Poll: Greatest obstacle to Lakers repeating as champions?

OK, real simple question.  As the preseason starts, what is the greatest obsticale to Lakers repeating as champions in 2010?

Star-divide

Is it a challenger in the West?

Spurs: They've been making moves all off-season and now have 21 people listed on their roster.  Always annoying, seems like health concerns will remain a big factor in their success this season.

Blazers: I don't know what the right phrase is for fans who hold a parade before their first playoff game but I am pretty sure it starts with "premature".

Nuggets: Really?

Mavericks: Really, really??

Is it a challenger in the East?
(Obviously the Lakers would only face one of these teams and only in The Finals.)

Celtics: Celtics fans seem to think they deserved to win it all last year and that KG's knees are the biggest issue facing the entire NBA.  They also believe they don't get enough love from the national press for how awesome their team is (and is going to be.)  But whatever you do, don't call them arrogant.

Cavaliers: My biggest question is can Shaq stay out of the way?

Magic: Dwight is a big man but the Lakers did pretty well against him in June.

Or Is it something else?

Ed: Apologies to the first 3 voters.  They voted before I added the last poll option.

A mixture of All those Things?

I see Health as being the greatest obstacle for the Lakers.

Followed by adjusting Ron Artest into the team (thankfully there’s training camp for that)

Followed by either the Spurs or the Blazers in the Western Conference getting in their way

Followed by the Magic or the Celtics getting in their way

Honestly, besides the Spurs or the Blazers, no one can compete against us, but hopefully the Nuggets or the Spurs will knock the Blazers out for us before they play us :)

I want to say boredom or lack of focus will be the issue, but, really? Kobe doesn’t just want to stop at 4 rings. And Artest wants one badly. Pau, LO, still have a certain label on them and they’ll probably want to prove everyone wrong. The media won’t let them forget if those to the Bobcats. I mean, the players will hear those accusations of boredom or lack of focus, and I doubt they’ll let that be the problem.

They’ll probably have to need a different motivation than last year (which was purging the negative emotions they felt after losing in the Finals), but this year, it should still be the same feeling of having a target on their back and defending the title.

OK. Thanks for the comment. So you’re voting for “something else” – that being the health of the Lakers. Got it.

LOL yes, I'm voting for "something else"

but I really rather the Lakers not face any obstacles at all and just dominate blitz everyone in sight like they did in the 2001 playoffs :)

It's funny

Blazer fans don’t want someone else to knock out L.A. much more fun to do it ourselves

Certainly not from experience.

Actually I do

Yeah it was a long time ago. Lakers had the best record in the league that year, Blazers 4 games to 0 sweep. sweet! Yes I am that old.

something else

im not worried about them losing their focus, like peanutbutter said, they hav kobe who wants to be the best ever and artest who came over to win

i only worry about their health, besides that if they play focused i just cant see anyone really beating them in 7 games, we are young enough where we shouldnt get tired and verteran enough where we can keep our composure.

maybe the blazers will give us trouble but we will figure them out like we do all teams in th eplayoffs.

plus im hearing that kg’s knee was alot worse than what the celtics are admitting

by true_lakerfan on Sep 24, 2009 5:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

To me KG’s knee is wait-and-see. Plus he may start good but who knows what it is like by April or May. (The same goes for Duncan & Ginobili too.)

I would love to pound the Blazers this year like we did the Celts, Cavs, Rockets, etc. last year. And you always got to stay healthy of course.

But in my mind focus and intensity is key. The Lakers played their best ball on that grueling Feb. road-trip through NY, Toronto, Boston the next night, then to Cleveland. While they played well enough to win the rest of the way including the playoffs it was never as good as that.

I think they lost focus during the last part of the regular season when they went on a eastern-team road trip facing meaningless teams. They mostly played well enough to win but were sloppy and never got back to the intensity of that Celtics / Cavs trip. Unfortunately, they have a similar late but meaningless trip this year too. But all you can do is play what’s on the schedule.

About that Feb road trip

You’re right that the Lakers would normally rise to the occasion to defeat the opponents they were interested in defeating.

But I thought that Feb road trip was a 2-parter.

The first part, everything was smooth sailing until Andrew went down. I think the team truly went to shock and in was a huge punch to the gut. I think if Kobe hadn’t gone on that crazy shooting spree in New York, the team would have had a harder time on that road trip.

The 2nd part, after Andrew went down, the team was virtually the same team as last year. Hence, they had no excuse, but to prove to themselves that last year’s team was still a great team that could beat the top tier teams and not just the Western Conference.

They were able to prove to themselves what they could do, which is why I think toward the end of the regular season they did get sloppy, because they “knew” they could achieve that high level of playing even without Drew.

But, playing like that every night has its toll. You want to pace yourself, but it was a good thing the Lakers were finally able to jell during the Nuggets series.

I think that only the Lakers themselves will be their worst enemy, as was seen not only last year but in most of Phils reign that while he lets the guys work out the problems they are facing on court and all that, when they are struggling or are not up to their A game that night, he just lets them keep sinking and sinking until they get so far out of it that it’s almost impossible to come back in the 4th….thankfully doesn’t happen alot though, LAKERS IN 2010

Ha ha. Yeah I was trying to be more tactful when I used the phrase “lack of focus”.

PP is mouthing off again

once again, Pierce seems to think that a “healthy” Celtic team can take down anyone. And there is definitely truth in that.

But honestly, did you think you can sign KG, Ray Ray, and all those old guys for cheap with no downside? Of course there’s a downside- it’s called injuries. Older athletes get injured easier. That’s the law of nature, and no arrogant loudmouth is gonna change that.

So on paper, yes, Beantown is a threat. But in reality? I doubt they’ll survive the grueling 82 game season unscathed. And once again, they can hide behind the injury excuse as usual.

I hope they remain healthy.

I want no excuses when either they or Cleveland meet their doom in the Finals against us.

Injuries

and I’m not talking about Drew.
knocks on wood

Well I am going to give a long winded answer that hopefully has a cohesive point when I finish typing..........eventually.

First off, unlike Golf or horseracing, you only have to beat the teams you play, not every other team out there. Realistically we will only have 2 series against a top team from either league (Finals and WCF). I think we will play the Spurs in the WCF, (a great matchup for us) and the Celtics in the Finals (a so-so matchup for us). I don’t think the Spurs can beat us, we can only beat ourselves. The Celtics on the other hand might be able to beat us without us beating ourselves. Therefor I will say that as far as teams go, I think only the Celtics would be an obstacle.

I refuse to discuss uncontrollable variables regarding sports in general or our chances of winning. In other words you can’t control injuries, bad calls, etc. any more than you can control a gust of wind in golf so there is no point discussing it.

Given Artest’s desire to win a chip, his relationship with Kobe and Lamar, his probable desire to stay around Hollywood for a while, and the influence of Phil Jackson, I seriously doubt he will be a distraction/detriment to the team. I think on the court he gives us most of what Ariza did, plus more. Unless he simply can’t understand the system or gets injured (see paragraph above), I don’t see him being an obstacle in any way.

That leaves focus/effort which is almost always my biggest worry. Again I don’t see anyone on this team (especially Kobe) being satisfied with one ring. I don’t suspect Phil Jackson is hanging around to end his career as a loser. While I fully expect the usual amount of complacency in the regular season (see Bobcats, Charlotte), I suspect they will have no trouble with focus and effort when it counts, just like last season.

Conclusion…………..Celtics.

The Blazers never had a parade, it was a rally. The fans in this town are rabid & after missing the playoffs for several years in a row wanted to show their support to the team.

To me it has to be Something Else

because injuries can be the kill all to a season and I don’t fear not one team in the west against the Lakers in the playoffs then we only play one eastern power so I like the Lakers chances a lot. The only thing bad I can see holding them back is a injury or two.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

In light of the team's final trip up north for the season. I thought we go down memory lane to look back at a classic game against the Warriors in Oakland. The day was April 20, 1999, yes the day of Columbine Massacre. Also, has anyone noticed that we have had a lot of classic games against the Warriors even though we have always assembled better teams than they did.?

Heres a new mix I made.

Kobe hasnt always been known as a clutch player. In game 5 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Semifinals, he missed a shot to win the game in the 4th quarter and 2 three-pointers to tie the game in the last minute of overtime, all of the shots being airballs. With that the Utah Jazz ended the playoffs for the Lakers in the 2nd round. Shaquille O'Neal commented years later that "Kobe was the only guy who had the guts at the time to take shots like that."

Ever since that horrible experience in his rookie year, Kobe has worked harder and has learned how to make those shots with the game on the line. This vid features some lines from Carmelo Anthony's Become Legendary commercial as well as some of Kobe's recent gamewinners.
