Rafaer Alston to Lakers?
It was reported to today by Yahoo! Sports that the 3-30 New Jersey Nets have reached a buyout agreement with G Rafer Alston. Rafer "Skip to my lou" Alston will be free to sign with any team he chooses after the waiver period. Although the Miami Heat are said to be very interested in signing Alston, I thought with Derek Fisher's career taking turn for the worst so far this year, Alston being available is very interesting. To say the least, it is a option the Lakers should look at.
I know our PG position is very crowded right now, but Alston was a very useful piece for the Orlando Magic last year, and he proved he can play a good role on contending teams. If the Lakers were to sign Alston, they could also use him at the 2 as an obvious upgrade over Shannon Brown or Sasha Vujacic.
Do you think the Lakers should make a move for Alston?

Nah. He's going to the HEAT. The HEAT traded Chris Quinn to the Nets to make room for Alston.
Shaun Livingston is available. I’d rather have him than Alston. Then again, I like Dontell Jefferson much more.
even if we could make the trade still
we already have shannon or farmar as possible replacements for fish
3 point guard type players would be too much
what we should really look for a is a backup SG who can shoot the ball…
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
Both Shannon and Farmar are back-ups
There is no way in the world that Farmar will be back next year. He wants to play, if not start, play major minutes. It’s not going to happen here unless, God forbid, D Fish gets hurt, or retires (either voluntarily or forced). The problem is when you watch the games, like tonight, you see that Shannon does not have the handles of a true point guard and Farmer has too many WTF moments. He was chucking against Dallas and damn near everything went in. After an airball three he had to be told by Shannon of all people to calm down and run the offense.
We need a starter for next year. Kirk Hinrich is perfect. Bye Farmar and Morrison and the $300k+ to make the contracts work.
Nope
not only are we stacked at the backcourt, it doesn’t solve our problems there. Rafer isn’t exactly known for his defense against opposing PGs. Besides, we’re deep into the luxury tax as it is.
Plus im not sure if he would be a good triangle PG

Heat are signing Alston
They traded Quinn over to New Jersey along with a pick and cash to create a roster spot for Alston.

At this point in terms of PG I will only get excited if the Lakers
can get someone who can shoot the three and who has a high basketball IQ (Like Fisher) because being able to pick up the triangle is huge. Having a quick PG would be nice but defense and shooting from the outside are more important. No matter what Fisher’s FG% is, teams will always fear his outside shooting and that spacing is what the triangle depends a lot on. Just think how easy it would be to double team off of a player like Rondo.

What about............
We need a starter for next year. Kirk Hinrich is perfect. Bye Farmar and Morrison (Sasha) and the $300k+ to make the contracts work. High basketball IQ, plays great defense, 38 percent from 3’s on his career (imagine how much better with the triangle and the open 3’s it presents). In addition, he’s still relatively young.
Why would Chicago do it? Save money (he’s still owed $28.5 million for 3 years), get further under the cap for DWade circus, he won’t play much if/when they get D Wade. Farmar can score, he won’t break the bank (our bank is already broken), he will get more playing time therefore he will be happier. Plus you can waive Morrison.
This has been talked about extensively here
Basically, the answer is yes for obvious reasons. The answer is also no because Buss has been money-conscious since Bynum’s extension and Hinrich is an expensive solution to the point guard problem. That said, Buss hasn’t shown an aversion to building a champion in the past, regardless of the cost, so it definitely could happen, although the reason not to do so is readily apparent as well.

I'm finding this out....
I was only posting on Yahoo Sports before. They would not really adding that much salary because aobut $8 million comes off the books immediately, he would need to add other players to fill the gaps. Jordan would want at least $4 million a year plus what are you going to sign Fisher to? He should get a farewell tour contract for $3 million.
PJ is trying to get Kobe more comfortable (trusting) the other players so he doesn’t just look for Fish when he breaks down a defense. Those who don’t see this really don’t follow basketball or the Lakers. As great as Kobe is, he is still a creature of habit. When they need a three Kobe, he is either going to take the shot or pass to Fish. Kobe is gaining trust in Ron Ron (big time) and Shannon (more and more). So the weaning process has begun.

The salary hit
Is in the long-term. Hinrich will cost roughly $9 million next year and $8.5 million the next, which is naturally multiplied by the luxury tax, and is rather expensive for a point guard that isn’t a borderline All-Star talent. In any case, $4 million is awfully high for Farmar, considering it’s far above his QO, which is probably his price floor. If the Lakers really want to keep Farmar, I find it doubtful a team would offer a contract large enough to discourage the Lakers from keeping him. As for Fisher, I can’t imagine him getting a salary that much higher than the minimum if the Lakers want to retain him. Locker room leadership only goes so far.
