Lakers-Suns Open Thread

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns, Mar 12, 2010 6:00 PM PST

Shaq still plays for the Suns, right? It'll be important for Andrew Bynum to keep him out of the post tonight without getting into foul trouble. I'm also worried about Raja Bell's three-point shooting.

(Teeing these thread posts up two years in advance is a real time-saver.)

Reacquaint yourself with alcohol whenever someone mentions:

Come on in and have a seat.

Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal (pronounced /ʃəˈkiːl/; born March 6, 1972), nicknamed “Shaq” (/ʃæk/), is an American professional basketball player, rapper, actor, reserve police officer and a U.S. Deputy Marshal.1 He is widely perceived as one of the most dominant players in the history of the NBA.23 Standing at 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) and weighing 325 pounds (147 kg), he is one of the largest players ever to play in the NBA. Throughout his 17 year career, O’Neal has used his size and strength to overpower opponents for points and rebounds.[citation needed]

Following a standout career at Louisiana State University, O’Neal was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. He quickly became one of the top centers in the league, winning Rookie of the year in 1992-93 and later leading his team to the 1995 NBA Finals. After 4 years with the Magic, O’Neal signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won three consecutive championships, playing alongside Kobe Bryant, in 2000, 2001, and 2002. However O’Neal’s relationship with Bryant eventually declined into a feud, leading to his trade to the Miami Heat in 2004. He won his fourth NBA championship in 2006, but was traded midway through the season just a year later to the Phoenix Suns. After a season-and-a-half with the Suns, O’Neal was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he is playing alongside LeBron James in the 2009–10 season.4

Love Kobe, but when Pau is actually showing life on the defensive end you’ve got to feed him. Even if you have to work it around.

He’s been distributing well though.

by Madz on Mar 12, 2010 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

No excuses, the Suns had a lot of mistakes

Things would have been different, however, if not for that non-flagrant call on Gasol. I don’t think anyone can deny that.

by Azrael on Mar 12, 2010 8:35 PM PST reply actions

Flagrants are judgment calls

Looks like he played the ball, hit the dudes head.

by 99bc99 on Mar 12, 2010 8:36 PM PST up reply actions

There's subjectivity in almost everything. One can say that, and so are other flagrant calls called before today.

If you follow the trend of flagrant calls, the “jurisprudence” in the past years should have given Gasol flagrant.

by Azrael on Mar 12, 2010 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

Quite possibly, but that itself makes it unfair. An arbitrary decision to revese the trend.

I’m not making any excuses at all. Sure, there were a lot of mistakes and the Lakes would have probably won.

Of all non-calls given to this game, that was the most obvious and most blatant. I hope we can one day replace those refs with electronics ones—if that’s possible.

by Azrael on Mar 12, 2010 8:41 PM PST up reply actions

Well, charging foul on Lamar when the guy slipped under him while he was in the air?

Lame?

Calls go that way sometimes. Sucks, Pau went and helped the guy up. I’m not sure he wanted to hit his head.

by 99bc99 on Mar 12, 2010 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

Like i said, and i think you missed the point. The validity of the flagrant does not come with the intention

but the possible impact on the foul on the person—pushing the person in a dangerous area with a dangerous impact.

I don’t think the “i didn’t mean to” excuse cuts it here. Just because Gasol helped him out does not mean it makes it a non-call.

Check the trends of flagrants in the past years.

by Azrael on Mar 12, 2010 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

Okay I get it, but ...

It wasn’t a flagrant foul because the refs didn’t call it as one.

by 99bc99 on Mar 12, 2010 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

And for a definition

A flagrant foul-penalty (1) is unnecessary contact committed by a player against an opponent.

A flagrant foul-penalty (2) is unnecessary and excessive contact committed by a player against an opponent. It is an unsportsmanlike act and the offender is ejected immediately.

Was it unnecessary contact? Looked like Pau was playing the ball, not a flagrant 1 or 2, according to the rules.

by 99bc99 on Mar 12, 2010 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

i think your right

pau and i say this loosely “only got him in the face and the nose” and pau pulled him by his hair and said

it would have been a flag 1

LOL

that just made my day, even more than the lakers win

by akb24b on Mar 12, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

Which makes it wrong to begin with.

an arbitrary decision to suddenly reverse the trend in the past years—for what reason? They’re not the Gods of rules anyway—just because they did not does not mean that they’re right to begin with.

It wouldn’t have probably mean any difference at all. I admit, as a Suns fan. The point is that was the most obvious mistake in the game.

You cited the rules—vague and open to interpretation. Like I said, check the past flagrants of the past years.

The excuse that “I was going for the ball” is really not logical—how can you prove that? Would Pau even admit that he wasn’t? For the past years, referees have been siding with caution—then, they suddenly reversed that?

by Azrael on Mar 12, 2010 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with everything you said.

Therefore I demand they reverse the Lamar charging call as well, because the trend has been the player in the air is given the call.

On a serious note, I hear what you’re saying man. If it was my player I’d probably be up in arms too, but it wasn’t a very hard foul, they were playing tough, and they gave him the free-throws.

by 99bc99 on Mar 12, 2010 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

you can say that about tons of missed calls throughout the game.

The killer really was the Suns head coach going apeshit and promptly giving the Lakers 2 free points and getting himself ejected from the game, which neither the refs nor Lakers had any impact on.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Mar 12, 2010 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, had we made season % in FTs, different game

etc, etc, etc

If their coach hadn’t flipped out, lol, different game? Thanks technical free throws!

Lakers road games

for some reasons, Lakers play with no intensity, no urgency so road games are more fun to watch because they bring it

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

by BrittneyM on Mar 12, 2010 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

The Lakers also tend to make a scrub player look like a superstar

Personally, I enjoyed watching Amundson dunking over our team, again and again. Because he’s known for that, Amundson.
