Lakers-Blazers Open Thread
Los Angeles Lakers at Portland Trail Blazers, Feb 6, 2010 7:00 PM PST
I hope you're not tuning in tonight to see Kobe Bryant or Brandon Roy. Thanks to ankle and hamstring injuries, respectively, neither of them will play. Bummer! But it'll be fascinating to see how the Lakers adjust, no?
Get a little more beery upon any mention of:
- Roy sitting out,
- Kobe sitting out,
- How the Lakers are looking forward to the All-Star break,
- How the Trail Blazers are looking forward to the All-Star break, or
- Nine straight losses.
Troll alert, activate.

It will be interesting to see if the guards get the ball inside.. Who’s starting in place of Kobe? Farmar? Shannon? LO?
by intuitive on Feb 6, 2010 6:32 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
i think he’s bailing out on his team. sending a message to gasol and bynum. i don’t like this. he didn’t seem to have aggravated his injuries last night. he’s frustrated that the team is playing poorly. he needs to channel his frustration more effectively. he is poor at doing so. he is well aware of the losing streak at portland, why choose to sit this game out? why not yesterday’s as well?
by chaucer on Feb 6, 2010 6:39 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think Kobe’s missing a game just to miss a game. Kobe wouldn’t do something like that.
Kobe is in uniform right now but is barefoot and moving very slowly. Sitting in training room for ongoing treatment.
Kobe hasn’t missed a game due to injury since December 6, 2006. That just tells you how much pride he takes in playing 82 games, Fisher as well. Kobe wouldn’t sit out “just to send a message” No way, no how. He has to be really hurting in order to sit.

well i hop he sits a few games, if it is bothering him…grant hill’s career changed for the worse when he played on an injured ankle.

btw, i’ve been meaning to ask…why hasn’t kobe signed his extension?
by chaucer on Feb 6, 2010 6:40 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Partly small financial issues
Such as how his paychecks are divided over the year.
But there’s probably also that he wants to be able to have a major (even more so than normal) influence on the choice of Phil Jackson’s successor if Phil were to retire at the end of this season.
Plus, financially, he makes more money if he opts out this offseason and resigns with us on a new deal, instead of extending.

I can't remember exactly where I heard this, though it was probably Pincus
but one of the sticking points, I believe, is the no trade clause. Or at least it was at one point. Maybe that’s changed.
by Darkemans on Feb 6, 2010 6:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think it has more to do with the Lakers providing all the extra funds besides just the contract. When negotiating to extension or even for a new contract the team and the player also hash out extra funds such as if traffic is especially bad then the team will provide an airplane so that (in this case) Kobe can fly out on the airplane. Things like that would be negotiated during a contract extension. Along with what Saurav mentioned above (waiting to see whether Phil would stick around, the new contract agreements when the players association meet with Stern this offseason, etc).
by intuitive on Feb 6, 2010 6:56 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
players aren’t allowed to take their own flights? i heard bynum got fined for buying his ticket during the 8 game trip
by chaucer on Feb 6, 2010 6:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No, they are
Bynum got fined because he missed the team flight and was thus late.

by Saurav A. Das on Feb 6, 2010 6:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Nah. I’m talking about an airplane ride to Staples Center for a home game when Kobe’s at home, if there was extra bad traffic or something like that. Road trips are paid for by the team.
That would just be an example of the extra things the Lakers would pay for if they agreed to do such a thing, that would be agreed upon during a contract extension/a new contract.
by intuitive on Feb 6, 2010 6:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh yeah
That was one of the technical/financial sticking points mentioned. Others include whether or not he can receive the majority of his pay towards the beginning of the season, daily allowances on the road (players get a daily allowance for food on the road – generally $100 per player, but they can negotiate upwards).
"That's a giant sig " - Ben R.

allowances? damn. that’s greed. he’s already making millions of dollars.

Probably why Bynum went into the locker room:
Late in L.A.’s win over Charlotte on Wednesday, Andrew Bynum collided knees with the Bobcats’ Stephen Jackson, which he said affected his movement in that game and Friday night’s loss to Denver.
"It’s bothering me, but I’m going to play through it and get some rest over the All-Star break," said Bynum. "But it’s not anything too bad."

This is getting frustrating
Bryant gets much of the blame for Pau and Bynum’s lack of involvement (even here in SSR) when much of the reason is really the impatience and trigger-happiness of the triangle guards!!! (Triangle guards = Farmar, LO, Brown)

what the Lakers really need
besides a PG, is a tough high energy rebounding power forward like turiaf or Rambis. This team is a bunch of wimps

I saw an excellent graph once relating player usage rates to PER
And Pau’s PER far exceeds his usage rate, implying he should get more touches. However, there is also empirical evidence (though with a small sample size) showing that Pau’s PER steadily decreases the more shots he takes, while Kobe’s decreases with the less shots Kobe takes. The trick is to find the balance between the two.

http://lakernoise.com/2009/06/fisher-%E2%80%94-sidekick-to-the-greatest-grocery-guy-who-ever-lived/
Imagine telling them that you’re just 17 but you have plans on one day running not just the grocery store, but the entire chain of grocery stores.
Imagine telling them, "I just want to be the man."
And to make that happen, you’re going to stay extra hours after work each day, practicing so that you can get faster at bagging the groceries and running the cash register. You’re going to walk through the aisles after work memorizing the thousands of products and studying late at night for ways to make them sell faster.
You are going to work insane hours to be the world’s greatest grocery guy.
Not only that, but you’re going to invite your older co-workers to stay overtime with you, to work for free to get better and better at what they do.
