after 3 summer league games, Mitch is looking like a genius.

caracter is ranked number 1 and has been unstoppable on the blocks. we will have to wait to see how that relates when he has a better defender on his back, but at this time it looks like he will make the roster. might even be good enough to be bynums backup. i hope pj gives our two rookies some pt.

ebanks, who was ranked 1, is now 3rd behind John Wall (the #1 pick). he has an off game on his 3rd summer game, but has shown he can score and play solid defense. It is FREAKY how much he looks and plays like ariza. with the unkown question of wlatons back injury, ebanks could see some steady playing time as well during the regular season.

considering both of these guys were picked up in the 2nd round, it is amazing the numbers they are putting up and the talent the have. i heard they both were 1st roudn talent with some personal issues, but everything is lookign good right now. i think both will make the team as they will be cheap and are playign really well so far this summer.

    IN MITCH WE TRUST.

Agree on Caracter, in general, but can you see him in a Powell type role, not playing for games at a strech, and then having to make an impact on the game with his energy, defense and shot?

    Maybe not

but for what it’s worth, I don’t see Powell in a “Powell-type” role either.

by C.A. Clark on Jul 13, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Hmm...? I don't think Powell has gotten enough flak about how truly ineffective he was

Powell and Ammo have been the two least effective Lakers since 2008. If Powell is missing his spot-up jumper, there is virtually no other contribution he can make to the team. He is a terrible defender, a terrible finisher around the hoop, and a below average rebounder overall.

Kobe meeting with Raja Bell this week in LA! YUS!
Bell is traveling to Los Angeles this week to watch the ESPYs and has arranged to meet with Bryant to hear the Lakers’ face of the franchise make yet another recruiting pitch to the 33-year-old swingman.

Bell acknowledged last week in a phone interview with ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Dave McMenamin that he has already fielded several phone calls from Bryant, who was unforgettably clotheslined to the floor by Bell in Game 5 of a testy Suns-Lakers series in 2006 that L.A. ultimately lost in seven games.

NBA front-office sources say that Bell continues to draw interest from a variety of playoff teams, such as Miami, Dallas and San Antonio. One source said signing with the Heat has essentially been ruled out because of Miami’s financial constraints after signing LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Mike Miller to flank the re-signed Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem. But the Suns are also weighing the prospect of trying to bring Bell back.

Bryant, though, has not abandoned his pursuit and continues to press Bell to join the Lakers, who have only $1.8 million of their mid-level exception left to offer Bell next season after signing Steve Blake.

One source close to the situation said memories of Bell’s takedown, which earned him a suspension for a Game 6 of the series — the Suns, down 3-2, won the game at Staples Center without him — are actually one reason why Bryant sees Bell as such an ideal teammate. The premise? Anyone with the gumption to hit Bryant that hard is someone he wants on his team.

Its pretty much down to us and the spurs

the heat are out of the running because of the haslem and miller signings.

we have 1.8 million to offer, while the spurs have 2.4 million to offer. but i think we have the much better chance of getting bell a ring. i would much rather have bell than brown at this point. bell doesnt take terrible shots and knows his roll. he is a good 3 point shooter and wont dribble around for ten seconds and then take a jump shot. bell is a much better defender and will bring even more toughness to this laker squad. yeah, ill probbly miss browns high flying dunks but we now have ebanks, who i have heard can put it down pretty nicely as well. If this is our starting lineup at the beginning of the regular season, as ill have NOTHING to complain about.

    PG: Derek Fisher, Steve Blake
SG: Kobe Bryant, Raja Bell, Sasha Vujacic
SF: Ron Artest, Devin Ebanks, Luke Walton
    PF: Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom
C: Andrew Bynum, Derrick Caracter, DJ Mbenga

If im correct, if we sign Bell, we wil have no way to sign anyone that wasnt on the team last year, so Mbenga will most likely be brought back. If we dont sign bell and sign brown, then we can use the 1.8 million on a FA center. if i am wrong in this, will someone correct me.

    MUCH better defender.

    And can pass better.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Shannon, and think he’s a nice change of pace at times. And there has been a few moments when one of his dunks propelled momentum, BUT he’s an inadequate passer and ball handler, and he’s not a very smart defender.

If I had to choose between the two, I’d go with Bell. Last year proved need shooters. Bell is one. If we ran more, then that would be a pro for Shannon, but we don’t. We’re very half court oriented.

the choice is between Bell and whoever would be brought in for the same money at backup center. I think the team would benefit more from devoting the remaining money to a backup center. If Shannon/Sasha proves ineffective, Sasha’s contract is a chip that would likely bring in a wing than a center. NO OJ MAYO. Dude was a douche at USC and I can’t stand rooting for him. Do not want

I think the veteran big will contribute a bit more minutes than we are accustomed to seeing.

AB just shouldn’t be counted on to play big minutes. Maybe 30 minutes or so. All of the older starters will probably see their minutes reduced to keep them fresh, one of the reasons why they signed a veteran like Blake and possibly Bell. The Lakers will want consistency when the starters go out of the ballgame for a breather. So I believe the veteran big will be somebody who can contribute something besides six fouls like DJ Mbenga. Plus, Mbenga is getting expensive. Given his experience and last contract, he’ll likely net $1 million as the veteran’s minimum.

The injury risk in the frontcourt will be greater with Odom playing the worlds. Doesn’t he have a bum shoulder?

That Rolling Stone article is hilarious

    An excerpt:

“3. Gray isn’t visible during most of the interview — thank God — but about five minutes into their talk LeBron glances down slightly, and suddenly I was conscious of feeling Gray’s off-camera eyes locked on LeBron’s crotch during LeBron’s answers. I burst out laughing. Overall, the whole scene was an uncanny replay of the Hot Tub Time Machine sequence in which the balding white Rob Corddry is forced to suck off black comedian Craig Robinson after losing a football bet.”

While it's funny because of the topic

Just remember that the author Matt Taibbi, was the one who said Kevin Durant has already surpassed Kobe as best player, and also slapped the “megalomaniac” tag on Kobe.

"(Durant’s ability) to challenge demented three-faced narcissist Kobe Bryant and the Laker hegemony has been the highlight of the year … The now-inexorable climb down the dominance ladder for a megalomaniac like Kobe is a tale every sports fan outside L.A. can’t help but appreciate …

"Kobe has always been smart and predatory and pathologically driven, and he’s going to maximize every last drop of ability in an attempt to stay on the throne, so the Lakers will hold off the Thunder for a few more years. But the moment is coming when Kobe is going to throw everything he has at Durant, and this wide-eyed, lanky, respectful kid – nothing personal, Mr. Bryant – is going to kick his @$& anyway. That’ll be a delicious moment, and it might even happen this year." (Sorry, Rolling Stone Magazine doesn’t provide a link to this story).

I can laugh at this just as much as I laughed at his portrayal of Kobe as a megalomaniac. lol. Plus, he was wrong, Durant didn’t surpass Kobe and even with Kobe barely able to jump and getting every other layup blocked he had a better series than Durant. lol. Plus, he’s right, eventually Kobe won’t be able to outdo Durant anymore, but he personally will enjoy it while I won’t. It’ll give Kobe fans comfort, and annoy LeBron fans, but honestly, do you see Jordan ever giving a non-champion the benefit of the doubt over a five-time winner? Jordan values winning too much to ever let anything else decide it over that. All this really proves is that Jordan can count to five. Illguaskas signing with the Heat
Cleveland Cavaliers free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will follow his ex-Cavs teammate LeBron James to the Miami Heat, his agent told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“Once LeBron signed there, LeBron started recruiting him,” said Herb Rudoy, Ilgauskas’ agent, according to the report.

The only outstanding issue is whether Ilgauskas will sign a one-year deal or a one-year deal plus a player option, Rudoy said, according to the report.

The center would sign for the league’s veteran minimum of $1.4 million.

here is theie other center (if you call him a center)........
Miami also added Juwan Howard(notes), and cackle all you want, but he did well as an undersized center last year in Portland. And, as Ira Winderman pointed out last night, it appears that the Heat suddenly have an actual roster.

can someone make a heat deph chart?

    chalmers/ miller
    wade/ rookie or vet?
    Illgauskas?/ J Howard?
    lebron/ rookie or vet?
    bosh /rookie or vet?

by volar on Jul 13, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Miami Heat depth chart (so far)

    PG: Mario Chalmers
    SG: Dwayne Wade, Mike Miller
    SF: Lebron James, Da’sean Butler
PF: Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Jarvis Varnado
C: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Juwon Howard, Dexter Pittman

so they have 12 under contract (if they sign all their draft picks), but only have 1 real pg. miller could run the point, but then they only have 1 sg. so it looks like they will be targeting a sg or pg for their 13th player. most likely to sign for the veteran or league minimum.
anthony carter, chucky atkins, rafer alston, jason williams…………….. there is a coupel options out there.

It will most likely be Jason Williams

but I still think Wade will play a lot at the point. Talent-wise their best lineup might be Wade-Miller-LeBron-Bosh-Big Z.

I wonder if Jordan would flip Dampier for Al Jefferson. I would do that in a heart beat.

Boobie Gibson. Could include Augustin in the deal, gives the Cavs a young point guard.

    Ronnie Brewer update
    Joseph M in Chicago:
kyle korver stated at his intro conference “I was texting Ronnie Brewer earlier. We’re trying to start the Chicago Jazz.” Very similar to when Boozer was asked about Korver, and hours later Korver had agreed terms with the bulls. Brewer next?

    from: hoopsworld

Bell would be better than Brewer, but if we don’t get him, Brewer would be better than Barnes or McGrady. Bringing Shannon back might even be better than those last two because of their personalities.

That being said, I’d hate to see McGrady go to Chicago or Miami if he’s got anything left in the tank.

Brewer is on the bottom of the list with those guys. Can you fill me in about why you think he would be a good fit?

to me it's a matter of best fit

Brewer is dependable and would stay within his abilities as a role player. He can play defense, knock down shots, and has young legs. I also think he’d be the most consistent, and that’s what the Lakers need most out of the bench imo.

McGrady has the potential to torch opponents, but he might also hog the ball and try to do too much to regain his luster. That could cause a meltdown with the second unit on the court and problems in the locker room. Barnes brings intensity along with talent, but again, the risk of disturbing team chemistry is why I prefer Brewer.

    Damn.

    Nice Credits, Wondah.

"During Game 1 of the NBA finals, Chris Rock joked around. Kobe Bryant completely ignored Rock. Bryant was practically a zombie 100 percent absorbed into the game.
He is not a nice guy.
He sits on the bench with eyes narrowed and his lips tightly sealed. He scoffs and yells at his opponents and his teammates for short comings.
    People hate him for this.
That’s why those people will never win NBA championships."
