Lakers-Mavs Open Thread
Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks, Feb 24, 2010 6:00 PM PST
So here we are again in Dallas. It seems like just 11 days ago Shannon Brown electrified the city with his Dunk Contest magnificence. Can he do anything to top that moment?!
Drink some Lone Star beer out of a ten-gallon hat whenever:
- The Mavericks are described as the "New Look Mavericks,"
- It's mentioned that Caron Butler used to be a Laker,
- Someone observes that Shawn Marion has a wonky-looking jump shot,
- They show a clip of a Kobe Bryant game-winner, or
- Someone brings up Cowboy Stadium for some reason.
Yee haw.

Butler is out

Expect heavy doses of Terry, Barea, and perhaps a Roddy Bockets cameo.

already hurt...
Crazy. You know what surprises me is that there aren’t any, that I can remember, Dallas fans who come to SSR and talk trash…

Hahaha, that was unintentional

not really
Don’t forget, it was only a round robin game. If it were the medal round and they lost to the US, then we’d be disappointed. We’re not the hockey-crazed fanatical lunatics that the American media portrays us as.
Obviously some lose it, but most are level headed and the disappointment surrounding a loss subsides with time – like all sports.
In any event, I’m enjoying this! We should have beaten the US, but Miller was the difference.
yeah
probably it would be much worse of a reaction if it was the gold medal game or something but it wasnt….

Hell, even in the mob, you gotta kill someone before you can be a made man. But all LeBron has to do is call himself "The Chosen One."

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

Doesn’t sound like they’re gonna hold up anything so he should be back in the fold by the weekend. And a 3 game losing streak that still had you with the best record. Boo hoo. As for Paul Pierce, he’ll come out on crutches ‘cuz of his thumb, but you shouldn’t have a problem

First we lose to Boston, when our players were actually doing well.

Err, why the hell are we blaming Pau?
The horrific shooting (and defense) of our backcourt deserves far more attention.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Pau consistently has shown that when you give him the ball in a close game he hasn’t produced very well. This season at least, and these 2 games are indicative of that. When he gets the ball he either looks to defer to someone else, and take a bad pass that usually leads to a turnover or he takes a bad jumpshot that is pretty much off the mark and has no chance of going in.
Pau made no “statement” during the last few minutes of this game, and he didn’t make his presence felt. He’s the 2nd option on a team vying for a repeat he needs to do more than what he did… He didn’t take on any of the pressure, he didn’t box out properly, and he was looking to give the ball up to the first open player he laid eyes on. I expected more of him than what he showed tonight which is why, I’m not blaming him, but I’m disappointed with what he put on display tonight, last night, and the Celts game as well.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
I agree that he didn’t rebound tonight as well as he should have done, but the blame he gets on this board is way out of proportion to reality. On the list of Laker Problems, Pau is, like, number 27. Numbers 1 through 10 are Derek Fisher.

That's nonsense
He had a mediocre game by his standards, true, and is deferential, but why he suddenly is the focus of everyone’s frustration instead of say Fisher is entirely nonsensical. People are awful at playing the blame game here in proportion to who actually deserves it.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
well prolly because
he’s our 2nd best player and when Kobe is not having a good night, people expect him to step up.
by desecrator09 on Feb 24, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions
Not his role, which has been pretty clearly established by now
There’s a reason we beg for the ball to be given to him in the post, specifically because he is deferential and ensures the offense is run properly. Asking him to come up big in the clutch isn’t exactly what the team expects out of him or what I as a fan expects out of him.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Except in the clutch he was being too deferential, and that isn’t “running the offense” properly. I don’t expect him to make the game winning buzzer beater, but I do expect him to actually make the right decision. He admitted as much after the Celtics game that he hadn’t done so, and thats my biggest gripe. I’m not putting the blame on Pau for this loss. In the grand scheme of things this game doesn’t mean much besides another loss in the loss column, I’m looking at the season as a whole and what Pau has put forth during the duration of it. Thats more disconcerting than his actual production (or lack thereof) for this game.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
This is an attitude that falls prey to sample size more than anything else
Oh, look, he screwed up down the stretch in this game, so 1) he must be overly deferential 2) bad in the clutch. It’s an entirely bogus argument built on the fleeting emotions of the game that 1) ignores practically everything else that occurred in the game, namely more pressing problems 2) unnecessarily colors the perception of the rest of that player’s performance in such a fashion that everything else becomes either irrelevant or misconstrued. In my opinion, it’s one of the worst ways to approach evaluating a player, as it deviates entirely from a logical foundation.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

Nah, not enough money
And it would be so boring… :(
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
But I’m not talking about just this game.
The more pressing problem you’ve brought up is Fisher. I don’t really know how the Lakers will fix that problem besides playing him less. Phil has clearly shown he’s not willing to do so (so far in the season at least) so whats the point?
the perception of the rest of that player’s performance in such a fashion that everything else becomes either irrelevant or misconstrued.
Never did I say that Pau was the biggest problem during the game, nor did I base the final 3 minutes of the game with his overall performance. There’s a reason why I pointed out how he’s played “in the clutch” not how he’s played in the overall season as a contributing player on this team.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
Fisher has plenty to yell about
If he shot half as much and never attacked the basket, then a good chunk of my problems concerning him would be alleviated.
As for your issue with Pau’s “clutch issues,” you’re framing it in such a manner that it dictates his overall perception for the game, intentionally or not. It’s fine to harp on him about it, but again, it’s been widely overstated and personally, is hardly a long-term issue to dwell on.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Actually I complained about Fisher up there as well, but Fisher’s production now is basically what the Lakers will have for the rest of the season. Pau can play better, but at this point I’ve given up on Fisher. Whats the point in being annoyed with something thats not going to change? Pau can, Fisher can’t.
I’m not blaming him for this game. I’m simply answering why I was disappointed in Pau. I didn’t put the loss on him at all. Simply pointing out what he needs to do better. I do that because I know he’s capable of doing better. Fisher on the otherhand? No.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
You're stradling the line between plain criticism of Pau in this individual game and overstating long-term problems very closely
It’s one thing to pick and choose individual things that he did wrong and it’s something else entirely to come up with blanket statements about his season performance that we need to be overly worried about. The latter is what has been indulged in frequently here and I what I find entirely out of place and frankly ludicrous, aside from the sample size problem and sheer stupidity it engenders.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
The Lakers need to be worried about the production Pau has put forth during games against the upper-echelon teams. Small sample size? That’s how it works. You only get to play those types of teams every so often. I don’t know how you’d obtain a bigger sample size, and there’s no real definitive way to label someones performance as good or bad because everyone watches the same game and sees it in a different way. Pau has been too deferential during moments in the clutch, and if you don’t see that.. well then to each his/her own I guess.
The latter is what has been indulged in frequently here
Sorry for what you find here, but when I comment I don’t speak on behalf of every member that contributes to SS&R. If you have a gripe about that talk to Dex or someone else that actually runs the site.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
The sample size problem is completely legitimate
It highlights that 1) the games take place at vastly different times during the season, all with their respective chemistry, injury, or whatever concerns 2) it tells us essentially nothing about individual player performance in the future because it’s incredibly fluky. Simply because the sample size is small by default doesn’t suddenly invalidate the problem. I wouldn’t have expected Odom to repeat the performance he had at Cleveland during the regular season if we had them in the Finals.
I’m not saying Pau hasn’t been deferential — I’m simply noting that the notion that he’s now suddenly generally useless in the clutch and this is a serious problem to watch is highly overstated and for the most part bogus. It’s the equivalent of saying that I expect a Kobe game winner 60-70% of the time in those situations because of what I’ve viewed during the season.
And yes, I apologize if I’m singling you out on this issue, but the lengths to which people are taking this is utterly ridiculous and you’re partially taken up by it.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
But close moments within the last minutes of a game is always going to be about small sample size because not every single game, not even half of them, go down to the wire. I’m not saying that Pau in the clutch is the main problem or the Lakers need to deal with! I’m saying that its one of the problems and that Pau needs to stop being deferential in these types of situations because he’s the 2nd option on a team vying for a championship, so he needs to make his presence felt during close games which he hasn’t done in a slew of games this season. I never said that he was “essentially useless,” I simply said that that he wasn’t making the right decisions and didn’t properly box out during this game and previous games before when the game went down to the wire. The boxing out comes and goes, but he hasn’t made the right decisions that he is capable of making and that’s a problem. That doesn’t make him essentially useless and that doesn’t make him the main problem for the Lakers either. I never said either of those things in this comment or the comments made previous to this one. Obviously making shots “in the clutch” is fluky but that doesn’t mean that making the right/wrong decisions isn’t. Shots come and go, but the basketball IQ should (for the most part) be there.

Props to the Mavs for playing like they're kids got kidnapped by the Lakers
Lakers how bout a little effort now that we’re more than halfway through the season?
that's some bad officiating yikes...
no calls on our drives tons of ft’s for them…and when we actually WANT a foul called on us they won’t call one. clutch refs, clutch.
refs made 2 bad calls in the final 3 mins that sealed it.
looseball fall on fisher on haywood and no call on bynums post up
Lakers lost this game, the refs didn’t.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
this is normally true
there are times when the call disparages give one team a much better chance of getting a victory, do you deny this wasn’t one of those?
Definetly bad officiating
but were WAAAY better than them, they out-hearted us tonight. Just look at the discrepancy in rebounds
Damn the Nuggets are prolly licking their chops.

nugs are baddies
they are dumb if they actually WANT to play the lakers in the playoffs.
i wouldn't mind having jason terry come off the lakers' bench
super bench with him and odom…or just as a starter someone who can knock down shots unlike fisher
now lets go get destroyed by denver and hopefully
we’ll start playing good ball again
still won't play hard
They need to get destroyed by more than just the Nuggz to realize they need to bring the effort
i'm torn about who to root for sunday
as beneficial as it is for you guys to lose, I can’t root for the Nuggets. I just can’t. Maybe other Cavs fans can do it, but I cannot.
i'll make up my mind when the time comes
See you all next time. Thanks for a wildly entertaining game
arrogant?
How is declaring that “Kobe is a great player but doesn’t play well against him’” being arrogant?
no
thats not why i called him that
its because he taunts his opponents when he drains a couple of teams like a jackass, he speaks out against his coach, and causes issues in the locker room…thats why

Yeah no. Don’t even go there.

just did
point is, he’s an asshole and gives the league a bad rap.

Right because JR Smith is one of the supreme superstars, and the face of the NBA , so everyone looks at him, looks at his reputation and bases their thoughts on the league as a whole through his actions. Don’t kid yourself.

lol
alot of the media knew about the DUI incident and they all said that the league was full of these kinds of losers. Not sayin its just the NBA but its still not good for it especially after the malice at the palice

kobe is looking good
YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD YES!

maybe they'll go and lose in the playoffs
and then they’ll start to play with urgency

he's an embarrasment to wear that laker jersey
this season
by desecrator09 on Feb 24, 2010 8:52 PM PST up reply actions
he isnt an embarrassment
i respect what hes done for us over the years
but at this point in his career, it makes no sense to give him a starting position and allow the opposition to constantly exploit that matchup…
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
i meant he's an embarrassment this season
he’s hurting the team this year more than helping. Thats grounds for riding the pine if you ask me.

Lakers traded him for cash to the Memphis Grizzlies at the trade deadline last season.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
seeing as he was completely useless
i could see how people would be confused on whether or not he was on our team or not
"Attitude reflect leadership, captain" - Big Jules
Don’t know. I mean he didn’t hurt the team, and his contract was expiring after the season, the Lakers really didn’t need to trade him.
Mihm went through the “down years” as a Laker fan during the Kobe era, and to be quite honest I’d like to have seen him get a ring.
"There is no substitute for hustle and if you don't hustle there will be a substitute." -Tex Winter
Truf
but doesn’t mean he wasn’t worthless.
and I think we would have paid double for his contract cuz of the luxury tax hit
"Attitude reflect leadership, captain" - Big Jules
I just got home and heard the end on the radio...
all I heard was something to the effect that the lakers were down three he shoots a three Pau gets the rebound and losses it out of bounds…I just socked my dashboard..lol…

i wanted this win
but I guess that it does not really matter, the playoffs are worth 2000000 times more than reg season game
ship Fisher out please
so fucking awful its very hard to watch.
i agree, but the only reason that they want fish
is his veteran skills that appear at the playoff time
then have him ride the pine
and use those veteran skills from the bench (until the playoffs)

i feel Robbed
the officials were horrible…. but the lakers didnt play well either..
I'm not even sure we;ll see these guys in the playoffs
my guess is they’ll want to stay out of our bracket and they’ll end up gettin abused by the Nuggets, there’s a reason the Mav fans call them the Thuggets

there is no way we could have done it
cause no one wants sasha…
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
yeah
but to we had to get rid of sasha’s contract somehow in order to make space for hinrich. buss is already over the salary cap as it is.
since that didnt happen, Buss decided to leave the team alone.

rotfl…expect a lighter wallet tomorrow
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
i dont know
he said something like he was getting pushed around in the paint and not getting calls
something like that…its a cardinal sin to talk about them in such a clear cut way….
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
he was candid didn't give bullshit answers
said it felt like it was “8 on 5”
talked about the explanations the refs gave to him
“I asked ‘how you gonna call a travel’ and the ref who called it said ’ I didn’t see a travel”
Ireland – “said he didn’t see it but called it anyway?” Bynum -“yeah”
“I got a punch-in on Dirk and the Dude told me ‘I didn’t think it would mess your shot up’ "
"Attitude reflect leadership, captain" - Big Jules
lol i passed out during this game… i dont think i made it passed the 1st 5 mins….. i sense alot of anti – pau and d-fish sentiment….
was it one of those games lol
In Kobe we trust!
for Pau..one of those games for Fish one of those seasons

"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."

cal tech i heard doesnt recruit or anything. anyone lucky enough to get accepted there can join the team on a whim without any prior experience…they dont care much about sports of course

It's MIT for hardcore engineers and hard science people
I have friends who got into most Ivy League schools and got rejected at Cal Tech — it’s really, really selective.

cant wait for the Tourney
this is year is gonna be very interesting since IMO, theres no clear cut monster team like usual (cept Kansas is very close to being unbeatable)
No butler, no problem, Lakers are pathetic
what happened late, I missed the action but I know we lose

Hello, everyone!!
I’m new at this. Being a Lakers fan all my life & enjoying reading you guys everyday. Couldn’t help but to raise my frustration. Why does Bynum complain every time he misses the basket? The guy plays with no passion. I can’t take it anymoooore.
