Guide to reading: Lengthy post just in time for the playoffs.
If you don’t know, you will have a better idea now. I have a big dislike for referees and the refereeing system. Before I get into why and what needs to be changed, I just would like for everyone to be on the same page to have a better understanding of why I felt the need to make this lengthy post.
My background: Age: 24, College level basketball experience to coaching currently.
I’ve been playing basketball since I can remember and will continue for the rest of my life, basketball means that much to me. One thing I see needs changing is the refereeing system in basketball for all levels. What happened to just grabbing a ball, going to a park, picking your teammates and making your own calls as you play with no foul shots, just exchange of the ball when rules are broken. Best team wins other team steps off the court, what happened to that? Do we really need refs? Are Free throws really needed? I say no because how many players, coaches and conspiracy theories do we need complaining about calls and throwing referees under the bus before they do something different? This is 2010 and I’m calling for a total change.
And I’m not talking about tinkering with the system like add more refs, take away some refs or use more instant replay; I’m talking about getting rid of the referees and their system for good. Yes this is my plea for everyone to agree and get rid of the inconsistent calls because as a fan and a player, I’m tired of the miss calls, non calls, make-up calls and the excuse of them being human so they are allowed to make mistakes. No, no, not really, just try some of these things at work and see how quickly you find yourself on the unemployment line, you get no makeup work days or excuses for lateness, you either be there or be damn out of a pay check. I have seen enough bad calls to know free throws do affect the game especially the flow of a game. What I always say is put yourself in a basketball player shoes to feel what it is like to get slapped in the head, slapped on the arm and not getting not one whistle against that player then that same player goes on the other end and gets brushed by one of your teammates but gets a call. Do you know how demoralizing that is? And yeah I know what some are thinking, the aggressive team or person gets the call or if you just attack back the same way you will get the call or its one teams home court so expect refs favoring the home team more. No, Hell NO, all these excuses are unacceptable because a foul is a foul, if I slap you and you get a call, when you slap me I want my call also bottom line, if a player breaks a foul rule the refs should call it but we see it time and time again refs don’t, refs pick and choose which calls they want to call. I hear this excuse also that if refs called all foul calls then the game would be long so that’s how I came to the conclusion that basketball players don’t need a referee, if it is going to cause this much excuses for calls made and calls missed. I have seen enough of Team B shooting 15 free throws for a half to the other Team A 5 free throws, is this really fair? Each point adds up in my book and every point is needed and counts so if one team is consistently getting free trips to the line and the other team is not then there is a problem. I don’t want to hear the excuses of aggressiveness because that same Team A that shot 5 free throws will end the game with 18 trips to the free throw line to Team B 25, meaning referees decided to blow there whistles a little more to make it seem the calls were even. But just think if your team was down at the half by 10 those make up free throws came a little too late, your team in still in for a loss because of the early generated fouls accumalated by Team B. To get to the point, the refs aren’t helpful and I think they truly are hurting the game so what I would want is a free flowing game where players make the call, no free throws and teams just exchange the ball when a call is made. Now you have eliminated the blame on the refs, the excuses and now talent really tells wins and losses. Not a bad ref call or miss call, you can genuinely look at your teammates and blame them for not getting the job done. I think this will work because anything is better them watching the refs miss call after call and not being able to do or say anything because ref calls are final. I just think having to live with referee mistakes can be costly at times and be the difference between winning and losing, I hate losing and at the end of the day if it’s my talent that failed me, I can live with that but if its calls that don’t go in my favor for some reason, I cannot live with it because you play the game to win not worry about what calls are the refs going to call today. With me or against me, all I know is I have gotten my point across.
