Lakers-Magic Open Thread

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic, Mar 7, 2010 11:30 AM PST

You know that streak of the Lakers' having not lost three straight in the Pau Gasol era? Yeah. I hope no one's too attached to it.

Do three straight shots of something upon any mention of:

  • How the Lakers have never lost three straight in the Pau Gasol era,
  • "Dog days,"
  • "Finals rematch,"
  • Kobe Bryant vs. Vince Carter, or
  • A "playoff type atmosphere."

Make yourself at home.

great

Team meeting, Kobe talks about defensive focus, Artest gets a wild Defensive themed haircut….. and our first possession, Bynum and Gasol don’t communicate on who’s got Lewis, and second possession, Bynum doesn’t step up help Artest.

just a week-long grudge against Bynum

although he just proved me wrong with the block on Bynum, I was going to say that if it wasn’t for his “size”, Drew is bad at defense. And that’s on a rating of Excellent, Good, Average, Bad, and Sucks.

I’m thankful I get to stay home today so I can watch the game on ABC.

every game is different.

I love the NBA, but every fan must realize that officiating is never the same from game to game, quarter to quarter, play to play. I watched the Nets-Knicks last night….. and well, the only thing I can say is, I thought NCAA officiating was bad.

Pryzbilla reruptures tendon, tough luck.

Trail Blazers center Joel Przybilla will undergo surgery on his right patella tendon in the next few days.

Przybilla re-ruptured his right patella tendon Saturday morning after slipping in the shower at his home in Milwaukee, Wis.

He returned to Portland today to undergo an MRI, which revealed the rupture.

Przybilla originally ruptured the tendon in a Dec. 22 game at Dallas. He underwent season-ending surgery on Dec. 24 and was in Milwaukee rehabilitating the injury.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

It's official, we're not going to win the championship

No Phil Jackson team in LA has ever won the championship after losing 3 games in a row during the season.

I’m also pretty sure that, but don’t have the evidence at the moment, that nearly, if not all, of the past 25 NBA Champions didn’t have a losing streak longer than 2 games during the regular season.

I’ve been having a feeling this wouldn’t be LA’s year. Doesn’t mean it’s over. We still got 2-3 more years with this core (even including Artest). I just feel like this is Dallas’ year. Kidd needs a title to cement his HoF status. Dirk needs atleast one to catch up to KG (or surpass him, IMO). And we can’t have Cleveland winning the title this year, because that would kill all of the drama this summer (well, most of it).

Also, the defense looks OK, they gave up under 100 points, the Lakers need to integrate Artest, once they do, they go back to playing the real triangle, and Pau will be more involved as well. The offense is all Kobe all the time, but I’m not sure the triangle would look much better right now.

Well, we can put it this way

We’re a missed freebie dunk by Odom and two toes on the line by Kobe and Fisher away from winning. Can’t have all of them.

Orlando could have had the same solace if they lost

Because if the bad foul call on Dwight Howard, the bad call on Lewis for a moving screen when Fisher just ran into him while Lewis held the ball in the pinch post, and the bad call wiping away Pietrus alley oop off the inbounds from Barnes

I'd extend the QO

Doesn’t hurt. Depends a lot on the offer sheets that other teams give him. I wouldn’t pay anything more than $4 million/year.

Not a Jackson guard

He just doesn’t fit in the PJ triangle. He gets rubbed out on every screen, and has no post game at all.

Yeah, but he's a serviceable backup point

With high upside. That’s at least worth extending the QO. Now, we still need to address the position in the summer otherwise, but that doesn’t mean we don’t keep Farmar.

In another offense I think Farmar would be deadly

The triangle is hard on point guards like Farmar. He’s not doing so well, looks out of sorts, but personally I think he’s played some of his best ball up until the last couple of games.

but we cannot overpay him (though with the way he plays now, i dont think there’d be any danger of that xD)

by oxymor0n on Mar 7, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

Extend a qualifying offer. If a decides to give him four million per year, let him go.

The Lakers could trade Vujacic for Marcus Banks, if that trade is still available. He would be a quality back-up.

by oxymor0n on Mar 7, 2010 2:55 PM PST up reply actions

lets see

kobe was aite…took too many outside shots, shoulda drove more and get to the line. fisher was letting nelson drive too much, thus resutling in help deffense, which gets outside shotters open,. bynum was doing his best on defense and some of the calls against him were crap, and he wasnt really thee on offense. Pau was…well…i think he was crap because he didnt do anything on offense and not mhc on defense. artest was HORRIBLE…on both ends of the floor, letting carter go off on him, and missing WIDE OPEN 3-pointers…all i know is that ariza wouldnt have missed them. bench was little to no help. farmar looked somehow slower than fisher when guarding nelson. odom didnt really make his presence felt…and that missed dunk was ugly…and the and one 3-pointer he gave to lewis didnt help (even though he missed the free throw…huge momentum swing.

Watever…1st 3 game losing streak in 2 years and we still number 1 in the west. Calm down people. we’ll be aite. we will still be number one in the west. no need to throw in the towel guys. JUST CALM DOWN. Dont go into Panic mode please

As a magic fan Dallas is no joke

They look really good after getting Haywood and Butler. They beat us pretty easily when we didnt play all that terrible. The only weak link I see is Kidd on defense against quick PG’s. Fisher is definitely not in that category. I would think your in trouble matchup wise

Fisher < Kidd
Kobe> Butler
Artest = Marion
Pau < Dirk
Bynum = Haywood

Odom > Dallas bench PF’s
LA bench G’s < Terry

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

But everyone keeps say wait till the playoffs..This isnt last year…Last year the Lakers had the best road record in the league so i wasnt worried about HC at any point… This year we’re 4 games over 500 so we need it twice as bad..

by EmmCeee on Mar 7, 2010 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

im not saying wait till playoffs

but records are a bit misleading. teams in the east have a way easier schedule bc they have teams like the nets, knicks, wizards, etc. so they play way more easier teams. The fact of the matter is…ill take the lakers over any team in the west right now.

not too upset

obviously i hate to lose but you can just tell that the Lakers are better than this team, which is why I hope they beat orlando again. Bynum LOCKED UP D Ho for most of that game, which was amazing. Ron clearly cannot guard Carter but Im not too worried about him cuz hes pretty inconsistent. Kobe was confident in taking that last shot but he just missed it, which happens. We’ll be okay as long as Ron starts actually helping the offense and the bench can stop sucking eggs.

by desecrator09 on Mar 7, 2010 4:12 PM PST reply actions

So...

The Lakers beat the Magic by 6 in LA. The Magic beat the Lakers by 2 in , bOrlandout it should have been 6 had the refs not botched two calls in the second half (there might have been more but I noticed these two in particular). The first was the phantom foul on Dwight Howard when he and Gasol were tangled up down low. There was a lot going on htere, but 90% of it was Gasol. Howard didn’t really DO anything, yet he was called for a foul that resulted in Gasol hitting 2 free throws. I wouldn’t have necessarily called an offensive foul on Gasol, but the contact was clearly instigated by Gasol. The other was the alley-oop the refs called off that they shouldn’t have. So while they didn’t make a difference in the final result, Orlando should’ve won by 6. Meaning each game between these two teams would have been decided by 6 points. So yeah, I guess my point is that I fail to see how “you can just tell that the Lakers are better” than the Magic. Bynum might’ve played well (I only saw the second half and he didn’t seem to play much…), but it’s not like he shut Howard down, considering Dwight had 15 points and 16 rebounds….
