Lakers-Jazz Open Thread

Wow. Kyle Korver sure looks excited. He should be, and you should be. Tonight in Teh SLC is a meeting of two of the NBA's five best teams, and after this it's All-Star exhibitionism for six whole days. Win or lose, let's enjoy the good stuff while it lasts.

Kobe Bryant, by the way, won't play in this one.

Lift up your glass and tip its contents down your gullet upon any mention of:

Get out of our way, Saturn!

Ronnie Price hates the Lakers

Who is Ronnie Price, you ask?

Well he’s a member of the Utah Jazz team that isn’t Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, Paul Milsap, Mehmet Okur, AK-47, Kyle Korver, or Ronnie Brewer (or Corey Brewer, whichever one plays for the Jazz) that apparently plays gaurd (or forward, i dunno) for them.

Here’s what he had to say about the Lakers

I hate the Lakers and I wanted to…it was more about that. It had nothing to do with trying to prove a point to Coach or anything like that. I just like getting my name called and like being on the court and having a chance to compete, especially against a team I can’t stand

Apparently he’s the one that got hot in the last couple of minutes in the 5th game of last years first round matchup with the Jazz.

I think I vaguely remember some scrub coming in off the bench and playing out of his mind, i guess this guy’s him.

He’ll probably go Ty Lawson on us and be the role player who has the career game against the Lakers

shouldnt have been a flagrant 2

pure overreaction from the fans and refs which is why he got tossed…similar to the Ariza/rudy Fernandez foul…imo the NBA doesnt call flagrant fouls properly…

Hey so

I’d like it if everyone who called Gasol soft, called for him to be traded, etc etc over the past few weeks could kindly take their feet out of their mouth and tell me what a dirty toenail tastes like.

Huge. Quickly.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

He's not soft

He’s not a big physical guy, but that doesn’t make him soft.

by 99bc99 on Feb 10, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

thats what i mean by soft

am i glad we have him? yes. but let’s be honest. for his size he’s not physical or tend not to be aggressive enough but his skills and IQ kinda makes up for it

by Madz on Feb 10, 2010 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

I hear what you're saying

I just disagree, I’ve seen him play hard, battle, scrap for loose balls, etc. I wish he’s be a bit more aggressive, but he aint soft. He lives in the post, and battles in the post.

Okur, he’s soft. Shooty from outside? Not Pau, he’s down in the trenches.

by 99bc99 on Feb 10, 2010 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

You're right

there are softer than Pau. But as a Laker fan im never satisfied. I know he can be aggressive, he just doesn’t do it often. besides i think shaq spoiled me

by Madz on Feb 10, 2010 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't wanna trade him

just want him to play stronger and not wilt, like he did tonight when he came back with a dunk on the next possession after getting blocked on a dunk attempt on the previous possession.

Magic made me a Laker fan.

by thestuff01 on Feb 10, 2010 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

He's no Kendrick Perkins

but what people don’t realize is that just because he’s not the toughest 7 footer in the NBA doesn’t mean he’s soft.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Feb 10, 2010 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

if you're a 7 footer two feet from the basket and won't try to dunk it

thats soft. If you can’t put a hard foul on someone to put some fear in them thats soft

by Madz on Feb 10, 2010 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

So you think he's afraid of these things?

Do you think he’s afraid of getting fouled and therefore he doesn’t take it to the rim hard? I guess if he is, that’s soft. On the other hand, what I believe, is that he is very capable of scoring without bringing the ball right up to the rim (unlike many 7 fters) so he relies on that part of his game more often. Call it sometimes bad decisions, like Kobe makes, but don’t call it soft.

Also, I’ll take a guy like Pau defending the rim any night of the week. Being “hard” enough to foul someone hard and instill fear in them can be reserved for showboaters like KG.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Feb 10, 2010 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

sure it is

but doing it through egregious fouls is for people that lack the ability to do it other ways (ie through their game). That’s been my opinion all throughout my life playing and watching different sports.

I don’t see anything to like about a player that makes that a focus of their game.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Feb 10, 2010 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

but no one wants Pau to make that the focus of his game

Its just that we would be even better if Pau could incorporate that into his game. The dude would be a beast.

by Madz on Feb 10, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

soft basically means...

…a player that shys away from contact or can’t handle a more physical game.

Pau can bang with the best of them and while if you’re physical with him you probably have the best possible chance of slowing him, it definitely doesn’t mean you’re going to beat him.

Mehmet Okur. That’s soft.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Feb 10, 2010 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

they both are soft to different degrees

Pau can be physical if needs be. but by nature he doesn’t go for physical contact. Is that wrong? No. but when they aren’t falling in or if he’s close go for the hard dunk. if some player is killing us inside go for the hard foul.

by Madz on Feb 10, 2010 8:41 PM PST up reply actions

Gasol "was" soft but mentally not physically.

Nobody ever says Bosh is soft and he ways less than Pau. It’s because Bosh’s mental aggressive approach is obvious. Remember Big Country I think he was from memphis, Olowakandi, I could go on about players with a physical presence but weak mentally because they approached the game with a weak mentality. Bosh lost the soft lable the moment LA fans and the media trashed him after the Celtics loss. Howard is tougher to guard than KG and Pau did an amazing job on him because Bynum was on the bench most of the time in foul trouble..

Don’t know what Shannon was doing, shooting and missing all over the place but this was a great win. Monster duo in Lamar and Pau. Sasha came through big today, except for the argument with Laker-hater Ronnie Price (maybe Sasha heard what he said). Three without Drew and Kobe and three wins. I’m proud of you, Lakers!

anybody else see this stretch as the lakers' turning point of the season?

similar to how they went 6-0 on their road trip last year, playing without their superstar in the black mamba and key player in bynum…lakers have turned it up on both ends. giving up 82 to the blazers, 89 to the spurs, and 81 tonight to the jazz.

gasol, odom, and farmar have stepped up big.

by eLrEiEc on Feb 10, 2010 9:02 PM PST reply actions

i certainly hope so, its a bit different because last year we were missing bynum and he never fully recovered to be a factor, this time around once Kobe gets back its really gonna shift peoples playing time and possibly their confidence. but to look on the bright side everybody on the team needed a confidence Boost so hopefully this really does it and kobe comes back without trying to dominate the ball so much

"i always tell the truth..even when i lie."

by j squared on Feb 10, 2010 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

kobe coming back will definitely affect the playing times of others

even sasha has looked decent as of late…the only one i’d say who’s questionable is shannon…i think he’s shooting too much/trying to do way too much…he took 15 shots today which is the same number as pau (who shot incredibly efficient and made 10), while shannon made just 5.
other than that, lakers look great with different guys stepping up when it matters most

by eLrEiEc on Feb 10, 2010 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

I hope teams look at these games at the end of the year

before they invite Shannon to come over and be their second or third offensive option (ala Ariza).

The Lakers haven't exactly had a decent rest

since that 8 game road trip.

Lakers 2009 Road to Redemption: TREVOR, DEREK, LAMAR, PAU & KOBE.
Play the game of which Lakers reminds you of: TA - TI, Shannon Brown - Chris Brown, Pau Gasol - Jesus, Machine - Luis Scola/Russell Brand, PJ with mustache and beard - Colonel Sanders.

Is it possible that Kobe's "I get fed first..." mentality has a negative effect on the team

and takes away from them playing the triangle more often. The team can’t win without Kobe but i’m wondering if these wins say more about Kobe and less about the role players’ playing this way..

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Feb 10, 2010 9:29 PM PST reply actions

I don't think that's his mentality at all.

not everytime anyway. Thing is, they defer to him almost 100% of the time when he’s in. remember when he said that it’s “about time they should be asking for the ball”? Well, they don’t when he’s in. That’s what kills our offense. they should not be afraid of asking for the ball, even from him, when they are in position.

defenitely

that is my biggest gripe with Gasol and his comments about not getting enough touches. Not sure if you remember during the Kobe Shaq years…Shaq used to make the basket and he would run down on defense yelling to the team to give him the “fucking” the ball in the post. I loved that about him..

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Feb 10, 2010 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

It's also possible that Kobe's injuries

were effecting negatively on his shooting. His shooting percentage in January was pretty awful. When Pau was injured, Kobe was living in the post and relatively making a lot of his shots in the paint effectively.

I think the only reason the team has been struggling when Kobe was playing this month was because of his injuries.

I completely forgot about that and how Kobe just took teams apart in the post

the only thing that bugged about that is that other players couldn’t hit the outside shot consistently…

Ebb and Flow

You Lakers fans who blow in the wind and flow with the tide need to wise up. Yes, I’m thrilled to see role players stepping up when Kobe’s out, but that’s what they do, Dr. Buss is paying them huge jack to do it!
To make any disparaging remark about Kobe or Bynum in their absence is just short sighted and unsophistcated. Three wins and you dummies are ready to ship Kobe out?!
Go root for the Cavs or the Jazz if you’re going to think like that, knuckleheads!

Sometimes I think Kobe has got to be the most unappreciated player ever!
