So why is Byron Scott not a good option?
Ive been out of the SB game for a few days ever since my site tagline proposal was vetoed.
All I hear on here in regards to the coaching situation is that the tribe has spoken and you guys obviously do not want Byron Scott. Im a bit confused as to why.
It looks now if Phil walks were either getting Scott or Shaw. Cleveland getting the other. Personally Id rather see Scott coach than Shaw. Here are my reasons;
-He demands respect from his players, Hes "Doc Riveresque". He yells, screams at his players and officials
-Hes done this before. He took the Nets to the finals and the Hornets to their best season in franchise history
-He has purple and gold in his blood. He played with the Lakers. Obviously he feels allegiance for this franchise. The guy was offered to coach Cleveland but is holding out for the possibility to coach the Lakers
Reasons as to why Shaw would not be a good match;
-Shaw is like everyone on the teams friend. Hes the guy they go to when Phil was mad at them. He was the rock who was neutral. Kind of like the mom of the team.
-Hes never been a head coach before. Makes me a bit uneasy if you ask me.
Regardless if Phil leaves or not, the staff will still have staff to maintain running the triangle. Whether the coach is Scott or Shaw.
P.S. Anyone who wants Jeff Van Gundy, you're an idiot.

UMMM we dont want scott because...
Even you said it i
bq. -He demands respect from his players, Hes “Doc Riveresque”. He yells, screams at his players and officials
Do you think that Phil’s a guy who “Yells, screams at players..”?
You should think about that question yourself…….
A coach like Phil is laidback, calm, cool, collected and lets his players figure stuff out by themselves. WE NEED this type of coach, not like a drill seargeant but like your favorite first grade teacher who lets you figure things out on your own….

And BTW Doc’s coaching system was partially to blame for the Celtic loss in the finals

Scott has been known to be a poor offensive coach and suck up to the main players
while leaving everyone else in the dark and this eventually lead to dysfunction/ him getting fired. I dont think we want a personality like that coaching this team. Especially given this team is coming off back to back titles. In this certain kind of situation, you want to keep things consistent with what Phil has done the last few years and Brian Shaw is the best option we have. He has worked for years under Phil and is ready to take the reigns if necessary. Plus he isnt afraid to call out or discipline players (see Sasha incident).

“P.S. Anyone who wants Jeff Van Gundy, you’re an idiot.” You sound just like the Kobe haters.
Let me blunt, JVG has been pining for the Lakers job since he’s been kissing their ass on national tv and actually providing useful insight while doing so. He’s to the point and usually correct when breaking down the team mistakes and giving praise where it is deserved. What has Scott been up to since he was fired? Anything? Has he watched the Lakers in depth or as closely as JVG? Unlikely.
I vote for an open competition for coach between JVG and Shaw until someone convinces me otherwise.
Haha
So youd give an edge to JVG just because he commented Laker games? Maybe we should give Mike Breen a shot too

Kobe and JVG get along, just like Scott and Kobe. I don’t mean for you to take it personally, but an open competition would be wise. That’s how interviews work in the real world. I’ve also never heard JVG rip on the triangle or suggest the Lakers should run their offense outside of it. I doubt he’d change much.
My 5 Reasons:
1. His track record is crap. You’d have to really suck to get fired in the middle of a season twice. Yes, he brought scrubs teams from irrelevence to the spotlight, but they usually plunge back down before he’s run out of town. We’re already in the spotlight, wanna predict what’ll happen next?
2. He wears on players, and has a shelf life of 2-3 seasons. After that, he loses the team and the locker room splits into “Pro Scott” and “Anti Scott”. Try three-peating with that team chemistiry…
3. His “Princeton Offense” is basically a series of pick and rolls. And once the elite teams figured it out (ie: Spurs). Bam, game over. I want the Triangle to continue because this team is built for it, and also, we don’t have an elite PG to run his offense. Fisher+Scott’s offense= countless facepalms
4. Why would you want to change horse in the middle of a 3 peat? Wouldn’t it be easier if we have some sort of stability and smooth transition out of the Jackson Era?
5. Check the news: he’s making a move on the Cleveland job. He sounds like he just want a coaching job, and is willing to take the less glamorous one cuz it’s a sure thing.
Good thing too. They get Scott to rebuild their crap Post-LeBron team, we get Phil+Shaw or just Shaw. He gets Cavs back into the spotlight, and plunges/get fired. We 3 peat and have another parade.
And everybody’s happy!

Scott knows its not a lock to coach the lakeshow though
It has nothing to do with what team is in a better situation now. The point is he could call CLE any minute and he knows he could be the head coach. With LAL its a long shot that hell coach there and hes still holding out for the tiny percent chance of it happening

It comes down to main candidates at this point, I wouldn’t say thats a longshot…
"I’m like a superhero. Call me Basketball Man." - LBJ
He's an awful offensive coach
And this team is definitely not constructed to run pick-and-roll sets every possession unless we sign Blake and Korver and trade for Bosh.
As for the “loyalty” thing, that’s a bunch of hogwash. I wouldn’t give Magic or Kareem the inside track to coaching here because honestly they haven’t shown that they can be decent head coaches. The team has a responsibility to take the best coach available and at this juncture, it’s either Shaw or JVG.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
So JVG runs the triangle now?
Where do the Lakers rank in my life? I say Lakers, sex,...and breathing
by RA37thriller on Jun 28, 2010 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions
He runs a slow system with a heavy diet of post-ups and a lot of ball movement
That’s far better than Scott. Besides that, JVG is probably the best non-Pop/Larry Brown defensive coach in the league.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
A slow system is not what the Lakers need
The Lakers core players is made up of finesse players. Aside from Artest and a healthy Bynum none of them likes the walk it up, slow, physical, grind it out type of game. Sure the Lakers can play that type of game but they are much better on offense when they execute earlier on the clock. Phil calls his team more of an 8-12 sec team. Part of the Lakers game is the transition game too. And I doubt JVG with stick with the triangle.
The Lakers defense doesn’t neccessary need to get better. The Lakers were already a top 3 on defense statistics. If an improvement needs to be made, it’s our offense. We are going to need guys that can shoot the 3 ball and spread the floor better. JVG system is too much post-ups with not a lot of substance. His system to me is too predictable in a sense. So either Phil comes back or we are force with Shaw. Everybody else is not a good candidate.
Perimeter passing and spacing?
I think that’s what the Lakers needed. How many times were SSR members pissed to watch somebody named Artest and Brown dribble out the clock?
Are the Lakers not going to use the post with Pau Gasol? Is there anyone who can match his skillset on D? Won’t he be running wings into the paint to break up a double team and set up the easy dunk?
Does the last paragraph sound that much different from what the Lakers were and should be doing? Does the last paragraph indicate that we want Artest setting up a vacation home on the 3 point line? His offense sounds good to me.
It's not ideal, but it's better than the non-Shaw alternatives
So much of our ball movement is predicated off post-ups, triangle or no triangle that having a coach that emphasizes this is definitely a plus. A slow offense does not necessarily mean a “grind-it-out” offense either; here it’s more about ball movement. In any case, I doubt he would have a problem with early offense or early transition opportunities, much of which is run on an ad hoc basis depending on the situation in any case. It’s also a lot easier to do that with Gasol in your frontcourt than Yao.
As for the defensive end, why be satisfied with our current setup? Having a top three mark doesn’t mean you can’t improve on it. JVG taught Thibodeau before he went to Boston and I see no reason we can’t lead the league in defensive efficiency assuming we add a somewhat competent PG defender.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Good point
If Pau and Bynum are taught to get to their post position quickly, I’m going to guess the offense will run faster, and further, that Pau and Bynum will get position deeper in the post. This would entail having Kobe/Artest/Fisher taking the ball out instead of Pau and Bynum.
Makes sense to me.
I agree with you in that we need offensive improvements.
But here’s the thing: with this team, post-ups >>>>>> any other attempt at scoring. Every single starter scores better out of the post than anywhere else, except for Fisher (and even he has the size to post up).

Disagree
Part of the reason why the Lakers can lose ball games is because the opponents defense crams the entire paint area because nobody can hit outside shots. So when Lakers pass out, nobody can hit the open shot. You can’t just throw the ball in the post and expect good things to happen when the spacing and floor spreading isn’t there to give them leverage.
Our offense improvements has to be guys that can hit outside shots. This is exactly why we hear names like Blake, Korver, or anybody with a good J, is a priority to get. Our 08 and 09 teams had good efficient triangle plays, partly because we had guys deadly from the outside. Fisher, Sasha and Ariza/Radman where hitting around 40% of their 3’s and because of that, the spacing was good and opens up our interior game.
I also notice that the Lakers offensive efficiency is better when they make quick decisions by executing quicker. The Lakers don’t need a Nelson/D’Antoni style pace. But they definitely don’t need that east coast grind it out slow game either. It’s good to know that the Lakers can play different styles as we seen with the Phoenix and Boston series. But they need to stay semi-fast as their core.
Gasol and Bynum aren’t Yao/Shaq like players. Odom like the uptempo game more considering his skill sets. They are athlectic/finesse types, compared to the slow mobile Yao/Shaq types. If Gasol/Bynum are taught to get to their post quicker and recieve the ball before the defense sets, it’s all good to me. We’ll get high FG% shots with semi-fast pace.
We absolutely do not need this.
