Lakers to Face Ricky Rubio, Barcelona in Preseason
This should be fun. It appears that the Lakers will visit Spain this October to play an exhibition game against Regal FC Barcelona. That's Pau Gasol's former team and a preseason Laker opponent back in 2008. The Lakers won that game at Staples 108 to 104, overcoming 34 points from Juan Carlos Navarro and 15 from current Milwaukee Buck Ersan Ilyasova.
The most intriguing dimension to this story is that it's a chance for Laker fans to see Ricky Rubio up close. After four seasons with DKV Joventut, Rubio signed a six-year deal with Barca this past offseason. His contract gives him the option to jump to the NBA in 2011.
Barcelona is the defending Spanish League champion. In addition to Rubio, they've still got Navarro along with one-time Orlando Magic draftee Fran Vazquez, former Maryland Terp Terence Morris and former Cincinnati Bearcat Pete Mickael. They're 11-0 in Euroleague play so far this season.

The Painted Area has a nice look on Rubio’s current play:

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

Awesome
now we get to see non NBA points torch us for 20-10.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
I gotta think Kobe will be fired up to guard Rubio
Especially on a big European stage. He’ll let Pau do the scoring while making sure Ricky doesn’t blow up.

well it's a preseason game, I was mostly kidding
Wonder if D.Fish will be starting by then

I wouldn't characterize Rubio as a scorer
He has no jumpshot and can’t finish. If Kobe guards him, then he probably won’t score any points. He does make pretty outrageous Nash-esque passes though — look at the Painted Area link above.
All that said, Rubio is really two or three years removed from coming to the NBA. Until he develops methods of compensating for the vast difference in athleticism he’ll be seeing in the NBA, he’s going to be at a serious disadvantage.

From Rubio?
I’d wager something like 6/8 or at the most, 10/12. He’s an amazing passer, but really, really can’t score.

why was #5 considered a low draft pick for him then?
Really the dude is being heralded as the next Steve Nash (who mind you, shoots over 50% from the field)

Because he's an awesome passer
And he was viewed as more or less the best European prospect for the decade. “Prospect” is the key word here, as he has a good way to go before he can seriously compete in the NBA, but he has enormous upside. Seriously, click on The Painted Area link I posted above and look at some of the videos — he does a lot of Nash-esque passes, especially probing off the pick-and-roll.
The flip side is that he doesn’t have great athleticism and he can’t really score. Matt Moore had a pretty good article on Rubio’s limitations, with the biggest thing to take from being the fact he’s going to get steamrolled on the defensive end.

For the record, I was never very high on Rubio
but it sounds like to me like NBA scouts got this one way, way wrong.

*Shrug*
It’s hard to dismiss his Euroleague and Olympics performances, and guys with his level of court vision don’t come around very often. We honestly won’t know the real answer to this until he actually comes over to the NBA though (or we can watch him at the World Championships this summer).

Rubio's jump shot has really come along
Seen a couple games of his this year, he can definitely put it in.
Also, Kobe is a big FC Barcelona fan. Interesting side story. Kinda. I bet some of the soccer guys will be there, maybe he’ll get distracted.
You're right their soccer players such as...
Bojan krkic, Gerard Pique and recently Lionel Messi have been seen on the stands watching Regal Barcelona games
