Lakers-Heat Open Thread

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat, Mar 4, 2010 5:00 PM PST

Word is, Carlos Arroyo will be Miami's starting point guard tonight instead of Rafer Alston. Which sucks for us, since Rafer's as good at playing basketball as I am at splitting the atom. I guess Derek Fisher will actually need to guard someone.

Gulp down a genuine South Beach mojito upon any mention of:

Will we see another

running, off-balance, buzzer-beating, banked 3-point game winner? Hell, I hope we don’t need one.

If there is one thing that I hate about watching the Lakers on TNT,

it’s Barkley blabbering on about how Kobe has shit ton of talent on his team and that he doesn’t have to play good all the time for the Lakers to win; while Lebron has to play otherworldly for his team to win.

The act is tired.

by E-ROC on Mar 4, 2010 5:05 PM PST reply actions

Unfortunately, the comment Kenny just made was erroneous.

He said the Lakers would never lose by 10 if Kobe scored 28 points or more. He forgot about Christmas Day. I wish I could.

Stu and Joel! eff yes. I prefer them over the TNT guys any day…even though Charles’s rants amuse me.

Lakers at Heat?

Yeah, no way I’m missing this. I was at a bar earlier in the year when the Heat were at LA. When Kobe hit that bank buzzer beater, the bar exploded. I was so pissed.

Awesome! KCAL9 news will be having a special on the 20th anniversary of the 1989-1990 LMU Men’s bball team and focusing on Hank Gathers.

by Cappie on Mar 4, 2010 5:15 PM PST reply actions

Yeah I know. ESPN will be replaying some of the games from those years and the LA Loyolan had a special issue remembering Hank.

Even LMU had the 1989-1990 team come by during one of the games and honor Hank’s memory. I was lucky enough to meet Bo Kimble.

right now i wish Pop was the Lakers coach right now

I kinda think that this group needs a coach like him more than Phil. They need a kick in the buttocks alot and Pop is that kind of Coach. Phil is an idiot sometimes. I just dont buy this let them figure it out BS. It almost never works for this Lakers team.

I’ll take Phil keeping out people too long and letting them work out their problems as versus Pop jerking people between different lineups any day.

When we played at Miami, we were down by 1, Heat ball. LeBron stole the ball from Wade, made a drive, got fouled hard, picked himself up, made the free throws, and that was enough to win.

Bad matchup in terms of speed

Artest’s physicality is counterproductive with a foul magnet like Wade who is so fast off the dribble. That said, he’s done a decent job. The rest of our perimeter defense has been putrid.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

The bigs had to deal with near-constant dribble penetration

Because our perimeter defense was awful. It’s hard to defend two people unless you’re Dwight Howard and you have ridiculous athleticism. They weren’t fantastic, but they had to deal with a lot of our perimeter defense’s failings.

You’re pretty poor at playing the blame game here.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Mar 4, 2010 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not the one playing poor...

Gasol has only 10 points. Bynum has 12. Lamar has 13.

I think you watch a totally different game, and that’s too bad.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:12 PM PST up reply actions

Wow, you're horrible even at reading the box score

Bynum was 5-9 from the field with 10 rebounds. He enjoyed a huge size advantage the whole night and our perimeter players obliged by never giving him the ball. Odom shot 6-8, had 11 rebounds, and was huge down the stretch with a ton of difficult shots and key drives. Gasol is really the only one you can complain about.

Try again please.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

Err, where did I say he was overly effective?

For not getting the ball all the time, he shot 5-9 from the field and got 10 rebounds and he only played 32 minutes. That’s a decent line and not something to overly criticize him for. Sure, you can blame Gasol for not showing up, but Bynum and Odom played fine.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Mar 4, 2010 8:31 PM PST up reply actions

They don't get him the ball because...

he isn’t smart or strong enough inside. They don’t trust him down the stretch because on defense, he is a foul machine, and on offense, he can’t catch a pass, or he camps out in the lane forever and gets called for it.

Really, for a starting center, he has bench production, and you know it.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:36 PM PST up reply actions

Our perimeter players spent most of the game hoisting up jumpers

And he’s more than capable on offense. He doesn’t shoot 57% from the field with a 60.7 TS% on accident. That’s not bench level production, that’s one of the league’s best centers. He has a variety of post moves, can finish well in the lane, and routinely overpowers opposing centers on his post-ups. His touches are limited because we have one of the best perimeter players in the game and a top five power forward in the frontcourt alongside him. Not sure where you’re coming from here.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Mar 4, 2010 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

Marc Gasol has better numbers..

Routinely overpowers centers? The guy can barely go 3 minutes without picking up 2 quick fouls. In DEN he had I think 4 3 second violations on both ends of the court. His touches aren’t limited because of perimeter play. Jackson want’s more dominant inside play, and he can’t get it with either Gasol or Bynum.

But of course, you think it’s all on Kobe. Just remember that come playoff time watching the Laker bigs get owned.

Well, we're waiting....

Lakers played bad D and Kobe didn't help, refs didn't help, this was just ugly all around

Lakers deserve the Loss, they gotta play better period as a whole unit, not that off and on shit…rant over, see ya’ll next thread, here’s me praying for a Laker win.

REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

by BrittneyM on Mar 4, 2010 8:08 PM PST reply actions

Say what's real..

Kobe was a turnstile on D and when he wasnt getting bet off the dribble he was letting his man shoot wide open 3’s

Kobe isnt good, he's just better than your favorite player

by shaqfor3 on Mar 4, 2010 8:20 PM PST reply actions

FYI

I blame Kobe for pretty much everything. It’s his team. It’s his responsibility to get everyone involved or take all the shots. W/e he choses, its really his choosing, so I blame no one else. He has the ball most of hte time and it’s really his choice not to have it when he doesn’t have it. This has slowly been ingrained into my brain for about 5 years now.

and start Vujacic from now on.

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

why?

why would they do that? I’m fairly certain i said nothing about not wanting Kobe. he expects perfection from himself, so do i.

by heinzketchup on Mar 4, 2010 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

LOL,....

You need to demand more perfection from yourself.

nope

the perks of being a lakers fan

by heinzketchup on Mar 4, 2010 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah,..

I guess lowered expectations from yourself should be different for a team you root for in order to balance that out.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Mar 4, 2010 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

oh i dont think you got it

first that’s pretty borderline of a personal attack, and i meant demanding more of myself as a Lakers fan not as a person.

by heinzketchup on Mar 4, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

It's not..

you say you demand more from Kobe. I’m saying that you as a fan does not factor in a win or a loss, yet if you demand perfection from someone you don’t know, than you should look at yourself first, if you are gonna place blame on one person for an entire team that also could have played better.

Basically, I’m saying you’re way off on this, and that maybe you should try harder.

Well, we're waiting....

i’m sorry if I’m the only person in the world who thinks Kobe shooting for 8 straight possessions from the 4th and OT is actually a bad thing for the team in the end. obviously he proved me wrong again today.

i blame

this one on kobe and pau, our so called all stars. Kobe’s defensive was horrible. i wonder why people think he is so good at defense. he let richardson go off from 3. And pau, WTF? has he gotten worse as time goes by. be a freaking 7 footer and stop playing so soft. im sick of this european finesse crap. there is a reason why usa beats your ass every time. artest did well against wade. missed free throws were painful. fisher did ok. bench did ok. bynum was kinda not really there.

He fouled Richardson on that last three, too.

Lucky the refs didn’t call that.

One benefit of this loss – I will remember to file this as evidence next time the conspiracy theorists come out of the bushes, or wherever they live: Charge call on Kobe at critical juncture in game.

The reason for a timeout is to address a point or strategy, and Phil obviously didn’t have anything new to say to the team. It’s all about essecution.

to tell you the truth, College ball is alot better than pros. The refs call alot less fouls, the postseason is perfect, and its just more exicting IMO. I just like the NBA cuz of the Lakers really.

Book it!

Lakers only lose when some scrub has a career night (Q 25 pts 7-11 from 3)

or when they shoot horrible FT %

Both happened tonight.
