Around SBN: Heating Up: Miami Evens Series; LeBron, Wade Take Charge

Free Agency Predictions

I don't know about you guys, but I am pretty excited for the beginning of free agency this year.  We have probably the best group of free agents we have ever seen and the NBA next year will most likely look radically different than it did last year.

I think it would be interesting to see what everyone's predictions are for where they think everyone will end up.  It will make July 1 come quicker and the winner can get some kind of title for his sig or something along those lines.....I'll let C.A, Sav, etc. decide on the extra but anyone can put in suggestions for the winners title.

So let's take a look:

Star-divide

I'll apologize right now for the length, but I think everyone I've included is significant is one way or another.

TOP-TIER FREE AGENTS

 LeBron James

Photobucket

Where "The King" is going is what is on most people's minds.  There are multiple websites from www.lebrontothemavs.com  to  sendlebrontochicago.com where fans are doing whatever they can to bring him in.  The main destinations that people are predicting for him include Cleveland, Chicago and New York.

In the end I think LeBron chooses the Chicago Bulls.  Honestly, I think Kobe leading the Lakers to the title this year and the comparisons between him and Michael Jordan sealed the deal.  If the Celtics had won I think the fact that LeBron is from Cleveland and that is where all his buddies are from would have been enough to keep him there, but now he wants needs championships.  Chicago offers Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and another superstar.  That is more than enough.  New York never really stood a chance, he is already an international superstar so New York really doesn't offer much.

I'm wrong if: LeBron decides that he doesn't want to be under Jordan's shadow and wants to create his own legacy in Cleveland.

Chris Bosh

 Photobucket

Any discussions involving LeBron are quickly followed by conversations about Chris Bosh.  He has played well and has shown himself as one of the top big men in the game.  After playing in Toronto, he knows that it is all about winning.  His belief, which many share, is that if he teams up with LeBron they would be able to lead a team to a NBA title.

That said, I believe he will follow the cool kid and become the sidekick with the Chicago Bulls.

I'm wrong if: LeBron chooses Cleveland.  Bosh status at that point is up in the air and most likely dependent on someone else.  My back up for him would be New York.

Dwyane Wade

 Photobucket

He is the number three superstar in the league, and yet he probably doesn't get the recognition he deserves for the great player he is.  He is a better shooter than Kobe shoots a higher field goal percentage than Kobe as well as a better distributor (more assists).  The one year he had a good second teammate he won the championship.  There has been talk of him teaming up with LeBron, but in reality that would not work and both players know that.

There was always one choice all along, and he will remain a member of the Miami Heat.

I'm wrong if: Can't really think of anything....I guess if everyone else signs somewhere else first.

Carlos Boozer

 Photobucket

He has put in solid work and great numbers but he doesn't get the press Bosh does.  Maybe its the lack of dreads.  He averages a double-double which is something his counterpart cannot say.

In the end, Boozer needs an excellent guard and a max contract, and I see that happening at the Miami Heat.

I'm wrong if: The draw of New York is too strong.

Dirk Nowitzki

 Photobucket

Dirk has an ETO and is likely to use it to test the market.  He does about everything well, from shooting like a 2 to rebounding like a 5.

In the end, Dirk will be disappointed by free agency/realize that he truly belongs on the Dallas Mavericks like Wade in Miami and Kobe in LA.

I'm wrong if: Dirk is tired of Mark Cuban or realizes that he cannot win a championship in Dallas.

SECOND-TIER FREE AGENTS

Amare Stoudemire

Amar'e is probably the most interesting free agent.  He was out of place in Phoenix and his true ability will be shown if he is able to thrive as a true power forward/center.

In the end, I see a guy who the big guns don't want.  A second-tier team needing an inside presence makes a lot of sense, and for me that team is the Oklahoma City Thunder.

I'm wrong if: There's a lot of reasons here, Amar'e is kind of a shot in the dark and I think he will surprise a lot of people.

Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson is being looked at as a complimentary piece that could go along with a lot of the big guns.  He is a solid player who could add a lot to a contender.

In the end, I don't see him leaving the Atlanta Hawks.

I'm wrong if: The Heat or Knicks see him as a pivotal piece.

Ray Allen

Sharp shooter who looked terrible in every Finals game where he didn't set a record.  His veteran presence could go a long way for teams looking to compete.

I'm of the thinking there is no way he leaves the Boston Celtics.

I'm wrong if: He holds off until most big names have signed and a perfect spot opens up for him.

David Lee

It is hard to consider a guy underrated when so many do, but without a doubt this guy is a talent that more people should have heard of.  His numbers do benefit from Mike D'Antoni's system, but this guy is a rising star.

There will be a strong draw for him in other places, but he is much too important for the future of the New York

New York Knicks for them to let him go.

I'm wrong if: The Knicks don't end up as major players in free agency.

THIRD-TIER FREE AGENTS

 Derek Fisher

He is getting older, and overtime his minutes need to be increased.  But in the end, his middle name still is intangibles.

There is no way he goes anywhere else than the Los Angeles Lakers.

I'm wrong if: Phil retires and the new coach is an idiot.

Tracy McGrady

He has fallen incredible amounts from just a few years ago.  We will see next year if he can still be an all-star caliber player.

Rumors of his Laker-dom have been greatly exaggerated.  He will be taken by a team needing a scorer who will have lost out on the stars they really wanted.  That team will be the New York Knicks.

I'm wrong if: Houston can convince him to come back or if he is actually sincere about not starting.

Michael Redd

If not for only playing 51 games the last 2 seasons due to injury, he might be seeded higher.  As it is, he is a bit of a question mark as to what his effectiveness will be.  He can be a solid 3 and contribute to a championship caliber team.

The team that will benefit from him as a great #3 will be the Miami Heat.

I'm wrong if: The Heat decide Gay or Joe Johnson fit better as their third big one.

Rudy Gay

Strong third option.  If Joe Johnson stays in Atlanta, he will compete to compete a championship caliber team.  Better rebounder than Redd and probably the safer bet but Redd is a better scorer.

He will be skipped over by the Heat (though he shouldn't be) and he will end up with the New York Knicks.

I'm wrong if: The Heat realize they have enough scoring, or Gay makes the mistake of staying with the Grizzlies.

Kyle Korver

Here is somebody a lot of Laker fans including myself would love to have, but in the end they won't be able to do it.

He will stay a member of the Utah Jazz.

I'm wrong if: The Lakers choose him over the following free agent, or some other contender realizes his value and that he doesn't need a max contract.

Raja Bell

How times change, he will quickly go from foe to friend.

He will become a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

I'm wrong if: Some other free agent catches the Lakers eye who is a shooter or a point guard.

Jermaine O'Neal

His time with the Heat was disappointing, and he has fallen in stock mightily since his last free agency period.

He will complete what is effectively a trade and while Boozer takes his place, he will end up on the Utah Jazz.

Allen Iverson

He is not long for this (the NBA) world.  In his waining moments, he won't have many options and the Houston Rockets will be grasping at straws and take what they can to keep Yao somewhat happy.

I'm wrong if: I'm just completely guessing, but after how much intrigue he has added to the league, I thought he was worth a mention.

Shaquille O'Neal (5>4...)

Shaq diesel is a shadow of his former self.  He will want to go to a contender but no real contender will want him.  He will end up at the closest thing he can get to that with the Atlanta Haws.

I'm wrong if: Again a complete guess, he is a hard one to place.

With the landscape of the NBA completely changing, these are exciting times.  The West has talent from top to bottom, and with the Mavericks, Thunder, Nuggets, and Lakers it should be an interesting race.  Next year the East finally looks like it will have talent led by the Heat, Bulls, Knicks, with the Celtics and Magic lurking in the background.

Is it next year yet?

He is a better shooter than Kobe

no he’s not.

No, his percentage on jump shots is far worse.

FG% does NOT imply good shooting skills, otherwise you could say Dwight Howard is a great shooter. Wade’s FG% is high due to his ability to get to the rim, something Kobe does not do as much of in his age, but his percentage on jump shots from midrange, long range and three is all worse than Kobe’s, and nothing special at all.

exactly what saurav said above,

you can’t judge from just FG% alone…
saurav used dwight as an example. let’s look at a guard for example
rajon rondo shot above 50% from the field this past year. we all know who’s the better shooter.

the only guard whose fg% reflects his shooting ability is probably steve nash. he is excellent in all aspects (fg%, 3p%, ft%)

i think this would be much fitting: can the lakers go back to the finals?

there are so many contenders in the west, not to mention the OKC Thunder. This team will be a real threat to the lakers.

On the thunder

The Thunder made some strong moves on draft day, but none of which makes them championship material. Cole Alrdich is good, but he’s no Pau Gasol, he’s no Marc Gasol for that matter. They still have the same core and as of now they are still stagnant at the three.

They only become championship contenders if they decide to make a splash in the offseason and take a “win now” mentality. (which their gm isn’t fond of). If they pick up rudy gay and kyle korver then I’m scared (which they could probably swing with their money).

Besides, it is unlikely the Lakers will see the Thunder early in the playoffs. We might expect OkC to get a higher seed next year.

by J Hawk on Jun 27, 2010 10:02 AM PDT reply actions

i dont see why gay or korver would scare you

our strength still is inside with bynum and gasol by next years playoffs, they will be better and at the best, kobe will be as good as he was this year

gay is a small forward, durant is a small forward, he has no place there unless the durantula moves to a shooting guard, korver is also listed as a 3

the thunder loves green at the 4, so they need a 2 and a 5, most importantly a 5
with westbrook and durant, if they can get a top 5 center they are extremely dangerous

The Thunder's main development will come from the inside.

That’s been their MO all along. Remember, they went from 25 wins to 50 with Harden being their only addition.

yea but they extra 25 wins came from their players starting to peak

Durant has a much higher ceiling, but I’m not sure about anybody else. This team, with the talent they have, has a definite ceiling and IMO that falls short of a championship

Westbrook could form a jumpshot...

Green needs to bulk up a bit, and Harden can definitely play better than last season. I agree with you, though, they need a true big man to win a Championship (not a Bosh or Amare – style PF, but a true Big Man). No team since the Jordan Bulls have won a ‘ship without a dominant post presence, and even they had Rodman during the second ThreePeat. They’re mainly set at every other position, especially now with Aldrich, who I haven’t seen much of but I’m assuming can play a little PF when the Thunder want to go big.

If you are saying they are set at every position besides center

You have more faith in Green and Harden than I do. I think if Green bulks up it may hurt his game. Even if they get a second tier big man (for me that means not quite all-star level but almost) I still question their ability to win a championship.

They as well as the Suns and especially the Magic represent the direction the NBA is trying to go in. People like big scoring and flashy players, so they don’t want to see big man go at each other. The 4 has become the 3 and the 3 has become another 2 for a lot of teams. This just represents a faster game with more points and quicker posessions because that is what our society wants. While I think that change is imminent, until it happens these teams won’t be able to win a championship. Once the thunder are able to do it that will signify the change but that seems a far way down the road to me

I have faith in Harden and Sefolosha to hold down the two-guard spot together.

And if Cole Aldrich matures well into the NBA, him, Green and a dominant Center would get the Job done. And hey, Orlando at least has Dwight, without him that team, comprised primarily of weak defenders, wouldn’t even have HCA in the Playoffs, and wouldn’t make the Playoffs in the West.

I can't see Aldrich's game transferring to the NBA

I watched him at Kansas and he reminds me of Shawn Bradley. Plus white big guys typically do not do well in the NBA, people like Lopez are rare.

Yeah Orlando has one of the best big men, but 1-4 they are weaker than OKC (IMO at least). The point is more about the composition of the team and the changing role of the 4.

My crystal ball tells me that wade & bosh will probably end up together

Lebron will either end up with Joe Johnson or Carloes Boozer if he chooses to leave Cleveland.

Amare and Dirk will remain where they are. :)

And Chris Paul is comming to the Lakers :). kekekekeke

i cant see

bosh and lebron ending up in separate places (unless lebron is in cleveland) , there has been way too much talk about them teaming up

also with johnson, he is a shooting guard, and if you look at teams with great 3’s, they dont have great 2’s because i dont think the dynamic works out

and y do u think amare will stay put with all the news about him wanting to show what he can do?
for him would he stay for a lack of a better offer or because he truly wants to stay in phoenix?

He's not going to win in Phoenix.

The system is perfect for him, but the talent level overall is just not good enough. IMO, this year was their best shot. Grant Hill’s not going to play any better, JRich in the first two rounds of the Playoffs was playing some of the best ball he ever did in Phoenix, Nash basically had a career year, etc. If he wants to win, he’ll need to find another team. But the only person I see him fitting in with at all is Wade, because Wade is deadly as a pick-and-roll ball-handler, but the Heat need a true big man if they want to contend (JO is not good enough), one who can cover for Amare’s defensive deficiencies.

thats why i was trying to figure where else he would fit, but after lebron and bosh go to the bulls, the heat will have a decision between boozer and amare and i dont see them choosing amare

Amare provides true size.

But Boozer is tougher. It’s tough, because all these teams looking for Free Agents, asides from Chicago, every single one of them needs a good true Center to win championships (Chicago already have Noah), and there’s nowhere to find one. The only decent Centers in the League are Dwight, Bogut, Drew, B. Lopez, DeMarcus Cousins and Pau (when he plays Center, of course), and none of them are available this offseason, or in the foreseeable future.

Amare may be taller and have a bigger wingspan

But Boozer is definately the better post player day in, day out. If Amare could play the way he did in game 3 every day then there wouldn’t even be a conversation. But he just looks overmatched at times against real bigs.

I have a ton of respect for Boozer and if I could choose any of the 3 big free agent big men I would choose Boozer if you are looking for a #2. If you are choosing a #1 it’s Bosh for me and if you are able to get the best out of all three everyday, I would choose Amare.

For me I hope the main guys go where I think they will because I want to see Wade-Lebron and Bosh-Boozer in the ECF.

Michael Redd and Raja Bell to Lakers

i would like to see these two players become a Lakers if we are gonna loose shannon and farmar. Denver still a big threat and if they go get a big man like david lee or amare,, man they are a serious threat, i heard kenyon martin may retire cause the injury.

by Vui on Jun 27, 2010 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

How would Redd fit though

His natural position is a 3 and the lakers have arrest and now probably ebanks and if healthy walton…that sounds way too crowded and Redd is too expensive.

That’s interesting about Denver, do they have the cap space for Amare if Martin is done?

wow

that was a mistake from me, he is listed as a guard-forward which usually means a 3. It might effect his potential signing with the Heat, but with rumored interest in Joe Johnson it seems like they are not worried about pairing another 2 with Wade.

I would love for you, CA, etc. to do something along these lines because you are much more knowledgeable than me.

Wade can play point, and play it well.

But the Heat don’t really need shooters, what they need is a true big and then a solid supporting cast.

The Lakers' needs, asides from PG, aren't defined by position as much as role.

The Lakers don’t ‘need’ a 3 or 2 or 4 or 5, what they need is at least one more dead-eye shooter(???), and 1 slasher (Ebanks).

Yeah that is true to a certain extent

I think they would benefit most from a 2 who can shoot the trey and defend well, and a 5 who can actually come in and play meaningful minutes. Gasol can play the 5 very well but he adds so much more as a 4 and if we have a real 5, then he can be a part of the bench rotation with Odom and also help create different match-ups when pairing with Gasol and letting Bynum play with Odom more.

They've stated they're looking for a good veteran 5 who'll take the minimum.

In case of injury. Brendan Haywood would be the best option there, but doubt he’ll take the minimum. And I don’t know how it’s gonna work if we keep Caracter, the kid needs minutes to stay effective but is short as a 5. And that 2 you’re talking about would be Sasha, provided his performance in the Playoffs helps him rebound into ‘08 form (it’s a contract year for him, so fingers crossed).

The Thunder cannot/will not take Amare.

Recent trades have eaten into their cap space, they’ve only got 6mill space left. And they’re a defensive squad with no egos, why they would want a ‘star’ with an ego to match who doesn’t play defense is beyond me.

And Wade’s jumpshot is not better than Kobe’s. Until ‘09, he didn’t even have a jump shot. His ability to slash and penetrate is better than 31yo Kobe, and comparable to young Kobe, but his jump shot is not on the same level. As for assists, there’s the ever-present argument of how the Triangle influences assists.

ok i wasnt sure about the thunder

all i found made it look like they could, but i couldnt find much

and i thought they would bring him despite that if they saw him as the missing piece, teams can go against their mantra if their hand is forced

and with the wade/kobe thing, i agree, if they took the same exact shots then kobe would almost certainly have a better fg%, but they dont
all i’m saying is wade has a better fg%, im a laker fan and i believe in kobe and i dont want that one line to derail this post

But 'fg%' and 'shooter' don't mean the same thing.

See above.

Not really sure.

For cover pictures, there are some cropping tools. However, for article pictures, I think the only thing you can do is to downscale the source images through a photo-editing program and then upload them to the site from your hard drive instead of direct from another website. Maybe’s there’s a way to downsize in the embed codes, like there is for YouTube videos, but I’m not sure, you’d need to talk to someone who knows something about HTML for that.

Up until a week ago, the Thunder had enough cap space.

But then in trades they picked up Cole Aldrich, Mo Peterson (wtf?), and Daequan Cook (not worth losing the cap space for, either, he stunk it up with Miami), reducing their cap space from 14mill (just under 1 max contract) to 6mill (just over the MLE).

I don't think they were looking to target any big name FA

so picking up Mo Peterson and Daequan Cook’s contracts was more of get a bunch of trade picks.

Do you think

they have that much faith in Ibaka to improve, or that Krstic will step up or do they want them to split minutes…..

bosh and lebron are set to go to chicago

they will defintly be in the nba finals except for one problem…

they have no bench,,, james johnson taj gibson joe alexander… who else???

by matthewmafa on Jun 27, 2010 1:46 PM PDT reply actions

Actually, I had to go to ESPN Chicago..

Ric Bucher, you know, the guy that heard of all the draft day trades like 30 mins after we, here in the Draft Thread, knew about.

Anywho, here is the link

Obviously, the executive wants to remain anonymous because it’s not July 1st yet.

My thoughts..I don’t know about Chris Bosh joining him, but I do think LeBron ends up being a Bull. The idea of him able to play in the building where one of the Greatest played, is too much for him to pass up. He is a guy that loves to have people talk about him, loves the spotlight.

I hope it all backfires in his face.

Worldwide Wes spread that rumour.

He spread it to any team. It’s just that that executive was foolish enough to believe it.

Boozer as a top tier free agent?

That made me lol.

19.5/11.2/3.2

as compared with Bosh at 24.0/10.9/2.4.

Bosh shot 51.8%, Boozer shot 56.2%. The second scorer in Toronto was Bargnani while the second scorer in Utah was Williams. Boozer was part of a 1-2 punch, Bosh was the central focus of the team.

Neither of them are quite Dirk who isn’t quite Wade who isn’t quite LeBron, but that’s the point of tiers

Yeah, but Boozer's defense is what Charles Barkley would call

its not that they are on the same tier

its basically the top 2 tiers and the the rest….I didn’t think it was that important to get into a fourth tier….but with Gay I was pretty close to putting him into the second tier.

Yeah. I’m a cavs fan but I’m from Australia so I’m allowed to jump from team to team and not be a bandwagoner, as long as some kind of logic is applied. I’m not a fair weather fan, if the cavs this season had 10 wins or the Bulls have 10 wins with Lebron next year i’d still be a fan. I go where Lebron goes.

I’m wrong if: Phil retires and the new coach is an idiot.

lol!

My .02

Lebron: New Jersey
Bosh: New Jersey
Wade: Miami
Amare: Chicago
Johnson: Miami
Boozer: Miami
Dirk: Dallas
Gay: New Jersey

Lebron would give his left nut to get out of Kobe’s shadow so he won’t go to Chicago to forever be under MJ’s. Plus, the new owner in New Jersey is willing to spent any amount to make it happen and along with the Jay-Z connection, I think he is as good as there and Bosh will follow.

by kingofatlanta on Jun 28, 2010 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

So, new york gets nothing, lol.

that would be hilarious.

lebron, bosh, gay, harris and lopez would be scary.

so would wade, johnson and boozer.

but you still have to fill the rest of the roster, and i dont think they will have much money after they sign their big name players. the rest of the team could be srubs.
