Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Poll: Which game do you MOST want to win?

The Lakers (especially Kobe) are a bit banged up.  They are still tired from the recent trip and not playing particularly well.  Thank goodness the all-star break is near.  It should do us a lot of good.

But I was perusing the Lakers' pre-all-star-break schedule and I noticed it is filled with particularly annoying teams.   (I'm old school so I consider the Celtics to be the Lakers' ultimate rivals.  But these teams can be major pains.)

Here's what awaits the Lakers before the break:

  • Fri Denver@LAL
They are 2nd in the West but Melo is questionable for the game.  They especially hate us for knocking them out of the playoffs last couple of years. We often play them like they bore us and we can’t be bothered to try too hard.
  • Sat LAL@Portland
The Blazers are way more than just banged up but they especially hate us too and treat the game like it is their Superbowl, World Series and Finals game 7 rolled into one.  And we haven't won up there this century or something.
  • Mon Spurs@LAL
Those annoying Spurs play the Clips on Saturday night and have a few days R & R in L. A. to rest their ancient bones before we face them.  I am hoping that a couple of their youngsters like Blair & Hill will get into trouble while partying in Hollywood.  But I figure it is just as likely to be Lamar and Artest who over-party. And oh yeah, guess what?  Like the others they would especially enjoy beating us.  Plus we've been playing sloppily lately and that is usually the worst way to play vs. the Spurs.
  • Wed LAL@Utah
Brrr!  Guess what, they especially hate us for knocking them out of the playoffs last couple of years. We often play them like they bore us and we can’t be bothered to try.

So with all that said, here's our question:

@Portland.. They talked so much trash after that Ariza “flagrant” foul on Fernandez. He (Fernandez) even made a comment about how he blamed him for his current back problems.

You made me laugh.

Which of these things is not like the others? 15 NBA Championships, most wins in NBA history, current NBA champions, lost by 20 to the F'ing Spurs.

Yes it's true and Portland even went a step further by replaying the foul

on the next game against the Lakers to insight the fans and pHil was pissed about it..

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Phil Jackson has taken exception to the Blazers showing the Ariza flagrant foul during the game in Portland.

I found the quote of Fernandez Agent blamed Ariza and if I find Fernandez quote I will post it.

Gerard Darnes, the Spanish agent for Fernandez, said the back problems stem from last season’s nasty fall against the Lakers, when Trevor Ariza fouled him from behind, leading to Fernandez leaving the court in a neck brace and on a stretcher.

I don’t think it was Rudy himself that said it, it was his agent.

No seriously

it was. dam it! I wish I had the article. Now my OCD is going to kick in and I have to look for it.. : )

I want McNuggets!

As much as I want the win over the Frailblazers. I want the Denver win more, due to the thumping we got from them. They seem to have a bit of a swagger right now and I want the Lake Show to kill that little bit of swagger they got.

by Ray DLC on Feb 4, 2010 6:32 PM PST reply actions

yep, nuggets it is

among the 4 teams, the one i can’t stand the most are the nuggets. but too bad melo is out. the win won’t be a good. but of course, losing would make it even worse (just like that cleveland game).

portland comes a close second (breaking the losing streak at the rose garden)

utah, we’ve beaten them before, so it’s not as importantly.

the spurs…if we lose, at least there won’t be trolls flooding the place.

Woohoo, I get to look forward to another 7-6 season ("at best") in 2010! There's nothing like going to Idaho for a bowl game.

all of them!!!!!

unfortunately thats not how it works in the real world…sigh
but if i had to choose id go with denver since they are the biggest threat to us in the west right now and we want to create more space between them….and id rather not hear alot of trash talk from them again.

were pretty much destined to lose in portland. sure last time we were pauerless but like olf said, the team and fans up in portland treat that game like its their friggin superbowl which is why we always suck ass up there, and since its on a second night of a back to back, its almost guaranteed we will lose…

im sure we will beat the spurs at home…

as for the game at Utah thats similar to a game at portland. they have loud and annoying fans and they take games like this seriously so i wouldnt be surprised if we lost there too…

it would be nice if the lakers can win at least 1 of the two games on the road and take care of business at home.

The only reason why I want Portland is because there is a good chance the Lakers face them in

the Playoffs and I don’t want them going into the playoffs with any confidence that they can beat the Lakers.

Sorry but you can only vote for one. I have trouble deciding too. I know I care least about the Utah game but can’t pick between the other 3.

If I had to choose I’d go Nuggets>Spurs>Utah>Portland. I see the Nuggets as the primary threat to the Lakers chances, and then the Spurs, and so forth.

by intuitive on Feb 5, 2010 4:55 PM PST up reply actions

That’s a pretty reasonable order. I know that Utah is playing well lately but I would prefer to beat the Blazers over the Jazz because of all the trouble we’ve had in their building. And while they are tough I think we match up well with the Jazz so I see them as less of a threat.

True. If the Lakers lose against the Blazers they lose the season series since they only play them 3 times this year. It’d be great if the Lakers won in the Rose Garden, but I don’t expect them to. Roy might return Sunday, and Kobe will still be playing on a sprained ankle. To top it all off the Lakers are playing them on the 2nd night of a back to back so they’ll be flying in and getting there late, and Kobe’s ankle will probably hurt even more because (most likely) he’ll exacerbate the problem by playing tonight. We shall see. I don’t see games as must wins until the playoffs, but I’d see the Nuggets game as a “statement win” if the Lakers did win. I just don’t see the Blazers playing against the Lakers during the playoffs (not saying the Blazers won’t make the playoffs though), which is why I placed them last, but then again you never know.

by intuitive on Feb 5, 2010 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

Well, there goes that.

by intuitive on Feb 5, 2010 11:05 PM PST up reply actions

at portland will be prob our hardest challenge since we play terrible in the rose garden.

but if Roy is out, i think denver is the most important one to win just cuz they are the best team we are playing in this stretch including Portland.

In Kobe we trust!

by robi s on Feb 4, 2010 11:48 PM PST reply actions

On TNT tonight Roy was saying he expects to be back in the lineup for the Lakers game. Port beat the Spurs tonight without him though.

I gave Portland the nod

Although it’s very close.

Basically the tipping point for me is a a tough road win in a hostile environment. Those are about the best things you can ask for at this point in the season. We need guys like Farmar / Artest / and Brown to be ready to play and win in these kind of situations come playoff time.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Good point about the guys needing to be ready for tough games on the road.

Denver, followed by Portland

Denver, I want to blow them out, just to shut them up. I want to do it so thoroughly even the most conceited Lakers Hater / Denver Fanboy can’t blame the refs.

I like the Portland team for some reason, this current team they’ve got, I like them. However, I would like to break that streak of losing at the Rose Garden.

We better take all of those games

Really, why not? We’re done with our nasty road trip.We need to show pride at home and go out with a fire to take our away games.

I still haven’t seen the Lakers playing at the high level we know they’re capable of, except against Dallas.

@PORTLAND

The Lakers have not won a game at the Rose Garden in 9 tries. I have the NBA league pass, and am tired of hearing how great the Blazers are by their local announcers. I have no choice in the matter, it seems that I will always get the Blazer feed on tv. I only get to hear myers and stu with the home game broadcasts. I rarely get them with the road games. I just want to see the Lakers beat the blazers badly so the portland media, courtside announcers, and their fans can be quiet for a while. Historically (since the 80’s), we have had a hard time winning in portland and its time to WIN! Go Lakers!!

by FLUTTERMAN on Feb 5, 2010 12:47 PM PST reply actions

There are 3 teams I NEVER want to lose to (or at least until one of them gets bad/good

Celtics
Cavs
Nets
but anyway Portland, we never win there and Denver doesn’t have Melo
