Is Dallas the New Threat to The Lakers?
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=15296
The Wizards and Mavericks have announced that they've completed a trade sending Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas in exchange for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, James Singleton and Quinton Ross.
It doesn't really matter to me what any team in the West or East does. This new trade seems to be a huge push for Cuban to give new life to his team. Josh Howard was and still is a great player. But Caron Butler brings a new dynamic to this team. Not to add the fact the Brendan Haywood adds height. Maybe it's just me but it seems that many teams are copying the same template that the Lakers have by adding height to their team. It's not enough to have one dominant big man anymore. Just look at the Cavs and their refusal to trade Illgauskas. The only time they gave the line up of Shaq and Ilgauskas heavy minutes this year has been against the Lakers.
Usually trades of this magnitude seem to spark other trades. The Lakers are the only team in the league, in my opinion who don't have to do anything. The pressure is on everyone else. Even with Fisher being the weak spot on the Lakers, there is no other team in the league that can match up with the Lakers top 4 starters.. PERIOD!

The Lakers #1 threat are the Lakers themselves.Look at the way they have played the last few games without Kobe. That tells me that when they want to they can get it done.It kind of confuses me though those games against the Cavs this year they should have shown up to play instead they lost both of those games. Not that it matters though if I remember correctly the Magic beat them twice last year and we all know what happen to them in the Finals.Anyway I think when it gets down to crunch time all on board will strap on their chin strap and show up and everyone will see that there’s no stoping these guys when everybody plays the way their capable of playing. Not to mention Mitch might make a move or two himself but if the Lakers continue to play well and let Kobe heal look out.Another added bonus Artest is starting to look better with this team and if he can come on and do what’s expected of him, then any trade if any would only solidfy our hold on this league SORRY FOR ALL THE REST.

yup kwame and haywood together give duncan and robinson a run for their money as far as amazing twin towers go lol
In Kobe we trust!
you canot compare kwame to haywood...
hayywood is a natural center… a offensive rebounding machine and can shoot free throws…
lol i wasnt comparing kwame to haywood….. i was comparing them to the twin towers….kwame would be duncan, and haywood be robinson
: )
In Kobe we trust!
yeah i understand..
but haywood is in a whole nother class…. then kwame… robinson and duncan could be classified as being in the same class
I am so nervous about the Cavs
The team is giving serious thought to letting go of JJ Hickson and Ilguaskas. I don’t want Amare Stoudemire, we have enough forwards as it is. JJ Hickson is young and is developing into a great talent, and Amare is not getting better. Antwan Jamison would help out our somewhat thin lineup of guards, but Shaq needs a backup center really bad. And Varejao isn’t suited for it.
dam! you are thinking what I'm thinking..
Both you and I know or might agree that the Cavs, to win the title, should prepare to play the Lakers in the Finals. Of course considering everyone stays healthy that is the Finals matchup. Orlando not the Celtics will be the biggest threat. In my opinion, the Cavs were effective for two things, they matched up well in terms of height and no-one on the Lakers can stop Lebron one on one. I was hoping for the Cavs to get stoudemire because the Lakers would kill him. Honestly, If the Cavs could trade without giving up Ilgauskas I would be nervous. Amare, sucks balls. He is so overrated. He can score in bundles but a player like Gasol or Bynum just punish him….. by the way jj hickson would be best to keep over Amare.

If this trade does end up happening the Suns will buy out Ilgauskas and he comes back to us in 30 days. It’s basically a Amare for JJ trade.

wow
that is a win win situation for the Cavs. What is the benefit that the Suns get out of this?

They save millions by buying him out. And Kerr has been ordered to get under the luxury tax by their owner who apparently has some financial problems because of the recession.

I hate the Cavs..lol
j/k… This trade if made official will change everything for the East.

The funny thing is
the Lakers were criticized for getting away with GTP (Grand Theft Pau) on the Pau trade. What would we classify this trade as? Getting away with murder, homocide, suicide on the part of the Suns, who knows.
no one will make any mention
its only bad if the lakers do it.

Miami has said Beasley isn’t on the table, and even if he was they’d have to trade Jermaine O’Neal to make the salaries match. O’Neal is expiring like Z, but unlike Z there’s no way O’Neal agrees to a buyout, and if the Suns don’t buy him out they don’t get under the luxury tax.
by CavsLebronFan on Feb 14, 2010 4:43 PM PST up reply actions
Two different sources (HOOPSWORLD and ESPN) have said that Beasley was on the table, and
Kerr rejected that trade. The buyout means nothing considering that the team is playing a few less million but nearly 90% of the salary to play for another team. O’Neal would probably fit better in the Suns system than Big Z.
Devil's Advocate!!!!!! Lakers are still the team to beat
I’m new to the blog, I like what you said Purple and Gold for life, let me just play devil’s advocate for a second. In the playoffs the bench plays a lesser role than in the regular season and if the cavs have those three bigs, I see PJ playing chess with Mike Brown in terms of matchups, I think the Amare trade would be like a shield to block the Lakers from certain keys in the game. We all know PJ is too cool for school. Lakers are still on top until further notice. Peace!!!

The Dallas trade is at best, a marginal upgrade
Butler for Howard is a wash, besides the fact that Butler might be a better choice to defend at the two guard spot; otherwise, both have been having pretty dismal seasons by their standards. If Dallas was getting the Butler of two years ago, then I might start looking at it differently, but that part of the deal doesn’t worry me.
The big part of the trade was getting Haywood, who has legitimate center size and can defend against Bynum or Gasol, but even then, it’s not a game-changing piece. It’s essentially a band-aid for Dampier’s decreased production due to injury, and Bynum still has the size to overwhelm Haywood.
As far as the Stoudemire-to-Cleveland trade goes, it’s befuddling that Kerr would agree to do something like this when he has much better alternatives available to him. In Cleveland, Stoudemire would more or less be a glorified jump shooter most of the time due to the driving lanes being closed by Shaq’s and LeBron’s presence, although he is a very good jump shooter at that, so he’s an upgrade on Hickson as far as that’s concerned. On defense, a team like Orlando is just going to torture Cleveland even more on the pick-and-roll, as Stoudemire is completely inadequate as far as defense goes.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Butler's still pretty good.
When he wants to be. He’s pretty much put a wrap on this season with the Wizards. I’ve seen him play well and then just check out of games after a short stretch. I think actually playing with a better team and with Jason Kidd working the point will make him more effective than trying to do everything himself with Jamison in Washington.
A fair point
Although you’d wonder why he wasn’t as effective with all the offensive options around him (at least earlier in the year) and Saunders’ offense as a guide post. I agree he’ll probably better in Dalas, but I don’t think he’s going to revert to his ‘07-’08 numbers.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
He has played better since Gilbert Arenas was suspended. His best years came when Arenas was out with
injury. Butler is going to be good for the Mavs, I think. I see no reason why since he is good scorer and rebounder.
HELL NO
Nah but I understand the point you are making PAGFL, Denver is still the only team out West the Lakers should be very afraid of, other then that, Lakers should handle everyone else easily but again the Lakers Gasol, Bynum and LO have to be dominate, very dominate, none of these teams can handle the Lakers with those three playing at FULL potential.
There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.
no one is a threat the lakers
teams wish they where

Denver's Chip
LakersMania makes a good point in saying the Lakers are their own biggest threat, but in terms of another team Denver is it.
I see in Denver’s drive and chemistry some of what I saw in the Lakers last year: a giant chip on their shoulder. Denver is scrappy and will be out for blood in the playoffs. They have enough talent that if healthy will give any team fits.
If the Lakers have the same drive as last year then I’m confident they’ll prevail in a series, so long as they bring physicality and stick to fluid team play.
The question for still is: Is the quest to repeat enough of a motivator for the Lakers? I hope so.
Cleveland Armageddon
@Purple and Gold For Life: I hate to see the Cavs and Mailman, Jr brought into every blog post in existence, but if LeBron departs, northern Ohio will die on the vine. The Cavs become lottery fodder, the franchise loses half of its value and the heart and soul of Cleveland will be gone. Home grown talent like that rarely happens and if the Cleveland loses him it’ll be as dark as the day James Garfield was assassinated.
As for the Mailman, Jr, if he leaves and wins a title elsewhere he’ll fare just fine, but if he doesn’t his image, popularity and resume take a big hit.
defenitely agree
btw..who is Mailman Jr?

LeBron James = the Mailman, Jr
I don’t really like making comparisons, but LeBron reminds me most of Karl Malone. He is a physical, power player, who puts up big numbers, will win an MVP or two and if he stays where he is will have just as many championships to his credit.
Plus, Cavs fans and LeBron fans remind me so much of Utah Jazz fans of the late 90’s. They tend to be short sighted, have little or no perspective of their team/players in relation to the history of the NBA and give no due or respect to the accomplishments of their rivals.
oooooh
now that makes sense.

if that happened...
it would continue the theory that cleveland is a cursed sports town…however if the cavs land amare, this possibility of lebron going to NY becomes more unlikely…

Yes
It would pretty much right up there with impossible.

wow that would suck if the cavs got Amare…. they are already good right now, and getting amare for basically no one…. ouch
In Kobe we trust!
that is not that worries me because the Lakers would beat a team with Shaq, Amare and Side Show bob
it is the idea that even after getting Amare the Suns would still waive Illgauskas and then re-sign with the Cavs. Not to mention that the Cavs still have Leon Powe who can still recover well and we Laker fans are all fully aware of what Powe did to the Lakers while he was on the Celtics..
