PrintUnless you live under a rock, you are probably aware that the World Cup is happening right about now. About one hour ago, it officially tipped off. Despite this being a site targeted towards basketball, and specifically the Lakers, I have a feeling a lot of you will want to spend some time here devoted to that event. I've created this thread so that you can all enjoy it together. But, I have one huge request to make of all the members of SSR.
PLEASE DON'T TALK ABOUT THE WORLD CUP ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE SITE!!
Here's the deal: Despite my being as passionate a Laker lover as you will find, the World Cup is literally second to none in my sports world. Unfortunately, with both SSR to mind and a full time job to not get fired from, I can't afford to watch most of it's games as they occur. However, thanks to the magic of DVR, I don't have to miss a second of the action, and it can be almost as special for me as it would live, if I can keep my ignorance of the results beforehand.
That's where you come in. I can stay away from ESPN, CNNSI, and any other sports related website for an entire month, or specifically avoid areas of the site I know will discuss these matters. But I can't stay away from SSR. Comments must be monitored, conversations must be participated in, and with the Lakers in the Finals, I can't just take a break. So, if on every thread somebody starts talking about what's going on in the Cup, it will completely ruin my World Cup experience. Please help me to avoid that. Anytime you want to comment on the World Cup, just hop on over to this thread to do so. That's all I ask.
I back it up with the authority vested in me by SB Nation. Will someone get banned for talking about the World Cup in any other thread? It's highly unlikely. But there will be warnings, and if I do have to warn someone more than twice about it, they will get increasingly hostile in nature. Is this an abuse of my power? Yes. Is this selfish? Probably, though I would imagine I'm not the only one who would like to peruse SSR without getting clues as to what's going on in the World Cup. I don't care. We work quite hard to provide you the best team blog we can, all I'm asking is that you not ask me to sacrifice the best sporting event in the world (IMO) to do so.
Thanks for your time, and if a couple of you wouldn't mind giving this the requisite number of recs to make sure this stays top, it would be greatly appreciated. Now, enjoy the World Cup and comment away ... just don't do it anywhere else. =)

Did anyone else think Mexico was cheated out of a goal in the first half?
The scored a goal, but it did not count because the refs said a Mexican player was offside. On replay, it showed the Mexican player clearly wasn’t offside. Mistakes happen, but this was kind of obvious.

Argentina is my favorite team at the World Cup, but i've always been a fan of Spain since the 90's.
Spain will win the World Cup because they have been playing the best football for the past 3 years. Their offense and midfield is just unstoppable.
I feel bad for France but their coach is an idiot, I don’t know how he didn’t get fired after Euro 2008, personally I think he has some secret for the president of the French FA.

I remember from in the 90’s the team was always LOADED with talent to win every tournament they entered but somehow just could not gel enough to put together the results needed. But it’s a different story now. Check this the team is so stacked that they’ve left behind guys like Jose Antonio Reyes, David Albelda, Marcos Senna, Vicente, and Bojan Krkic. These guys could start inmost teams around the world.
Anyway as I said I love Argentina but Spain WILL win the World Cup

Pedro is playing better than him though. And Senna is more of a holding player, and Spain likes to use Iniesta, Xavi and Alonso for attack.

I know Senna is a holding player but he was their best player at Euro 2008.
It was because he protected the 4 so well that guys like Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Torres, and David Villa were able to attack and destroy all before them with reckless abandon.
Bojan couldn’t have made this team, not yet anyway, give him a few more years.
I’m pissed that they left Vicente, this guy is a devastating winger at Valencia for the past 8 years or so and he’s still young (not yet 30).
Is it just me or does it seem that the fates are conspiring to help Brazil advance to the second round? By that I mean there are key injuries to KEY players on the other teams in the group eg Didier Drogba with Ivory Coast, and Nani with Portugal.
I’m so hoping the Brazilians don’t make it through, it would be the perfect lesson to their coach who left the great Ronaldinho out of the team.

i thought it was just one defender (non-keeper) keeping a player on-side. that makes it kinda easy to run an offside trap dont it? plus, you just keep a defender and keeper back by the goal and hold the line up top and guys can still be called off? that change sucks, seriously

The U.S can finish off first and most likely play the loser of the Germany vs Ghana, or they could finish second and play the winner of that same match.
Still, Both England and Slovenia are very much alive in Group C.
Germany, Ghana and Serbia all have 3 points in Group D and we can see lots of different scenarios play out.
One thing is for sure, with the Finals over, the next 4 weeks are very World Cup heavy for me.

We have as much pride as every other team in the sweet 16, and we’ve worked too hard and come too far to be knocked about by the same team that beat us four years ago. Tim Howard is only an average World Cup keeper. Friedel was a superstar. I guarantee that first goal by Ghana doesn’t go in if Brad is playing.

Yes, I finally...FINALLY...saw the movie Fight Club
And I have to say, that movie is just whack. Just completely, utterly, poo-flinging insane. But I’m glad I saw it. At least now I understand why California Waves keeps making people think of that movie.

I just came back from a friend’s house watching the game on a big screen TV…
Well, Ghana deserved it. They played way better than we did. They were bigger, stronger, faster, and smarter. They spaced the field, made good passes, and never resorted to desperate shots. Yeah, they shamelessly milked the clock in the end and the ref let them do what they wanted, but that’s our fault for not taking care of business as extra time began. Seriously, I don’t like to think of a team in the Elite 8 that gives up goals in the first few minutes after kickoff.
I don’t think Ghana’s done yet. I think they could give Uruguay a serious run for their money and reach the semifinals. But God help them if they run into Brazil.

But I told ya so. They need someone who can control the ball in front of the back 4. Someone who can direct traffic and feed the the midfield (Donovan) so that then the strikers get good clean passes.
They also lacked a bit of focus and you can’t play from behind every game. Sooner of later, you’re gonna lose.

brazil seemingly always gets a weak draw, whether it’s group play or knockout games. it’s only tough opponent was Portugal and that was a draw. holland will be it’s first true test, but if they beat them then they play either uruguay or ghana. argentina, meanwhile will face a tough german team and possibly tournament favorite, spain, if they advance.
