2010-2011 Season

This season has obviously exposed the Lakers roster weaknesses. Not saying they cant or wont repeat, but the road to the title is going to be harder this year. Regardless of what happens this post season, Mitch definetely must do some serious work this summer.

Here's what needs to be addressed this offseason:

The Point Gaurd spot: We all know Fish has lost a step, or two,...or 5. However Fish aint comin off the bench anytime soon. He shoots too much, gets beat by every PG in the league, and old. However, He is one of the few guys on the roster who can hit shots. (good, open shots). His experience does come in handy every once in a while. ( the shot against the magic, cough cough). Hes earned the right to start. I just think his minutes should be lessened...Alot.

Jordan and Shannon: The Farmar-Brown backcourt duo cant go on anymore. One of them has to go. I anticipate Shannon will opt out this summer to go play for some mediocre team that will give him minutes. He's already used the Lakers to make a name for himself, doesnt need them anymore. Farmar is also drooling over playing for some bad team that will give him playing time. It was obvious from the start that these guys would have to part ways sooner or later. Young guys arent willing to take a limited role for the better good of the team. Its just that simple.

3 point shooting: The Lakers roster is full of guys who can hit wide open shots once in a blue moon; Fish, Artest, Odom, even Jordan and Shannon. The problem, no 3 point aces. No Horry's or Steve Kerrs. Theres no guy to come off the bench and ammediately alter the opposing teams defense. Oh and Sasha. When someone mentions Maria Sharapova Sasha can smirk and say "yeah i hit that". The problem is Sasha cant say hes hit many shots this season, or the last season. its safe to safe his short lived shooting machine is out of order.

The rest of the bench: Take out Lamar, and our bench wouldnt qualify for the NIT. Theyre that bad. It needs shooting and more athleticism. Here are some free agents I think the Lakers should take interest in this summer:

Rasual Butler: tall, athletic, can hit shots, instant offense. Hes everything the Lakers bench needs basically rolled into one player.

Rafer Alston: The guy is old no doubt. He has issues as well. But he takes care of the rock and can get to the hole and dish.

Hakeem Warrick: Young and athletic. 6'9 swingman who does a little bit of everything. I like UPS but this guy has 5 inches on him.

Luther Head: Solid 3 point shooter

Any more suggestions?

You really overestimate the NIT

Our bench would beat the crap out of any of those teams

In any case, your concerns are pretty much on point, although I’m not sure I agree with your set of choices for the point guard slot. Raymond Felton, Earl Watson, Steve Blake, and Luke Ridnour would all be superior choices. I’m also highly doubtful that Warrick or Butler would be willing to sign for the minimum (unless it was a “let’s go win a championship” motive), especially when nearly the full MLE might be necessary to sign the point guard we need.

That is the biggest issue when it comes to improving the bench and PG position

finances. Do you think the next year’s expiring contracts and Farmar falling off the books is not enough cap relief to sign the PG the Lakers need?

That depends on Buss

Can’t really know for sure. That said, Vujacic is a far more attractive expiring contract than Morrison simply because he can actually play, so that’s a useful asset to have.

good point

I didn’t know the Lakers still owned the rights to Morrison. That means the only player that will have to compete for if he gets good offers for is Farmar. I have a feeling that the same thing is going to happen with Farmar as it did with Turiaf. Meaning that he will get a big offer that is too unreasonable for the Lakers to match.

Uh, Morrison is an unrestricted free agent after this season

I was referring to Vujacic’s expiring next year as versus Morrison’s this year.

And in any case, I seriously doubt Farmar gets an offer above $4 million/year. There’s plenty of good point guards available in free agency before him, and especially in this summer, no team wants to tie up their cap space for seven days while teams are snatching up free agents left and right. I’d bet he comes back for the QO.

Vujacic's expiring contract is going to a big bargaining chip for this team.

Any number above what Farmar is currently getting would be over payment. I can especially agree with no team willing to tie up so much money on someone that might or might not sign with your team.

For the most part you're pretty much on point

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Fish has earned the right to start..You earn the right to start by producing imo..As far as that goes he hasnt earned anything this year..People dislike Farmar but he’s playing at a higher level than Fish with fewer minutes this season..

There are options for us in the offseason..I would hope Philly releases Jason Kapono or we make a trade to get him..
Brad Miller would also be a great albeit old pickup who actually would fit quite nicely in the triangle with his ability to hit the mid range jumper and is a solid rebounder /defender
depending on the money they want Q-Rich, Eddie House,Kyle Korver, Mike Miller, and Louis amundson, Felton, Blake and ridnour.

CJ Watson or Anthony Morrow also come to mind

Both are restricted free agents

Morrow especially will be near-impossible to get from Golden State. He’s probably worth more than the MLE.

I like those guys you mentioned

Eddie House, CJ Watson, Korver etc…

What about Raja Bell though? hes a guy who can defend and hit open shots. Hes tough as we laker fans know.

He could be a James Posey type player. We need guys who do all the intangibles, ie take charges, get on the floor for loose balls

Fisher "is one of the few guys on the roster who can hit shots."

That’s… that’s just not true. Fish has the worst shooting numbers of any rotation regular.

Some stats have even shown that this year out all the PGs in the league

Fisher is statistically one if not THE worst PG in the league.

Steve Blake makes a lot of sense

UFA, cheap, plays w/good efficiency, both offensively and defensively.

Anthony Morrow could be had; Reggie Williams has a better knack for Nellie Ball and will be probably usurp Morrow’s role with the team.

Anybody like Ogilvy in the draft to replace Mbenga or Powell?

by GRICE on Apr 4, 2010 5:20 PM PDT reply actions

I seriously doubt the Warriors don't match any reasonable offer to Morrow

Even the full MLE (which is all we can offer) would be good value for someone with his skills.

he actually hasnt got alot of burn time when ellis is playing.

recently, he seems to be getting a good chunk of minutes (15 – 17) when ellis has been hurt.

Regardless, my point stands

There’s no way they don’t match any offer we could possibly give him. He’ll take the QO and wait for unrestricted free agency.

Just heard that Channing Frye will be becoming a free agent this summer.

He would be a nice addition.

Too expensive for us

Namely because he won’t play for the minimum and he’s searching for a big contract with a more featured role with a team.

He's definitely worth near the MLE

He simply wouldn’t have the same value on the Lakers because our frontcourt is so crowded. Honestly though, our Powell replacement doesn’t have to light the world on fire — Rob Kurz would be more than plenty.
