likely be hall of famers. But at the time, nobody knew what the legacy of these teams would be. they were all defined in the playoffs by winning the championship! Had LeBron been able to win, then his role players would’ve received accolades. Because they didn’t, the Cavs “sucked”. Superstars elevate the play of others on their team when it matters most by imposing their will. That is what makes them a superstar. Until LBJ develops the “will” he can never be the player that leads a team to the title. Talent alone is not enough.

Lebron has a Kobe complex

He’s jealous and insecure.

Well, whatever. Kobe had a bad shooting game. He played awesomely on defense and rebounding. Plus, he hit one of the biggest shots of the game, late in the fourth quarter to put the Lakers up by four, a backbreaker, and a crowd energizer. Game was basically over after that shot. After all the misses, he still had the confidence, and more importantly, the courage to take that shot. You can’t criticize that.

Time for Lebro to get over himself.

Magic made me a Laker fan.

Lebron James: Failing at arguing since 2003

What is the nature of your thoughts, gentlemen, when you say "fuddle duddle" or something like that?

I hope Lebron never changes

so that his cluelessness keeps him from reaching his potential.

Kobe, God and I don't tweet. Everyone else does.

Lebron insinuates that Kobe quit?

Is 23 pts and 15 rebounds (just 3 rebounds less than 7-foot Gasol) is quitting?
Is delivering the Lakers to its 2nd Championship quitting?

Long before there was LBJ, there was another physically talented power forward prowling the hardwood.

This is a great video of one of my favorite players, Chuck, King Charles, Turrible, however you know him, meet him again here. He loved the game, and was AWESOME!
