NBA Draft Open Thread
An NBA draft drinking game? Are you people sick?!
Actually, that's an idea so crazy, it just might work. Your triggers consist of whenever someone on the talking electronic box mentions:
- Blake Griffin,
- "Good value,"
- "Athleticism,"
- "One and done,"
- The Lakers, for whatever reason.
Finish the drink in your hand if anyone cracks a joke about Minnesota taking a point guard, and do a full shot if someone mentions Kwame Brown. You have your instructions.
UPDATE: With the 43rd pick, the Lakers have selected Devin Ebanks of West Virginia. He's a 6'8" forward. Read about him here and here.
UPDATE II: With the 58th pick, the Lakers have selected Derrick Caracter of UTEP.

I'm following too,
and I’m super excited about it! I’m also a UK fan, so I do have several good reasons…
me too,
as both are rumored to be considering Cousins.
If Cousins doesn’t get picked up by one of them, I really can’t see him falling past the Kings.
But you never know if there could be trades made that involve our Lakers
You made us proud Lake Show! 2009 and 2010 BACK 2 BACK CHAMPS!
Ah. I'm basketball fan first. I've seen most of these guys play in college.
Plus, you never know.
I haven't had an interest in the draft in years
I guess I have the Lakers and their constant winning to thank for that.
:P

alright, im dumb when it come to this...
today they are gonna pick wall, turnet, etc??
"You are asking me if LeBron is going to New York?, I’m trying to tell you in a polite way, I don’t give a shit"
By all accounts,
it’s Wall, Turner, then possible chaos. There’s been speculation that the Nets are trying to move the 3rd pick, possibly for Danny Granger & Indiana’s 10th pick.
"I want to win now, not 3 years from now. That's my stance." - Kevin Burkhardt
headline: interesting move
Wizards take the 17th pick and Hinrich from Chicago to have more options and allow Chicago to clear cap space. Trade cannot consummate until July 8th. Gilbert, Miller are probably a little more in play with this move.
It’s similar to their earlier move to by the Heat to trade the 18th pick and Daequan Cook to the Thunder for the 32nd pick to improve cap space (and you don’t have to sign second rounders which also helps cap space).
Not as big of a topic here, but on the K bros blog a lot of people have been interested in Hinrich. When pressed they all know his contract is way to expensive for what he offers.
It would be hilarious if they missed out on all the big names
And just a bunch of 1-2 million dollar contracts on their roster.

Picks will be involved. The trade allows the Miami HEAT to buyout Ryan Gomes, thus getting more cap room.

Chad Ford is right
The best drafters group the best talent in tiers at various positions. So you select the best player at a position of need in a certain tier. If there is only one player available in the highest tier, then you take that guy, even if he doesn’t fill a position of need.

although Orton wasn’t a starter, yeah, pretty much. : (
But, we do have replacements coming (though not Wall/ Cousins caliber) so don’t count us out just yet. And, having 5 first round draft picks doesn’t exactly hurt recruiting. High school kids (at the ripe old age of 18) want exposure and to play for the best, so obviously UK is where all the high school kids want to be

by The Dude Abides on Jun 24, 2010 7:20 PM PDT reply actions
Minny earlier traded the #23 and #56 to Washington for #30 and #35
Because Washington wanted Booker at #23. I assumed Minny did it because a center would still be there at #30, yet they chose another wing to back up Brewer, Wes Johnson, and Martell Webster.

All the mocks had him in the high teens to mid-20s
He’s 7-2, and this is what Chad Ford said about him:
“Alabi measured as one of the tallest and longest players in the draft, and he showed a nice skill game and a terrific motor in drills. Some scouts are comparing him to Dikembe Mutombo. I don’t think Alabi has the same sort of rebounding and shot-blocking ability, but he does have a similar demeanor and presence on the court.”

yeah,
I watch a hell of a lot of college basketball, thank-you-very-much, but that certainly doesn’t make me an expert on who is going to be a good pro or not. Geez. Oh, and for what it’s worth, I think Ebanks is a hell of a person and a nice little college player, but not sure about him in the NBA. Two totally different games.
Oh, and btw, people are a lot more receptive when they aren’t being sneered at or when their opinions aren’t being mocked. Thanks.
lol we're probably going to wave him first thing next season

So is Dorell Wright
And Wright shot 39% from three and played SG, SF, and PG for the Heat last season. Alabi was BY FAR the best player available. If Andrew gets hurt next season, we would have been able to give minutes to a guy in his early 20s who is actually longer than Andrew.

Well... Alabi?
At 43, you swing for the fences, especially when a guy with upside is still available.
What you DON’T do is draft a guy at a position where you already have numbers.
The half-crazed ramblings of a Lakers fanatic living in Japan...
They drafted a wing defender. he might spell Artest or Kobe for a few min.
ALABI is a project at best who is still not drafted
Go big or go home. Picking Ebanks is weak sauce. Solomon Alabi maybe raw, but there is much upside.
The young man has tons of upside. If you’re drafting for a defender, draft Stanley Robinson. He can actually shoot the ball.
And it's the FORTY THIRD PICK!
There’s absolutely no reason to play it safe.
Not like there’s a huge chance of them making the roster come regular season…

here is what the experts are saying:
Compares To: CORY BREWER, Minnesota — Like Brewer, Ebanks is strictly a role player. He needs to be in an up-tempo attack to feel comfortable with his game, but I doubt if he has the explosiveness needed to be effective on the NBA fast break. He seems to lack confidence as a perimeter shooter (made 8 of 70 three-pointers) and with that fragile-looking frame and obvious lack of power, he is going to have huge problems getting his inside game going vs. the more physical forwards at the next level. To me, he looks like D-League material, but for some reason, teams like Minnesota and Memphis are looking at him to add small forward depth. Whoever told this kid he could be a lottery pick sold him a pack of goods.
In Kobe we trust!
again, he's gonna be a defender to come off the bench for certain players

Ummm... no.
I disagree with an opinion – and that was shared by several others here.
Someone ELSE had a different opinion – that of itself is fine. But when he categorizes everyone who disagrees with him as “an idiot”… then yes – I’ll take issue with that.
Hell, as far as “college players” go, there would be dozens of people here who know beyond my meager knowledge on them. I pretty much know only what I’ve read.
What I do know is that I’m disappointed with the pick at 43 – and I’ve listed why. Again, there are others who share that opinion.
What I do think is pathetic is to jump over someone, and throwing out an insult that’s pretty ‘crap’ on several levels – because you feel you’re in some way entitled to do so.
Disagree with me, but at least attempt to be civil.

Here's the Draft Express link to Alabi
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Solomon-Alabi-551/
“It is impossible to discuss Alabi as a prospect without mentioning his physical tools, since they’ve driven the majority of his success on the college level and account for much of his NBA intrigue. Enjoying ideal height and a big wingspan for a center at the next level, Alabi has continued to add weight to his frame, something he’ll need to continue to do in order to maximize his already impressive athletic profile. Couple his continued development both as a player and athlete with his already solid leaping ability and mobility, and Alabi has all the tools to be a high-level defensive player in the League.”
They mentioned some negatives, too…but damn, he would have been the 43rd pick.

Hey Guys
I run the UTEP site- Just wanted to say I think you will be pleased with Caracter- a true value pick so late in the show. His low post footwork is really impressive, he’s a very capable scorer. I think when you see him, you’ll see that he’s not Big Baby 2.0, I liken him a lot more to Dajuan Blair.
Also, his “Caracter Issues” are well documented. Just know that he was never arrested. He never committed a crime and he is not at all a thug. His issues at Louisville were the result of perceived laziness and attitude problems- Possibly the result of him being worshipped as a lottery pick since the 8th grade by local and national media.
I don’t know if he’s truly matured. I do know that he isn’t a thug.
I think, at that point in the draft, you could have done a lot worse.

I go to SMU, watch a fair amount of CUSA ball, and the kid can play, he’s just a bit of a thug and a bit overweight…in my opinion, if he focuses and dedicated himself to his game and becoming a proffesional, he has potential
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Immaturity was a problem as his weight was up and down throughout his college career.
Coach Pitino didn’t particular like him and kicked him off the team. I think Caracter has turned the corner. He has grown up a bit while at El Paso. He’s a good shooter from midrange and has passable footwork in the post. I think he is a legit scoring option in the post for a couple of minutes. Defensively, he’s……..aiight.
i feel that down the line if luke walton
wanted to coach, he would probably be a pretty good coach.

Guys, cmon stop whining
You guys act like we don’t have the best starting 5 in the whole damn NBA, and we’re still going into free agency looking at guards, We already have a great frontline, now lets get some veteran Pgs that will get a lot of playing time
"I don't mind being the goat. I don't mind being the villain, hated. I've been that my whole career, so it's not like that's anything new. I don't mind people jumping on the bandwagon or jumping off. I just focus on playing the game." -Ron Artest
Boston's starting 5 is also undefeated I heard
"Love me or hate me; it's one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fade-away, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. Hate that. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons." - Kobe Bryant
if boston's starting five
is broken up with Allen’s departure then there would be no end to that stupid statistic.
"I once convinced a woman that I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it" - Saul Goodman
Well
We already beat them, we can only get better, boston doesnt really have any young players besides rondo, perkins, and big baby. But with the exception of Rondo, that’s nothing if you ask me

exactly my point
the draft is for teams that have trouble attracting FA’s. (minny, sac, clippers, washington, etc.)

That’s a huge salary already being forked out.
Is there any indication that LA are actually looking at guards? Beyond us all being hopeful (I remain hopeful…)?
The half-crazed ramblings of a Lakers fanatic living in Japan...
yeah, Mitch said
that they are looking for backcourt depth.
"I once convinced a woman that I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it" - Saul Goodman
Now...
Hopefully that means signing a decent PG. And not just something available at the right price.
The half-crazed ramblings of a Lakers fanatic living in Japan...
Steve Blake or Javaris Crittenton seem like the only options since they are cheap and the latter
knows the offense a bit.
Or getting a bunch of SG's
that would actually be kind of depressing/funny.
"I once convinced a woman that I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it" - Saul Goodman
The argument is that Alabi was projected between 18 and 21
And he was still available at 43. What if Drew hurts his knee again next season, and we haven’t re-signed Mbenga?
by The Dude Abides on Jun 24, 2010 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions
*What if
That’s a key word. Bynum has time to work on his conditioning and could find a way to become less injury prone. And even if we did resign mbenga, he would come off the bench, so we still have Gasol at C and Odom back in the starting 5. We’d probably use the fat guy we got in the draft, if he makes the team. And like i said there is still free agency…

Can we like the NFL sign players that wasn’t drafted right away or is there a process you must go through to get a player that wasn’t drafted. If we can sign some of these guys (guards) maybe we still can get a quality one from there.

If they went undrafted, you can sign them to an unguaranteed contract to come to training camp.
And then if they make it through that without getting cut, they get the rookie’s minimum.

#1a: Group equally talented players into tiers, even if they play different positions
Then take a player from the highest tier who fills your need. If there is only one player remaining in the high tier, then you take him even if he doesn’t fill a need. Alabi was by far the best player available at #43. He was projected between 18 and 21.

Thats great...
But i think the Lakers would rather stick with Shannon Brown. He is very athletic, has an idea of the triangle now and will have all summer to keep learning. He is a fan favorite, and he gives us momentum with a great dunk. I wonder if we could get brown/fish/blake?

to anybody who thinks we should have drafted a guard
the only guards who might have cracked the lakers rotation are Wall, Armon Johnson, and Bledsoe, all of whom went in the first round.
"If you have a debate with a scholar, you can win. If you have a debate with an ignorant person, you will definitely lose."
"Lets go for for it again"- Kobe Bryant, 2010 Championship ceremony.
Of course, Wall and Bledsoe would crack the rotation. Johnson? Not so much.
It isn’t about draft a guard and having him crack the rotation. The Lakers could develop said guard while he watches from the bench in his first ala Andrew Bynum.
Oh I see what happened.
Wait ’til the new guy leaves and then post.
But seriously, what did I miss?
I'm here to talk about the past.
at first David Kahn was shitty
then there was much anger over the lakers skipping on alibi. many people here, not satisfied with the lakers pick.

Wall went #1!! Ha ha ha, thought that’d shock you. : )
Oh, and other than that the boys are just fighting with eachother over whether Ebanks is a good choice or nor, who watches the most college basketball, and who’s opinion is like a female body part, yada, yada, yada….. : )
I thought Mitch would definitly go big man in the middle and then go back-up guard. He shocked a lot of fans by going with 2 forwards. With Bynum getting hurt the way he is I would have bet the house he wouild have gotten another 7 footer. There was a couple of guards projected to come to us that was still on the board and we got neither one.Hope Mitch knows what he is doing with this draft this year.Being a fan I’ll still support but I’m kind of disappointed with 2 forwards.

Slumming from the Rocky Mountains
Checking to see if you had more current information on Caracter than what we’ve been reading or not reading over in Denver.
"Maxie Miner Rules"
"Remember the Alamo", "Remember the Maine", "Remember the Hunter Trade"
"Contenders commit to building a champion; pretenders end up getting bit right on their pick axe"
Apparently
We’re not handing him over to Denver..

Cool quotes from the picks and Mitch. I like these picks considering Alabi apparently had red flags.
"We had him going a little bit earlier in the draft," said Kupchak. "Of the two or three guys that were on (our draft board), we felt most comfortable with (Caracter)."
Caracter spent two seasons at Louisville before transfering to UTEP, a move that mandated his sitting out the 2008-09 school year, before claiming the seventh most rebounds in his conference at El Paso.
"He got into much better shape (at UTEP)," said Kupchak. "He still has to work on his conditioning, but he’s lively and he can shoot the ball a little bit with some range (12-15 feet). Good rebounder."
"We did project (Ebanks) higher in the draft, we thought he’d be drafted much higher," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "We’re pleased. He’s an athletic small forward, a good defensive player (who) has potential to grow … really good upside."
"Lamar Odom, my uncle grew up with him," said Ebanks. "He’s from my neighborhood, Ron Artest (too). I live two minutes from Ron Artest and 10 minutes from Lamar. I see those guys all the time. Being able to play with them is a great opportunity."
"I’m willing to learn," he said. "They just won the NBA championship, so I have a whole bunch of stuff to learn about the NBA and what better team than the Lakers?"
"Toughness, my length," Ebanks responded. "I don’t have a problem guarding the (other team’s) best player. I take defense very seriously and I take it personally."
"Just getting better," he said of his expectations. "I’m playing for the best team in the world. I want to go in there and try to learn from the veterans, and hopefully my career can take off from there."

Cmon unless these guys do really well they aren’t going to get big minutes, so they wont be as much a factor. They are for now our new taco unit, and we still have FA. These guys need about 2 years or so to grow, and our best players are in their prime so i see no problems. Look on the bright side, guys.

wouldn't hurt
to reduce the starters’ playing times by a few minutes. I prefer them all to play 36 and less.
Well
If we actually played to our potential during the regular season then the Lakers wouldn’t have to worry about that and i wouldn’t get any more heaert attacks. That’s just how the lakers are…

Some of it was injury/rotation
Not much that can be done about that. We do have Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and Luke Walton on our team, after all. They always miss a minimum of 10 games each due to injury, except the strange year in which Bynum played all 82.

Can't wait to read the excuses why the Nugs went "crocodile arms" tonight

Crocodile Arms meaning Short Arms and Deep Pockets
You can never seem to grab the wallet when it’s needed when you have such short arms like that.
The Nugs didnt do a single stupid thing all night but the Denver talking heads will continue to keep saying that Denver is almost as good as the Lakers… ifs and buts…
While at the same time the rest of the conference, including the Lakers keep making deals to improve themselves.
"Maxie Miner Rules"
"Remember the Alamo", "Remember the Maine", "Remember the Hunter Trade"
"Contenders commit to building a champion; pretenders end up getting bit right on their pick axe"
Although I think Willie Warren would have been a better pick
Let’s wait and see what these guys can do BEFORE we start criticizing them and Mitch. Apparently, Ebanks is a lockdown defender and ready to learn and contribute as a role player. Alabi was waaaaaaaay too raw for me, like an even LESS developed version of Hasheem Thabeet though I would have loved to have had him.
My thoughts exactly.

You're not reading it right man...
No-one’s ripped Ebanks at all.
Well… not really (there have been questions about his FG% – but not from me). I tend to agree that as a #43 pick, he’s pretty good.
The question has been as to whether there was better talent on the boards. I think (and it is only my opinion) that with such a low pick, you swing for the fences, and draft a guy with a whole lotta upside… rather than someone who you think might maybe one day make the rotation.

And he’s a very good one. He’s a terrific shooter, though his percentage was low (in part because it’s always around 45%, but also because he hasn’t played much in the last few years). He gets steals and can distribute. Injuries and high salary are MAJOR concerns.

1st priority is still getting Phil back
After the coaching issue is addressed is the only time the Lakers should retool/revamp the roster coz if Phil ain’t back are the Lakers still going to run the triangle? Are the players they have suited to the style of play they will use next season?
Get Phil back 1st. Then we can worry about improving the lineup.
I agree and have a very particular reason why
from hoopshype.com
Bosh indicated having a proven coach could play a factor in his decision about where to play next season. "The coach, pretty much, is the leader of your team,‘’ Bosh said. "And if you have a good coach, that gives you better chances in certain situations. I think a lot of guys want to play for a good coach. And to be put in the right position, that has a lot to do with it. You want to look at situations for winning and that’s one of them. So I think a well-led team is very important in the decision-making process.’’ SI.com

Apparently Alabi has Hepatitis B...
…or had it and has gotten over it. Or he could be a carrier of it without symptoms. That red flag sent him from the 15-25 range all the way down to 50.

Maybe Mitch didn't want Alabi and any Laker teammate to cross swords with a groupie ;-)
Which would mean it’s possible to pass it on.

B isn't terrible from sex
But with the anal that’s all the craze in the NBA (because most NBA players don’t want to be Shawn Kemp with 25 illegitimate children from 19 different women), blood is more likely to be in other fluids and then they allow Hep B contraction.
From needlesticks it’s a very serious issue, very common and easy to transmit. The bane of health care workers.
