Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What happened to Farmar playing time?

I've followed Jordan Farmar's career since his days at UCLA and for some reason become a champion, rooting for him to succeed.  How great or average or deserving he is is not what this post is about.  I am just confused as to what Phil Jackson's thinking is in suddenly dropping his playing time down to about three minutes when he was doing so well.   Did he mess up somehow when I wasn't watching?

Farmar has an injured pinkie on his non-shooting hand. Plus, the return of Vujacic to the lineup is huge.

The Lakers can afford to let Farmar get some rest or ride the pine. Vujacic’s return is important because of his ability to shoot the ball. I guess Phil wants to see if Vujacic can recapture that touch he had early last year or two years ago. Vujacic’s effectiveness >>>>>>> Farmar’s effectiveness.

If I were a gambling man I put my money on next year

as far as Sasha’s shot returning. I think it’s a contract year.. : )

He hasn't been playing well lately

And it seems to me that Phil is starting to shorten the leash a bit on the bench guys. Plain and simple, Brown has been doing better than Farmar, especially defensively, and they play the same position, so Brown gets the burn right now. Not to mention the fact that, as said before, Farmar is playing hurt.

Really? . . . Lets take a look.

Shannon and Jordan actually don’t play the same position, one is a shooting guard/forward and the other is a true point guard. As such, the qualities that make them valuable are quite different. A point guard runs the offense, controls the pace and is expected to get assists. I think Farmar is pretty good at this. As for his D, he was a defensive standout at UCLA where D is highly prized. However, he isn’t tall and strong, two attributes that Jackson likes in his point guards. Sasha’s point guard abilities are lacking – if anything he’s a shooter whose D is fairly effective but can only be used in short spurts to rattle his man because he gets so many fouls.

As for scoring Shannon and Jordan are basically equal for this season. In the 10 days before these last two 3 minute games Jordan had a 24 point game, a 12 point game and another double digit game.

I ask again, what changed? All I’ve heard is his pinkie (valid) and wanting to get Sasha back into rhythm for the playoffs – ok I guess, but what about Jordan’s rhythm?

actually, sasha handles the ball much better than brown

if only sasha actually got his shot back and stopped making bone-headed fouls (which seems to have toned down this season…but his minutes are down as well…)

soo true. . .

Brown dribbles way too much, he’s a high-fly act that can energize the game, but he plays too many minutes in my opinion.

Thanks Phil. LA Times comments answer the question

Phil says its all about getting Sasha ready for the playoffs – see today’s Times article.

I've liked what I've seen in Sasha recently

except his appearance was a little strange today.
As long he plays well…

Magic made me a Laker fan.

This is a great video of one of my favorite players, Chuck, King Charles, Turrible, however you know him, meet him again here. He loved the game, and was AWESOME!
