Kobe Bryant Semi-blasphemy: Thoughts, Hopes, and Apprehensions

I read an article earlier concerning the subject of Pau Gasol being the real Lakers' MVP. Robi s refuted it so well, and here's another good point to consider: http://20secondtimeout.blogspot.com/ (first article)... There's no doubt that Gasol is a cerebral and skillful player. But I don't think it takes a genius to see certain problems with his mentality at certain points.

Star-divide

Anyway, I just felt like writing about Kobe Bryant because I just feel so bad about his situation. Postpone your judgments and hear me out.

After finally resting this summer, Kobe started this season establishing that he was still the best and the alpha-nba player. Practically nobody could stop him, nobody could neutralize him - he was basically blowing everyone away on both ends. It just seemed so easy for him, and it was amazing from my point-of-view as a Laker fan because in my eyes, he has just reached the pinnacle of his basketball career, and the pinnacle of what a basketball player could be. After winning the championship, and getting some rest, he had become "the big kid in the alley"(Mark Jackson). I know he'd been the "big kid in the alley" for the past 5 or so years, but never was it more glaring than at the start of this season. Everything was soooo easy, and in all honesty, he was head, shoulders, and waist above even Lebron James...

Then I don't know. God probably said that he was too IMBA and decided to flick a fragment of his bone into a place it shouldn't be to make life a little bit more interesting. First few games, it seemed Kobe was indeed able to adjust (as we expected) but recently, it seems that the finger is wearing down (and duh...) Unlike the pinkie avulsion fracture (which he is still nursing by the way), this is a more "relevant" finger so it does make sense that it affects him more. Even Bryant said it. "Right now, it's make or miss with this"

I am in no way proposing that he should get surgery - because there go the Lakers championship aspirations. I thought about whether he should sit out some games to rest, but now thinking about it, I don't think he should. Hear me out. The avulsion fracture is not going to heal on its own. Surgery is needed. If he rests, sure the finger will be rested, but inevitably it's gonna wear down again. So nothing will really change.

I am also not proposing that because of Kobe Bryant's inefficiencies as of late, the Lakers are better off without him. Consider this, the only thing that the finger has really done to Kobe in terms of his scoring is render him less effective going against multiple defenders. With the healthy finger, he is effective against, 1, 2, or 5 defenders. Commonality: one-on-one, he'd still own (probably with less dominance with the injuries but still). So take out Kobe, teams will double Gasol and Bynum, and aye... there's the rub. I'm sure you've all noticed this. Gasol and Bynum cannot handle double teams period. If they'd have to go against multiple defenders all the time as Kobe does, they'll be neutralized. Even with 8 fingers, Kobe is still facing multiple defenders, and that is an asset, because that gives breathing room for other players who are supposed to step up.

Bottomline. Even with eight fingers, Kobe Bryant is still the best player of the Lakers because it still takes a barrage of defenders from other teams to neutralized an eight-fingered basketball player.

But I just had to write about it because I'm frustrated, not at Kobe, not really at anyone, but at the turn of events. Kobe Bryant was easily on his way to his best season (and that says a lot because he's made a career out of spectacular seasons), then this had to happen and now he's being limited. And he's going to have to deal with this until June (hopefully). And there's really nothing that can be done. He's continued playing, if you think about it, is really the most reasonable decision he can come up with.

But I haven't "lost the faith" so to speak. I merely expressed how frustrated I was that things had to be this way. Nonetheless, I wouldn't put it past Kobe to suddenly get going somehow - he's a mythical creature after all. This team will probably step it up in the playoffs too, so a loss to the Cavs or even to Boston (if we do lose) should not cause panic.

And whatever happens this season, whether the Lakers win the Finals with Bryant as the Finals MVP, or God forbid not, I just can't wait for Kobe next season. If he does have his 2 broken fingers repaired, watch out everyone. You guys familiar with Strike Freedom of Gundam Seed, or of Gogeta from Dragon Ball Z? That's how it's gonna be.

It's a real pity

First off, an avulsion fracture can naturally heal, it doesn’t need surgery. The L.A. Times had an article about it right after Kobe injured that finger. Second, the finger being worn down is not the reason he’s shooting so poorly. He aggravated the injury in a game against Houston and it has been affecting him ever since. Third, since an can avulsion fracture heals itself, his pinkie might be healed by now. It’s his dislocated ring finger must be the other finger that’s bothering him.

It’s a real pity that this finger is preventing Kobe from being the player he is. When Doris Burke interviewed him after the game against the Knicks, she too expressed her pity by clearly saying that Kobe should make his finger better. I wholeheartedly agree with you; the first two months of this season has been a Kobe Bryant that we have never seen before. Even well know Lebron groupie Rick Kamla ran a rant arguing that he has never seen Kobe this good, Kenny Smith backed up that argument at yahoo.com as well. And yes! Kobe was definitely head and shoulders better than Lebron. It seemd like Kobe will be on his way to his second NBA MVP award. But the injury occured and suddenly were here at this point and everybody especially the haters forgot how magnificent Kobe was during the first two months of the season. It’s amazing how people have such a short-term memory.

But what should Kobe and the Lakers do about this now? Right now, the supporting cast must shoulder some of the burden now and Kobe on his part needs to rely on them more not the other way around. This will be better for the team and for Kobe as this is the best thing they could do right now and it will also could have tremendous benefits in the long-term. Kobe can still make a run for the MVP if the rest of his teammates and the whole team improve their play. If this happens and we end up with the best record in the NBA, it should reflect on Kobe and that’s a good case for his MVP credentials. Because the argument that Kobe has more talent around him than Lebron does have proven otherwise. The supporting cast Lebron is championship material so that shouldn’t penalize Kobe’s case. If other teams could help us out in handing some losses to Cavs then Kobe can still win the MVP but of course that won’t mean a thing unless we win the championship.

Thanks for the comment

By the way, if you could please send me a link of the article that says an avulsion fracture can heal on its own. Because by my knowledge, Kobe’s doctors have made it clear two years ago that his pinkie can only be surgically repaired. I actually saw an x-ray of an avulsion fracture, and it’s kinda ugly btw :)) so if you could send me a link. thanks

You know, Kobe was playing all right after he got used to the finger.

I think the problem is more involving his back. (Anyone know how long back spasms normally last btw?) I think Kobe’s afraid to go down low for one. When he was dominating at the beginning, he was in the post, not facing up or chucking up 3’s. He needs to rest at least 1 or 2 games.

Actually

Even before the back, he had a string of bad games. I think it had to do with him “experimenting” by taking out the splint so that the finger can have more flexibility. We all know how that experiment worked out, so he now has the splint on. Ya perhaps the back is not 100% but Phil Jackson mentioned that there is actually a lot of “extra-curricular activity going on in that finger” meaning, it did not all end up with the fracture. Example, at the start, Gary Vitti was able to limit the swelling down to the knuckle. But now, there is some swelling at the tip of the finger and at the middle. So, it does not all end with the fracture. The fracture is causing some extra stuff in that finger :)) damn x_x

it's pretty obvious he's not a hundred percent with that back. he needs rest.

kobe conundrum

KB should rest,we all know it.However,8 fingers, bad back and all he is drawing lots of attention from other teams’ defenses. He misses a lot of shots but this generally needs to Lamar Odom rebound explosions:) because he is still somehow able to shoot with great accuracy and misses don’t become very bad. Why?I guess he really is a mythical creature after all:)Take out Kobe and suddenly you will see that AB and Pau will not be that efficient at all.they still get lots of assists from him. So,while it really bothers and saddens me when KB shoots for 7/25 I do not know how to react.Until the 31st Dec he was beyond the mortal planes. Now he has lost an edge.I only hope God will change his mind after this point:)Great write-up btw.

If he is ANYTHING like the X20A Strike Freedom then I CANT WAIT for next season to arrive

That aside I have a personal preference for the X19A Infinite Justice.

Yeah blame it on having college friends and a roommate that WERE totally into the Gundam Anime Series.

overrated teammates

If there’s one thing Kobe’s injury is proving, it’s that AB, Lamar, Artest, and maybe even Gasol are overrated. Last year TNT was always talking about how, even without Kobe, this would be a playoff team, even up to the conference title. But I just don’t see it. Part of me feels like PJ should force Kobe to sit, and force the other players to step up or step down. At least they’ll gain some experience playing together without Kobe, and at worst they’ll lose a few games. As things stand, I don’t think the other players got the message that Kobe’s injured. It’s precisely in this situation, I think, in which it would have been better to keep Ariza than trade for Artest. Ariza was the only one besides Kobe who had the fearlessness to take it to the other teams.

I know it's a late response

but this argument can now be refuted by the last two games. I think TNT was correct by saying without Kobe, the Lakers are still a playoff team. Lamar and Pau have stepped up big in both games.

Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
