Poll: Who's your favorite Laker?

Got a quick question for you while we're waiting for things to hopefully pick up around here as the season starts.  Which of the Lakers coming to camp this year is your favorite?  (List of players from the Lakers.com Roster)

Star-divide

You can define favorite however you like.  (And feel free to discuss that too obviously.)  Please note that I am not asking who is the most talented or skilled or even who means most to the team.  But for whatever reason you choose, who is your favorite Laker?

Oh, I forgot to add that I think last year my favorite Laker was Trevor Ariza. But since he got free-agented to Houston, I’ll have to pick another one.

I didn’t choose anyone.

No stand out individuals for me

For me it would have been Ariza, but as of right now I would have to pick Odom. (I voted for Kobe though). I like certain intangibles in my favorite players in any sport, and Odom seems to have that to me.

Wait what?

but as of right now I would have to pick Odom. (I voted for Kobe though)

Do you know how polls work? Saying Odom is your favorite and then saying you voted Kobe is beyond stupid. You’re basically saying, “This is how I feel, but I have to be a Laker tool and vote for Kobe.”

You’ve just made me hate whatever state you are from a little more.

is this based on

how they play or how they act? Kobe is my favorite PLAYER of all time. If it’s based on playing ability/style then Kobe but if based on off the court stuff then I’ll go with the Candyman

As far as I’m concerned you define “favorite” however you want. So you choose if “playing ability/style” is more important to you than “off the court stuff”.

Gasol is

And I voted for him too!!!

He’s quite possibly the most under appreciated player in the NBA because he is on the same team as one of the most over appreciated players in the NBA.

So you bash one person's comment for being stupid just to make one of your own?

If there’s any player who should be appreciated in the NBA, it’s Kobe. That’s not “homerism” either. It’s reality.

One problem

I’m right, you’re not!

It would be really funny to see Kobe miss the entire season and the Lakers get the 7 seed and go out in round 1. Kind of like they did before they got Gasol.

(Unless I end up betting the over for the Lakers, in which case that wouldn’t be funny at all.)

That would make sense if absolutely nothing about the team had changed since then......

other than getting Gasol. Like adding Fisher and Artest, Bynum greatly improving, not having Brown, Parker, Mihm, or Radmanovic, etc.

fixed it for you

“He’s quite possibly the most under appreciated player in the NBA because he is on the same team as one of the most over-polarizing players in the NBA.”

Honestly, I’ve never seen people’s critical thinking go out the window faster than when talking about Kobe Bryant—good or bad. It’s like they’ve eaten a pound of sugar and can’t wait to make a snap judgment.

This isn’t directed specifically at you, Zaig. But I’d say that skimming fan boards isn’t a very accurate way of fingering the general informed sentiment about Kobe. Probably true of many players, but particularly true of Kobe. Too much baggage, I suspect.

However, it’s quite possible that the Lakers would be even better if you traded Kobe and Wade straight up… although this can’t be proven!

And you know… you can let the people I am responding to defend themselves. You don’t have to be the “auto respond to 100% of Zaig’s posts” guy.

Shannon Brown

I love underdogs. Most of all in his exit interview he seemed extremely humble but also very hungry for an NBA job. He seems to be a better defensive player than Farmar but he is defenitely more athletic and faster. I really hope that he improves his shooting and if he does I expect the Lakers to trade Farmar by the next trading deadline. I mean, the Laker already offered him to the Rockets at the begining of this off-season. Farmar just got lucky that the Rockets turned down the Lakers offer.

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Sep 11, 2009 6:56 AM PDT reply actions

too little to go on for now...

ShanWOW/UPS/what-have-you is very athletic, true, but Farmar is hardly chopped liver in that regard. They’re both big leapers. Thus far, Farmar has shown greater ability in getting to the bucket off the dribble, but that might just be because Shannon hasn’t played very many minutes.

For the upcoming season, though, what I’m particularly curious about is their respective ability to bust the zone, which is a big bugaboo for the Lakers. This isn’t just about dribble penetration; there’s a lot of positioning and directing that the ballhandler has to perform in order to break down a zone.

by BrianTung on Sep 11, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

You hit the nail on the head

Maybe i’m wrong but the last PG that we have had that could do that is Van Exel. I’m referring to being able to break the zone and attack the paint.

Brown faster than Farmar?

I have to disagree with that.

Brown is a tremendous athlete, and as a total athletic package, he’s got more than Farmar.

But when Farmar was having success last year and early this year, it was because of his tremendous speed. When he’s 100%, he’s probably top 10 in the entire NBA for pure speed. I’d have no problem putting my money against yours if the Farmar and Brown had a straight foot race.

That is the amount of games he has averaged playing since coming into the league. Maybe that will remind him that he needs to work harder. Of course, his injuries have been a huge part of it.

“Too bad, because I have had a lot of fun going back and forth with him.”

“I only insult people who deserve it.”

Does that make it right? I know lots of people that deserve a beating from me and I could probably do it, but that doesn’t make it right. Why can’t you just disagree, or let it go instead of the constant (and increasingly childish) insults.

It’s not your opinion that’s unwanted, it’s your constant insults. Why can’t you seem to separate the two?

Wojnarowski is the hatingest of the haters

But man oh man does he nail MJ on this one.

I watched the speech last night, too, and marveled over how much this guy, the greatest of all time, worshipped by many – still needed to rub it in that he had beaten them all. The speech wasn’t as bad as the article made it out to be, though. There were some good moments. He said that he never won without Scottie. But Woj is right on how MJ is not a gracious winner. He kept thanking various people, basically, for messing with him, so he could rise to the challenge.

but the article still didn’t state what MJ said about Magic. Including Magic in that supposed “freeze out” is ludicrous and ridiculous, as Magic is in the West team, and couldn’t have control over what the east team does.

I've watched that clip a hundred times if I've watched it once

…and while he did push off (and it’s therefore a foul by the letter of the rules), I just can’t see how that’s ever going to be called, either at the end of the game or the middle of the game or whenever. Russell is already off balance; stop the video right after contact, and based only on what’s happened to that point, I just can’t see calling that. Hrbek’s yank in the 1991 (?) World Series was way more blatant and that wasn’t even called. I think the only reason why this non-call (on Jordan) gets so much attention—besides the circumstance, of course—is that Russell stumbled after contact.

And I am not a Jordan worshipper by any means. Jordan got his calls plenty of times, but this one—aside from circumstance—doesn’t even make my top 10.

Kobe

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

I was lucky to get it because it’s sold out now :(

Like many others, my favorite last year was Ariza, and I was really excited to have him back this season. Unfortunately, Ariza wanted too much, and it only made business and future championship sense to sign Artest over him.

I voted for Artest since he’ll be the replacement for Ariza. Plus, I love players who work their butts off on defense.

Ron artest

Although we pretend to hate Ron Artest, we actually love the guy because he is spontaneous, and plays extremely aggressive. Everyone loves the warrior mindset that he brings to the court every time he plays. Unlike other Lakers, Ron Artest is feared by many on and off the court and he will continue to intimidate all those that stand in his way. Even though he is not the best player, he is my favorite because I am tired of soft players that just play for the money and don’t have the heart to do what Ron has been doing.
